for the first time on "dateline" we saw the nursing student's killer giselle esteban answering questions from investigators and now le's family is speaking out about the startling and gripping evidence revealed in the case. >> you really want to grab her on the screen and grab her and protect her. the last minutes of her life it's hard to see. >> through skype michelle's cousin says it was just as hard to see the rest of the evidence, police showed the family everything on september 11th, 2011, the day they arrested giselle esteban. esteban spending time at michelle's school to figure out the nursing student's schedule, grabbing a lab coat and stealing a key card. >> the amount of premeditation and conscious thinking behind her murder was really shocking. >> reporter: also for the first time footage from esteban's interrogati interrogation. >> you don't like here? >> yeah, that's evident, that's

>> the le family has no desire to speak with giselle esteban because she's shown no desire or remorse for the murder not even when she was sentenced a month ago. go to nbcbayarea.com, do a search for michelle le for more. all lanes are once again open on a south bay freeway this morning after a deadly crash overnight. the crash happened on northbound 880 in san jose near gish road. the chp says somehow a car flipped over, ending up on its roof in the right-hand lane in the freeway around 1:30 this morning. the driver inside that car did not survive the crash. the gish road off-ramp was closed for about three hours as the chp investigated the crash. oakland police are under pressure to track down four different killers after four people were murdered in the span of hours yesterday afternoon. the shootings happened in different neighborhoods in the city from west oakland to deep

east oakland, all happened within about six hours starting yesterday afternoon. this is the scene from the fourth shooting which happened about 8:15 last night on hillside street not far from bishop o'dowd high school. the man pronounced dead at the scene. as of now there are no arrests in any of the killings. it is oakland's sixth homicide of the new year, all of which happened this week. a showdown over gun control laws is taking center stage right here in the bay area this morning. a gun show in daly city is now the focus of people on both sides of that issue. up to 10,000 people are expected to crowd into the crossroads of the west gun show at the cow palace this weekend and they can expect to be greeted by plenty of protesters. the show includes more than 150 vendors selling everything from guns and ammunition to knives and jewelry. crossroads officials say attend absence at their shows across the country has roughly doubled in the last few weeks over concern that congress and the president are about to approve stricter gun laws.

the gun show's owner bob templeton was one of those discussing the issue with vice president joe biden earlier this week. >> we'd like to see mental health issues addressed, we feel we need more community help, resources, those are the things we think need to be addressed before we go down the slippery slope of gun control. >> we talked with sean richards who started brothers against guns in san francisco bay view after his brother was shot and killed in 1995. that group is just one of many expected to be out in force protesting the show later this morning. in the north bay investigators are trying to figure out how a body ended up in a petaluma dumpster. they know who the person is. employees made the startling discovery sifting through trash yesterday afternoon. the body was reportedly dumped

there by a garbage truck. investigators say there were no signs of visible trauma, but they are calling the death suspicious. a public memorial will be held later this morning for the petaluma teenager whose body was found in a tahoe snowbank. the cause of alyssa byrnes' death is still unknown. she got lost in lake tahoe after attending a music festival. this morning's memorial is at 10:00 at the casa grande high school gym. her family is asking anyone who attends to wear pink in her honor. it was a dramatic courtroom confession from a convicted killer, a vallejo man admitted to killing his own mother. at his arrangement dennis stansworth sobbed, yelling from a wheelchair, "i plead guilty to everything i did. this is the third time." police say stansworth first called them wednesday, confessed

to killing his 89-year-old mother. her body was found outside his home in vallejo. just as troubling this is not stansworth's first serious crime. in 1966 he confessed to the rape and murder of two 15-year-old girls in suol. he was convicted of those crimes and sentenced to death, but that sentence was later reduced and he was paroled in 1990. a judge in san mateo county handed down a lengthy sentence to a man accused of stealing a wallet. andrew yonke was sentenced to 11 years in prison this week. san mateo county district attorney says he went to the victim's home in redwood city, asked if he could retrieve a baseball from his backyard. he said when the victim wasn't looking, yonke swiped his wallet. it belonged to the former district attorney. the current da insists that the fact the victim was a former da had nothing to do with the length of the prison term, however he says the punishment other folks are saying the punishment does not fit the crime. >> i think it's a little bit

excessive, too much, 11 years. >> that person is just as important to us as a victim as every other citizen in san mateo county. all the victims matter and all the robbers need to be in state prison. >> the district attorney says yonke served time before robbery and that allowed the judge to double his sentence to those 11 years. still ahead on "today in the bay," 49er fever is sweeping through the bay area, here is the city decked out in just the right colors. we are just hours away from playoff matchup with the green bay packers at candlestick. we'll show you why the niners say they are more confident this year than last.

