but we're going to see a warmer afternoon than we've had in about five days. 36 in livermore, 38 at concord and 44 degrees in san francisco to start. so it all works out like this. we'll see mild and sunny conditions later on this afternoon. showers, just a few for tomorrow morning. a nice sunny afternoon on tuesday and friday a cold blast. more rain on the way. we'll let you know who will receive the most and what that means for this year. 65 in livermore, 64 in fremont and 64 in san francisco, so coming up, we'll time out that next round of showers, help you make your plans for the workw k workweek. after all, a lot of people have the day off. back to you guys and the top stories of the day. it's 5:01. family and friends of a 19-year-old hayward man found dead say they want justice and answers from police. bob redell is live with more on an investigation family members say are not treating as a pry

tore tee. >> reporter: the family tells us they are frustrated with hayward police. they believe their son's murder is not being given the priority it deserves the no police response to that accusation. officers found the body of the 19-year-old last tuesday night inside this abandoned auto shop where you see people have left candles in honor of the young man and last night 150 people lit candles in honor of him. he was last seen october 21st at his home in hayward. his father reported him missing a couple of weeks later on november 1st. his family spent the next several days searching for him. >> we paused so many times over here and we didn't even think that he was over here and it was so hard for us. >> reporter: as i mentioned, police did eventually find his body here last tuesday night. police are treating this as a homicide. no arrests, no suspects

identified as of yet. the family tells us they can't imagine who would want to kill him. they say he was a very generous young man who dreamt of one day becoming a chef. reporting live here in hayward, bob redell, "today in the bay." new this morning, this was just a wild scene. a driver and passenger safe after a devastating crash sent their suv flying over a freeway overpass. the driver was heading south in pinole when he crashed right through a concrete guardrail and then fell 25 feet onto i-80 below. investigators say somehow incredibly the 20-year-old driver and his 21-year-old passenger, they suffered only minor injuries. now, the cause of this crash is still under investigation. fallout over the resignation of now former cia director general david petraeus continues this morning on capitol hill. petraeus was scheduled to testify before congress on the deadly attacks in libya, and now some lawmakers are questioning

the timing of his resignation. marla tellez is in the newsroom with what is next. >> reporter: good morning. general petraeus was expected to testify this thursday about the attack in benghazi that killed four americans. that might not happen now. he is -- top lawmakers say they want to hear directly from petraeus. petraeus, nbc news has learned, conducted his own investigation into that deadly september attack. senator dianne feinstein, who heads up the senate select committee on intelligence is among those saying the general could be called to testify at a later date since he may be the only one who has the answers to the countless questions that continue to swirl about benghazi. >> five attacks during the year. one prior attack on the consulate itself. the question i have is, you

know, why wasn't something done about it? >> reporter: if general petraeus is called to testify, he would do so as a civilian. his affair with biographer paula broadwell was discovered only after an fbi investigation into e-mails broadwell was sending to a personal friend of petraeus. new this morning, that woman has been identified as jill kelly of tampa, florida. she had complained to officials she was receiving harassing e-mails from broadwell. the nature of those e-mails has not been disclosed. now, to be clear, petraeus was never under investigation and so far there's no evidence national security was ever at risk. jon, laura. >> thank you very much, marla. it's 5:05. switching gears, thousands lined the streets of san jose for the 94th annual veterans day parade. ♪ boots on the ground at cesar chavez plaza. many have served in iraq,

afghanistan, vietnam, korea and even in world war ii. some say they were there to show their support. >> we do it to honor the vets that have gone before us and the vets that are serving now. we've got to make sure that they're remembered. >> never forget. many in the crowd say they even -- there is strong support for troops but there's still much more to be done to help veterans and their families. today officially marks the end of the fire season in santa clara, alameda and contra costa counties. it was a relatively mild fire season around the bay area but a major fire did break out north of us. this is video from september's wildfire in lake county near ukiah. that fire burned more than seven square miles. meteorologist christina loren joins is right now from the nbc bay area weather center. another cold start to the morning. >> yeah, it is cold. that's really great news about fire season being called. always a good idea to be on the

