this is "today in the bay." and good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm jon kelley. good morning, everybody, and happy thanksgiving. this morning we're keeping a very close eye not only on the turkeys and the fixings but also the weather. we have a live look as the sun slowly starts to come up over the bay area on this beautiful thanksgiving day. christina loren has been along telling us it looks like mother nature smiling on us. >> yeah, you know, she's happy with the bay area this time of year and we will take it because it's going to be really nice out there. the last thing you want when you have family and friends coming into town, you tell them how great it is, they get here and it's pouring rain. that won't be the case today. temperatures will be comfortable. we're headed toward the upper 60s. it's a little chilly out there right now, but chances are you don't have anywhere to go. hopefully you're tucked into your bed getting ready to start cooking.
6:01 am
a little fog for the beginning of the day but not expecting much. everything that does develop will probably burn off by 9:00 a.m. and we're not tracking any significant fog in the bay area right now. noticing some dense fog in the central valley. if your travels takes you that way, just take it easy out there. tom the turkey is running around the newsroom. maybe we'll pardon him, we're not sure yet. 68 inland, 64 bayside and 65 at the coast. we'll make that verdict a little later on in the show. back to you two for now. >> it's a rough crowd in that newsroom. happening right now, one of my favorite stories of the year, helping out people in need. this morning the ovens are fired up, the kitchens bustling with activity over at glide memorial church in san francisco. year after year they do it, it's wonderful. that's where christie smith joins us live with a look at all that work to make sure no one goes hungry this holiday. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. happy thanksgiving. you know, the timing is perfect because the volunteers just walked in within the last minute

or two. before this the room was basically empty except for some vegetables and some food that was set up this morning. but i want to step aside so you can see them all set up. some of these folks have been coming here year after year after year. they come to the same exact spot to cut meat. what's happening is that the food was actually prepared before. these are cooked hams, cooked turkeys. they're going to carve them up and be serving them to the clients here at glide memorial church sometime around 9:00 this morning. first they're going to have a breakfast. but here with me this morning is jean cooper. good morning. >> good morning. >> reporter: how do you put this on? you're going to be serving at least 5,000 people. >> well, we start planning for this in august. and so we've gotten it down. there's a lot of same things we do every year. but we start early. we recruit a lot of volunteers to help us get it done. >> reporter: and you've been doing this for many, many years. are you seeing more people come in, a different type of people needing help or has it stayed the same? >> i came seven years ago.
6:03 am
when i first came here it was mostly homeless men that were in the neighborhood. what we're seeing now with the neighborhood changes, a lot more families. and in particular a lot more seniors. so there's a lot of people who are hitting that 55, 60 mark, disabled and, you know, really dependent upon us for food. >> reporter: and how are the donations this year, enough to make it for everyone? >> you know, they're always slim. i think that people are holding back because of the elections and so now that's done hopefully we'll see a fabulous holiday season of donations and volunteer hours. so really we'll see. you know, this is the beginning of the season and hopefully we can raise the money that we need to raise this holiday season so we can go on the rest of the year. >> reporter: for people at home today is obviously good. there are so many volunteers doing a great thing but you also have christmas. so what can people do to get involved in the future. >> you can go to our web, glide.org, and you can make -- if you hit donate, there's a

place where you can make a cash donation. real easy through the system. and then also the volunteers. we have a calendar up where you can either sign up for some of our holiday events between now and the end of the holiday season. but we also need a lot of help during the regular year. so if people really want to give, hold off until january and come on in because we don't get a lot of volunteers and we really still need the support to make it happen. >> reporter: all right, thanks so much for the wonderful thing you're doing here. again, breakfast starts at about 9:00 this morning and we will certainly be here. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. what a great deal out there. right here at nbc bay area, we are doing our part to help put food on the table the for bay area families in need and good news is you can help us. last saturday we kicked off our annual holiday food drive at safeway stores all across the area. there's laura garcia-cap on volunteering down in morgan hill. christina, marla and scott in
