6:39 am
the retractible doors. i like to call them walls of glass to the beautiful patio area for entertaining. you really see the architect's unique style here in the master suite. with its curved ceilings and 180 degree panoramic view. and all the rooms lead to this fabulous patio. vanishing edge pool, spa, incomparable view. thanks for visiting. i hope you enjoyed the tour. up next, we're in chicago to talk design and later an historic home in connecticut.

joshua king shows us how he was able to create a cozy space for his clients inside this ultra contemporary building. >> hi. i'm from los angeles, but today i want to show you one of my client's homes in lincoln park, chicago. although the architecture of this townhouse is very contemporary, my clients wanted a new space that was very cozy, very warm, friendly and inviting. here in the living room you'll see how i've create that had warm cozy atmosphere by using a lot of different textureal f fabrics. there is an amazing marble back splash to the fireplace which

rests under this giant tv. al f. there is an amazing marble back splash to the fireplace which rests under this giant tv.al fa. there is an amazing marble back splash to the fireplace which rests under this giant tv. we had to work with an open concept family room and dining room, so we create this had fabric treatment that hangs from the ceiling to give that you privacy.d this had fabric treatment that hangs from the ceiling to give that you privacy. you'll see the retro light fixture that we've done that sets the mad. and we used geometric design wall paper and offset it with factory gears. and we did a really cool bar that has a glass tile back splash and this really interesting shaped stainless bar sink that actually doubles as a champagne bucket when it's filled with ice. now we're on the third level of the town home which is comprised of the guest suites. these are a continuation of the design esthetic from the rest of the home, but they have a few
6:44 am
elements that set them apart. the head board we've created wings to give that you really cozy cocoon feeling like our sectional downstairs. but there is a great pop of yellow in the wallpaper. so in this guest bedroom, we avoided the use of color. you'll see around you these really dark gray walls envelope you and give you the warm cozy feeling from the rest of the house. and here we've highlighted it with the spark white custom head board that gives you that great pop without using any color at all. and the entire room, we topped off with this super interesting chandelier made out of branches painted warm beige color. the fourth floor is the entire master suite. this is my client's sanctuary. we've done a stitched leather
6:45 am
head board. there's a beautiful silvery blue color which is actually one of my client's favorites. it ties into the head board wall really well because we've used this woven wood wall covering that make this is ivory head board pop. and although it seems tight in here, you actually have everything that you need that helps you cozy up and hibernate through a long chicago winter. thanks for touring one of my latest projects here in chicago. i hope you've enjoyed it. still ahead, tips on acce accessorizing your living room. and up next, an idyllic home in the countryside.

at the end of evening. this bar we had built in vermont. the polls are antler horns and it's a beautiful piece of art. i'm a baker by trade and i spend 90% of my time in this kitchen. i make cupcakes and my wedding cakes. i've set thup this kitchen to me my life much easier. welcome to the master suite. this room sits on its own side of the house. i love this room because of the high ceilings, it's bright and light and cleheery. i love the claw fit tub. it's the best when you have to relax. just beyond me is our raised

vegetable garden. this is my weekly stress relief. and one of the traditions is to come out here on sunday evenings and peck our own tomatoes and basil which adds a delicious flavor to our sunday meal. and finally we come to my very most favorite part of the property. we have a beautiful outdoor fireplace where we spend many evenings on a chilly night. and all of this looks out on to our beautiful pool surrounded by perennial gardens. thank you for letting me take you on a tour of our home. we've had many good years here. coming up after the break -- >> and we are done and i could really use a fwlglass of that, first let me show you what i did.

i'm standing in my client's living space that's looking a little unfinished. she's looking for some glamour and pizzazz and i have some ideas to give her just that. this red furniture is obviously the star of the show with no supporting actors. we need to bring in some accessories that will make the space alive and glamorous. this dining space has some great pieces, but again, it's feeling a little unfinished. so i'm bringing in some items that will make it feel cohesive with the rest of the space, punch up the color and pull it together. this work space is living a little uninspiring and slightly dormish, but i know exactly what to do it make it feel much more elegant and also make work fun. i love this great shape and the scale is great for the wall. but the accessories are looking
6:54 am
a little dinky and getting lost behind the white wall. the last finishing touch of any space is the accessories. and it's time to get started. when i'm hanging oversized artwork like this one above a sofa, i love to leave at least 10 to 12 inches from the top of the sofa to the bottom of the painting. that way when you're sitting and reclining, you tonigyo you don' worry about your head crashing in to the artwork. flowers always add that touch of elegance that every space needs. i love giving clients furniture a new look by just replacing their pillows and adding a fabulous low. throw. incorporating my client's favorite art books is a perfect way to access rise. access rise.

as long as everything looks harmonious, you're going to end up with a fabulous book case. every make overneeds a little love. and we are done and i could really use a glass of that. but first, let me show you what i did. when we first started, this wall was blank. and now it has a burst of color and energy just popping off of the walls. and the addition of the flanking artwork elongates the wall and gives you a gallery-like experience. before this was uneventful. now i added accessories that capture the client's lifestyle, personality and interests. and also color. before everything was just melting into the walls. now you have these bursts of

colors, the stacks of books, a lot of symmetry. this box hides the ugly remotes and it looks beautiful on the table. additionally, a tray like this is ideal. you can put befrnl overages on newspaper, it keeps things contained and everything looks pretty. now, this is an inspiring workplace. the gentle curves looks much better. and now you have a cozy chair to work in and enjoy the amazing view and beautiful sunlight. i like how the accessories just brought the space to life and the artwork is the linking thread that makes the space cohesive. just that splash of red ties it
6:57 am
back to the eating area and the desk area and all of a sudden it flows beautifully. i believe this is the quickest makeover i've ever done. by just adding some accessories and bursts of color to the wall, the space now has this incredible energy and is ready for a dinner party. i hope you've taken away some fabulous tips and i'll see you next time. that's all for this week's episode. join us next week for more of america's top properties and designs. and if you missed something on today's show, head to openhousetv.com. you can also join our facebook family or follow us on twitter.