best of fire safety, as we do have quite a bit of trees around here and it can get dangerous, even this time of year. you probably noticed that, probably had to apply the chapstick over the weekend. 42 degrees in sonoma, 36 in livermore and 42 in san jose. so the difference between yesterday morning and this morning is our relative humidities have crept up just enough for us to warm up a few degrees. it's not as frigid as the past couple of days but still cold enough for a heavy winter coat. one of the things that lead to frost, clear skies and calm winds. so you might find some frost on your windshield. wind out of the east at 3 miles per hour in livermore. later on today you'll be at about 65 there, 64 in fairfield, 63 in san jose. you can peel off that jacket by about 1:00 p.m. the 70s just around the corner. we'll show you when in our next report. first we want to check with mike on your drive. >> good morning. we probably have some 70s out there because traffic is so light as well. 65 is the limit for most spots.

in fremont the map shows you light traffic for 880 as well as 680. it does look like folks are around 60 coming around the bend at fremont. south 680, reports of a box truck blocking the slowing of the on-ramp. the freeway is open and box truck should be cleared in just a few minutes. the rest of the south bay moves very smoothly right now. a quick live look at the bay bridge toll plaza shows you no problems at the plaza itself. i'll give you a look at the east shore freeway coming up. back to you. as americans commemorate veteran days coast to coast some bay area veterans getting a fresh start today in san francisco. a brand new housing complex for homeless veterans is opening its doors this morning. that is where christie smith is live in san francisco. we're hearing this new facility is doing more for veterans than just putting a roof over their

head? >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you. this is a long time coming. actually they started this whole project in 2008 but it's finally coming together, giving chronicling homeless veterans a place to stay. this is called veterans commons, a project between swords to plow shares and the chinatown community development center. there's studio apartments with a kitchen and bath and on-site staffing with services like yoga and cooking classes. this comes at a time when people really need it the most. it's cold outside and many winter shelters don't open up until december. projects like this can go a long way. >> realize that they're human beings like we are, that we have a responsibility to them. they gave their lives or part of their life, you know, a year or two or three or four, maybe a limb or their sight. what can we give back to them? give them their dignity, talk to them. take a moment.

outside, palace of fine arts. it's a cold start to the morning. you'll feel that crispness in the air. grab a coat. the forecast is changing. we'll check in with christina coming up in just a bit. it's 5:13. steve jobs once declared thermo nuclear war on any phone running google software but now a cease-fire. >> apple moving away in that jobs era in a lot of ways, perhaps not as visibly as its new agreement with the iphone -- or with the phone maker htc. over the weekend apple came to a settlement with the taiwanese maker of android phones. apple had accused htc of copying the iphone. htc will pay apple for ten years to license certain ideas. apple has its own problems meanwhile at home. its stock price a brief blip to the positive on friday but apple stock has really been on a steady decline, down more than 20% off its all-time highs.

the stock exchanges don't close for veterans today. seema mody takes a look ahead to the trading day. good morning, seema. >> reporter: good morning to you. futures right now are higher as the markets come off another down week. the dow, nasdaq and s&p 500 all falling more than 2% last week in the wake of the presidential election and rising concerns about whether congress can reach a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff in january. now, that's when a slew of tax hikes and federal spending cuts are set to take effect. there's no economic data out today and the bond market is closed for veterans day, but we do get reports on data this week on retail sales and inflation and several stores report earnings. last week the dow closed up 4 on friday to close at 12,815. the nasdaq rose 9 to close at

