out to be an undercover agent. the agent met with him seven times before the fbi says he attempted to set off the bomb early yesterday morning. we have the new details. >> reporter: on the phone former fbi counterintelligence says the fbi's ability to gain his trust likely saved lives. >> without the fbi assistance it would have gone off and killed somebody. >> reporter: a suicidal man and former marine who had been around guns since he was young. we obtained this picture of ak-47 rifle and three clips each loaded with 40 rounds. they found him parked in front of his home in 2011 of his father reported his son was hearing voices. he had bought the weapons legally in arizona but they're illegal in california. a judge sentenced him to six

years but he served just one. attorney cameron bowman represented him at the time. >> ultimately, they felt -- outside experts felt he was bipolar, possibly schizophrenic. >> reporter: which calls into question, would llaneza have been able to pull this off without the fbi's help? he constructed the bomb with theunder cover agent. they constructed the trigger twice with a cell phone purchased by llaneza but he finished putting together the car bomb under the supervision of the undercover agent. >> we have really strict guidelines, restriction about all undercover operations. >> reporter: our legal analyst stephen clark says it's not so clear cut. >> all of the key issues in the case were likely recorded. certainly wire taps involved.

because of that issue of entrapment, you don't want to have the government, in effect, committing the crime. >> that was stephanie trong reporting. he is due in court wednesday. the criminal complaint claims he wanted a civil war. search fbi complaint to read the entire affidavit online. a man is behind bars in connection with the murder of a 13-year-old girl whose naked body was found in a fairfield park. police say this man, 32-year-old anthony jones killed her. he was arrested yesterday morning after a five-day investigation by the fbi and an extensive search of the barber shop where he worked and also a search of his home in fairfield. police say they started watching jones when the teenager, janelle conway allen, disappeared last week but they won't say why he

was a suspect. the solana county sheriff's office say he's charged with kidnap, rape, murder and lewd axe wi acts with a child. hundreds gathered last night to remember janelle where she was found. she was a foster child who went missing from her home last thursday. fighting back tears, her biological father says his daughter was full of life and loved sports. their last visit was about a year ago. >> i love her with all my heart. i stay with her and the kids and crystal for about a week. and we played. >> fun-loving little girl that liked to sing, dance, write poetry. that's how i remember her, play, running the streets on her bicycle. >> funeral services are expected to be held next week. as for her suspected killer, jones is due in court on wednesday. we do have new details this

morning on the murder of a controversial south bay millionaire. documents reveal how ravi kumar was killed at his estate. he died on his kitchen floor from asphyxiation. police affidavit say the suspects used packaging tape to blindfold and gag kumra. the suspects auld tied his hands and feet behind his back. three men and a woman have been charged in connections with the case. they say he frequently hired prostitutes, including this woman, who is in custody. they believe she turned over information about his mansion to the other suspects who are gang members. these gangs are known to carry out home invasions targeting asian and indian families. according to the affidavit, dna evidence led them to the suspects. a parolee who managed to escape from san jose police on wednesday is back in custody. officers found anthony sanchez sleeping inside a stolen truck

around 11:30 thursday night. police say sanchez escaped from officers after being arrested on hillsdale avenue on wednesday. he was able to slip his handcuffs to the front of his body, then took off in a police van. he is now facing auto theft, burglary and drug charges. also in sanyo say, police are searching for three suspects who broke into a home in south san jose yesterday. the woman who lives in the home is safe thanks in large part to a brave neighbor who answered her call for help. this happened on north creek drive, not far from 101 and 85. "today in the bay" has the story. >> it sounded like there were people in my house, throwing things around. >> reporter: that prompted carol mcbride to ask her neighbor john fuller to find out what was happening inside. >> i heard some nows upstairs. >> reporter: the noise came from three burglars pro broke into

mcbride's home. >> these these guys come running down the stairs. they got quiet for a second, come running down the stairs and surprised me. >> reporter: the burglars were looking for a way out but fuller blocked the front door. >> they stopped and then come running toward me again. i hit the first guy. and then the second guy, he pulled a gun out and swung it at me. and i ducked my head and he swung past and clipped my ear and knocked my hat off. >> reporter: the three cooking ran out of carol's home. fuller went after them but they escaped. >> i've had my house broken into. it annoys me. here are these punk kids. i'm telling you, you are not going anywhere. >> reporter: carol is just glad her neighbor was there to help. >> you never know how nice people really are until you get into trouble and how your neighbors come to your side to comfort you or aid you. >> fuller says he's a former boxer and wasn't going to back down. >> i just like to be a good

authorities are still focusing on the town of big bear in the san bernardino mountains following the discovery of his burned out truck thursday morning. officials say they hope a break in the snow today will help them in their search. meanwhile, police and u.s. marshals removed approximately ten bags of evidence from donor's mother's home in lalpala yesterday. necessity say his mother and sister were cooperative. still ahead on "today in the bay," giants fanfest still a few hours away. fans giving you a live look at the fans already wlining up for a chance to meet their favorite players but there is one giants star they may not recognize. that story coming up. bundled up in blankets, rooting for.

