she is the youngest to be up for that award. we're going to meet her, coming up. and the royal family unveiled the first official portrait of the duchess of cambridge. we'll have you have your say, too. we'll have a complete wrap-up of the golden globes. we'll also have a rare interview with sonia sotomayor. she is the first hispanic to be on the justice. today national investigative correspondent jeff rossen is with us. hey, jeff, good morning. >> can you imagine turning olt faucet in your kitchen, in your bathroom, and the water suddenly ignites, in some cases creating a fireball right in your house. believe it or not, it can happen thanks to a chemical in some drinking water. one family outside cleveland is living this nightmare right now.

>> it's a startling sight. yes, that tap water catching fire. jason and debbie klein couldn't believe their eyes, fearing for their young children. >> oh, i was so scared. it just was a huge explosion. the entire sink up to the ceiling. >> it started just weeks ago when they noticed their water was fizzing. then when debbie lit a candle near the sink, the water lit up. >> i put my kids in the bathtub every night of this explodable water. >> it turns out there is highly flammable methane gas in their well water. methane is invisible and naturally occurring in the ground. it can seep into wells. that seepage, even worse, if the ground is disturbed. anything from earthquakes to drilling. and near the klein's house, it just so happens the natural gas company was drilling. before they started, the company

paid to test the family's water. methane levels were 9, just within safe limits. but months into the drilling, tests showed the methane levels had skyrocketed, reaching 22, more than twice the acceptable level. >> this family in ohio is not alone. there has been methane found in drinking water across the country. >> in fact, there is even a film about the issue, the anti-drilling documentary, "gas lamp." critics of drilling say laws need to be tougher to protect homeowners. >> oil and gas companies have been granted special exemptions from some of our most important environmental laws, and we need really tough enforcement, which we don't have now. >> for the klein family in ohio, the cause of their flaming water is still unclear. the gas company told nbc news they support the state investigation. and there are many natural variables that can cause the levels of methane to change.

but in the meantime, the kleins say buying a methane filtering system would cost $8,000, money they don't have. forced to drink bottled water instead. and they're still bathing using the tap. >> we don't know the consequences of sitting in gas water. we just don't have a choice. >> overnight a gas industry group told nbc news when current laws are followed, drilling is safe. officials in ohio say they are taking this case very seriously and investigate all claims, and now washington is paying attention, too. congress has asked the epa to study the potential effects of drilling on drinking water. by the way, this fire water, the methane getting into the water supply, matt, this only affects people who use well water. if you use the city tap, which i assume you do, and i use the city tap as well, it does not affect us, but it affects millions of americans in this country.

of eight, are binge drinking three times a month, consuming an average of six alcoholic beverages at a time. >> binge drinking leads to problems with your body and your brain and really self-harming behaviors that can lead to addictive behavior. >> while lamb says the drinking mirror can be a valuable tool, these women enjoying a beverage in ft. lauderdale weren't sold on it. >> i just don't take it seriously. how can it take into effect your genes, other things you do in life, how much you work out, how much you don't work out. >> it doesn't express the medical effects of alcohol use, such as diabetes, liver and heart disease. it's purely a play on vanity. >> the picture is horrible, but there's no way this would actually happen to me. >> reporter: and it can be a harsh reflection of what might be. so the drinking mirror is an app.

were going to go congratulate him and tell him how much we loved his work and a few days later when we were watching tv, they said he was one of the first bodies that was found. and so that part, talking about the people, the individuals, that's the part that still gets to me, still chokes me up. >> reporter: the cruise line has reimbursed them. they offpted to take settlement instead of suing. with it they bought a boat named mojito, for the drink they were enjoying when the concordia hit. >> i had taken my grandmother's ros aary to be blessed in rome. it was stuffed in my backpack. it's still on the ship. that's one thing i want back. >> reporter: some survivors were told they might be able to get their items back, at least what was left in their safe, but not until the ship is ready to be towed out of here. sunday the ceremony will include a moment of silence, mass, and

good morning. happy friday. it's 7:56. i'm marla tellez. more trouble with boeing 787 dreamliner. that same plane an hour away from touching down at san jose's mineta international airport. it was revealed overnight cracks appeared in the cockpit windshield of the 787 flying in japan. that plane landed safely. the newest issue comes as the faa just announced a comprehensive review of the plane dubbed the most technically advanced yet. today's order mandates a second look at the design, manufacture and assembly of the dreamliner. as we mentioned, it's a big deal for the silicon valley because the airways will land a 787 dreamliner this morning. it marks the start of the airlines direct flights to tokyo and beyond. we asked ana about the recent issues with the plane but they referred us to boeing. let's go ahead and check the forecast now with christina loren. >> good morning to you, marla. good morning to you at home. happy, happy friday. it's a cold start to the day.