2904. back to you. it is indeed a quiet day but we'll continue to watch to see if anything happens. >> it is indeed. thank you. it is 5:15 right now. meteorologist christina loren back here to talk about it. last monday we were talking about record high temperatures. a little different this week. >> just absurd how cold it was. this morning you might find some frost on your windshield yet again the past couple days. hopefully you weren't up at 6:30 in the morning over the past couple days, but if you were, it was cold enough for frost in every single interior valley of the bay area. this morning we're running about 3 to 5 degrees warmer in most cities than we were just 24 hours ago and that's good news. relative humidity is increasing. 44 degrees in san francisco, 38 to start in napa. 36 in livermore. it is cold out there. 41 in oakland, which is actually very, very cold right by the water, so keep that in mind. we want to talk about showers on the way. what's happening is we've got this area of low pressure just lingering to our north. the tail end will sweep through

the bay area but not until we hit tonight. if we do see any showers, the most likely location will be up in the north bay. you can see the showers starting to approach the coast. stop that clock again. between 4:00 and 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning we'll get some showers in marin and sonoma counties, so keep that in mind. but look at your highs today. add about 5 to 8 degrees and that's where we're expecting your tuesday numbers to end up in the 70s. 65 in livermore. the next seven days we do have some changes on the way. we'll warm you up and bring the rain back in friday into saturday. temperatures will drop off but not as much as they did with the last system. there's another system of low pressure on the way but it's coming from the south so that will make for a little bit warmer weather. still, though, rain on the way into the weekend. let's check on your drive with mike. it is colder out there. i might help christina out but i'm not a meteorologist. we're looking to the south bay where traffic flows relatively smoothly and i do have an update for berryessa road.

the box truck has been cleared from the on-ramp but i did hear north 680 there's something flantz like a refrigerator. we'll check on that. for the meantime stay over to your right lanes passing north. meanwhile we'll look outside and see how the san mateo bridge looks. an easy drive on the flat section. light volume. coming down the east shore freeway we also have the traffic starting to build down through emeryville. we'll see that the headlights past university avenue, an easy drive. you're at the limit through carquinez. the peninsula also looking really nice through palo alto. north past willow and all the way into the city and down here into the south bay, 101 and 280 both at the limit. it is 5:18. investigators this morning still trying to figure out exactly

what caused a blast ultimately killing two people and leaving entire blocks wrecked and unin habitable in indianapolis. that explosion happening late saturday night. it was felt as far as three miles away. at least seven people were hurt. two homes were leveled. as many as 80 homes were affected with 30 of them having major damage. so far investigators still haven't ruled out any and all possible reasons this explosion happened. it is 5:18. an election today will determine if the u.s. has secured a spot on the united nations human rights council. the u.s. is competing with germany, greece, ireland and sweden for three seats among 18 on the u.n.'s top human rights panel. the 47-member panel has taken on a steadily higher profile since it was created six years ago, but the western nations group is the only one that will hold a competitive poll for seats. winners will be picked by the united nations general assembly. and the presidential election which turned into a

welcome back, everyone. a live look outside from i believe the south bay this morning. a cool start to our morning. you know a bleak picture as well for hockey fans. while both sides are talking, a deal is still a long way off. a live look at a shark tank where games are cancelled through the end of the month. the nhl and players association met yesterday but cut things off about 90 minutes in. as of now, no set time for talks to resume. today is day 58 of the nhl lockout. >> the niners anxiously awaiting

word on the status of their number one quarterback. that of course is alex smith. he was knocked out of yesterday's game against the rams, suffered a concussion on this helmet-to-helmet hit here. after this, ouch, he had blurred vision according to coach jim harbaugh. smith must now get better before he can actually go through the league mandated concussion testing. that includes neurological evaluation, noncontact practice and contact practice, so they have to get him warmed up before he can get back in. if he shows any signs of head trauma, he will not be allowed to play next monday night. in his absence, backup quarterback colin kaepernick doing a pretty good job out there, flashing some signs of brilliance. he pushed this game to overtime. unfortunately, neither team could score, both missing field goals. the game ended up 24-24. it was a draw. the first tie in the nfl since way back in 2008. now things even worse for the raiders. they were routed by baltimore

