reported right here. i'm going to swing that camera around and tell you what we find coming up. right now we find a live look outside from the south bay. that is san jose starting off your monday morning on this november 19th. this is "today in the bay." it is straight up 5:00. good morning, everybody. very happy you could get up with us very early this morning. i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we begin with a developing story. at least 80 air strikes by israel as violence along the gaza strip continues. we've got a live look at gaza where at least 16 people were killed in the latest attacks. overnight israel targeted weapon storage facilities, police stations and training camps. in response at least 11 rockets landed in israel this morning, but so far no reports of injuries or damage. at least 84 palestinians have been killed, 700 injured since that conflict began.

three israelis have been killed as well. as a family waits for some kind of closure in the kidnapping of 9-year-old michaela garecht, today will mark 24 years to the day date since she disappeared. family and friends will gather where she went missing back in 1988. christie smith is joining us live with more on today's vigil and a family's decades-long wait for any kind of answers. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. in just a few hours michaela garecht's mother will come here to the market where her daughter disappeared. hard to believe that it has already been 24 years, but family, friends and members of the community are going to tie yellow ribbons to a tree here and talk about michaela's case. she was kidnapped in 1988 as she rode her scooter with a friend to what was then called rainbow market. this comes after a bone fragment

was identified as belonging to a person between 5 and 14 years old. michaela was 9 at the time she disappeared. the test results have been delayed. the bones were identified as belonging to a 16-year-old victim of the speed freak killers, but there were apparently other remains mixed in. in the blog she keeps, michael's mom wrote to michaela 24 years later. that means that today marks 24 years since the last carefree day of my life and yours. 24 years since that last time i was able to be there to still your fears in the night. that ceremony is about 10:00 this morning. that is the time of day when michaela disappeared. reporting live in hayward, christie smith, "today in the bay." investigators are trying to figure out what caused a deadly three-car crash in sunnyvale. one woman was killed and six others were hurt when their cars collided yesterday afternoon. it happened on dwayne avenue

just a few blocks from san miguel elementary school. witnesses tell nbc bay area people often speed through the area because there are very few stoplights. police have not said if speed actually played a part in the crash. investigators at this hour still trying to identify a body of the -- a body found on the san francisco bay, that is. the coast guard making that discovery in the water near the golden gate bridge yesterday morning. investigators say the middle-aged man was not wearing a life vest. no other details are being released. san jose police are looking for a second man accused of leading officers on a violent crime spree late friday night. one officer is hurt, one man is in custody this morning. marla tellez is in the newsroom with what police are trying to do to find him and what they are doing later this morning in response to this rash of crime. >> reporter: good morning. first of all, san jose police are offering a $10,000 reward for information that will lead them to that second suspect. secondly, they're holding a press conference this morning at

city hall to talk more about who this person is. here's a rundown of what happened friday night. it's a lot to take in. police say the outstanding gunman, along with this guy, 26-year-old jonathan wilbanks, who is in custody, went on a robbery rampage. within a couple of hours they allegedly robbed four businesses within a 12-mile radius in san jose. they did so armed and dmaend mun -- demanded money at each spot. then they allegedly spot and killed 22-year-old rory park pediford during an attempted carjacking. after a car chase and shootout with police in south san jose that left one officer injured, officers arrested wilbanks and this morning the hunt continues for his accomplice. police and the public are anxious to get him off the streets. >> anybody who's willing to take part in four armed robberies and shooting at a police officer, basically trying to kill one of our cops, is as dangerous as it

gets. >> it does make me a little concerned. more nervous because if they're roaming the streets, that means they're at large and we're all at risk and that's not good. >> reporter: now, the officer that was shot during that shootout is okay. he is recovering from minor injuries. i mentioned police are holding a press conference today. that's at 9:30 this morning at city hall. mayor chuck reed and the assistant police chief are going to be there. we are hoping they identify that second gunman. jon? >> all right, marla, thank you very much. oakland port workers ramping up for a 24-hour strike that will start tonight over contract talks. this is a live look at the port of oakland where workers are all set to get picketing. that strike kicks off at 9:00 this evening at oakland international airport. tomorrow they will target both the airport and the port. workers say they have gone 16 months without a new contract plan. the strike coming just days after port executive director omar benjamin announced his

retirement following allegations of excessive spending at a houston strip club which he in turn expensed to the city. the san francisco board of supervisors will decide this week whether to give the go ahead for hundreds of microapartments across the city. this is time lapse video we shot in our cafeteria of just how how small they are. the rooms were designed with young tech workers in mind. maybe young tiny tech workers. a committee will vote today. if that plan is approved. a vote pie the supervisors could take place tomorrow. >> you could have a ping pong table in your house. >> yeah that, and nothing else according to that right there. >> can you imagine a thanksgiving feast in those small quarters? we're looking good to today. 55 degrees in san francisco, 52 in novato, 53 in san jose and 52 in sunnyvale, good morning to you. grab that coat, ditch the umbrella for today. one day only.

