4:01 am
chuck todd is traveling with the president. chuck, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, lynn. it's safe to say the events in gaza have overtaken or overshadowed what the president has been working on here in southeast asia. i can tell you this, last night the president was on the phone until 2:30 in the morning, first with egyptians president morsi and then israeli prime minister netanyahu. then back on the phone with morsi. the reason there, obviously talking to netanyahu trying to get a sense of what it would take to prevent him from doing the ground invasion into gaza. the talks with morsi are about, this is the egyptian leader, has the direct contact with hamas. neither united states or israel has that. the decision to send secretary clinton, i'm told by white house aide, is neither an acknowledgment that things are close, nor do they feel as if things are stuck. they're hoping her presence,
4:02 am
first in israel and then in the west bank meeting with the palestinian authority, then in cairo could nudge along the process to see if they could get to a point of some sort of negotiated ceasefire. as far as the united states is concerned, the spokesperson says what that begins with is hamas stopping the rocket fire into israel and a longer negotiated settlement they hope can be agreed upon. >> chuck todd in cambodia. thank you. as he just mentioned, secretary of state hillary clinton is heading directly from cambodia to israel to try to work out that diplomatic situation to the violent escalations of tensions in gaza. nbc's martin fletcher is live in tel aviv for the latest situation there. good morning to you, martin. >> reporter: lynn, good morning. the leaders here, israeli and palestinian certainly need all the help they can get to come down from the high trees in which they find themselves. the israelis were attacked this

morning, 30 palestinian rockets landed near one town south. one person was injured. no serious damage was done. at the same time israel is continuing to pound palestinian targets in gaza. they filled four people today including two children. the question is what is next. there are intention negotiations going on particularly in the arab world to put in action a truce to stop israel's ground invasion of gaza which is very much on the cards. we've got the obvious poison the border, reserves are being called up. the help they need is to get down from that position they find themselves in because it's pretty clear that israel doesn't want to attack. it's pretty clear that hamas don't want them to attack. both sides essentially have reached their war goals already. israel killed a liter. it's attacked more than a thousand palestinians targets,
