forward to. temperatures right now in the 20s and 30s. 28 degrees again in santa rosa. just about as cold as it was yesterday. we'll hit the 70s in the south bay cities. great looking forecast shaping up. let's look at your drive with mike. >> light traffic flow here for 101 at 680 and being friday we do hope that's the case all morning. we'll track this because we'll have slowdowns and things are moving nicely through the south bay and slowdowns down to 60. the only incidents i want to update you on are here. the road crews blocking north 280 to south 85 have started to move out of the roadway to start the weekend early as most of us hope to do. their workday ends before 5:00. we'll send it back to you as we check the rest of traffic. the san jose mother who lied about the attempted abduction of her 2-year-old daughter may be charged later today for filing a false police report. san jose investigators say they

discovered the lie after re-interviewing the woman. her story was not consistent. a number of people are upset about it. police first and foremost who spent money on the investigation and then neighbors who for 48 hours thought a child predator was on the loose. >> i feel so angry right now because everybody thought it's real and then everybody was so scared. >> the police will discuss this case with the santa clara county district attorney's office who will decide whether charges should be filed. after more than 27 years on the job, san jose police chief stepping down later on today. chris moore announcing early last year he would retire january 18th. as one of his final acts as chief, moore denying san jose's casino matrix the opportunity to open the high stakes gaming room on the 8th floor. larry esquivel will take over as interim police chief until the

city can find a replacement. esquivel is a 27-year veteran of the san jose police force and he says he's not interested in taking that job full time. some people in the east bay in pleasanton believe their neighborhood is being targeted by burglars. one woman said a man knocked on her door earlier this week and tried to kick it down. it happened after 11:00 in the morning. her mother-in-law screamed and the man took off. other neighbors say they have been hounded by aggressive door to door salesmen lately. some are afraid to answer the door at all anymore. >> knowing that somebody is that brazen to get through the door or want to get through the door is just gut wrenching for me. i don't even want to answer the door. >> police say since the homes are close to the 680 freeway, they're a convenient target for burglars looking for a quick getaway. if someone suspicious comes knocking at your home, it's best to let them know that you're home but do not open the door.

the sundance film festival is under way and features a film about the infamous b.a.r.t. shooting on new year's day 2009. they follow oscar grant in days leading up to the deadly shooting. it premieres starting tomorrow night. last-minute preparations are under way for president obama's inauguration. the national mall is being transformed into america's stage. this is where president obama will take the oath of office for monday's public ceremony. the presidential viewing stand is up and authorities are securing the parade routes. more than 800,000 are expected to attend and the secret service is promising better crowd management this time around. the last time there were about 2 million people there. the president is busy writing his speech. >> yellow pads filled with writing of late. >> i don't think he should turn

this into a partisan speech. he helps himself when he holds the high ground. >> here's history for you. the 20th amendment moves the date of the inauguration from what used to be in march to noon on the 20th day of january. that's why president obama and vice president joe biden will take their oaths privately on sunday. sunday the 20th. they'll take their public oaths on monday. a handful of lucky students will attend the inauguration. students from the youth video corps at the media center in palo alto getting tickets from a congresswoman. the teens are being rewarded for producing videos about their community. now that they will get a chance to hit the road for an historic working trip. >> right now we know that we'll be interviewing elected officials and working on maybe trying to get into the white house. we'll be at the ceremonies. >> those teens will also be blogging for the media center and for southwest airlines which

pays for their airfare and they will meet a student who won tickets from a congressman in a facebook contest. it's another spare the air day today. this means you cannot burn wood indoors or even outside. this is the third consecutive spare the air day and sixth one of 2013. new details this morning regarding a health scare for giants star pablo sandovol. the world series mvp checked into a hospital. his brother tweeted sandovol was checked in with abdominal pain and he's been diagnosed with colon colitis. allegedly he'll be released soon and we wish him well. a busy weekend for bay area

lithium ion battery. officials in japan are helping in the investigation of the plane. the dreamliner made an emergency landing earlier this week after the pilot reported smelling smoke. a dreamliner flight from san jose to japan scheduled to take place 11:45 this morning. that flight along with dreamliner flights across the country and around the world have been canceled until further notice. >> bad pr. >> brutal. 4:40. the jets scrambled after a reported hijacker aboard a flight bound for seattle. we'll have the latest on that investigation next. a series of controversial apps suddenly pulled from google play. the gifts for the couple who has everything. one automaker now offering a wedding registry with just one big item on it.