and in a blog entry published mcafee attacks them both claiming he was misrepresented in the reporters' pieces. he's also describing in great detail, the disguises that he uses to avoid arrest, posing, he says, as a drunk german tourist wearing a bandage on his face. other times he pretends to be a tamale salesman. i darken my face with shoe polish and stuffed my cheeks with bubble gum. in his blog this morning he indicated he has prewritten material past his arrest should that come and araininged for someone else to keep posting. cisco systems bought private networking company moracki. they will pay $1.2 billion for the san francisco company. moracki is greek for doing something with passion. the market continues to sink. let's turn to seema mody at cnbc

world headquarters. good morning, seema. >> reporter: good morning. pulling out some greek this morning, i like it. futures are higher as the markets come off another down week. it is down nearly 5% since election day but stocks did close higher on friday on positive comments from the white house and top lawmakers about the possibility of striking a budget deal to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff. it's a haolidaholiday-short week but we get a report of existing home sales today and numbers tuesday and wednesday on housing starts, consumer sentiment and unemployment. plus ben bernanke speaks as well. the dow rising 45 points on friday to close at 12,588 and the nasdaq closing up by 16 points. top news today, hostess brands has a liquidation hearing today in new york at 2:00 p.m. eastern. the 82-year maker of wonder bread and iconic snack foods like twinkies announced friday

it was closing after failing to get wage and benefit cuts from thousands of striking bakery workers. the move means most of its 18,000 employees will lose its jobs. a liquidation could take up to a year. several third parties have expressed interest in buying some assets, so twinkies could find a second lease on life. back to you. >> seema mody, thank you very much. over the weekend, jon and laura, nintendo started sending that new wii. >> wiiu, right? >> right. >> don't sound so surprised. >> laura a gamer now. >> laura does do video games. thanksgiving now just days away and thousands of needy families right here in the bay area getting some extra help to help put that turkey dinner on the table. bob redell is live at sacred heart community service in san jose which in just a few hours will be handing out 4,000 boxes of food. what a great event, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon.

yeah, this will start about 9:00 this morning and run through wednesday. what families will do, they'll come here to sacred heart community services and pick up one of those cardboard boxes. they have at least 4,000 of those prepackaged. you can see what's inside for these low income families. they have got canned goods, beans. they get some fresh veggies and a frozen bird. obviously something to help them for their thanksgiving meal and maybe even last a little longer than that. based on the long line of people who camped out a week and a half ago to preregister for these boxes, sacred heart community services is expecting to feed at least 4,000 families. that would be the same as last year, which was a record number for the agencies, but they won't know for sure what the true demand is until later in the week. they fear they could be looking at a new record, whatever that would be. in spite what we read about this economy being post recession, they're not seeing it. >> it was crazy. there were a lot of people in here. so what we see is a lot of

people still struggling. they don't have full-time employment yet. maybe they have part-time jobs. even if they do, they are still lower paying jobs. those living wage jobs just aren't there as much so a lot of people turn to us for help. >> reporter: and here in their freezer you can see it's jammed packed with frozen birds. if you look back there you get a good sense. he's also got some chicken. in spite of the fact they have got this much in here, they still are short by about 1,000 birds. they are asking if you can help. cash is king because they can buy those in bulk or otherwise they are looking for donations here. you can google them. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> it's really nice to make a difference. >> still not too late to help out. it's 5:16. christina loren is here to tell us about the weather. what are we looking at heading towards thanksgiving? >> we're looking pretty good. we had a lot of people turn out for our own annual food drive over the weekend. thanks for coming out, shaking our hands and for all the