but of more interest is how he spent the off-season. >> i went to different trainers, going to a set of guys i was working with in bellevue. >> his head is in the right place. obviously, he's done a lot of hard work for himself and put himself in a good position for a good spring training. >> in 2011 i was the heaviest i've ever been and then i dropped off and lost 30 pounds, i felt like i lost strength and stamina with that. trying to put that back. >> reporter: he tried to squash any rumors about bad feelings between him and buster posey. >> nothing going on, just a matter of who was catching and who bochy put in there. >> what he did out of the bull pen in the playoffs with his credentials to do that and never heard one grumble about it. you're excited. you're excited to play with people like that. >> reporter: the two-time cy young award winner admits his confidence was shaken last season, but feels more focused than ever heading into 2013. >> didn't want to go through last year again, you know.

england and it's not over yet. nbc's jay gray has the latest. >> reporter: the weather storm pounding the northeast since friday continued to strengthen overnight into a fierce and relentless blizzard. making matters worse, hurricane-force winds, gusts up to 75 miles an hour creating blinding conditions. the projected snowfall totals are staggering. before it's over, up to 3 feet of snow is expected in parts of new england, including boston. the storm has literally stopped most of new england in its tracks. more than 1800 cancellations at new york area airports, 4700 flights canceled nationwide. the governor of massachusetts ordered all cars off the roadways starting at 4:00. a move that made sense after this 19-car pileup in maine scattered cars across the road and into ditches. >> please, please, exercise caution and use common sense. >> reporter: this historic storm is the result of two converging systems colliding over the northeast.

>> this is horrible. >> reporter: horrible even for veteran snowplow operators. >> actually, we had a very mild winter. very mild. and i guess mother nature's making up for last year. >> reporter: mother nature delivering a powerful punch to a region still recovering from super storm sandy, which struck just over three months ago. jay gray, nbc news, boston. well, that storm impacting flights all over the country, including right here in the bay area. if you're flying out of sfo today or any other bay air airport, it's best to call ahead. let's turn things over to the expert in this, rob. >> we'll take a look at what's happening in the northeast.

that massive nor'easter is way from the coast. downtown, new york city, starting to clear out. you can see the snow wrapping around the east side of long island, boston and hartford, the snow will continue for the next few hours. you can see that lowoff shore in the northeast, convection to the south. those are the storms that helped fire up thundersnow at times and now the system is moving out to nova scotia. if things improve for air travel, the big snowstorm will move away from the coast. 34 degrees in san jose this morning. 32 in concord. 44 in san francisco. not much wind now but as high pressure builds in from the west, you'll notice winds picking up slightly into the north heading into this afternoon. chilly start, 30s and 40s to get the morning started. mid-50s, close to 60 this afternoon. we will see warmer days ahead. the mornings are still going to be chilly with patchy frost. and the seven-day forecast looks unfortunately quite dry. here's the reason why. you get high pressure acting like a wall.

sinking air and sinking motion in the atmosphere. you won't get storms or clouds to form out of that. you can see how the jet stream is arcing off to the north, diving down east of the sierra. it will stay that way for the next few days. not many clouds out there this morning and we won't see much for this afternoon. maybe patches of low clouds for the coastline. our temperatures today, even in the sunshine, we got a chilly start, it's going to take time to warm up. upper 50s closer to san jose. maybe 60 around pleasanton. san francisco, 57 degrees today. 60 around oakland. 62 in santa rosa. the mornings will still stay chilly but each day as we head toward the middle of the week, numbers come up. it will be climbing into the mid-60s and maybe by, let's say, thursday or friday, morgan hill or trivalley could get close to 70. and it's kind of a guilty pleasure because the weather's gorgeous. this is the sometime of year where we need to built the snowpack and get some rainfall. not there in the next seven days but good for your outdoor plans

we were trying to figure out a really elegant way to make a centerpiece for valentine's day. what we did here is we made a luminary with tissue paper and glue. take some tissue paper, in this case white and red tissue paper, and we cut it into shapes. we made white squares and red hearts here. and you take some glue. you can water it down a little bit. you stick some glue onto the glass or jar and you stick it on and then you put some glue on top and you're done. even if the glue gets a little gloppy, even if the tissue paper bunches up a little, it ends up looking beautiful. >> i'm certainly no martha stewart. doesn't my mother know that. even i could do this. >> it's really easy. >> easy for parents and kids. >> the next one is super simple as well. so, this you're using household items. i love it when we can use household items to use things. celery and toilet paper rolls.

