thanksgiving holiday. 46 degrees to start in san jose. 45 in livermore and 46 degrees in san mateo. if you're up right now, chances are you're already getting that dinner prepared. the good news is if you wanted to, you could eat on your patio later on this evening. your full forecast is just moments away. we also have more rain on the way. we'll tell you when coming up. right now i'll send it back to you two and the top stories of the kay. that's right. new this morning east palo alto police investigating two shootings. the first happened on fairington way around university avenue around 5:00 last night. a man was shot in the leg in a home. the second shooting was three hours later less than a mile away on tulane avenue. the victim was shot twice but was able to get to the hospital on is own. all lanes of interstate 580 open again this morning after a shooting investigation shut down the westbound lane for hours. police say they heard reports of two cars shooting at each other

near the seminary exit. the freeway shut down almost three hours during that investigation. a second crime scene was discovered about a mile away on hilton street where police found a body. police say they don't know if it's related to that shooting. the lawyer of the man charged in a deadly crime spree in the south bay says his client is remorseful. jonathan wilbanks barely raised his head in court yesterday. he is charged with killing rory parkpettiford of campbell and trying to kill a police officer. wil banks' younger brother is stunned and feels sympathy for the victim's family. >> we all need to unite and donate to the victim's family. i don't know why this stuff happens but that's the only way to make the situation better right now. >> wilbanks could face the death penalty. police are still looking for a second suspect who took part in the armed robbery that say preceded the deadly shooting. there's a $25,000 reward for his

capture and conviction. police are doing what they can to help the family of rory parkpettiford. officers have created a site called cops for rory. we checked the site and just $500 has been donated. to help out -- >> police still looking for a hit and run driver. two cars hit a pedestrian who was apparently jaywalking near the intersection of alum rock and jackson at about 6:00 in the morning. the first driver in a dark-colored sedan hit the man and sped off. a second driver also hit the man but did stop and is cooperating with police. meantime, rohnert park police looking for a man as a person of interest in a hit and run that happened back in october. investigators believe he hit a

bicyclist from behind near the in and out burger. the victim still recovering from a number of injuries and right now investigators say they used surveillance video and eyewitness descriptions to identify the man. 4:34. the man who admits he broke into the home of the late steve jobs is apologizing to jobs' widow. kareem mcfarland admits he is guilty of breaking into the home, stealing electronics, champagne and jewelry. investigators also linked him to several burglaries around the bay area, but it's an apple gadget he stole that helped track him down. he entered a plea before a judge but he didn't stop there. he sent an apology letter to jobs' widow as well. the deputy district attorney said he read mcfarland's apology letter and believes it's sincere. >> i think so. i think he made a terrible mistake and he certainly affected a lot of people. he'll have to pay for what he did. >> mcfarland will be sentenced in january.

volunteers at a well-known bay area church are working very hard this morning making sure thousands of homeless people have a nice warm meal for thanksgiving. 500 volunteers at glide memorial have been working all week preparing hundreds of turkey and thanksgiving trimmings for the people who might otherwise go hungry. this morning they're putting those finishing touches on everything there. christie smith has just arrived on scene with all those volunteers and we'll check back with her to check in and see what's happening a little later on coming up at 5:00 a.m. in the meantime an oakland family is turning thanksgiving dinner into a community affair. fred morris and his family have been feeding the hungry for the last five years. morris, his mother, godmother and aunt cook and use their own money and donations from the community to prepare that dinner. they're expecting to feed about 500 people this year. >> it is people that, you know, has lost their jobs and people that has -- you know, have children.

