hitting the skids in san jose days before it becomes only bay area airport with a regular dreamliner service. marla is live at the airport this morning where the problems over shadow ohhing the ribbon cutting. good morning. >> good morning. certainly not great p.r. for the dreamliner. especially considering in just two days from now the boeing 787 made its debut flight from sjc. it will do so with a sold out fight. sold out means 158 passengers will board the dream liner at sjc bound for narita airport. in light of the problems the high tech dream liner has been working through. the aircraft debuted with all nipon airways in october of 2011. since then it's recorded five incidents that each made

headlines. problems ranging from electrical concerns in december to just yesterday when one of the 787s began leaking fuel on the ground at boston's logan airport. an aviation expert on the "today" show. you will hear from him in a moment. first we got feedback from passengers who said they were concerned by the news. >> they should test it better before they get people on it. >> i don't want to be on it until they get it fixed. >> i have confidence in the airplane. there are going to be teething problems with a new airplane. it's common. the first commercial aircraft made of light weight carbon composite.

21% less fuel than planes of similar size. waiting to hear back to see if they are making changes. for now by all accounts the dream liner flight is set to take off from here friday at 11:45 a.m. live from san jose international, marla tayes. "today in the bay." >> an update to breaking news near atlanta where four children are dead after a duplex caught fire. the children ranged in age from 8 months to 7 years. we have learned a 6-year-old child survived with no serious injuries after his mother threw him from the second floor window to safety. the mother, however, was severely burned and is now recovering at an atlanta hospital. the children's grandmother managed to make it out of the home without injury. the cause of the devastating fire is under investigation. >> also new this morning, san

francisco police now investigating an overnight shooting and stabbing in a neighborhood. the stabbing happened before 3:15 this morning on connecticut street. the victim was stabbed in the chest but is expected to survive. nobody so far is under arrest. almost two hours earlier police responded to a shooting down the street near connecticut and 25th. the victim was shot in the foot. he's now in the hospital. he is expected to survive. so far no suspects have been arrested. >> 6:04. maritime officials want regulations for ships moving through the bay after an oil tanker collided with the bridge in thinking fog. the ship is anchored in the bay this morning. the safety committee has rules to prevent ships from moving in nine critical maneuvering areas if visibility is less than a half mile. the bay bridge isn't considered a critical area. that may change. we have learned the coast guard sent a warning to the pilot just

before the collision. experts say there may have been confusion between the pilot and the foreign ship's crew. there can be problems with instrumentation. >> the crew passed alcohol tests. drug test results are pending. >> the settlement reportedly forcing pg & e to implement new safety measures here. the pipeline exploded in 2010. the mercury news says the agreement force it is utility to more closely study the life span of its aging pipeline and give the family progress reports.

slows worse at north livermore because of an earlier issue. there is debris and three cars with flat tires. quite a distraction. the off ramp could affect the flow of traffic. through livermore and pleasanton you proibl want to take the first exit. you probably already do it anyway. the orange on the map shows dense fog in the area. we have the commute okay but south 238 headed over from 880 dealing with the disabled vehicle sticking out into the slow lane as you approach the merge to 580 in an eastbound direction. unexpected slowing there. looking at the bay bridge we have a backup there as well. the fast track lanes not showing a big problem. we have a lot of cars coming down the east shore freeway. we'll see the lights turned on. back to you. >> 6:08 now. coming up, brace yourselves. the flu virus goes viral.

will decide if statistical grates should not be allowed into the hall of fame. barry bonds hit 762 homeruns and was the mvp seven times. it seems some voters are paying attention to wording that tells them to consider things like character, integrity and sportsmanship in their decision. bonds denied knowingly using steroids and was convicted of obstruction of justice. fans say they're going both ways. >> barry bonds excelled in an arena where it was a common thing. he deserves to go. he's a wonderful player. he built the park basically. >> yep. >> i don't think it's right. you might break records but you have to do it cleanly. you know? >> to be elected a player has to receive 75% of the vote. at at&t park during a visit last

