5:00 am
a live look outside city by the bay san francisco along the waterfront this morning. a cold start to the morning. it's thursday, january 3rd. this is "today in the bay." it is 5:00 on the nose. good morning to one and all. thank you for getting up early with us. i'm jon kelley. >> still waking up. i'm laura garcia-cannon. we'll get to more of the day's top stories in just a moment. it is cold out there this morning. christina has a quick check of what to expect today. >> if you are one of the rare people that have a coon skin cap, you could get away with wearing it. it's cold out there. you can't get away with it unless your davie crockett. 36 degrees in santa cruz. temperatures will continue to tumble to near record levels as we progress throughout the next
5:01 am
2 1/2 hours. make sure you're ready to scrape that frost off the windshield if you parked outside last night. temperatures will go from frigid to mild up toward the 60-degree mark. fog returns tomorrow. temps will be mild through the finish of the week and we get showers potentially over the course of the weekend. i'll let you know where we have the best chance for that and which day that will be better for outdoor plans. now back to you and the rest of the top stories of the day. we begin with breaking news out of daly city. police and emergency crews on the scene of an apartment complex off interstate 280 not too far from the city's chinese christian cemetery. "today in the bay's" marla tellez is live in daly city with more on details that are going on right now. marla, what's the latest? >> reporter: well, laura, police are being extremely tight lipped. i just spoke to an officer as he made his way out of his patrol car here. i said can you tell us what's going on? he said i know nothing. that's the way this is being handled. we're waiting for more
5:02 am
information from daly city police. a press release supposed to be issued at any time. this is off 280 off hickey boulevard on imperial way. it came in as some sort of a shooting or a stabbing. here's what we can tell you at the height of it there were plenty of police officers, ambulances on scene. at one point our photographer captured a person being carried away on a stretcher. we also got shots of a white sedan inside the parking garage here and in the front driver's seat you can see blood stains on the driver's seat inside that car. again, this came in as a shooting or a stabbing. we are waiting to get this information confirmed. i spoke to a man inside the garage here and he tells me that actually police are on the third floor right behind us here. the third floor of this apartment complex and they're inside his neighbor's house in fact. we're waiting to hear more about that. also spoke to the security guard as you pull in here.
5:03 am
they said that from 2:00 to 3:30 there was plenty of police activity although the security guards here know nothing as well. we're going to stay on the story to bring you the very latest. live in daly city, marla tellez, "today in the bay." we also continue following breaking news out of san francisco where several people broke into a home and robbed a family at gunpoint. this happened on 40th and anza. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live this morning with something the suspects left behind that could actually lead police right to them. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. i have been speaking with two officers who were stationed out in front of the home and they tell me they were told to stay out here and watch a knife that appears to have been ditched in the planter right in front of the home there to the right. they say this call came in as an armed home invasion. multiple suspects with guns around 3:00 this morning here at 40th and anza in the richmond
5:04 am
district. there were several people home at the time. adult men and women. we don't know if they were tied up. we asked but officers here say they don't have that information. they do tell us that electronics were stolen from the home including an iphone and investigators tried to track it or ping it but that didn't work out. they think that perhaps the suspects when they left may have turned it off. the good news here no one was hurt. one thing investigators are looking into is just past where they are standing there is a metal gate to enter the home. this is two flats and one robbed was the one on the bottom but they say the gate does not appear to be broken so the question exactly this morning is how they got in. we'll stay on this and as soon as we have more information, we'll bring it to you. >> it's 5:04. this morning a first for google. after leaving china recently, we learned the tech company might be exploring new cyberspace
5:05 am
frontiers. bob redell is live outside of company headquarters with details of its plans for north korea. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. no official comment yet from google headquarters here in mountain view behind me. the ap is reporting that google ceo eric schmidt will be traveling to north korea possibly by month's end on a trip that is private, humanitarian in nature and possibly led by former new mexico governor bill richardson. that would be significant for a number of reasons. first off, north korea is very secluded. cutoff from the rest of the world. the last frontier in cyberspace. the country doesn't allow citizens access to the world wide web. some can go on a local internet controlled by the government. they want to bring the internet to everyone. whether schmidt will push for that but allowing the google ceo to visit could be very symbolic.
5:06 am
this is also interesting on timing. a couple days ago in a new year's day speech, kim jong-un emphasized the importance of bringing his country into the 21st century when it comes to digital technology and commuters. a leader of that country meeting with the leader of this silicon valley giant? again, that's still unknown. one expert tells the ap it's possible that north korea is interested in google technology but perhaps only when it comes to software for things like mapping technology. reporting live here outside google headquarters in mountain view, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, bob. with more on the story, scott mcgrew is here weighing in on the significance. you called to say a talking dog story. >> the important thing is not what the dog says, right, it's that the dog talks at all. so while we search for meaning
5:07 am
in this north korean visit or try to figure out why schmidt is going in the first place or why the new leader invited him, it's a good idea to appreciate that it's happening at all it nixon going to china on a much smaller scale perhaps. is google going to track the north korean market considering how few computers there are in north korea it probably doesn't need to. google hasn't been able to come to an agreement with china after all but the internet as represented by google coming to the people's republic in the form of one man is big steps. you look of gorbachev, when he first came to power you weren't sure what he was used to. we saw his wife for the first time. we saw kim jong-un's for the first time recently. look at what happened. it changed forever. russia got away from him. it's an interesting tiny first step. >> we know you'll be on top of it. thank you very much. >> on top of the forecast always for us, meteorologist christina loren joins us right now with a

