morning on the "today" show. he along with the other cardinals will form a conclave. this will be after the pope steps down in february. they will meet mid march to decide who will be the next catholic leader of the catholic church. the pope will stay on board until 7:00 february 28th and then he'll retire in a residence in the vatican itself. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. as we mentioned, this doesn't happen very often. been over 600 years. pope benedict xvi not the first hope to step down. the best known example was back in 1294 when pope celestine v stepped down and pope gregory xii stepped down. a developing story from southern california this morning as the manhunt continues for the former l.a. police officer

turned shooting rampage shooting suspect. "today in the bay's" marla tellez joins us live in our newsroom with a look at the search for the state's most wanted man. laura? >> reporter: so much of southern california is on edge especially since lapd is running short on new leads. since friday christopher dorner has gone silent though last night police in north ridge received two separate 911 calls from people thinking they spotted dorner inside this lowe's store. the store was evacuated but police say the reports turned out to be a case of mistaken identity. so the search does continue to focus on the area around big bear where some new developments happened over the weekend. police say they found a cache of weapons and camping gear inside dorner's burned out truck and also in a new twist, los angeles police say they are going to reopen dorner's case that originally closed back in 2009 when he was fired for making false complaints about his training officer and no doubt this is what dorner wants.

>> people think that maybe there is something to what he says. i want to put that to rest. the only way i know how to put that to rest is to review what is already been reviewed at multiple levels. >> termination would be just. it's a comprehensive process the department goes through. you don't just fire somebody without significant evidence or information. >> reporter: that was william bratton, the former police chief who signed off on dorner's firing. dorner is wanted for shooting and killing three people including riverside police officer michael crane and this morning we are learning crane's funeral is set for this wednesday. six days after dorner allegedly opened fire on him and his partner who is expected to survive. now, on friday i showed you a facebook page that has popped up for christopher dorner. over the weekend the support for him continues to grow and i'll show that to you in my next report. jon? >> okay. thank you very much. it's 6:05 right now.

dozens of tire s slashed in on street in concord. christie smith is live this morning with a look at the damage. a rough way to start a week, huh, christie? >> reporter: good morning, jon. i'm sure these car owners do not want to deal with this. someone slashed the tires on 60 cars in this neighborhood. in most cases they hit all four tires. you can see two tires flattened and a van in the driveway. someone hit that one as well. two more minivans across the street. we're on the east side of clayton road. this vandalism extends to the west side. concord police got calls around 7:00 sunday morning. the more they investigated, the worse it got. vandals hit cars in the same neighborhood. concord police say it's under investigation. they haven't said anything about suspects or arrests but i can

start. you want to keep that in mind. put that in your back pocket for tomorrow morning's drive. this morning nice and clear out there nice mild, sunny finish on the way for tomorrow as well. we'll get toward records as we get into the end of the week. today not too shabby. 62 inland. 61 at the coast. 60 degrees and phenomenal beach weather by the end of the week. let's check your drive. good morning, mike. >> good morning. out to the east shore freeway, a number of incidents toward the bay bridge and a lot of people are. west 80 or east 580 off the richmond/san rafael bridge approaching the racetrack where headlights come down from the top of your screen, reports of a crash there. off to the shoulder. i scanned the entire area as best i can from this camera and i haven't seen any flashing lights. no unusual slowing. we see a volume of traffic. anything for a distraction around that route could cause additional slowdowns. we'll track that. on the map you see it coming off the bridge. slowing approaching that bend. that may be what's going on for that flow. also at the maze, just coming

looking at the bay bridge with the backup all of the way up over here filling in all lanes. metering lights turned on in the last seven minutes. this is how quickly the backup forms down the east shore freeway slowing as well. let me show you the whole area for the maps we had an earlier stall reported approaching san francisco. nothing official from chp reports but we did hear rumor of something going on there. i scanned with camera. i didn't see any backup there and as it bled back toward the incline now we just have effects of the morning commute so we'll leave that there as i track that. slowing on the upper deck. also at the maze getting away from the bay bridge you have a crash over on the shoulder. distraction off the berkeley curve. you see slowing here heading over on 24 over toward the caldecott there and down the east shore freeway west 80 emerging with eastbound 580 off the bridge you do have another crash there. updated location from chp is buchanan, not gilman. farther down the roadway we see slowing there and slowing from richmond because of your morning commute on the richmond san

