>> it will be nicer today looking for warmer weather. temperatures climbing from a frigid start in the 20s and 30s into the mid 60s today. san francisco i'm forecasting about 64 degrees for you. san jose 66 degrees today. so if you want to get outdoors, today is a great day to do so. however, i have to tell you, it's a spare the air day. keep that in mind. you may not have heard about it but maverick is called for this weekend. let's check your drive. good morning, mike. >> camera turned toward the mission over crossing here as it passes over the off-ramp there. that's where we had a head-on collision reported. a crash between two cars. one was going the wrong way on that onramp. it cleared over the last 15 minutes and so now all lanes have reopened. no serious injuries reported. we'll show you the maps. we did that in the roadway for a good period of time. no problem for 880 or 680.

smooth thrive through pleasanton. no concern eastbound. i'll track that and give you a wider view to make sure. back to you. the sports world buzzing about notre dame star monta te'o and the inspirational story about the death of his girlfriend is now a hoax. the question this morning is did the star linebacker make this up or was he the victim of a very cruel joke. notre dame officials say he had an online relationship with a woman reportedly a stanford student. her death back on december 11th was believeded to inspire te'o to the top of the college football world. but they say that the woman never existed. >> this was a very elaborate, very sophisticated hoax perpetrated for reasons we can't fully understand but had a certain cruelty at its core.

>> so far te'o has released this statement saying he was the victim of what was apparently someone's sick joke and constant lies. investigators are now looking into questioning te'o friend who lives in southern california and may be connected to this hoax. notre dame officials are standing behind te'o. parents in los gatos are telling school leaders they want changes to keep their kids safe and secure on campus. more than 100 parents came out for a meeting last night. a month after the sandy hook tragedy, school leaders say prevention is the top priority. police say they will explore different ways of protecting and securing schools. some suggestions include putting up gates and fences. surveillance cameras and entry locks at key points at all schools. parents are confident the changes will come. >> i feel very confident. >> why? >> well, i think just the fact that they're having this meeting

shows that they recognize how important it is and how important it is to the parents and for the parents to be involved. >> on february 4th, the los gatos town council will hold a special meeting about whether it can change town code to restrict future firearm sales. coming up, bob redell has a new proposal in san jose for anyone that owns an assault rifle. president obama launching a campaign style tour today backing his latest gun control proposals. he's publishing an op-ed in connecticut newspapers pitching the $500 million plan. the president says he wants universal background checks, more research on mental health, and a thousand new school police officers and counselors. he's also asking congress to enact a ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines. even in newtown, some are skeptical. >> please don't tell me in my

home i can't choose to have an ak-47, bushmaster, or whatever i think is necessary to defend myself, my family and my home. >> senate democratic leader harry reid says they will likely take up gun control early this year. san jose police have released a new sketch of a suspect wanted for an attempted abduction. take a look at the photo we have here. investigators say this man tried to snatch a 2-year-old girl right out of her mother's arm. the mom was able to wrestle her free and run back inside with her. inside her home she called police. the abduction attempt happened tuesday afternoon at a home in east san jose. the suspect is described as latino, stands 5'6", 20 to 30 years old and has a thin build. another attempted abduction story. this time in milpitas where police say this man tried to kidnap a 3-year-old boy inside the great mall. it happened on january 6th.

the boy's mother says the man took her son by the hand and started walking away with him. she quickly caught up and took her son back. this man is described as asian, about 55 years old, 5'6", with a potbelly. new this morning, japan now following the faa's decision to ground all boeing 787 dreamliners. the planes will be grounded until the faa completes all safety checks. an inspector in japan says a battery malfunction forced a landing yesterday. the lithium batteries can leak corrosive fluid and start fires which could be the main issue in many of those dreamliners problems. a dream liliner used for nonsto flights between san jose and japan will use a different airplane to handle those flights starting tomorrow. nudist in san francisco are challenging the city's ban on public nudity today.

