grievance in his 11,000 word manifesto. >> i will make a rigorous inspection to either validate or refute his claims. we'll make that inspection public. >> he said he wasn't trying to apiece dorner. last week he was asked about the demand that the lapd clear his name. >> it is not going to happen. >> nbc news obtained surveillance from a law enforcement source. the morning after his first alleged killings and appears to show him moving an ammunition magazine, lapd uniform shirt, helmet. an auto parts store found hem and took them to the police station across the top. >> the magazine and the belt was hidden under boxes. >> one of the first victims was honored before cal state fullerton's women's basketball

it's really a winter wonderland. the cleanup goes on. while this storm system didn't reach all the hype that it might have as far as snowfall right here in boston. it still did dump 21.8 inches of snow, good enough for number five on the record books. this is going to be one that people will be talking about for years. >> it's day two without power for hundreds of thousands across the northeast. >> we're working pretty hard. we're working 16-hour shifts. in this weather, that's tough. >> with temperatures in the single digits overnight repairs can't come fast enough. >> i would like for it to happen now. i understand it's going to take some time. >> for others, it's all about digging, digging, and more digging. the northeast still buried under three feet of snow in this spots. >> it's horrible, absolutely horrible. >> truthfully i have not seen

this much snowfall? years. >> it fell so intense, connecticut police say they were receiving 1600 calls per hour. storm surges causing flooding in massachusetts. among the deaths, an 11-year-old boy in boston succumbed to carbon monoxide while his father put him in a car to stay warm. >> so far it's been great. we have power. plenty of nachos and pizza. >> a flurry of pet pictures and videos about size, severity and absurdity of it all. and, lester, we've got another winter storm coming in here in the next 24 hours. this time it's going to bring an icy mix of rain, freezing rain and sleet which is going to cause some problems. there's already a lot of heavy snow on roofs throughout the region.

added to that, more moisture could mean for disasters of roof collapse and big problems. >> bill karins with the complete forecast. more on the next storm in line. this storm could have a big impact on your travel plans. michelle franzen is at laguardia airport here in new york. good morning. >> good morning, lester. it looks like for the first time since this storm hit air travel is getting back to normal at laguardia ask several other airports shut down during this storm. only a couple of camations on it of laguardia this morning. that's good news for travelers. it's been a tough wait and tough ride for travelers frozen in time. the monster storm literally stopped vehicles in their tracks. >> on the 495, all over the place. >> along the long island expressway and ramps, a trail of scattered vehicles. some remain stuck and abandoned in drifts.

>> how do i get out of this mess? >> dozens of drivers had to be rescued after spending part or all night in bone-chilling temperatures. in connecticut and rhode island, roads are finally open this morning after crews plowed the 30 plus inches of snowfall. >> we had no snow for multiple years. everybody forgot how to drive in it. >> public transportation put on hold until tomorrow in boston. >> ideally, we'll be ready by monday morning commute. >> in hartford, crews cleared snow from the tracks. amtrak has limited service between new york and boston. meanwhile, it could take days before air travel gets back to normal. airlines in the northeast canceled 5,000 flights this past week. the bulk, over 3200 canceled on friday. and another 2,000 canceled on saturday. connecticut's bradley airport remains closed.

boston's logan reopened last night. at new york's laguardia, flights slowly resumed on saturday. strapped passengers waited it out as airlines tried to make up for a backlog of grounded flights. >> if we get stuck we're going to go to a hotel and spend the night in new york and go have fun i guess. >> late word that bradley international airport in connecticut is open. that's good news. travel was a little bit slower. they still have to make up those flights. but they're hoping they will get back to normal by tomorrow. >> sounds like they've been making good progress. michelle franzen, thanks. a couple of the top stories from jenna wolf. >> hi, everyone. police in new orleans are searching for three people in connection with a shooting in the middle of a packed bourbon street. police posted this video showing the chaotic moments before and

after the shooting that injured four people on saturday night as police cleared the scene, thousands of partiers continued their marredy gray festivities. if you consider someone throwing shoes at you not a warm welcome. he laughed at the first. you try to catch the second shoe. the man who threw the shoe said he was sending messages from saddam hussein and the iraqi people. george bush had shoes also thrown at him back in 2008. boeing is hoping to get its dreamliner fleet back in service as soon as possible. it's checking into all plane's batteries after several reported problems. the test flight was in the air on saturday. get this, the flight lasted a few hours and the crew described it as uneventful.

the search for life on mars continues with a big step forward for nasa. these pictures sent back after the curiosity rover drove through the rock on the red planet. chris brown says he was trying to get away from the paparazzi when he crashed his car. brown told police he was being chased on saturday when he ran his porsche into a wall. good thing nothing controversial ever happens to chris brown. people ring in the year of the snake. lester holt can't belive it. china is helping to usher in the lunar new year. lester did not celebrate. people flooded the streets for the different festivals and all the wonderful food. finally, in college basketball, overtime is fun. double o.t. is exciting. triple o.t. is pretty amazing.