this is a big week end for the national world war ii museum in new orleans. it's holding the grand opening of the new u.s. freedom pavilion. tom brokaw is there. i know this is a big deal. this is a labor of love and has been for you to grow that museum. what's new there? >> reporter: well, frankly, matt, it's really an astonishing experience to be here in this new pavilion. this began as a d day pavilion, the landing craft that were built in new orleans. it keeps growing and growing and growing. take a look at some of the aircraft that were suspended all over this boeing pavilion in new orleans. the air war was fought all over the world. you see everything from b-17s to the p-51 mustangs that was critical to america's closing success in the closing day of the war. this has a red tail. a b-24 bomber is here as well, a

b-25, the planes that flew in the pacific. this is a great tribute to the men and all the people that supported the air war at great risk to their lives. just off this pavilion is a virtual experience of going down in the "u.s.s. tang," the most lethal submarine we had in world war ii. i can't tell you what it's like to be in that submarine, see it on a mission and see what happened to it. >> tom, i know the primary goal and focus of the museum is education. do you get a sense that there is a great thirst for knowledge about the second world war among the younger people who visit that museum? >> reporter: i do, matt. my own personal experience is that the baby boomers who came along after the war, it was not part of their memory, but then all the books that have been written about that time and they realize what their parents went through, first the depression and then the war and how much we owe them. and how much was at stake. and so young people are coming here and learning the magnitude of this war. 50 million people perished in world war ii as fought on six of

we're back at 8:39. this morning on new year new you, we're looking at inspiring weight loss stories. a group of students who, through their school lost more than 750 pounds. kerry sanders has their story. good morning, kerry. >> reporter: good morning, willie. in classrooms like this across america, kids learn reading, writing, arithmetic. but rarely do they learn, eat this, not that. but one school district decided that could change. >> the heaviest i've been, i heard somebody say you can't sit there. you're too big for that seat. that was hurtful. i went home that night and cried. >> my heaviest was 830 pounds. if you're big, uh-uh usually get teased. oh, you're a fatty. it really brings you down. >> i was 275. i wouldn't want to look in the

mirror. i hid it from my mom because, you know, i wanted her to be happy. and i wanted to be happy. but it was hard to make friends. >> 257. i would be like 500, 700 pounds or something like that. >> reporter: last september, chelsea, jason, sarah and cameron, along with eight other students from independence, missouri, left their family and headed to mindstream academy, a boarding program in bluffton, south carolina, on a mission to lose weight. the trip paid for by their own school district. >> we as a school district can take advantage of an opportunity for students and their families to change the course of their life, that's what we're going to do. >> reporter: mindstream academy and parents helped foot the bill. and for the next three months, they exercised, were counseled and learned about healthy

eating. in december, they returned to missouri after losing a combined 756 pounds. an emotional homecoming. >> he has changed so much. he is so skinny. >> reporter: not only did they lose weight, but they gained confidence. >> the before picture and you see the girls, the hair was all up in ponytails, baggy clothes. and after picture, it was, look at me now. i got makeup on, hair down, hand on the hip, pride. >> that pride shared by all. >> i lost 100 pounds. my self esteem was just through the roof. >> i'm very proud of you, jason. i think it's an amazing thing. >> i lost 55 pounds. i'm smiling a lot more. i think i just have more optimism. >> extremely proud. i mean, she's always made me proud, but i'm just even prouder.