some parents say well, i didn't ever really think i would be in this line, but they're in the line now. >> we get folks from all walks of life. it's great to show love and to give the love to the community. >> the morris family will serve their thanksgiving dinner at the rain bow recreation center in oakland today at 11:00 a.m., and they're going to serve that until the food runs out. very, very nice. we'd like to remind you of another way to help local families. nbc bay area and safeway stores teaming up for the end hunger now food drive. i was in morgan hill last weekend. it was a lot of fun meeting the folks out there collecting the donations. you can still help, whether it's canned food or money. you can donate from now through the christmas day holiday. donations go to local families. >> it's been strong so far. about 27,000 bags have been

donated. >> a generous bay area we live in. beautiful too. >> you guys had a great time. great stuff. 4:37. christina loren was part of that mix and she's here to tell us a nice day for thanksgiving. >> yeah, you might be mixing up your stuffing right about now getting ready to feed your family and friends. you know what, you can do so outdoors this year. it's going to be very, very nice. in fact we'll be the envy of the nation here in the state of california and in particular the bay area. 48 degrees in san francisco, 44 degrees in sonoma to start and we are at 39 degrees. it is cold up in napa, grab that coat. temperatures are dropping like a rock because we've got clear skies overhead. i want to point out, though, you see that fog, that little white patch? we've got some tulle fog developing in the central valley. keep that in mind if your travels take you that way. visibility is down to a quarter of a mile from time to time. so let's talk turkey.

now, getting ready for the macy's day parade is something that goes on year round. >> it's one of the elements that starts as a very special sketch. we sit around with the artists in the studio and talk about the ideas that we want to see come to life. >> reporter: that realization comes now, as floats are moved into place and massive balloons filled with helium, ultimately pushing them to the sky. but this year organizers are hoping to lift more than these familiar characters. they want to help raise the spirits of so many affected by sandy. >> the parade has always been about family. it's always been about coming together and it's about thanksgiving when everybody gets together to celebrate. this year it's even more important. the parade, i believe, will represent hope for everybody in the tri-state area. >> reporter: hope that dozens of communities desperately need, with debris scattered for miles. also a chance to say thank you to those who rushed in to help. >> we've got a float dedicated

now. the judge approved liquidating its assets. that came just a day after a last-ditch effort toned the strike failed. about 15,000 workers being laid off immediately. >> it's like, you know, a stab in the heart. 30 1/2 years on the job. i have a wife, kids, mortgage. i have to provide for other people. >> hostess says it will keep about 3,000 employees on hand to help with the initial phase of the winddown. that entire process should take about a year. hostess, for the record, was founded way back in 1930. >> pretty amazing, a tradition there. bargain hunters are getting a head start on black friday. big retailers like target, old navy, walmart, they're opening their doors later today, trying to entice shoppers away from the dining room. others are spending the holiday in line already. people have been camping outside best buy in pinole for days. the quest is bargains is proving

divisive. some love the crowds and discounts. others say they're losing track of the real meaning of thanksgiving. >> at 12:01 a.m., it's still way too early to be opening for a business day action even though i understand about the sales and everything. but at least give the people some sleep, you know. unless people have time to be with their families for at least the whole day. >> you've got to remember the workers on the other line and some of those workers and shoppers are pushing back. pro tempters actually marched inside walmart in oakland yesterday. they say the retail giant is forcing employees to work the holiday. an on line petition asking target to close on thanksgiving now has more than 300,000 signatures. if you're one of those shopping warriors, and you know who you are, and you want to be part of that thanksgiving crowd, we're here to tell you different stores are opening their doors at different times this year. walmart around the bay area opening for business right after dinner time. that will go off at 8:00, along with sears, k-mart and most of the toys r us stores.

then an hour later most target stores will open up at 9:00, and best buy will jump it off at midnight. the witching hour. for those who wish to avoid that mass and all those crowds out there, many of those stores are already offering some big-time discounts online so just jump thoon that worldwide web and shop till your fingers drop, i guess. >> click your way to happiness. >> well said. >> i think you may want to get outside and work off some of that turkey. >> you can have emotions running high during that shopping experience so that will help you burn off some calories. we've got a good-looking day shaping up. i advise taking a fanny pack as well, that way you can easily access all your charge cards. you know, spoken like a true consumer. i want to help the economy. temperatures are looking good. 39 in napa. it's cold enough for a jacket and as we head throughout the next couple of hours it's going to drop off even more so, so frost is possible. clear skies, that's what