activists filed a federal lawsuit claiming the ban violates their right to freedom of expression. city attorneys say the court has upheld nudity bans in other cities in the bay area. the hearing on this issue will be held in federal court today. a heads-up right now. it's been announced today is another spare the air day and that means of course you cannot burn wood or synthetic logs indoors or outside. for the record, this marks the second spare the air day in a row. the fifth so far this year. >> i got to say, yesterday afternoon it was so nice to feel the warmth of the sunshine. it was great. thank you, christina loren. >> i like being right. last thing people want is another really cold afternoon and this morning it is frigid. just about as cold as it was yesterday. we're sparing the air and our air quality is suffering even more so this morning in the north bay, central bay and east bay where we have unhealthy levels of ground pollution. you want to try to limit your

into saturday and sunday in some of your beach cities. lots to talk about in the weather report. 4:39. always something to talk about in the traffic department with mike. >> good morning. there is right now in front of our cameras here in oakland. look at this. we have your northbound lanes, a couple of them blocked heading north past the coliseum approaching high street. flashing lights is a crew. we have a whole middle section lit up just a few minutes ago as crews were continuing their road work. they moved and now those flashing lights clearing a construction zone heading north so you will regain a couple lanes there. i marked it on the map. you will find slowing as folks past the crews and changes occur over the next ten minutes through the area. southbound side has a crew going on there between 980 and 16th and that will cause slowing as you do lose a couple lanes there as well. westbound 80 down the east shore freeway, no delays and a smooth drive across the upper deck into the city and smooth flow elsewhere. we'll send it back to you with a live look at the north bay which is lonely which is good. back to you. >> it should be at 4:40. thanks so much.

giants world series trophies are heading to the big apple. just a few hours from now a flight leaving sfo will carry the 2010 and 2012 trophies to new york city. the giants originally played there up until 1957. the event is part of the giants world series tour for its fans. >> very cool. start in new york but they now belong to san francisco. 4:40. it's on. the world's best big wave surfers are on their way to half moon bay. >> hang loose everybody. incoming swells should deliver 30 to 40-foot waves this weekend. this is the first time in two years the surf competition will take place. a total of 24 surfers from all around the world will hit that water starting at 8:00 a.m. on sunday. should be sunshine to go with that. some of them will be riding surfboards designed by mavericks founder jeff clark.

4:45. welcome back. yelp is launching a new service allowing users to see health department scores. users can see the date and kind of inspections and a list of violations. not something you ever want to see. some restaurant owners are concerned they will be misrepresented in the inspections. >> the problem may have been that you had weathering on a seal in your refrigerator. never causing any sort of hazard but something that should be replaced but you'll get dinged for that. >> the system allows city workers to upload the health inspection scores directly to yelp's data base. san francisco where yelp is based is the first city to take part. the next rollout for the pilot program is set for new york in a few weeks and then philadelphia. we could find out today if the bay area's newest casino gets to open the big penthouse

gaming floor. san jose police chief is stepping down tomorrow and will make a decision about the eighth floor before leaving house. the penthouse is designed to offer high gaming. the chief is concerned over the ability of the casino to monitor activity on the top floor. intel will release its quarterly earnings report after the bell. for details on that, we turn things over to seema mody at cnbc world headquarters. good morning. >> hi there, marla. let's look at the markets. futures are lower this morning after a mixed session on wednesday. dow snapping a five-day winning streak with all losses stocked up to boeing amid safety issues with the 787 dreamliner jets. economic data out today on unemployment filings and new home construction and building permits. plus, earnings from big banks like bank of america and citigroup. watch out for that.

in terms of how we ended yesterday, dow falling 23 points in yesterday's trade and nasdaq edging up by six. satellite regulators are issuing new rules to protect homeowners from unexpected fees and poor services by the companies that collect monthly mortgages payments. they will require mortgage services to give clear monthly statements, warn borrowers before hiking interest rates and actively help them avoid foreclosure. under current rules people can lose their homes to foreclosure while trying to negotiate lower payments. that's the latest. back over to you. >> we appreciate it. thank you. let's check back in with christina loren to find out another good day on tap. good news. >> good news. you want to put thought into your wardrobe today. really want to think about it. >> how many layers is always the question. >> you want to do multiple layers and by the way i think i speak on behalf of all of the ladies out there, jon kelley dresses just right every single day. 4:48.