>> no one recognizes me. i grew four inches and i lost 65 pounds. >> i think as parents of these children from mind stream, that we just feel really blessed. >> when i got down to about 250 pound pounds i said, wow! she still tells me every day she's happy i'm home. >> one of the things i told her, i said, i have always told you that you're beautiful. i hope you see it now. >> i do. >> the independence, missouri, district, is going to be sending sarah, jason, cameron and chelsea back to the landmark academy next week to continue their weight loss program and increasingly across america schools are beginning to recognize if they teach kids what to eat at a young age, it likely will stick with them the rest of their lives. willie? >> great story out of

back now at 8:45 with a woman living with aids who became the face of the disease by challenging people to erase the stigma associated with it. jenna bush hager is here with the story. good morning. >> good morning. mary fisher took america by storm in 1992, faced a fearful nation with a message of compassion. >> i want your attention, not your applause. i would never have asked to be hiv positive. >> mary fisher's historic speech at the 1992 republican national convention is known as one of the greatest speeches of the 20th century. it's called "a whisper of aids" yet her words were anything but

quiet. her speech resonated with a nation still learning about the death sentence called aids. >> i am one with the lonely gay man sheltering a flickering candle from the cold wind of his family's rejection. >> reporter: a mother of two and daughter of a wealthy republican politician, working in the ford white house in 1974, this was not the typical face of aids. but when mary fisher was asked to break her silence, she stood up strongly. what was your main message? what did you want to get across? >> i didn't want my children to feel the shame. so speaking out, for me, was a lot about them. i knew there was tremendous stigma against the gay community. and my message was if it can happen to me, it can happen to you. and we need to be compassionate. >> reporter: after learning she contracted the virus from her ex-husband, who later died from the disease, she found a new mission in life. mary wrote books and gave speeches. at the same time she prepared for death. and for her young children's

future when she would be gone. >> i was organizing how it would be for them. who would be taking care of them. how would they be living. because i don't think anyone can love their children as much as a mother can. i wanted them to know how i felt. each night i rehearsed for the day when i must give you over. that is why, as i reach for the day's last kiss and hug, you always hear me say the same four words. sleep with the angels. >> reporter: but with the help of great medical advances, it turns out that memboir was not her last book. >> i can't help but think about the title, "the messenger." in some ways, is that what you see yourself as, as a messenger? >> i think, yes, in some respects, that we can all be messengers, that we all have the opportunity to make a difference in other people's lives. and when i first gave my speech in '92, i said that i didn't

want my children to think of me as a victim, but i wanted them to think of me as a messenger. >> a message that her sons, 20 years later, have never forgotten. >> she taught me that integrity is everything, that you need to stand up for what you believe in and that no voice is too small, i think, is the biggest thing. >> reporter: yet just as she was learning to live, she faced another unexpected blow last year. breast cancer. >> being diagnosed with cancer is so different than being diagnosed with hiv. people come out of the woodwork. they want to tell you their story. they want to help you. they want to give you advice. when i was diagnosed with hiv, it is so the opposite. >> reporter: so this is your happy place? >> this is my studio, place that i love. >> reporter: her cancer is now in remission and her life in sedona, arizona, is filled with art, advocacy and helping people live with hiv in africa. and a very special dance she never dreamed she would live to

experience. >> it was the most amazing moment, i think, of my life, to watch my son get married and to be alive to see this. i was just -- yeah. i was overwhelmed with joy. >> fisher really defied all odds and now is one of the millions of americans living with aids. but she did say that 20 years after her famous speech, sadly, the stigma still exists and it's what she works for every day. >> absolutely. >> to make sure that people can live without that stigma. >> she has a powerful voice and so many people are listening. it's a great piece, jenna. thank you. her new book is called "messenger." we're back in a moment. this is "today" on nbc. these sweet honey clustery things have fiber?

them. they're long but i thought "zero dark thirty" was very good. a very stark look at the ten-year hunt for osama bin laden. i know there's been a lot of controversy setting all of that aside, it's just a very riveting film, i thought. >> jason, we were surprised when ben affleck wasn't nominated for "argo." >> but it won best picture at the critic's choice award and literally gave an acceptance speech and said i want to thank the academy. he was so on point with it. i was surprised. everybody, like you said, was also surprised. i think it got a shot, though. the picture has a shot. obviously he won't win because he wasn't nominated for best director but we'll see. >> what did you think about "lincoln"? >> i didn't see it. >> i like what we're doing now. >> you asked for predictions. i only went by the incredible buzz and everyone that i respect seems to like it. i apologize. >> did you just throw things at a dart board last night? >> i did. i'm going to go out on a limb and be completely honest not

