is out there again. let's check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning. happy, happy friday, ladies. good morning to you at home. 31 degrees in gilroy this morning. 42 in oakland. 46 degrees in san francisco. as we progress throughout the next 3 1/2 hours, temperatures are expected to fall into the 20s. we don't have any just yet. i think as we head through 5:30 we'll start to see upper 20s in places like gilroy and napa getting very close. we do have a frost advisory in place. travel very cautiously. black ice likely in places up in the north bay. we'll track this for you all day long. a pretty good looking weekend shaping up. it's going to be cold today. first let's take a look at your drive. mike has a serious incident he's following. >> major injury accident reported in berkeley eastbound 80. these flares are all that remain because as opening tipping roll happened for our newscast, reports from chp said they just reopened all lanes. those flares until they burn out will be quite a bit of

distraction. this is heading away from the toll plaza and the maze. on the map you see this is opposite your main commute but this morning that's the only slowing heading away from the bay bridge. commute direction toward the bay bridge is light and clear as you just saw. this activity should start to clear up as the flares start to burn out. we'll track this and an incident for san jose coming up. back to you. >> thank you very much. sheriff's deputies in marin are on the scene of a deadly shooting overnight. the body of a teenage boy was discovered just after midnight at a home on cole court not far from the golden gate recreation area. investigators are still on the scene gathering evidence. right now we know it is the body of a 17-year-old boy that has been found and it appears he was shot to death. "today in the bay's" christie smith is on her way to marin right now. she will have a live report from the scene as soon as she gets there. also happening now, los angeles police outside the westchester mall where they think a woman is being held

hostage. officers say a pair of armed men entered the store and they took a woman to the back of the store. police are trying to determine what kind of weapons the men are possibly armed with. we'll continue to follow this story and update you as more information comes into our newsroom. more trouble with boeing 878 dreamliner just hours away from touching down in san jose's mineta international airport. overnight cracks appeared in the cockpit windshield of a 787 flying in japan. that plane landed safely. the newest issue comes as faa just announced comprehensive review of the plane dubbed the most technically advanced yet. today's order mandates a second look at the design, manufacture and assembly of the dreamliner. as we mentioned, this is a big deal for the silicon valley because it will land a 787 at sjc this morning. it marks the start of the

airline's direct flights to tokyo and beyond. now we asked ana about the recent issues with the plane but they referred us to boeing as for the new nonstop service from mineta and its impact on the silicon valley, business and tech reporter scott mcgrew will have details on that part of the story later this morning. 4:34 right now. a south bay family says investigators are not doing enough to find the person that killed their son three weeks ago and left his body on the side of the road. 24-year-old jacksen madsen's body was found on san tomas presbyterian thr expressway three days before christmas. who hit him and what happened is a mystery this morning. madsen's friends say he may have gotten into a fight at the spot. a downtown campbell bar which is the last place madsen was seen and then there's a 911 call. campbell place solice say came

his own cell phone just hours before his death. >> to know he had a 911 call of him huffing and puffing like he's running from something is all i can think of. it won't get out of my mind. >> he was a good kid. he deserves to have justice. someone is out running around that hit him and left him cold in the dirt. >> tough for that family. chp says it has specially trained investigators working the case. investigators are calling it a top brutality. one of the teenagers that participated in a gang rape outside of a high school in 2009 will be sentenced today. morales faces up to 27 years in prison after pleading guilty in november. morales is one of a group of men accused of raping the 16 year old. last october a man was sentenced to 32 years in prison for his

part in the vicious act. four other defendants in this case await trial. the families of two of the victims of last year's shooting rampage have filed wrongful death suits against the school. they were among seven people killed last april. they claim that they should have known shooter one goh was a serious danger after disagreements he had with staff. police say goh has confessed to the murders. earlier this week he was found mentally incompetent to stand trial. one east bay school district is making safety changes in the wake of the tragedy in newtown. martinez school district officials met with the police department this week to review existing safety procedures as all of the city's campuses. some immediate changes include locking all classroom doors during school hours and requiring all visitors to sign in at the school's office. also wear a badge while they are on campus. police will also beef up patrols

near campuses and lockdown drills will be conducted at every school within the next two weeks. the murder of nursing student michelle le will be in the national spotlight tonight. "dateline" will take a close look at how marc klaas helped the family as they searched for her body. le went missing from hayward in may of 2011. her killer, giselle estaban is now serving 25 years to life in prison. the two-hour "dateline" airs tonight at 9:00 right here on nbc bay area. 4:37. back to square one in the search for san jose's next police chief. current chief chris moore is retiring a week from saturday. the three possible replacements were rejected by a panel of community leaders wednesday.