a day after an electrical fire broke out in another plane after landing on friday. san jose will be the only airport with daily nonstop dream liner service to asia. in time for flu season a new facebook app helps you track down who gave you the flu. the app is called "help i have the flu." it is designed to help track down the suspects responsible for spreading the virus. with a click of a button the app a goes through friends' profiles looking for posts with key words like "flu," or "coughing." it will scan for people who made late night posts. the idea is sleep depry pags puts people at risk for getting sick. >> the company famous for letting you vacuum with a robot now takes you outside. >> we have a first look at the consumer electronics show in las

probably the same scenario today. we are back in the moderate air quality range. we had pollution at the ground. that's improved courtesy of on shore flow which will strengthen. we have a cold area of low pressure. a cold winter storm on the way to the bay area arrives as of tonight. it's packing more cold air than anything else. that's the big component of the storm system. we'll get showers. temperatures today will come down by five to ten degrees, 15 in some cases. throughout thursday we get a really rare opportunity. the timing looks right. we may get very low snow levels. a dusting is possible in san francisco. let's talk about that. we have the clock on the future cast. starting to get light showers in the north bay at 2:00 p.m. tonight. by 5:00 p.m. the bulk of the moisture comes through the silicon valley over the peninsula. at 8:00 p.m. we'll see a little bit of a break. this is when the cold air rushes in. at 3:00 to 7:00 a.m. tomorrow

morning if the spotty cells move on shore we could talk about no. it looks like the greatest chance of that will be along the coastline. san francisco, you're fair game for flurries in the twin peaks area. we'll be all over that. 56 in livermore. you will notice a cooler day. probably able to give the heater a break. you will need it. temperatures falling below the seasonal averages. low 50s prevailed thursday through sunday. then we'll climb into tuesday of next week. overall though staying dry. that storm track stays to the north as we head through next week as well. looking dry. 6:20. let's check the drive with mike. >> through the south bay, good volume expected. you saw some of the yellow go away. we have slowing in patches for a short period.

into the upper 50s. 101 here. 887 sticking around into downtown. we saw congestion. 280 up to 880. still sticking around there. 85 builds up the volume. starting to slow at 87. continuing up to 17. really kicking in over the next 20 minutes. just north of 17. we are also following a typical triangle. we have seen the orange and yellow kicking in. heading up to the airport for highway 70. a heavier volume of traffic here. the peninsula. flowing northbound through this area. past university. this is the off ramp here. getting congested through san mateo as well in both directions. on the other side of the bay looking at the bay bridge tall plaza where the lights were on after the last report. there is the back up forming in ten minutes.

who is the vice president meeting with today? >> gun safety advocates and victims groups. the focus for the white house has been to try to get consensus on the rules or laws they are trying to push into administrative changes as well. the president said and vice president biden said they want them in place for recommendation in terms of laws or administrative changes by the end of the month. >> they want to be fair. he's going to reach out to gun advocates as well. >> right. we'll hear from those owners and the nra, the national rifle association as they meet with him at the white house. again the white house has said they back the ban. looking at a broad based approach in terms of mental health and tightening up gun laws. they are sitting down with the nra. it will be interesting to hear what they say after we heard

from them. that's tomorrow. >> and it's being said momentum is fading for gun control after the school shooting in connecticut. what's in the way? >> well, things pass very quickly in washington. while the white house has really wanted to jump on the momentum that happened afterwards, some lawmakers here say they have other things that are more important to deal with first. top republican on the senate side, senator mitch mcconnell said they have the debt ceiling that we are approaching. likely next month. they have to deal with whether or not to extend that. fiscal cliff part two, you might call it. budget cuts could kick in to push down the road two months. all of that, he says, has got to be dealt with. he thinks they may not get to dealing with gun control until spring, maybe april. >> at least they are visiting it now. starting the conversation. thank you. >> now we want to update you with breaking news from lower

manhattan in new york city now. a ferry crashed at pier 11 injuring several people. the boat slammed into the dock. we are getting reports that several people are injured. the commuter ferry is operated by c streak which collided with pier 11 near wall street. it happened around 8:45 pacific standard time. emergency workers are being told there are 17 patients on the scene. we saw stretchers being carried off the ferry with the injured people. >> doing what they can to treat them at the scene now. you see emergency crews that arrived at the port there at pier 11 in lower manhattan this morning. following the developing story. look at the crowd. >> time now to check our local scene with the weather. christina loren is here. good morning. >> good morning. we have interesting weather shape up throughout the next 24 hours. a chance for rare bay area snow.