be careful when you hit the roads this morning. temperatures are starting to rise but chp has reported some black ice around the bay. it is a huge day for the 49er faithful and playoff hype in the city is in full force. coit tower lit up in 49ers red and gold along with san francisco city hall. that's how we do it here. we are ten hours away from kickoff against the green bay packers. the packers and their coaching staff arrived yesterday just as the 49ers were wrapping up their last practice before the divisional playoff game. the players say they are right where they want to be. >> prior to last year, i think this year we understand where we want to do and what we have to do to get there. the focus level is way up and physically everybody's on it. >> the san francisco police department says it is beefing up security for tonight's game. the department says some officers will be in uniform, some will be in street clothes, and yet others will be wearing

one of san francisco's famous and unique brown twins passed away this week leaving many to wonder how her 85-year-old twin sister will go on. vivian brown died in her sleep wednesday night after a bat well alzheimer's. you might have seen the twins around new year's square and knob hill where they lived, considered unofficial ambassa r ambassadors for san francisco, the two appeared in many ads as well. in person they were quick with a simultaneous wave or smile and dressed to perfection in matching outfits and always more than happy to pose for pictures. >> the city is made up of icons. the city is made up of historical spots. the brown twins represented a part of that. >> mayor ed lee says the city is heartbroken by the loss. vivian brown was 85 years old. federal health leaders are declaring this year's flu outbreak is an epidemic. it's widespread in 46 states but maryland is suffering the worst,

more than 15,000 people have visited emergency rooms and doctor's offices and manufacturers say supplies of flu vaccine are running low. the outbreak so far has killed 20 people under the age of 18 across the country and health leaders are urging anyone who has not gotten the flu shot to get one. this year its effectiveness is estimated to be about 62%. if your weekend plans involve flying into or out of sfo this weekend, doublecheck your flight for delays. one of the main runways was closed since last night as crews worked to install lighting and other safety improvements. the runway closure is part of a federally mandated improvement project. the runway is set to reopen monday morning at 8:00. ever wanted to try crosssky skiing or snowshoeing? today may just be your chance, if we can get to the snow. today is winter trails day, more than 100 resorts across the country are offering free cross-country skiing and

snowshoeing to see any of the resorts in the sierra, logon to snowlink tot com and click on the "winter trails" box to find out. from extremely cold to extremely hot. amazing video out of russia as a volcano continues to erupt in the far eastern part of the country. you can see lava flowing down the sides of the mayin crater. the volucano has sent gas and ah almost 2 1/2 miles into the sky. it began erupting in late november after lying dormant for nearly four decades. in australia massive wildfires continue to burn as a heat wave is gripping large parts of the country. here is a look at some of the images taken from a canadian astronaut from the international space station. wide band of smoke almost covers the entire country. the astronaut says the flames can be seen from space. officials say about 90 fires are burning, about 220,000 acres of

land is now charred. the temperature in the area where the fires are burning could reach 120 degrees today. also in australia, stunning images of a dust storm just off the coast. the photos taken earlier by a tugboat worker shortly before sunset. the dust storm appeared quickly and the conditions in the water changed from calm to very rough with seven feet swells in a span of just two minutes. he says as the storm approached, visibility dropped and a lightning show began as the light faded. that is certainly something to see. rob mayeda has a look at our weekend forecast and it's curious to hear what the temperature will be at itth the 'sticks. >> speaking of candlestick point i don't know if it gets prettier than that, from the lens of our photojournalist josh keppel who is bundled up out there, quite

cold. san francisco one of the more mild spots. it has dropped to 39 degrees but we're down to 30 in livermore, conco concord, napa, toward santa rosa and brief rain that fell overnight in the east bay and south bay, look out for patchy ice or frost out there this morning north of san jose toward sunol and livermore. generally during the day if a breeze out of the north, it will continue to dry out the atmosphere and set us up for an even colder night tonight into tomorrow morning, so patchy frost this morning, partly cloudy skies this afternoon, as the system drops down the coast and brings showers offshore we think away from the bay area and tonight as skies clear and even colder nights in store, this time tomorrow morning probably will see some upper 20s. right now the radar is quite dry. you can see there is a little batch of clouds out here to the west, that will swing towards the coast this afternoon, that's probably going to toss some clouds your way but you'll see the showers likely staying offshore and this is the pattern that is bringing in the cold air, cold, dry, dense air tends