55-20. this one just painful. this is the second game in a row the black and silver -- the silver and black, say it any way you want, they gave up more than 40 points two straight weeks. 55 points ties an oakland record for points allowed in a single game. it wasn't good. >> i'm surprised christina loren is smiling this morning. >> she's weathering the storm. >> hey, i'm a die hard raiders fan so i'm used to it. good morning to you. i don't even want to watch anymore but i'm forecasting a raiders game is getting easier and easier. 65 degrees in redwood city. for our boys out in oakland, we have not given up on you. we know you can turn this season around, it's been done before. 64 degrees out there today. hey, mike inouye, he is a 49ers fan. how did you like that game yesterday? >> good stuff. unfortunately the cold that's leaving me has gone into my wife so not good at home. hopefully everybody at home is

it is 5:29, everybody. thank you very much for joining us. i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. baby, it is cold outside. we want to check in with christina with a look at the forecast and a potential warmup. >> we've got a good-looking warmup. jon kelley, we know you like the sunny, warm weather and you will get your sunshine today. 37 degrees, cold enough for frost in novato, petaluma, same for napa. we're not yet at the coldest point of the day. that is just right around sunrise, typically right after sunrise. so we have about another hour of cooling before we hit our lows this morning. expecting a little bit of frost in gilroy, 33 degrees there. 42 in san jose to start. you're at 40 degrees in sunnyvale so your weather headlines tell the story. we'll get a few showers in parts of the bay area tomorrow, but then we hit the 70s. i'll detail that in my next

forecast. and then the cold blast. this is your hint. the main rain event arrives lat friday into saturday, so you want to go ahead and keep that in mind for now. it's going to be a rainy start to the weekend. your full forecast in just a few moments. right now i'll sending it back to you and the top stories of the day. we are learning more about the fbi investigation into ultimately led general david petraeus to resign his post as director of the cia. marla tellez is live in the newsroom right now with the person who inspired this investigation or the group that did to begin with. good morning. >> reporter: jon, good morning. to be clear action never was general david petraeus under investigation, rather a close friend of his, a woman who has been identified overnight as jill kelly sparked the fbi investigation. officials say kelly complained she was receiving harassing e-mails from biographer paula wra broadwell. the nature of those e-mails has not been disclosed. it was during this investigation that fbi agents discovered e-mails between broadwell and petraeus they say were

indicative of an extramarital affair, which led to general petraeus' resignation on friday. petraeus has not commented on this affair to the media, but over the weekend he spoke to his former spokesperson. >> he said he had an excellent job, an exceptional family. he had had a great relationship he thought with the white house. and in his words, he screwed up. he knows it. >> reporter: now his resignation comes the week before he was scheduled to testify before congress about what led to the attack at the u.s. consulate in benghazi that killed four americans. he was scheduled to testify this coming thursday, but he will be replaced by the deputy director of the cia. senator dianne feinstein, who heads up the senate select committee on intelligence says petraeus' resignation hit her like a lightning bolt. she says petraeus could still be called to testify, but if he does, he will do so as a civilian. laura. >> very interesting. thank you, marla.

it's 5:32. union reps for striking grocery workers back at the bargaining table this morning negotiating with leaders of raly's and nob hill foods. talks resumed after a week of strikes. both sides still at odds over wages and benefits. the supermarket chain says it needs to eliminate benefits to compete. workers say they can't afford to go without health care benefits. there's about 40 stores affected by the strike. the union says picket lines will continue until a deal is made. family and friends of a 19-year-old found dead say they want justice and answers from police. bob redell is live with more on an investigation family members say police are not treating as a priority. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. several days after finding the body of the 19-year-old inside this abandoned auto shop here, police are treating this as a