to attend the funeral of pendleton, the 15-year-old shot and killed a week after performing in the inauguration parade that. visit comes as the debate over gun control heats up in washington. moderator of "meet the press". david, good morning. >> good morning. gun control really stayed at the forefront here of the president in minnesota of course early kwrr this week, pushing for congress to act. there was some talk about the first lady attending that funeral yesterday. where does congress stand at this point in terms of getting something done when it comes to gun control? >> the sweet spot right now, erica, is universal backgrounds checks. you have a bipartisan group getting traction on this. special interests are against it. this is still a much more potential area of success than trying to deal with an assault weapons ban or magazine ban. that's how democrats are looking at it. as i talk to democratic leaders on the hill, there's recognition that a lot of their more

conservative members in red states, it's going to be a tough vote to vote on an assault weapons ban this year. so that may be really influencing why there is such an influence on background check. >> we have a state of the union on tuesday. what are we going to hear from the president? >> i think a lot about the economy. the key part of his legacy is to make the economy work better for more americans. those out of work or still struggling we don't have robust economic growth. part of it is uncertainty that surround new regulations and laws and health care. so the president needs to focus on this. it's what he will do in the state of the union. he is giving it at a time when he is at the peak of his political power. i think this is an opportunity for him but a limited window. so it will be interesting to hear how vast that agenda is as he speaks to lawmakers on tuesday. >> david, thank you.

>> we're in the 30s out there. the air is really quite dry, so you may not find the frost outside, but it is plenty cold. sunny skies heading into the afternoon. temperatures by lunchtime, recovering pretty well, in the upper 50s for most of our inland valleys. by noon today, topping out in low 60s for the north bay. also close to 60 in san jose. the trend not changing too much, except late tonight, tomorrow morning, winds picking up in the hills. for the second half of the week, upper 60s, near 70. >> i didn't see any rain in that seven-day. >> it's very dry. new this morning, san francisco police are searching for a gunman after a deadly shooting overnight just after 2:00 this morning. police say when officers arrived, they found a man suffering a gunshot wound. he died at the scene. as of now, there is no motive known for the killing.

police are trying to figure out what caused a deadly crash between a bicyclist and cement truck across from the at&t park. the woman's bike became entangled underneath the truck. they were going the same direction on king street when they collided. how it happened -- it happened just as thousands of people were gathering across the street at the ballpark for giants fanfest yesterday afternoon. a police officer who was there for fanfest responded immediately, giving the victim cpr. >> the driver realized something happened. he is cooperating with police. it isn't known if alcohol or drugs is playing a factor at this point. it is under investigation. and he is cooperating with police. >> the woman later died at the hospital. police say she is a san francisco resident in her mid-40s. this morning, an alert neighbor is being credited with helping to save the lives of a family whose house went up in flames in san pablo. they said a grill left

unattended near the garage caught fire. the flames quickly spread to the house. a neighbor took this video with his iphone. the neighbor was the one who first smelled the smoke coming from the garage and warned the homeowner. >> i started knocking on the door right away on the neighbor's, saying hello, hello. finally somebody came out. i said, your house is on fire. he said, oh, my god. he started coming out. he get the hose and start throwing water. >> the homeowner tried to fight back the flames with a garden hose as he waited for firefighters to arrive. no one was hurt. and fire officials estimate the damage to be about $90,000. coming up at 7:00 on "today in the bay," a new lead, surveillance video shows what police believe is a former lapd officer in action the day after starting his deadly rampage. we'll have the latest on the investigation and the search for christopher dorner coming up at 7:00. fers

now to a controversy about a movie critics comments on melissa mccarthy and what society says about overweight people. >> reporter: melissa mccarthy, an emmy-award-winning actress for the sitcom mike and molly and an award nominee for the 2011 movie "bridesmaids." the co her talents are on display in the movie "identity thief" having a strong opening. when the veteran critic rex read panned the movie, he zeroed in on her physical appearance, called her tractor size, female hippo and missed her career as a stud any in being obese. >> it is completely below the belt. her weight has nothing to do with the quality of the film and rex reed should be a shamed of this review. >> he said the movie is dreadful

but the weight issue is the sole reason it exists. they criticize her. melissa mccarthy has some of the best timing around and all you can think about is the body type. we both know if she was a man, you wouldn't think of calling her fat. her representatives wouldn't comment. last year, she told good house keeping, sometimes i wish i were just magically a size 6 and i never had to give it a single thought. but i'm weirdly healthy. so i don't beat myself up about it. >> i didn't know this was going to be this long. >> reporter: reed's review came the same week that new jersey governor, chris christie went on "david letterman" to confront the issue of his weight head-on. >> i'm basically the healthiest fat guy you have ever seen. >> reporter: leading some to wonder if weight is one of the last socially acceptable prejudices. >> i have put on a little bit of weight.

making their debut. good morning. great to have you here. >> great to be here. >> love when the dog show is in town. it is one of my favorites. you brought two dogs today who are new competitors. the breed competing for the first time. a russell terrier and a. >> tree walker coonhound. >> tell me why they are allowed to compete. >> dogs can compete once they are registered with the akc. this is the first year that both the coophou the coonhound and the terrier were recognized. >> there is a chance for each of their breeds. what are their chances in this year's show? >> i think we should ask candace and amanda. >> you both think their chances are pretty good. >> yes, i'm confident. >> what do they look for in a dog like this, sean? >> you know, each breed has a
