your doorstep. 4:31 with that rain coming in. you can imagine probably going to be a rough drive. let's check on that with mike. >> at some point it will be. right now not much of a drive period. look at the golden gate bridge lit up in orange lights. a smooth flow. road crews block lanes on the north side of the bridge. look at the map. you see speed sensors not a problem. off the bay bridge, a nice smooth flow. advanced stuff with life and biology and so traffic around the center continues. this has gone from bad to worse in los gatos. what started out as a peaceful and healthy debate about gun control turned into serious threats and the owner of a south bay gun store now being targeted literally. the story. >> reporter: an emotional debate drew hundreds of people to the town hall monday night. the discussion about templar sports now takes an ugly turn. the gun shop owner found a death threat at his home on tuesday night. >> the death threat identified robert as the owner of a gun store in los gatos. >> reporter: san jose police are investigating and he notified los gatos police because the town council is scheduled to continue the discussion about guns at a special meeting monday. >> i suggested that they delay monday's meeting. that would give the chief an opportunity and los gatos police department an opportunity to take whatever security measures that they want to. >> reporter: last month inside the vice mayor asked him to identify his two business partners but he refused citing safety concerns. >> we have two other owners. it's an officer on the los gatos police department and business

mess in the los gatos community. >> who are those two for the record? >> can i cover to my counsel before we answer that question? >> reporter: the death threat validates the decision to try to prevent his partners but it will not scare him away from los gatos. >> this does not deter robert. robert is a -- he's not just a businessman. he's also a civil rights advocate. >> reporter: jean elle, nbc bay area news. a parolee is on the loose after a child escape from a san jose police van. officers arrested and handcuffed anthony sanchez yesterday and put him in an unmarked police vehicle. an officer was doing paperwork when sanchez slipped his handcuffs from the back to the front of his body and jumped into that driver's seat and took off. neighbors there can't believe sanchez was able to escape. >> i was shocked.

who can do that? a big guy, how can he get out of -- we don't know what to think. it's scary. >> police are now looking for sanchez. a 32-year-old man from san jose. he was arrested for some probation violations and warrants. the 5'8" and he weighs 275 pounds. more details about the mysterious death of a local teenager. federal agents are asking how a 13-year-old girl ended up dead in a fairfield park. the body was found on friday. this morning we're learning fbi and department of justice have joined the investigation. yesterday afternoon fairfield police say their case is moving forward but they're not ready to share what they have uncovered. the girl's family has also released a statement thanking the community for their support during a very painful period. the man who might be responsible for one of the bay area's most notorious crimes is dead but sfpd is haunted by this

case saying the investigation is still very much alive. the family of missing child kevin collins is reacting to a major development in this highly publicized cold case. terry mcsweeney has details. >> reporter: this is a person of interest in the disappearance of kevin collins. a man san francisco police knew mostly as wayne jackson but he had at least four aliases and that's what threw police off his trail. >> based on jackson's description, his residence on masonic avenue, his ownership of a large black dog, and his criminal history, we are investigating jackson as a person of interest. >> reporter: jackson fit the description of the last person seen talking to collins at masonic and oak streets in san francisco. jackson lived on masonic. >> it's hard to look at it and not think that this is it. this was very likely that this

is what happened. >> reporter: kevin's brother found out last night that when kevin vanished, officers knew of his 1981 conviction in connection with kidnapping and molestation of a 7-year-old boy in san francisco. in february of '84, police interviewed jackson and they searched his house. >> that is my brother, mike, and myself here. gary and kevin. >> reporter: in 1984, police did not know about jackson's arrest for molesting two boys in canada in 1973 because he went under another name after he jumped bail he fled to the united states. police dug up the basement in jackson's former masonic street home last month and found bones but probably animal bones. police say they know where jackson is now. he's buried under the name of dan who died in san francisco in 2008. >> it's bittersweet to think about it because it's more information.