homicide. so far no arrests nor have they identified any persons of interest. >> it's just like a question, you cannot find an answer, especially when you ask the legal system for help and they shrug you off, it's very devastating. >> reporter: that is his father expressing frustration with hayward police who he believes is not giving his son's murder enough attention. we have asked the police for a response but they have not responded yet to that accusation. last night about 150 people lit candles here in honor of the 19-year-old man last seen at his home on october 1st, reported missing by his father to police november 1st. his decomposing body found here last tuesday night. his family is devastated. they don't know why anyone would want to kill their son. >> all these people here make me want to burst out crying, but i've got to be strong for my

son, you know. he can't see me suffer here for him. >> reporter: his mom, father and grandfather tells us that their son, their grandson, was very generous, had dreams of some day becoming a chef. reporting live here in hayward, bob redell, "today in the bay." it is 5:34 right now. two people are dead, four others hospitalized in sacramento or near sacramento after eating wild, poisonous mushrooms. the mushrooms were in a soup served at the gold age villa assisted living facility. the woman who made that soup is a caregiver there and she's also one of the four people sick right now in the hospital. investigators say she didn't know the wild mushrooms which grow on that property were actually poisonous. some neighbors cut those mushrooms down as a precaution. >> these button mushrooms, these little round mushrooms or even the great bigged to stools that are real big. you can't eat those. those are poisonous. we cut them down here at our

place because the dogs get them and they can get sick. >> the california department of public health has warned against eating wild mushrooms for years. unfortunately each and every year hundreds of people get sick or die after eating mushrooms they picked themselves. this morning the faa is trying to figure out why a southwest plane from oakland slid off the runway in denver. take a look at these pictures that a passenger posted to twitter. the plane slid off a taxiway as it was headed to the gate saturday night. this morning investigators say the pavement was wet, but not icy and that snow wasn't sticking to the ground when the plane arrived. remarkably no one was injured. well, the recent cold weather and all the wetness out there is actually good news for skiers around helping kick off an early ski season all across southern california. skiers and snowboarders enjoying the opening day this weekend. the earliest opening for a season in a very long time. mountain high, the san

bernardino mountains opening with about a foot and a half of natural and man made snow. up near lake tahoe, boreal already open. north star, sugar bowl and heavenly plan opened this weekend and squaw valley will open the day before thanksgiving. the sierra receiving about 28 inches in just the pacht fst fes alone. >> it's pretty exciting for people. it's nice. we got that blast this weekend, didn't we, christina? >> we certainly did. i do believe some of that snow will melt as we are slated to hit the 70s here in the bay area and 50s and 60s in the sierra throughout the week. but hey hey, snowboarders and skiers, more on the way as we head through not only tomorrow night, also another round friday into saturday. so that bodes well for you hitting the slopes very soon. 36 in livermore, 40 in oakland, 40 in sunnyvale, 42 in san jose. so what you need to keep in mind when it comes to the winter chill, protect your plants and your pets.

if you have sensitive plants and have not brought them in the past couple of nights, go ahead and grab them. we're still going to get to the coldest part of the day as we head through the next hour. we're 5 to 15 degrees below average for this time of year. the reason why is the mostly clear conditions. we have no blanket of low clouds to keep us warm. that's all going to change as we head through tonight. we have an area of low pressure situated to our north. the jetstream is hovering north of the bay area but we'll see a few showers sneak into the north bay late tonight into tomorrow morning that may make for slick conditions from santa rosa to novato. even areas north of the golden gate bridge as we kick off your tuesday. but that system clears out quickly and our highs will jump from the 60s into the 70s, getting some very comfortable conditions as we head through the middle of the week. 65 in livermore, 64 in fremont and 64 in san francisco. hold on for that seven-day outlook if you're looking for the rain. we'll time it out to your doorstep coming up.