good morning to you. 9:26, i'm laura garcia-cannon. south bay family says investigators are not doing enough to find who killed their son two weeks ago. 24-year-old jackson madsen's body was found three days before christmas. police say it appears to be a hit and run but who hit him and what really happened is still a mystery. madsen's friends say he may have gotten into a fight at the spot, it's a bar in downtown campbell, which is the last place madsen was seen. there's a 911 call it came from his own cell phone a short time before his death. >> to know that he had a 911 call and it was from his cell phone, him huffing and puffing like he's running from something, that's the only thing that i can think of and it won't

all your vegetables are cooked down. you kind of tear that apart. nice, tender beef like that. >> falls off. now you're okay with using frozen corn and peas? >> there's not a lot of great stuff out there this time of year, root vegetables, stuff like this. but for a little color and ode to springtime, peas and corn. we have broken up our meat and have it in a pan like this. a roast that's leftover, chicken. it could be any kind of meat. >> that's sort of half the deal? >> right. then you take your mashed potatoes, yukon gold, incorporated butter and egg yolks in there. we're going to take that, spoon it over top, right on top of our meat picks tur. and then it goes right into an oven. i always tell people, this is something that you could really put together, cool it down. put it in the fridge and on sunday night, whenever you're

over. the u.s. troop withdrawal will occur and that is why we wanted to bring you the event live. right now there are 66,000 forces in afghanistan and so many questions about what the country will look like after the united states leaves since the war began more than 2,000 american service members have lost their lives and another 18,000 have been wounded. karzai's often been critical of the united states, but he wants forces to remain. he was at the pentagon yesterday meeting with leon panetta and met with with secretary clinton last night. u.s. officials are talking about a zero option after next year with no forces remaining behind in afghanistan. that is an area of concern for president karzai, because he would like a more robust force to help with the training of afghan forces there. kristen welker is at the white house at the east room awaiting the two leaders. kristen, what have we learned about ha they have been discussing? >> well, david, good afternoon.

the white house officials just released a statement saying that president obama and president karzai agree that the afghan security forces have exceeded x expectations now leading about 80% of the operations in afghanistan, and that is is significant, because this white house may be lean iing toward a more scaled back troop presence after 2014. for the first time, officials here saying that the president may be open to zero troop presence which critics say that could leave afghanistan vulnerable to destabilization. here is the president and president karzai. >> good afternoon, everybody. please have a seat. it is my pleasure to welcome president karzai back to the white house as well as his delegation. we last saw each other in the nato summit in my hometown of chicago a city that reflects the friendship between our peoples, including many afghan americans

as well as the karzai family. so mr. president, welcome. we meet at a critical moment. the 33,000 additional forces they ordered to>ok afghanistan e served with honor, they've completed their mission, and as promised returned home this past fall. the transition is well under way, and soon nearly 90% of afghans will live in areas where afghan forces are in the lead for their own security. this year will mark another milestone. afghan forces will take the lead for security across the entire country, and by the end of next year, 2014, the transition will be complete. afghans will have full responsibility for their security, and this war will come to a responsible end. this progress is only possible, because the incredible sacrifices of the troops and the diplomats, the forces of our

many coalition partners and the afghan people who've endured extraordinary hardship. in this war, more than 2 th,000 america's sons and daughters have given their lives. these are patriots that we honor today, tomorrow and forever. as we announced today, the next month i will present our nation's highest military declaration, the medal of honor to staff sergeant clinton romishae for his service. today, president karzai and i have reviewed the strategy. with with the devastating blows we have struck against al qaeda the core objective, the goal is within reach that al qaeda can never again launch attacks against our country.