happens. we have no blanket of low clouds to keep us warm this morning and temperatures are cold. gilroy at 42 degrees this morning. good morning to you. here's what's happening. high pressure takes over for the next couple days. that's going to nudge your temperatures up into the 70s but for today we're talking about the upper 60s, comfortable conditions for your thanksgiving plans. coastal cities today are going to hit about 65 degrees. that's pacifica and half moon bay. bayside, oakland and san francisco about 64 degrees and inland 68 degrees, getting close to 70. here in san jose it's going to be a lovely day for us and your family members. if you want to take them to the beach, you have every opportunity to do so temperaturewise as we head throughout the day and an even better day tomorrow. 60 degrees at 8:00 p.m. walmart, sears, k-mart, toys r us open then. winds will be strong, it's going to be cold out there and if you have to wait in line, you don't want to be shivering. so 59 degrees at 9:00 p.m. when target opens up.

seven-day outlook looks like this. looking really good for that. we don't have any dense fog exempt in the central valley. take it easy through there. expecting down to a quarter mile visibility throughout the morning but look at the 70s. they return as of tomorrow. saturday 71 degrees inland, perfection for anything you wanted to do outdoors or even inside. you don't have to run the heater or the ac over the weekend. monday into tuesday things start to change a little bit. we'll have a system lurking offshore and we think it's going to come in wednesday into thursday for the second half of the day on wednesday. that will bring us our next round of rain but we're going to see a good stretch of dry weather before we hit our next storm. back over to you guys. >> all right, thank you very much. well, quite a message coming out from san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi to mayor ed lee. let's have it out in public. during a speaking event on tuesday night, mirkarimi said it was awkward that he and mayor lee only speak through the chronicle. he suggested meeting in front of

a live audience to hash out their differences. the two have not seriously talked since the board of supervisors voted five weeks ago to allow mirkarimi to keep his job. lee led the effort, you'll recall, to oust the sheriff after mirkarimi pleaded guilty to a domestic violence charge earlier this year. we're getting some new insight on the nhl lockout and those closed door negotiations between the league and the players union. yesterday the players presenting an offer to the nhl, but that one was quickly rejected by the commissioner. after leaving yesterday's meeting, the commissioner telling the media, quote, when you're dealing with a union that really isn't trying to negotiate, there isn't much else you can do. with all that frustration mounting, sharks forward logan couture tweeting out it just seems the other side isn't willing to make it work. it hurts. games have been cancelled through the end of this month and more could be cancelled soon.

what about those niners? the niners quarterback controversy reportedly settled. colin kaepernick is in, alex smith is out. "sports illustrated" magazine says coach jim harbaugh told smith kaepernick will start sunday against the saints. smith is out with that concussion but reportedly the decision had nothing to do with his health. kaepernick had a sizzling performance monday night leading the 49ers past the bears. >> he was on fire. harbaugh likes to go with the hot hand. 4:49 right now. you're probably getting the big bird ready for the oven right now. everybody, make sure you have a healthy holiday. here's erica edwards with some turkey tips. >> reporter: this is your vision. this is what you have now. getting a picture perfect thanksgiving dinner on the table can be nidicey. the experts have heard and seen

it all. >> a college student trying to defrost their turkey quickly so they put it in the drier. >> reporter: this is a food safety expert. she said if you waited until the last minute to get a turkey, fresh is best, unless you plan on bowling with your turkey. frozen birds may not be that youed in time for thanksgiving dinner. >> you're going to have to defrost it in cold water and it takes about 30 minutes for every pound of turkey. >> reporter: to avoid cross contamination, keep meats separated from other food. the point is illustrated in this light-hearted public service announcement from the usda and other agencies. while some people swear by the pop-up timer, experts say the meat thermometer is the best way to make sure it's cooked correctly and it must read 165 degrees fahrenheit. >> check it down between the leg