warming up. upper 50s and near 60. that's the best we'll do today but seven-day forecast does bring maybe close to 70-degree temperatures for parts of the bay area. the full forecast coming up in a few minutes from now. we're following a developing story out of south america where a strong 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck near columbia earlier this morning. as of now, colombian officials are not reporting any major damage. also a tsunami warning has not been issued. a 7.2 magnitude quake struck colombia earlier this morning. we'll stay on that to see if any damage comes out of that. here in the bay area a san jose man could spend the rest of his life in prison for his involvement in a homegrown terror plot foiled by the fbi. authorities say agents arrested 28-year-old matthew llanza yesterday near a bank of america branch in oakland after he tried to detonate what he believed to be a car bomb.

that bomb, though, never went off. turns out llaenza co-conspirator was an undercover agent. he met with him several times. according to the fbi's own affidavit it was the feds who prepared the chemical to simulate an explosive mixture and who constructed the trirg device with a cell phone purchased by llaneza. but he finished putting together the car bomb under the supervision of the agents. >> it's not entrapment. we have really strict guideline restrictions about all undercover operations. >> all of the key issues in the case were likely recorded. certainly there were wiretaps involved. because of that issue of entrapment. you don't want to have the government, in effect, committing the crime. >> the fbi says llaneza expressed support for the taliban. he hoped the bombing would be blamed on antigovernment

a little haze in the air. don't be fooled. looks like a gorgeous day. it looks pretty but it's very cold. we'll get a full look at the forecast with rob. it's going to be close, very close. all eyes and telescopes will be pointed toward space next friday when an asteroid weighing 130,000 metric tons will just narrowly miss hitting earth. don't let that spoil the cosmic experience. "today in the bay" jshows us while it will be remarkable in so many ways. >> reporter: you may be wondering exactly what a grocery store has to do with a large asteroid hurling through space. this exciting piece of video is all to lend perspective. >> this is the biggest. you know, i've heard it described as the size of a safeway. >> reporter: this asteroid name da-14 is expected to pass close enough to the earth's surface to grab the attention of

astronomers like ben burris. >> they know with certainty it will come very close. pass within 17,200 miles of earth's surface and then will cruise safely back into space. >> reporter: nasa says the asteroid is the largest to fly close to earth since the agency starltd keeping track. while experts say it won't hit the earth, 130,000 metric tons of flying mass still makes people a little nervous. >> an impact by an object of the size that's going to pass next week happens about every 1200 years. >> reporter: but to understand the true impact of asteroids striking earth, you have to travel back 66 million years. that's the time frame researchers at uc-berkeley have newly pinpointed as the demise of the dinosaur. >> the dinosaurs, we think, are wiped out around 66.043 million years ago. and that's to within about 320,000 years. >> reporter: in a paper

welcome back. good morning from at&t park as the giants' season kind of officially or unofficially gets under way there with fanfest happening a little later on this morning. a big crowd there, bundled up. the sunshine and at least no umbrellas. it's chilly, though. cold temperatures which we'll show you in a moment. first, let's talk to you about why the bay area is still being impacted by the big nor'easter there on the northeast coast. you can see the snow still wrapping into parts of long island and boston. if it was fanfest for red sox it wouldn't be good outside of fenway park. another 6 inches coming down today. the stm slowly moving away from the east coast. hopefully the boston airport will reopen late today and some of the airports around long island should see things improving later on by this evening. there are the temperature & tard

after the giants world series victory, several players enjoyed the spotlight at candlestick park and the niners were part of the giants' parade. when the niners went to the super bowl, the giants organization was right along with them. the night before the super bowl we caught up with giants' president and ceo who was among those in new orleans on the red carpet at the nfl honors awards show. >> you know what, there's some bond, some kindred spirit, hash tag, united, which they have similar cultures. coaches that are intense, experienced and, you know, players that find a way to do it. so, it's very cool. the city of champions sort of aura. >> reporter: the tie that binds these two teams certainly includes the great success both have had in recent years, playing in their respective sports championship games. >> it's similar in that it's unlikely.