actually looking more promising as i check the models. this morning we are tracking very thick fog. give yourself time to reach your destination safely, especially if you are taking little ones to school. bundle them up. temperatures in the 30s and 40st. afternoon highs tumble by 5 to 15 a degrees in some cases. isolated showers on the way. as we head through tonight and tomorrow morning, overcast and cold for thursday. we are concerned about the potential for snowshowers even in san francisco. we'll head through the next report. 54 degrees at the coast. a good-looking day shaping up for outdoor plans. we do get a chance for a stray shower. your full forecast, 7-day outlook. you may be thinking about the weekend.

good morning, mike. >> we are thinking about monday as well. down to the bottom of the screen. that's your commute direction. we did have an issue as the folks were headed out to the maze, a crash that cleared quickly. no extra slowing. we have the bay bridge toll plaza with the metering lights on and the backup forming quickly. we have the return of the commute here. a look outside to see how things are picking up. volume hitting and sticking. just north of 680 and the map a shows you the situation. north 101 to 880 slowing past the airport. 87 from the bottom of the screen. you see this happen around capital expressway. 17 to saratoga avenue. that's where it's starting to build for the morning commute. another look at the maps as we travel to the east bay and tri valley with additional slowing to north livermore. west of 580 for the commute direction.

earlier debris caused three flat tires. orange means fog in the area. back to you. >> thank you, mike. governor brown expected to unveil his new spending plan tomorrow. this will happen in a news conference. this was a news conference from yesterday. brown said he will pro e pose a live within our means budget that spends more on higher education and k through 12 schools. other areases of the state budget like subsidized child care and the court system, brown says won't be so fortunate. >> changes are coming to how california measures success at elementary and high schools. the state superintendent of public instruction wants to change the star test. instead of multiple choice she wants the test to require students to think critically through problem solving. the state legislature must approve the new design and issue guidelines before the test can be rewritten. if all goes well the exams could

pictures from pier 11 where a ferry boat has struck a dock injuring at least 17 people. you see emergency personnel taking people away on stretchers. tried to treat them right there off the boat. they are trying to escort a lot of people off. we don't know how many people have been transported thus far as they are continuing to work this active scene. pier 11 is just off the south street sea port. people are covered in blankets, huddling together. a cold morning in new york. it's a story we'll continue to follow for you. it's 6:40 now. >> a piece of california history missing today from oakland. police now trying to get back the stolen property and track down thieves who took it. burglars broke into the oakland museum of california monday morning and stole a gold rush era quartz and gold box. it's worth more than $800,000. this marks the second time the

museum has been broken into since november. the museum release add statement that said the recent break-in is a loss to the museum and the community as these objects convey the state's heritage and the stories of its people. we expect more about the break-in later today when police and city leaders meet for a press conference. >> coming up, nightmare on board the dream liner. the runway issues for the high profile fleet of planes could keep high hopes grounded. ♪

we are monitoring a ferry crash where 17 people have been injured after that ferry struck a dock this morning. the crash happened on the 58 a.m. a ferry. it struck a loading barge. it was the first stop for the ferry. more than 300 people were on board. the crash itself is so large the impact threw people from their seats. >> big time emergency. you can see the hole ripped in the side of the metal. they take a tight shot on the right-hand side of the screen. they will try to figure out what happened out there. >> the good news is they haven't seen a lot of visible injuries to patients out there. hopefully no traumatic injuries to the people involved.