to settle in for a while and that's what we'll see as we wrap up the weekend. hour by hour not seeing any showers. we'll see a few clouds going by. let's jump ahead to tonight's temperatures and look at that by tomorrow morning in the upper 20s and some of the colder inland valleys. today highs near 50, probably about it in terms of the warm temperatures today. low 50s near pleasanton, upper 40s. east bay 52 in santa rosa, about 49 right there in san francisco for game time, 5:00 in candlestick park close to 49 degrees, and for the rest of th weekend, chilly mornings will continue and here's the interesting part, this is normally the wettest time of year, but instead the seven-day forecast keeps high pressure in control, strengthening somewhat by wednesday so the mornings will stay cold but the daytime temperature also climb some towards the middle part of the week. so the dry, very chilly weather continues especially for the next two mornings. >> thank you very much, rob. much more ahead on "today in

over the past two decades, about 5,000 boy scouts on the peninsula have risen to eagle scout, the highest achievement in scouting, and each one of them has george maher to thank for it, even in a small way. it is george's own eagle scout award that is the heart of today's "bay area proud." here's "today in the bay's" garvin thomas. >> reporter: spend enough time around enough boy scouts, like they do at the pacific skyline council headquarters in foster city and they say you can always spot the eagle. it's not the pin on the chest or the patch on the sleeve, though. it's something special on the inside.

it's something anyone who has ever known george maher says is inside him. it's why when mark manchester started work here last year and met george he didn't even ask george if he were an eagle scout. >> i didn't ask if, i said george what year did you get your eagle scout? >> i said it should have been march 10th, 1944. >> reporter: should have, because george never officially was an eagle scout. he had all the merit badges, sure, but in the middle of his board review hearing, the very last step needed before becoming an eagle scout, george's mother interrupted the meeting. >> she told me my father was not doing well, and she was heading to the hospital, and i didn't say anything, i just grabbed my stuff and i said we're going. >> reporter: george's father died later that day, and within a matter of weeks, george was in the south pacific fighting the

japanese. >> a violate typhoon -- >> reporter: and the weather. it was during one typhoon in particular george was tossed about the deck so violently he lost his wallet with his life card, the only written proof of his accomplishments. he returned to the states, got married, raised a family and did write one letter to the boy scouts asking about his award. >> and the letter that i wrote was returned to me, addressee unknown, that's it. i'm out of luck. >> reporter: and that was that. until that day last year when george told mark his story. this time, mark sent some letters off himself. these were returned with a very different message. >> it was the letter saying that i am an eagle scout and they gave me the date of march 10th, 1944, and there wasn't a dry eye in the place. >> reporter: george had always told himself the eagle scout

conditioning again, big dip in the jet stream, driving in this cooler and drier air today. even if the sunshine, we'll have a tough time warming up, showers staying offshore to the west today. hour by hour, lunch time in the 40s and today upper 40s to low 50s and if you thought this morning was cold, and it is cold, tomorrow looks like a better chance at 20s in the forecast so we'll explain what's going on, why things are getting colder and how dry the seven-day forecast comes in a few minutes. >> i used one of the reward cards to scrape the windshield. maybe i'll stop and get an actual scraper today. >> sounds like a plan. tomorrow marks one year since the "costa concordia" slammed into the rocks off the coast of italy, killing dozens of people. regularives of the 32 victims are expected to attend a memorial event on the island. siren also mark the exact time when the cruiseliner carrying 4,200 people on board ran aground, suffering a 230-foot-long gash in its hull. the ship remains there, resting

on its side. the wreckage is expected to be removed in september. mexican officials say they uncovered a drug smuggling tunnel under construction along the arizona border. the sutunnel was found across fm arizona city of the same name. the 183-foot tunnel was only yards from actually crossing the border. it is the latest of dozens of smuggling tunnels found in nagales over the past few years. no arrests were made but weapons and bullets were found inside. a union city man escaped near death after being rescues from the bottom of a remote mineshaft in arizona. the rescue happened at the meteor crater mineshaft yesterday morning about 35 miles east of flagstaff. parmender singh scaled a seven-foot fence and jumped into the 100-foot shaft. conditions for rescuers were

brutal, pitch black, and high winds. singh was suffering from hypothermia when they found him. >> sometimes if you have somebody you know they're okay, you drop supplies down to him like we did in this case. maybe it's safer for everybody if you wait until daylight. we didn't believe he would survive that long. >> a volunteer at the tourist area saw singh jump in and reported it to authorities. it took dozens of people hours to pull him to safety. he's in fair condition this morning, no word on whether he will be charged with trespassing or why he jumped in the first place. the murder of michelle le is now in the national spotlight. for the first time on "dateline" we saw the nursing student's convicted killer, giselle esteban answering questions from investigators, and now le's family is speaking out about the startling and gripping evidence revealed in the case. we spoke with le's cousin via skype last night and she says it was hard to see the evidence of hayward police, showed the family everything on september 7th, 2011, the same day they