5:38. first let's check your drive, good morning, mike. we'll start with the peninsula where 101 moves very smoothly through palo alto northbound past the -- well, the taillights past the willow avenue exit here and southbound with the headlights, a very evenly distributed flow here. we'll show you the maps because i had a couple of concerns on 280. there was an earlier car fire reported and it sounds like all crews have cleared from the roadway. there's a little slowing showing up southbound but i'll watch to make sure that doesn't stick around. southbound 280 right around 92 as well, reports of a very large deer that was hit and in the slow lane but chp has not given me an update in the last half hour. you may still have some activity but i've heard of no problems and seen no slowing so we'll track that. meanwhile the san mateo bridge moves smoothly. a little slowing south 880 heading down toward hayward. that's a pretty typical pattern. also livermore west 580 through the tri-valley shows slowing with speeds in the 50s and a little slowing through pleasanton now. a live look at oakland shows you

diving into another recession. tracie potts is live on capitol hill and she has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. let's be specific about those taxes going up. the bush tax cuts go away, which means not only do you see a smaller paycheck but that 2% payroll tax cut that we got this year, that would go away, unemployment benefits, if you're getting those extended benefits, those could go away. medicare payments could get cut and big cuts in defense and other government departments. and so this is a big cliff that they're trying to deal with. this week before sitting down with democrats and republicans, president obama has some meetings scheduled. you mentioned labor leaders. they sit down with the president tomorrow. progressive groups as well. business leaders on wednesday. this has been a big concern of republicans about how small businesses might get hit with this. and then on friday, democrats, republicans, top loaders here on capitol hill and the president for their first talks, perhaps negotiations, on how to deal with this fiscal cliff. still at odds, taxing the

wealthy in this country, something the president says we must do. something republicans say we can't do. the opening -- the beginning of their discussions on this on friday. jon. >> we will stay optimistic. tracie potts, thank you very much. it's 5:43. as americans commemorate veterans day, some bay area veterans getting a boost in san francisco. a new housing complex opens today in the city's south of market district aimed at helping homeless veterans get back on their feet. christie smith joins us with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. you know, this is going to make a huge difference this the lives of homeless veterans with disabilities, help them get off the street. her going to get a studio apartment inside of this refurbished building here, but also they're going to get some perks. things like yoga classes inside at a place called veterans commons. this is a permanent supportive housing unit for 75 homeless veterans who also have disabilities.

it's a project with swords to plow shares and the chinatown community development group. there are even outside decks built on. yoga classes, cooking classes. this is so important because it is cold out now and many shelters don't open until december. 12% of those served in winter shelters are veterans so projects like this are key. >> realize that they're human beings like we are. that we have a responsibility to them. they gave their lives or part of their life, a year or two or three or four, maybe a limb or their sight. what can we give back to them? give them their dignity, talk to them, take a moment. >> reporter: if you want to come down and check it out, they're holding an open house today at 150 otis street in san francisco. doors will be opening at 11:00 this morning and the open house runs until 3:00 this afternoon. reporting live in san francisco, christey shie smith, "today in bay." americans today honoring the

nation's veterans. today marking the monday observance of that holiday, saluting those who put themselves in harm's way for our country, safety and freedom. city, county, federal and state officials and offices will be closed today, including the dmv, courthouses and the post office. also most banks and libraries will be closed to observe the holiday. yesterday there were a number of ceremonies and parades honoring those who served. nearly 2,000 people gathering in castro valley to remember and pay tribute. this year was especially important to many, because the castro valley veterans memorial was officially unveiled. ♪ >> and in san francisco, market street closed off for the annual veterans day parade. this year's event featuring a salute to veterans of the wars of iraq and afghanistan, but veterans from at least six wars participated in this. for the very first time this

year, a contingent of homeless veterans were also walking in the parade. >> that's a very nice tribute. we want to check in with christina loren. everybody is wondering about the -- kind of changes in the forecast lately. >> yeah, we've kind of been all over the place. whoever you're going to be honoring, our servicemen and women today, make sure you do thank a veteran today. after all, freedom is not free. yeah, cold weather is free this morning and we've got it in abo abundan abundance. taking a live look, mostly clear conditions over san jose. that's the reason why it's so cold, we don't have that blanket of low clouds to trap in the warmth. so 36 in livermore, 42 in san jose, 39 in sunnyvale and we're at 36 in this morning in novato. that is cold enough for some frost. take it easy over the bridges and overpasses where you might find icy conditions this morning. as we head throughout the day today, this area of low pressure is lingering to our north. we'll see a few showers mostly in the north bay.