i like to be representative of a big group like that. i want to tell you about something happening this weekend. you can pull out your swim trunks if you so wish. we don't want you to go into the water. i have to say that much right now. we'll have sneaker waves and dangerous out there. this is what's happening. we have this monster storm way out in the eastern pacific. 1,500 miles away kicking up major surf. all of the ingredients have to be just right and that's the case. we're not going to have a lot of wind this weekend. it's the storm that's going to cause that very high surf and we're talking about 30-foot waves potentially as we get into sunday. that's why mavericks has been called. they don't want you to go to the beach and watch the surfing competition. it will be televised. that's the news i have to bring you today. saturday the northwest waves will develop. sunday the swell comes in. 20 to 35-foot waves every 20 to 25 seconds. that's very dangerous for swimmers and boaters. you want to keep that in mind even down in santa cruz it will be dangerous. if you want to hit santa cruz

and walk around on the sand, it will be beautiful. just try to stay away from the beach if you can as far away from the ocean -- i would say 30 to 40 feet away at least. we'll see pretty strong waves and they can catch you off guard. spare the air today. air quality certainly suffering. you can see the haze in the atmosphere out there. very thick. 35 degrees in san jose to start. 30 in gilroy. by noon as you break for lunch, your peeling off the first layer. we'll be close to 60 in places like san jose. 57 at noon in palo alto. 59 degrees at lunchtime in livermore. look at your highs today. upper 60s in some cities. 66 in san jose. 66 in santa cruz. and the next three days we just keep on climbing. we'll peak on sunday hitting that sweet stride at 67 degrees. some of your cities, isolated beaches will be in the mid 70s. we'll talk about that forecast coming up. 4:50 on the nose.

back to you. happening now, algerian officials say 20 hostages have been freed this morning by islamic militants. the facility was stormed before dawn and captured more than 40 workers. half have been freed. two people were killed during the attack including a british national. they say they took action after french troops launched an offensive against al qaeda linked rebels in mali. defense section leon panetta calls it an act of terror. emotions will run high this morning. the site of the mass shooting back in july. owners of the complex are reopening the theater with a community event. some victims' families are outraged after receiving an invitation written with a quote special evening of remembrance. a boycott is being planned over what some say is plain old

incensensitivity on behalf of t complex owners. disgraced cycling legend lance armstrong finally coming clean on allegations of using performance enhancing drugs. armstrong all set to speak out during a taped interview he had with oprah winfrey. this one airs tonight and tomorrow night on winfrey's own network. armstrong admits using the drugs for years. the cyclist denied all along he ever used. last year he was stripped of his seven tour de france titles by the u.s. anti-doping agency. new this morning we hear from leaders of fremont's hospital after it cut hundreds of jobs. in a statement released to nbc bay area, the hospital says it was hit hard by the economy. it says it eliminated unfilled positions and offered voluntary retirements and resignations

i'm jon kelley. >> i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> we get you started now with news out of oakland. police there looking for a suspect wanted for a kidnapping attempt from a b.a.r.t. station. investigators say back on december 17th that suspect tried to abduct a 25-year-old woman who was walking near that b.a.r.t. station. she was able to eventually fight him off and ultimately escape. investigators say the suspect is an african-american man in his early 20s, stands 5'8", clean shaven with a medium complexion. he also has a thin build with brown hair styled in dreadlocks as you can see by the sketch. he was last seen driving off in a black sedan with tinted windows. the man accused of killing a man near livermore golf course is in jail in oregon awaiting extradition. he was arrested earlier this week. police say he shot and killed kenneth ogden on december 29th of last year. ogden's body was found