at the same time, we pushed the taliban out of their strongholds. today, most major cities and afghans are more security and insurgents have continued to lose territory. meanwhile, afghan forces continue to grow stronger. as planned, some 352,000 afghan soldiers and police are now in training or are on duty. most missions are already being led by afghan forces. and of all the men and women in uniform in afghanistan, the vast majority are afghans who are fighting and dying for their country everyday. we still face significant challenges, but because of this progress, our transition is on track. at the nato summit last year wing a e greed with the coalition forces that afghan forces will take the lead for security in mid-2013. president karzai and the team have been here for several days, and we have shared a vision of how to move ahead and consulted

with our coalition partners, and we will continue to do so, and today, with we agreed as afghan forces take the lead, and as president karzai announces the final phase of the transition, coalition forces will move to a support role this spring. our troops will continue to fight alongside afghans when needed, but let me say it as plainly as i can. starting this spring, our troops will have a different mission. training, advising, assisting afghan forces. it will be a historic moment and another step toward full afghan sovereignty, and something that president karzai cares deeply about as do the afghan people. this sets thei] stage for the further reduction of coalition forces. we have reduced thexñ troops to roughly 66,000 troops and our pledge is to continue to bring

the troops home at a steady pace, and in the coming months i will an thouns the next phase of the drawdown and a responsible drawdown to protect the gains that our troops have made. president karzai and i have also discussed the nature of the security cooperation after 2014. our teams continue to work towards a security agreement, and as they do, they will be guided for our respect for afghan sovereignty and by the two long-term tasks which will be very specific and very narrow. first, training and assisting afghan forces and second, targeting the counter terrorism missions, targeted counter terrorism missions against al qaeda and the affiliates. our discussions will focus on how best to achieve these tasks after 2014, and it is our hope to reach an agreement this year. ultimately, security gains must be matched by political progress, so we recommitted the nations to a reconciliation process between the afghan government and the taliban. president karzai updated me on t

the afghan government's road map to peace, and we agreed today that the process should be advanced by the opening of a office to continue talks. and continued support across the region including pakistan. we welcome recent steps this ta regard and look for more tangible step, because a stable and security afghanistan is not only in the interest of the afghan people and the united states, but of the entire region. and finally, we reaffirmed the strategic partnership that we signed last year in kabul, an enduring partnership between two sovereign nations, this includes deepening tying of commerce, and education and development and opportunities for all afghans, men and women, boys and girls. this sends a clear message to afghans and to the region as afghans stand up, they will not stand alone. the united states and the world stands with them. now, let me close by saying that

this continues to be a very difficult mission. our forces continue to serve and make tremendous sacrifices everyday. the afghan people make significas everyday. afghan forces still need to grow stronger. we remain vigilant against insider attacks. we will have enduring abilities for the people and against the safe havens, and this continues to be our ilk. make no mistake the path is clear, and we are working towards it everyday. everyday afghans are stepping up for their own security, and as they do, our troops will come home, and next year this war will cocome to a responsible end. president karzai, i thank you for the commitment to the goals we share, a strong and sovereign

afghanistan where afghans find security, peace, pros pperity a dignity and in pure suit of the future, afghanistan will have a long term partner in the the united states of america. mr. president. >> thank you. thank you very much, mr. president, for the very gracious and warm welcome to me and the afghan delegation on this visit to washington and for bearing was, as i mentioned during our talks with all of the crowds that we have there. the president and i discussed today in great detail all of the relevant issues between the two countries. i was happy to see that we have made progress on some of the important issues for afghanistan

concerning afghan sovereignty. we agreed on the complete return of detention centers and detainees for afghan sovereignty, and this is going to be implemented soon after my return to afghanistan. we also discussed all aspects of transition to afghan governance and security. i'm very happy to hear from the president as we also discussed it earlier that in spring this year, the afghan forces will be fully responsible for providing security and protection to the afghan people, and that the international forces, the american forces will be no longer present in the afghan villages, and that the task will

be that of the afghan forces to provide for the afghan people in security and protection. that we also agreed on the steps that we should be taking in the peace process which is of highest priority to afghanistan. we agreed on allowing a taliban office in qatar where the taliban will engage in direct talks with the representatives of the afghan high council for peace, where we will be seeking the help of relevant regional countries, including pakistan. where we will be trying our best, together with the united states and our other allies to return peace and stability to afghanistan as soon as possible and employing all of the means

that we have within our power to do that. so the afghan people can live in security and peace and work for their prosperity and educate their children. the president and i also discussed the economic transition of afghanistan and all that sbe tail s entails ford once the bulk of the international forces withdraw from afghanistan, we hope that the dividends of that transition economically to afghanistan will be beneficial to the afghan people, and will not have adverse effects on the afghan economy and the prosperity that we have gained in the past many years. we also discussed the issue of election in afghanistan, and the importants and the s and ths se of the election of the afghan people and conducting a free and