you're coming out of san francisco. the niners are playing the bears tonight. it's going to be the traffic heading south starting at 1:00 or 2:00 pause the parking lot opens at 2:30 for that monday night football fame. >> thank you very much. it's 5:20. the oakland police officers union has written a scathing critique of the city's police department. it comes just three weeks before a federal judge will hear arguments over whether oakland should hand over its police department to federal authorities. the sf chronicle reports attorneys for the union filed a declaration claiming the department's top officials are ineffective. it also accused commanders of leading the public on as they fail to install reforms mandated pie a civil rights lawsuit. on the ice it is back to the bargaining table. finally talks resuming between the nhl and the players union. as you know, games have been cancelled through the ending of this month and more could be lost if today's talks do not go well. not a lot of positive to report

marla tellez is live in our newsroom with what police are doing to try to catch the one man still on the loose. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. police have not released a description of the suspect who is still on the run today, but we are hoping to learn more about him at a press conference a little bit later this morning. police say he and this guy right here, 26-year-old jonathan wilbanks of san jose, robbed four businesses friday night. a little caesar's, a gas station, jack in the box and a spa all within a 12-mile radius, all in san jose. right after they attempted to carjack a 22-year-old man at this 7-eleven, police say they shot and killed him. this morning a memorial sits in the parking lot where the man lost his life. after a police chase through city streets and a shootout at tully road, police took wilbanks into custody but his accomplice got away. they say he is as dangerous as it gets and the public needs to be aware. >> when you hear something

tragic as what had happened with the robberies and the shootout, you know, you just got to be on your toes and just watch out. >> reporter: an officer was shot during the shootout but he is okay and recovering from minor injuries. police are offering a $10,000 reward for information that will lead them to that second suspect. they're also holding a press conference at city hall with mayor chuck reed to talk about the friday night crime spree. that meeting happens at 9:30 this morning. laura. >> thank you, marla. police are looking for two men involved in a deadly shooting in menlo park. 42-year-old kerry cudlip and a woman were sitting in his car when at least two people approached them. at some point shots were fired and police found cudlip's body lying in the street. the woman has not been identified but is alive. witnesses saw two membership in dark colored hooded sweatshirts running from that area. police have not said if the man was targeted or if it was a

random attack. that vallejo teen accused of a violent assault on a 65-year-old woman is due in court today. 14-year-old caviar king accused of attempted murder, assault, robbery and kidnapping. he's expected to be tried as an adult. police say king kidnapped a woman at gunpoint and forced her to drive to another location. he then sexually assaulted her, bound her with duct tape and dumped her on the side of the road. that woman was seriously hurt but is expected to make a full recovery. a hearing being held trying to determine the mental competency of the gunman accused at the shooting spree at oikos university. he is on trial for killing seven people and trying to kill three others during a shooting rampage earlier this week, lawyers for goh asking for the criminal case to be put on hold last month while he undergoes psychiatric tests to try to determine whether or not he is fit to stand trial. as a family waits for

well in the central valley was identified as belonging to a juvenile. it was among bones being analyzed of a 16-year-old girl believed to have been a victim of the so-called speed freak killers, named that because they were allegedly high on meth during a series of killings in the 1980s and '90s. there was a delay, though, in testing of that bone. the bones were sent to a second lab. the ceremony is today at 10:00 this morning, about the same time that michaela disappeared. that market is now known as mexico super. reporting live in hayward, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. it is 5:34 right now. we all know keeping the roads to tahoe open every winter is a very, very tough job soechlt tough in fact it is the new focus of a new national geographic documentary. this is video shot of highway 50 just yesterday on the way to south lake tahoe. the brand new show will be

called "hell on the highway." this will focus on the winter of 2010-2011, when more than 700 inches of snow fell. this documentary is looking at what caltrans and the chp did to keep interstate 80 and the donner pass open during that downfall. the documentary is created by the very same company that made "deadliest warrior." morning. 53 in san jose. the cold spot or your outlying cities like gilroy, fairfield in the 40s this morning. what's happening is area of low pressure is lingering to our north. this will start to drop into the area as we head into tonight but high pressure will keep most of the area dry at least until tuesday. some showers starting to sneak into the north bay at 7:00 p.m. this evening but they stay to the north all the way until 10:00 a.m. tuesday. this is when it starts to get active, between 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. showers start to slide to the south of the golden gate bridge and the whole thing blows out by 9:00 a.m. wednesday morning. so same deal as the last two systems. a lot of the rain will come down while we're sleeping. temperatures comfortable. 67 in livermore, 65 in san jose. 65 degrees in concord and 66 degrees in san francisco. your full forecast is just a few moments away. we want to help you make those plans for your thanksgiving feast and thereafter. of course friday is a big shopping day.