look at the forecast. >> good morning to you, jon and laura. good morning to you at home. hold on a second. a wild hair there. we got temperatures out there that are freezing cold and it's really dry so, ladies, that means your hair will hold that curl all day long. 30 degrees in gilroy. 34. good morning in san jose. 36 degrees in san mateo. temperatures are running just about as cold as it was yesterday morning. this is the last day of frigid conditions. 5 to 10 degrees below average for this time of year. bring in those sensitive pets and plants. you'll also want to layer up this morning because we have a good looking finish to the day. temperatures climbing into the 60s by 4:00 p.m. inland. 61 degrees there. 60 bayside. 59 degrees at the coast for today. the weekend just around the corner now. want to help you make outdoor plans as we look rather dry. one day will be better than the other. we'll talk about that coming up and what's to come for next week as well. we'll give you a head start on everything. let's check the drive with mike. >> a good head start right now. light traffic flow right here.
5:09 am
this is a live look at 101 northbound. on the map we show you the entire area light because of light volume of traffic there. no problems for the south bay freeway except for this one. highway 9 at sanborn road in hills outside of saratoga. one accident working and pg&e just arrived on scene because of the accident had a car running into a pole. it sounded like it was either a telephone line or a cable line but pg&e is on the scene and we'll wait. no reports of live wires. expect traffic control in this area. watch the hills around the bay. we talk about colder weather, there may be black ice. we saw a couple reports of that over the last few days. we have no problems for the san mateo bridge. the high rise moves smoothly with a light traffic flow. this thursday we may see traffic increase. we'll see backups because folks are coming back to work. back to you. >> thank you very much. 5:09 right now. despite a couple tragedies, there are no plans to beef up

welcome back. san francisco's current tv will soon be al jazeera. current hosts on current will not necessarily be part of this new channel. >> good morning to you. this is the sentence i never expected to say. gavin newsom will not become
5:14 am
part of al jazeera. he has a show on current current tv. al jazeera will buy up the channel and will replace it with al jazeera. the purchase has very little to do with current itself but rather the fact that current was a struggling cable channel that appeared in a lot of homes and that gives al jazeera access. al jazeera had trouble finding space on american cable. it does have a really good ipad app which allows to you watch al jazeera english but now al jazeera on cable. markets had the best day of the year yesterday. something i can say no matter what because it was the first trading day of 2013. hampton pearson, it was a good day. good morning. >> reporter: you got that right, scott. looking ahead now we have futures a little lower after that monster market rally yesterday. investors reacted to the fiscal

you do have this young, new leader in the people's republic and he's telegraphed willingness to open up the country. just yesterday talking about reunification with south korea. also, we should be clear as bob pointed out, schmidt is going to north korea as a private individual and not as the chairman of the board of google. as much as schmidt can be separated from that, we'll always associate this with google itself. this is fascinating. this is something we'll continue to watch. >> very much so. thank you very much, scott. 5:33. breaking news in san francisco where a group of intruders broke into a home early this morning robbing a family at gunpoint. it's happening right now at 40th and anza in the city's outer richmond district.