possibly answers the question of what happened to kevin. what does that bring? that brings the emotions of what happened to kevin. >> reporter: terry mcsweeney, nbc bay area news. one of the 49ers long known playe players mourning the loss of two family members. the picture was taken last week in new orleans. they came together to watch their nephew. after the game, they were killed by a suspected drunk driver. their car was struck while parked on the side of the freeway. the 26-year-old driver was arrested for dui and vehicular homicide. she was not hurt. in the bay area on super bowl sunday, the chp reported 50 arrests during the maximum enforcement period that started at noon on sunday. there were two alcohol related crashes that resulted in life threatening injuries.

in menlo park a church is out thousands of dollars and someone leaving a door unlocked may to blame. bethany lutheran church reporting in late january that checks totalling more than $20,000 were stolen from the church's main office. san mateo county sheriff's deputies say there are no signs of forced entry at the church. so far no suspects identified and none of those checks have turned up. 4:38 right now. let's check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. how are we looking for today? >> we're looking good. good morning to you, jon and laura. good morning to you at home. always looking better on a thursday. so close to that weekend now. you know what? it's been a very dry spell. we need the rain. it's on the way. we'll have to wait a couple hours for it. good morning in livermore. 38 degrees. 40 in san jose. comfortable conditions later. it will be chilly but as warm as yesterday. this is what we're waiting on. a cold front right now draped across the northern most portion of the state that will move

south throughout this afternoon. we'll time this out for you right at your doorstep. we stop the clock on foughtuutue at 8:00 a.m. future cast taking its time with rain going down to san jose. by midday broadcast you'll need your umbrella in the south bay. things will change even more so as we get into your weekend. i'll take you through that forecast coming up in just a few minutes. want to make sure you're ready for everything. a lot happening around town as we get into the upcoming weekend. so close now. let's check on that drive. >> let's look out here to oakland 880 where things aren't busy. smooth flow for the nimitz. we'll take that northbound with those taillights north past high street there's a construction zone both directions basically between high street and the embarcadero exit downtown. both directions lose a couple lanes and a little slowing in the area but slow for the cone zone.

no other incidents through that stretch. a smooth drive through the area through hayward, south 880. we see slowing with speeds dipping down toward 60 which is unusual. nothing going on there. we'll track that because the castro valley y and 238 can be trouble spots as well as if anything happens early on the commute. tri-valley commute, dublin interchange smooth flow west 580. on the peninsula, you're at the limit as well. palo alto, 101, past the shopping center, that's where all of the activity is. lights at the shopping center and a few of them -- nice precision driving lined across 101 northbound with those headlights. back to you. coming up on "today in the bay," a bolt on the tracks may be the cause of a cable car crash this morning but investigators still have one very important question to answer. here's a question. would you like to walk from oakland to san francisco? we have new details of plans being unveiled for the new span of that bay bridge. >> pretty cool. stopping alzheimer's before

it's early. >> it's a really cool look. we're limbering up this morning. that is from oakland looking toward san francisco. a couple of different ways to get across the bay. you have a look at a unique one. >> we do. it's 4:44. here's chance to be part of history on that bay bridge. sometime in late august or early september, the bridge will be open for the very first time to public foot traffic. this means people will actually get to walk, run and bike across the bridge after construction on that new eastern span is complete. the bridge will shut down august 28th and open soon after for the grand reopening. they'll have a bunch of festivities with that. the exact date is going to be announced closer to the completion of that construction. >> very cool. maybe you want to take your electric car across it. they seem to be all the rage. one american car maker banking on diesel making a comeback. for more on that and a look at how markets are doing this morning, we turn to bertha coombs live at cnbc world

headquarters. >> we have futures this morning a little bit higher. yesterday stocks really just ended near the flat line. latest round of earnings not terribly inspiring to investors. this morning we will get weekly unemployment data at 8:30 eastern. we'll get productivity and labor costs and consumer credit. the dow did manage to eke into positive territory at the end of the day to close at 13,987. up seven points. the nasdaq was down about three to 3168. gm is taking the wraps off a diesel version of the chevy cruz. it's expected to get about 42 miles per gallon. it has a 15 gallon tank which means it could have more than 600 miles of driving range before you would have to fill up again. that would be a key selling point. the car comes at a time when there's little inventicentive t