also some 45 rockets being fired out of gaza into southern israel. it just seems to be going back and forth. meantime the world is concerned about this escalating conflict turning into an all-out ground war. israel has said they have got troops on the ready to go into these palestinian areas if necessary. china weighing in now, asking israel to show maximum restraint and not exercise overuse of force here. egypt is involved. they are trying to negotiate some sort of truce between the two and they have laid out some parameters, although we have no word yet that those have been accepted. president obama, who has been traveling in southeast asia, has been trying to stay on top of this by phone. he's been talking with egypt's president, turkey's prime minister, israel's prime minister. he said over the weekend that we've got to back israel's right to defend itself, that the only way this is going to stop is for those rockets believed to be launched from hamas, at least

from hamas strong holds, to stop coming into israel from gaza. that's where things stand right now. still quite a volatile situation this morning. >> tracie potts, thank you very much from washington, d.c. also new this morning, president obama is on his first post-election trip abroad today visiting southeast asia. the president and secretary of state hillary clinton snaupd me an -- stopped in myanmar early this morning. they met with an activist where she spent several hours under house arrest. during the visit they discussed myanmar's efforts to establish a democratic government. >> the friendship between our two countries is of long standing. the united states has been staunch in its support of the democracy movement in berma and we are confident that this support will continue through the difficult years that lie ahead. >> after visiting myanmar, president obama flew to

cambodia. the trip makes him the first sitting u.s. president to visit the two countries. back here at home, it was less than two weeks ago that we saw hundreds of needy families lining up for a chance to receive thanksgiving dinner. today sacred heart community service will hand out boxes filled to the brim with food for the holiday. bob redell is live where volunteers have already started to get things ready. good morning, bob. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, lower avmt because these families will be showing up within the next few hours. the pickups start around 9:00 this morning and run through wednesday. sacred heart has been doing this for 48 years now and the families, low income families, this is what they'll be getting. a box that should take care of them on thanksgiving day and last a little bit longer. they have got canned goods, grains in there, to the right some vegetables, a frozen bird. they're going to try to get everyone a frozen turkey if not chicken. these are all the boxes that they will be handing out over the next few days.

these have all been prepackaged. the people who have preregistered just have to come up and pick them up. based on the long line of people who camped out a week and a half ago to preregister, they are expected to feed at least 4,000 families. if that number holds, it would be the same as last year, which was a record number for the agency, but they don't know for sure what the demand will be until later this week and they are afraid based on what they're hearing out there, based on what they are seeing in terms of what's going on in the economy, they are afraid that number could be higher. >> the need is great. unfortunately what that means is post-recession, i'm not sure we can see post-recession. we are still seeing very high levels of need since when the economy turned down. they have not gone down at this point in time. so a lot of people continue coming here. >> reporter: now, one thing that they do not have enough of are

so we take it to your satellite radar compilation. we do have some showers lurking to our north. the system will be kept out of the bay area and be nudged to the north throughout the day today as high pressure starts to build in. we've got a really good-looking day shaping up for your outdoor activities, any shopping or anything you've been putting off because of the rain. you've got about 24 hours before our next system arrives. the system will dive to the south throughout tomorrow and that will keep the jetstream kind of to our north, but the north bay will see the first showers starting tomorrow. we won't see much of the activity until wednesday morning and this is how it's going to measure up. about three-quarters plus in santa rosa, half an inch in napa, quarter of an inch in fremont and down here in san jose, the rain shadow of the santa cruz mountains keeps our numbers below a quarter of an inch of rain. nonetheless, anything this time of year will replenish our reserves for the summertime months. 67 for livermore today.

this happened last month and now bishop patrick mcgraw saying it was a mistake to allow the man to work on their sound system. a parent notified a sheriff's deputy that the man was a sex offender but was told that he had a signed note from the diocese giving him permission to be there. tu point it is still not clear who wrote that letter. we'll learn more today about the chevron refinery fire and what the company is doing to prevent another disaster from releasing harmful chemicals into the air. they will hold a special meeting to get an krup date on tupdate investigation. an independent test of surrounding neighborhoods found cancer-causing chemicals still present in and around homes. chevron insists there is not a significant risk from the fire, citing the conclusion of experts who analyzed the fire right after it happened. it is 5:51 right now. coming up, this is never a good sign for an organization.