areas north of the golden gate bridge have a 20% to 30% shot as we wake up tomorrow. after which time high pressure builds back in. that's going to make for very comfortable conditions for us for the center of your week. in fact the 70s return as we head through tuesday, wednesday, even thursday before our next round of rain arrives. mostly sunny conditions. it's going to be really, really nice around here. an then more rain comes through. late saturday into sunday, even monday we're expecting a few showers mostly in the south pay as the system is brecreeping up from the south. so keep that in mind, there is rain on the way. we're going to get a lot down here as we wake up on friday morning, saturday and sunday. 65 degrees in livermore, 63 degrees in concord and 64 degrees in fremont. so your seven-day outlook tells the story. look at this, 72 degrees by wednesday, 72 on thursday. a few showers into the weekend and we'll clear out the second half of sunday into early monday. let's check on your drive.

>> even though we do have a veterans day holiday, a lot of businesses and schools observing that, we are looking at the burst. the first burst just a little lighter for san jose. we'll show you that on the map. we're looking at north 101 just north of 680 with a little slowing coming up towards 880. again, it looks like a typical pattern but we're showing a little lighter volume throughout the south bay. 880 showing blips of traffic but not really a traffic as far as the volume of any incidents. we'll continue to track that. and the earlier refrigerator reported in the roads, sounds like things will get cleared but we'll continue to follow that. stay over to your right lanes as you pass by the area. it's in your fast lane. we don't want that to be a problem for you. fremont, 680, 880 moving smoothly. here past the auto mall sign we're looking at southbound with the headlights, north with the taillights past the truck scales, a smooth drive here actually all the way up through oakland to the bay bridge toll plaza. you're at the limit for the nimitz.

over here at the toll plaza, the cash lanes are starting to back up. fastrak lane still has a good advantage. you can clearly see the east shore freeway. we'll take a quick look and westbound your commute direction, we have the university avenue overcrossing. the volume builds so the speeds are coming down just a tad bit, right around 60, not a major problem but that is the start of the slowing for that east bay major spot, guys, back to you. the race for a seat on the san francisco board of supervisors getting even tighter after the election. norman yee and f.x. crowley are competing to represent district 7. as of last night yee led the race by just 20 votes. election officials now examining provisional ballots by hand so it actually could be a few more days before that final day is in. but it is a close one there. meantime in berkeley, two controversial measures appear to be losing by a slim marge en. measure t would allow taller buildings an more development in west berkeley.

it was trailing by 426 votes out of almost 45,000 ballots cast. and measure s, the proposed ban on sitting on the sidewalk, was losing by about 1400 votes. it is 5:50 right now. coming up, the cross country commitment that has the ncaa stepping in to make a stanford student's possible dreams come true. wall street open this morning, even though many organizations are not. we'll take a look at the markets coming up in business news.

let a student do that. here's his dilemma. he's a rhodes scholar candidate and his team is competing in the cross country championships saturday in louisville, the very same day he needs to be at a very important meeting with the rhodes selection committee, which happens to be nearly 2,000 miles away in seattle. the only way to run and then make the meeting is by private jet. now, originally the stanford senior had decided he would run this weekend and skip that meeting. but now he may ultimately be able to do both and we hope he will. we will keep you posted. mlb handing out some major hardware this week. it will announce who has won the league's biggest awards, starting with rookie of the year. the a's have a player up against mike trout who is also considered a strong candidate for the american league most valuable player. the winner will be announced at 3:00 p.m. we can tell you wall street very serious about its holidays. scott mcgrew says a regular day at work. >> a number of school systems