bringing in some pretty significant rainfall especially to areas in sonoma county and to marin. that will be the case as we head through 8:00 a.m. right in the heart of your morning drive the showers start to move to the south. you can see right now a nice, dry bay area. that's good news for you early risers out the door early. want to tell you what will happen through the next couple days. low pressure system crosses to our north. it will fall apart as it moves over the bay area. i think the biggest component of this system is the very cold air that trails behind that front. cold blast settles in. we don't get out of the cold until potentially wednesday of next week. want to let everybody know out there, gentlemen, men, boys, guys, one week before valentine's day arrives. don't you forget it. 54 degrees in livermore. 53 in fremont. 56 in los gatos. lots happening around here this weekend. it will be dry but a cold. temperatures still hovering in the upper 50s all of the way through sunday. monday into tuesday, we'll warm you up just a little bit.

before we hit those 70s again, another storm system rolls in on wednesday and that's going to drop your temperatures and bring more rain as we head through thursday and friday of next week. back to you, jon and laura. >> thanks so much. 4:48. president obama's nominee to head the cia will be in the hot seat later this morning. that's when john brennan will go before a senate panel confirmation hearing. brennan is being tasked to defend the obama administration's use of unmanned drones to kill terror suspects. he helped run the drone program. >> we have a high confidence that they are being done for the right reasons in the right way. >> what qualifies as an imminent threat that would warn taking a life without any kind of proceeding or any kind of review by anyone else? >> brennan is expected to face questioning on his role in the controversial terrorist interrogations used by the bush administration. we're happy to report things are back to normal this morning for a san francisco tourist attraction after grinding to a

scary halt yesterday. a spokesperson from san francisco municipal transportation agency says a bolt stuck right in the tracks appears to have caused a cable car accident that injured a total of ten people. the cable car was filled with tourists and locals and it came to an abrupt stop. investigators now looking into where exactly that bolt may have come from and how it actually got stuck into the tracks into the first place. doctors have a dire prediction about alzheimer's. the number of americans living with the disease will triple in the next 40 years. it emphasizes the need to find a treatment for the mind robbing disease. doctors fear a cure or better treatment is still far off. researchers are focusing efforts on early diagnosis. >> very, very important research there. 4:50 right now. still ahead this morning, the medical mistake that's costing a major trauma center in the south

before the sun makes its arrival. it will be a cooler day for your start. christina loren says grab an umbrella heading out the door. we'll have rain showers coming along. it's 4:53. speaking of the south bay, the state has fined a south bay hospital for failing to treat a patient who was in cardiac arrest. the department of public health says the patient went untreated for nine minutes at the santa clara medical center in san jose. he was revived but suffered a severe brain injury and died. when the family eventually took him off life support. the medical center was fined $100,000. usf received two fines. both instances patients had to undergo a second surgery to remove a foreign object. the state also fined st. mary's medical center. once for leaving a foreign object in a patient and once for failing to properly distribute medicine to a patient. old school practices making new technology possible at san

jose state. the university school of journalism and mass communications receiving a donation close to $9 million from what's literally an old school source. they own a printing company there where the school's daily newspaper was published for 20 years. there have been computers and social media and school administrators say their gift means students in san jose state will be among the best prepared in the entire nation. what a grant that is. >> what a way to give back. 4:54 right now. let's check the morning commute. i saw a lot of construction on my way. >> there is some construction out there but look at this. someone pulled over to illustrate where the gore point is on the roadways. two roadways come together. see the triangle where that one is stopped. it looks like a stalled vehicle. we'll talk about that. hopefully everyone is safely in that car. that's good news.

we begin with breaking news. three officers shot this morning in southern california. we have a live look with our chopper over the city of corona right now down in southern california. they are looking for the suspect, a former police officer himself. police right now looking for christopher jordan dorner. this man right here. police think he is very upset because he was recently fired from the l.a. police force. dorner has been on the run since yesterday and police say he shot and killed a college basketball coach and her fiance. police say they believe one of the victims was the daughter of an l.a. police captain. this morning officers say dorner was involved in three separate shootouts with police. one in corona and two in riverside. each of those instances an officer was hit. one of them suffered a graze wound. the two others suffered severe injuries. right now their conditions are not known but we'll of course keep you posted as more information