arrested giselle esteban. among the footage was esteban spending time at michelle le's school in oakland trying to figure out le's class schedule. investigators say esteban disguised herself by wearing a lab coat and using a stolen i.d. >> the amount of premeditation and conscious thinking behind her murt was really shocking. >> also for the first time we saw footage from esteban's interrogation which she admits she didn't like le. when asked if she wanted something bad to happen to her one-time friend, esteban says, "no, i just want her to stay away from my child." the le family says that they have not spoken with giselle esteban. they say they really have no desire because she has not shown any remorse or guilt from the murder, not even a month ago when she was sentenced. our own janelle wang spoke one on one with "dateline"'s keith morrison about the

weekend gun show. thousands from around the state are expected to attend as the obama administration talks about new gun control laws after the deadly newtown school shooting. >> our attendance has roughly doubled, in some cases more than doubled as people, as guns are in the news and people are concerned about their second amendment rights going forward. >> we don't see any action or change. >> reporter: richard is concerned about the gun shows contributing to local violence. >> you have those individuals that go out and buy guns for cheap at the gun shows and bring them to the community, and sell them for more. >> reporter: richard has been fighting for a ban on gun shows at the state-run cow palace for years. >> meanwhile the gun show keeps coming back. >> reporter: state senator mark leno is in the fight. >> after five years of effort we got the bill to arnold schwarzenegger's desk and he vetoed it. >> reporter: leno and richard aren't giving up. with a different governor in office and a new national view on gun violence, leno is willing

to try again. >> i think the time is right. >> reporter: richard is hoping years of effort will pay off and change the reality on the street. >> it's so easy to get a gun, it's ridiculous. charlie the dog will live to see another day. his sentence has been commuted, the american terrier was ordered to be euthanized after attacking a police horse in san francisco last year but thanks to an agreement between charlie's own and the city the dog's life will be spared. charlie will live with a rescue organization, more than 100,000 people signed an online petition asking the city to spare the dog's life. in the south bay, two homes in san jose housed big secrets until now, acting on a tip investigators searched homes on trestlewood drive, inside the marijuana enforcement team ho d

ambulance, one of its kind, was chosen to be part of the president's inauguration parade later this month. nbc's audrey washington shows us the unique ride and the story behind it. >> reporter: to say george king iii is proud of his 1916 model "t" ford world war i ambulance -- >> yeah! >> reporter: -- is an understatement. >> this is the most accurate and the most interesting project that i've ever been involved in. >> reporter: the ambulance is only one of 63 vehicles selected to be part of the procession in president barack obama's inauguration parade on january 21st. >> president obama will be sworn in at the capitol and go down to the white house, in the parade procession and we'll follow he and michelle. >> reporter: king says it took years and years of research, right down to the kind of wood used. >> we constructed the body out

temperatures throughout the north bay and east bay valleys, we're down in 30 in livermore and concord. san francisco is the warm spot and that's 39 degrees this morning, 35 in san jose, not much wind right now. during the afternoon you might notice a breeze out of the north which is going to continue to pump in that canadian air conditioning as we like to say, that cold, dry air which brought the snow levels down late in the week and giving us these mornings of frost and some icy conditions in a few spots. this morning, patchy frost maybe through 8:00 or 9:00, partly cloudy skies this afternoon, clearing again tonight and tomorrow morning looks like we could see 20s back on the map, as things turn even more chilly for tomorrow morning. right now the radar is dry, though we have one system here that's going to spill some clouds away for the afternoon, it looks like the showers will stay offshore but that will toss a few clouds our way. this is the pattern giving us the cold, kind of a ski jump, the ramping effect of the cold air dropping down across the west coast, so this is a cold

. looking live at candlestick park where it's quiet now, but it will be a roar later on today. of course, the san francisco 49ers are in the playoffs today, and just appropriately the city was decked out in red and gold. you can see coit tower before, now looking live at san francisco city hall. we are about ten hours away from kickoff against the green bay packers, the packers and their coaching staff arrived in the bay area yesterday. the 49ers were wrapping up their own last practice before the divisional playoffs game. the players say they are exactly where they want to be. >> prior to last year, i think this year we understand where we want to go and what we have to do to get there so the focus level has been way up and physically everybody's on it.

103-97. and there are reports this morning that lance armstrong will admit to using performance-enhancing drugs. "usa today" says armstrong is expected to confess to doping in an interview with oprah winfrey, scheduled to tape on monday. that interview is expected to air on thursday, on oprah's network own. armstrong who has strongly denied the doping charges was stripped of his seven tour de france titles and banned from competitive cycling a few months ago after usada, the u.s. an die doping agency released a detailed report. still ahead on "today in the bay," we have a little sweetheart who is looking for a new home.