fair election in afghanistan where our friends this the international community in particular the united states will be assisting in conducting those elections. of course where afghanistan will have the right environment for conducting elections without interference, and without undue concern in that regard for the afghan people. we also discussed in a bit of a detail and in the environment that we have all aspects of the bilateral agreement that we have between afghanistan and the united states, and i informed the president that the afghan people already in the effort that we called for the strategic partnership agreement between

afghanistan and the united states view it as a good relationship and a valued one. so by that context the bilateral agreement is one that the afghan people approve and we will conduct it in detail where both the interests of the united states and the interests of afghan will be kept in mind. we had a number of other issues also to talk about. during our conversations and perhaps many times in the conversation beginning with the conversation, of course, i thanked the president for the help that the united states has given to the afghan people for all that we have gained in the past ten years, and that those gains will be kept by any standard while we are working for peace and stability in afghanistan, including respect for the afghan constitution. i also thanked the president and

endorsed with him the sacrifices of american men and women in uniform and those of other count countries. accordingly, i also informed president obama of the sacrifices of the afghan people, and of the immense sacrifices of the afghan people in the last ten years both for the servicemen and of the afghan peop people. i am going back to afghanistan this evening to bring to the afghan people the news of afghanistan standing shoulder-to-shoulder with america as a sovereign, independent country, but in cooperation and in partnership. thank you, mr. president, for the hospitality. >> thank you, mr. president. okay. we have got two questions each

from u.s. and afghan press, and we will start with scott wilson of the washington post. >> mr. president, president karzai. mr. president, does moving up the deadline for the transition to an afghan security role in the spring mean that you will be winding down u.s. troops faster than you expected this year? and specifically as possible, how many troops do you expect to leave in afghanistan beyond 2014 for the two missions that you outlined, and would you consider leaving any troops in afghanistan beyond that date without an immunity agreement for their actions? and president karzai, you have spoken often about the threat that the u.n.'s presence poses to your nation's sovereignty, but i am wanting to know if you will be working on behalf of an immunity agreement to preserve some torss in afghanistan after the 2014 date, and how many u.s. troops you would accept after that time. thank you.

>> okay. scott, our first task has been to meet the transition plan that we have set first in lisbon and then in chicago. because of the progress that has been made by our troops, because the progress that has been made in respect to afghan forces, and their capacity to meet the need, and we are able to meet those goals and accelerate them somewhat. let me repeat. what will happen this spring is that afghans will be in the lead throughout the country, and that doesn't mean that coalition forces including the u.s. forces are no longer fighting. they will still be fight iing alongside afghan troops. it does mean though that the afghans will have taken the lead and our presence, and the nature of the work will be different.

we will be main ly an assisting and advising role, and obviously, we will have troops there and that means that our men and women will still be in harm's way, that there will still be the need for force protection, you know, the environment is still going to be very dangerous, but what we have seen is that the afghan soldiers are stepping up at great risk to themselves. that allows us then to make this transition during the spring. what that translates into precisely in terms of how this drawdown of u.s. troop proceeds is something that isn't yet fully determined. i'm going to be over the coming weeks getting recommendations from general allen and other commanders on the ground. they will be designing and shaping a responsible plan to make sure that we are not losing

the gains that have already been made, and to make afghan units when they are in theatre, and to make sure that the folks are protected even as we are drawing down, so i can't give you a precise number at this point. i will make a separate announcement once i have recommendations from the generals and our commanders in terms of what that drawdown might look like. with respect to post 2014, we've got two goals. and our main conversation today was establishing a meeting of the minds in terms of what those goals would be with a full-on presence of the troops, and that is to train and advise the afghan forces to provide their own security, and number two, to

security agreement is in mind, for the interests of both countries. we understand that the issue of immunity is of very specific importance for the united states. as was for us, the issue of sovereignty and detentions and the continued presence of international forces in afghan villages and the very conduct of the war itself. with those issues resolved, as we did today, part of it, the rest was done earlier. i can go to the afghan people, and argue for immunity for u.s. troops in afghanistan in a way that afghan sovereignty will not be compromised. in a way that afghan law will not be