heading out the front door. >> we'll tell you about the update in berkeley. right now san jose 101 northbound coming underneath that 680 interchange and traffic pretty light right here but there's also an accident, a crash in the south bay. the map shows you overall things are moving smoothly throughout. traffic flows nicely in the area. not sure if my maps are up and running actually. we'll assume they are. southbound 880 earlier accident cleared to the shoulder. slowing through the area. should be recovering now. there's also a construction zone where you will lose one of those lanes. just be careful about that. meanwhile, as we jump up toward berkeley, christina was talking about the earlier traffic issue. this cleared just minutes before we gave the last report. we had the chp reporting it clearing however there is slowing in the area and the live camera shows there is flares in the area that are just burning out. you see a series of three of them right now and one on right-hand side. cars away from us are east 80. commute direction west with

headlights. that's opened up. we'll show you a wider shot of this view coming up. back to you. >> if you have noticed a backup on the dumbarton bridge as you head to work, you are not alone. since the start of the year the commute has been especially bad. there is the reason for it. the metropolitan transportation commission says it closed toll lane four because it can't afford to staff it. coming up at 5:00 this morning, bob redell will be live at the dumbarton with what mtc is trying to do to fix that problem. there are new efforts to protect personal data of clipper card users. the metropolitan transportation commission will meet today to talk about reducing the amount of time it holds under your personal data. last year the bay citizen reported a clipper card travel record can be stored for as long as seven years after the account is closed. today the mtc will look at options for reducing the time to three years. 4:40 right now.

welcome back. good friday morning to you. there's a good chance santa clara could host the super bowl but now the city has to decide if it even wants to. the big issue is money. to host a super bowl a city must give financial concessions to the nfl. that means giving up a huge chunk of revenue from taxes on tickets, hotels and other venues. santa clara has until may before a formal proposal needs to be submitted. it is a finalist for the 2016 or 2017 super bowl. soon you could be getting your morning cup of joe from a well known hollywood actor. courtney reagan is live at cnbc world headquarters with your news before the bell. good morning, courtney. >> reporter: good morning to you. futures relatively flat right now. this is after stocks closed at

sunshine. it will be very cold out there. with cold air filtering into the bay area just about all day long. now look at your temperatures on saturday. 48 degrees. on sunday morning another chance just like yesterday morning for some low snow and very slight chance 20% to 30% but we could see snow levels drop to about 1,500 feet yet again. we're watching for that. what i can tell you right now is we picked up accumulation upwards of two inches in parts of the bay area yesterday above 2,500 feet. i'll show you impressive snow pictures coming up. keep that credit card handy. you might need to get the frost off the windshield this morning. >> california scrapers. 4:47 right now. the man accused of the colorado theater shootings will be in court today to face charges. james holmes will enter a plea today. some legal experts believe he will plead not guilty by reason of insanity. holmes is accused of killing 12 people and injuring 70 others in a mass shooting last july.

last week a judge determined there was enough evidence for him to stand trial. as part of the continuing effort to curb gun violence, vice president joe biden's gun task force will meet with the gaming industry later today in washington. yesterday the vice president sat down with gun owners and the national rifle association. the nra says it was disappointed with that meeting. it says the white house is less focused on keeping children safe and more focused on attacking the second amendment. meanwhile, the task force is hurrying to come up with new regulations. >> so far a surprising recurrence of suggestions that we have universal background checks and not just close the gun show loophole but total universal background checks including private sales. >> while they were meeting, another school shooting made national headlines. this time in southern california. we brought this to you yesterday at 11:00 a.m.

a teenager shot and injured two students at a high school about 40 miles from bakersfield. the nra says not only are gun sales up since the connecticut tragedy, they also gained 100,000 new members unsolicited. later today at the white house president obama will meet with afghan president hamid karzai. they'll talk about the future role of the u.s. in afghanistan. white house officials say president obama will not announce the next round of troop wi wi wi withdraw withdrawals. big weekend for the 49ers coming up. a playoff game with the green bay packers. that means a bet between the city's mayors. we'll tell you about the educational twist this time around. we're giving you a live look

the team takes on the green bay packers at candlestick. >> we now know who will be kicking. jim harbaugh says the original guy, david akers is still his guy despite finding billy cundiff last week. he missed 13 field goals this season but harbaugh says he still feels akers gives the 49ers the best chance to win it. kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m. tomorrow. going to be a good one. san francisco mayor ed lee and the mayor of green bay, wisconsin, james schmidt, are making a friendly wager on the game with an educational twist. here it is. if the 49ers win, green bay will sponsor hundreds of san francisco kids at the exploratorium museum when it opens at its new home at pier 15 in april. if 49ers lose, san francisco will sponsor a free admission day at the new children's museum of green bay. the bid includes an exchange of some local delicacies.

a woman, her boyfriend and two others were arrested earlier this week for allegedly plotting a home invasion designed to scare the woman's husband into moving out. police say the husband stabbed and killed the intruder. he does not face charges. fremont police investigating that city's first homicide of the year. last night a man turned himself into officers after claiming to have shot and killed a family member. just a few hours earlier police have found the 48-year-old victim at a home on party court not too far from briar elementary school. investigators say the shooter left the scene before police arrived. so far no word on a motive. we are following breaking news in the north bay where sheriff's deputies are investigating the overnight death of a 17-year-old boy.