it's certainly something we continue to follow this morning out of new york's lower manhattan. a big ferry crash there. much closer to home. two flights, two glaring issues on one high profile airline. this morning issues on the runway may have the dream liner hopes hitting the skids days before it becomes the only bay area airport with regular dream liner service. some of the problems over shadowing friday's ribbon cutting. good morning. >> good morning. for scar tissue starters, united will inspect its entire fleet of boeing 787s before it considers flying another dream liner. now this as sjc here is getting ready to do that. make its debut flight for the dream liner set to take off here on friday bound for tokyo. by all accounts, the nipon airways flight can do so in

light of recent problems. most recent yesterday at boston logan airport. one of the 787s started leaking fuel while on the runway. it was the second technical problem for the creamliner in two days. on monday, a battery in the 787 caught fire while the plane was on the ground. the ntsb is playing that one. there is a group of airplane analysts who write it off as growing pains for the plane born over a year ago. it is relatively young. for passengers we spoke to, the dream liner sounds more like a bad dream. >> i think people are nervous to get in the air in the first place. if they hear there are issues it's scary. >> i'm a daring person. but i can't fight falling from the sky. >> i will fly on the 787 at any time.

twin peaks at 922 feet. you may see snow in san francisco tomorrow. skyline boulevard. you may get up to a half inch if the cells move over hamilton. today's highs, 56 in livermore and fremont. 57 in redwood city. isolated showers thursday make way for sunshine on friday. it will be cold around here. same goes for the weekend. maybe a stray shower on sunday. overall though looking chilly and really not expecting the heavy rainshowers until potentially the end of next week into the weekend when the storm track returns. mike, with the fog out there i already am noticing people on the roads. what are we dealing with? >> more folks returning from vacation and the fog. not a good combination. you have to lower the speeds. it's congested like in the south bay.

yesterday we had quite a bit of slowing. more congestion. north 101 from capital to the airport. very slow in the approach toward 280. the volume kicks in. we are looking for the commute to be affected by the low clouds in the area. they are already affecting parts of the east bay. south 880 through hayward up to the san mateo bridge and the toll plaza at the bridge slow. union city and fremont. that's kicking in. also for the foggy livermore commute. westbound 580 has been trouble. southbound 680 where you catch the fog around the golf course. another issue. the check on the approach to the backup at the bay a bridge. the east shore freeway shows a flow of traffic. you have a lot of companies

coming into the upper and mid 50s through berkeley. back at the curve you have the backup from the toll plaza. at the peninsula a lot of company kicking in. here's north 101, south 101. close to the limit still through palo alto and slowing through san mateo. back to you. >> we have an update to breaking news overnight in atlanta. four children including an infant are dead after a duplex caught fire. the children ranged in age from 8 months to 7 years. a 6-year-old child survived with no serious injuries after his mother threw him from a second floor window to get him to safety. the mother was severely burned and is now at an atlanta hospital. the children's grandmother made it out of the home without injury. the cause of the fire is under investigation. >> new details about the moments before a tanker ship crashed into the base of a bay bridge

tower. the coast guard sent a warning to the pilot moments before the crash. experts say there may have been confusion between the pilot and the foreign crew. the pilot's name is guy fleece. the crew passed alcohol tests. drug tests are pending. he's had three accidents at sea since 2009, all described as minor. it appears fog may have played a factor in the crash. there are rules to prevent chips from moving in nine areas in the bay if there is heavy fog. the bay bridge is exempt from the rules. for now the ship remains anchored in the bay area. the ntsb is launching an investigation. >> a woman facing charges in the death of a millionaire will be in court today. raven dixon is one of four people accused in the murder of ravi kumra in his home. the 22-year-old is charged with

>> thank you very much, mike. >> 6:58 a. to finish up we'll take you to new york city for a live look at lower manhattan where a ferry crashed into a dock. 17 people were hurt. one reported critically injured. the ferry. looks like a can opener tore open the side. the boat was coming from highlands new jersey and was trying to dock when the crash happened. about 300 people were on board. we are told about 50 people are being evaluated for minor injuries. >> exactly. there is one person said to be in critical condition this morning with a head injury. when that catamaran ferry hit the dock it was said to have the force of pushing people out of their seats. emergency personnel arrived quickly. they carried out several people on stretchers. they were treating them on the pier. no doubt the investigation will continue this morning. taking a look at the side of the ferry from new york. >> big time accident.