change.org says a series of apps that allowed users to alter photos to see what they would look like asian, native american or another ethnicity. that app has disappeared. some called the apps racist and insulting. the make me asian app changes the shape of a person's eye, puts a rice patty on them and a mustache on them. change.org submitted a petition with more than 10,000 signatures asking google to take the apps down. facebook could receive an award for best company to work for in 2013. it marks the second time it received that honor. that's high praise. employees at facebook applaud all of the good vibrations there. the company's laid back culture, free food, transportation, and day care. the award is based on employee provided feedback which is then

sent nunanimously through the survey. a less than glowing report from intel is causing markets to open later today and it looks like the dodge dart is making a comeback. for that and the rest of the news before the bell, we send things over to seema mody live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning. >> good morning to you. mixed look at futures right now. this is coming in after markets overseas specifically in japan rallied overnight. the nikkei moving higher after remarks on the yen earlier this week were misinterpreted. intel reported disappointed earnings last night. stocks did rise on thursday on the back of better than expected data on unemployment and the housing market. today we get a report on consumer sentiment and earnings from general electric and morgan stanley. in terms of how we ended yesterday, dow rising 84 points. nasdaq adding 18. here's an interesting story.

talk about mavericks for a minute. as you know, big surfing competition through this weekend and temperatures are going to be a little bit on the chilly side at the beginning of the day. look at that. 47 degrees at 8:00 a.m. as we head throughout the afternoon 1:00 p.m., 69 degrees which is unseasonably warm for half moon bay. it will be beautiful. a high surf advisory in place for good reason. sneaker waves. stay out of the water. 65 degrees on monday when we meet back here. looking good across the board. then thursday into friday of next week, starting to get more clouds. temperatures drop off. showers move in saturday and sunday. back to you. i got to find my mike. >> good luck on that. thank you very much. new this morning, u.s. officials say some of the americans being held hostage at a natural gas plant deep in the sierra desert are still unaccounted for.

at least six people now confirmed dead. some of the hostages did manage to escape including some of those americans. u.s. officials say the situation right now still very fluid. so far no signs that the militants are backing down. it is 4:49. also new this morning, the fbi has released a passenger connected to a reported hijack threat. the fighter jets were scrambled after the fbi received a tip that a passenger onboard a flight from hawaii was planning to hijack it. the plane was escorted to seattle where the passenger was detained. agents interviewed the passengers for two hours but do not anticipate he'll be arrested. some passengers on the flight say they didn't realize anything was going on. >> only thing i saw was when the police came on the airplane and asked the lady next to him to get up and they took him outside. >> there's no word on who made

the original call to the fbi. a lot of people talking about lance armstrong's interview with oprah winfrey. the cyclist does oadmit he used performance enhancing drugs, he believes he was never cheating. >> i had this exercise that i'm a drug cheat. i'm a cheat. i'm a cheater. i went and looked up the definition of cheat. the definition of cheat is to gain an advantage on a rival or foe that they don't have. i didn't view it that way. i viewed it as a level playing field. >> as a grown man you don't need to look up the definition of cheating. this morning on the "today" show matt lauer will talk exclusively with one of armstrong's former teammates and the "today" show will have an exclusive interview with the livestrong foundation.

new this morning, the white house announcing a cool honor announcing who will dance with president obama at the inaugural ball. a medical technician was deployed to afghanistan and currently serves in washington. she's going to have a blast on that. three other listed men and women will also attend the ball to dance with the first lady. all of them served in iraq or afghanistan. the inauguration comes a new four-year lease on the white house for the obama family. the housing website zillow looking at how much the home would cost if it was listed on the market. the results, $295 million. that's up more than 7% since the obamas moved in back in 2009. a little upgrade.

map throughout the entire south bay and you see a smooth flow of traffic. construction blocking 280 from highway 85 cleared from the southbound side. we do have one new incident south 280 approaching saratoga area. we have one crash reported. it sounds like it's clear from the roadway. i'll track that heading toward the 17 interchange. north bay shows a smooth flow as well. we do have one car fire reported northbound 101 at old redwood highway. no one injured. we're tracking that. back to you. >> thank you very much. it's 4:56 right now. we now know the cause of an escalator mishap at a new jersey train station. the video shot earlier this month just complete chaos here for travelers when the escalator suddenly reverses direction. port authority officials are right now blaming the mechanical breakdown on saltwater. the station was submerged in other 12 feet of water brought in by superstorm sandy. four people were hurt in that accident. the escalator was fixed and

way underneath on this friday, january 18th. this is "today in the bay." it is 5:00. good morning one and all. thank you for joining us. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm marla tellez. laura garcia-cannon is off today. this morning we know more about the role a woman in custody may have played in the death of a monte sereno millionaire. raven dixon seen here tipped off two of the other suspects in this case helping them orchestrate a robbery. two of the suspects are members of west oakland gangs known for organizing if robberies in oakland and in fremont. according to contra costa times, dixon gave the man information on ravi kumra's mansion and what's inside. kumra was found dead in his home last nove