this one decided to resign. pope benedict xvi last time this happened was 700 years ago. pope benedict xvi decided that he just doesn't have the strength anymore to carry on with that very hard task. the mission of the leader. at one point 2 billion catholics around the world. certainly an unprecedented decision in modern times. a shocking decision for pretty much everybody. media journalists working in rome like myself but also the vatican. the spokesperson saying that he wasn't even aware of it. if he wasn't, who was? >> it is surprising to americans as well. we thank you very much. it's an interesting timing of it all as well right before holy week begins no doubt. that is a gruelling schedule for any pope. we'll see what happens from here. thank you very much. >> 85 years old.

basilica in vatican city no doubt taken aback by the surprise announcement. the pope says he lacks the strength to continue his service. he'll officially resign on february 28th. a conclave will then choose the next pope. the archbishop of new york describing some of the qualities he and others will consider. >> the place to start would be to look at pope benedict. there's a learning. there's a savviness about the world. there's a theological depth. there's an unquestionably personal holiness. there's a knowledge of the church universal. those would be qualities you look for. >> bay area catholics reacting to the news as well. bob redell is talking to some of them this morning. he'll have a live report for us coming up at 6:45. as the vice president continues to push against gun violence back in the u.s., south

bay city of los gatos holding its own debate on gun sales in town. at issue is a new sporting good store selling guns on university avenue. some say the city should have held a public hearing before approving permits for that store. tonight's meeting will start at 7:00 at the los gatos town hall. police say a man that looks like this pointed a gun at a man, took his wallet and then ran away. the victim was not injured. this scene happened saturday morning at an apartment complex near highway 101 and oregon expressway in palo alto. detectives seem to think this could be related to a robbery that happened just a few weeks ago of a couple in downtown palo alto. the descriptions of these gunmen in both cases very similar. two people expected to survive after crashing their car down a south bay ravine. firefighters were called to the scene yesterday afternoon around 2:00 on mt. hamilton road a mile east of where it meets clayton road. the victims' car fell 150 feet

6:39. at least 36 people are dead after a stampede in northern india. it happened at a train station after officials announced a last-minute change in the platform. the victims were among thousands of people to catch trains to return home after a traditional hindu festival. a carnival cruise ship stuck in the gulf of mexico in near galveston, texas. 4,000 people on board that ship which is now simply running on

emergency backup power. carnival says the ship is stuck because of a fire in the engine room that happened yesterday. the ship is now waiting to be towed to mexico. in l.a. county, three people are dead after a helicopter cra crash. they were filming footage for a new reality tv show for the discovery channel. the cause of the crash is still unknown. the show is military themed but it's not yet aired. down in mississippi, look at this. powerful twister caught on camera. this one ripping up the scene causing major damage on the university of southern mississippi campus. at least 13 people are injured but the good news is no deaths so far reported. power and gas lines also damaged there as a result of this big-time tornado. mississippi's governor is planning to tour that area today. 6:40. coming up, the catholic church waking up to an uncertain future. we'll tell you why the pope is stepping down and what is next for catholics around the world

breaking news from delaware this morning where three people have been shot and hurt at a courthouse in wilmington, delaware. we do know that a suspect is in custody. we're told that suspect is a man. a police captain says the victims are two women and a man. we understand the man who was hit is a security guard.

28th because of health reasons. this is the first time a pope has stepped down in almost 600 years. even those inside the vatican were surprised by this decision. a decision the supreme pontiff has been pondering for some time. the pope's brother telling a german news agency he had been thinking about resigning for the past few months because he's tired, it's becoming harder for him to walk and his doctor recently advised him to stop taking transatlantic trips. his brother calls this resignation part of the "natural process." catholics we spoke to this morning believe after eight years of the pope, he'll leave behind a strong legacy. >> he made this year the year of faith and that has been his push. the people regain the faith in god that they should have. the world is going to hell in hand basket literally. so his push was to get people together to believe that there is a god. believe that god is with you. believe that you need to change.

l.a. police officer turned shooting rampage suspect. marla tellez joining us live from the newsroom. it's been more than a week since that deadly violence started. still no signs of christopher dorner. >> which is one of the reasons why lapd is now offering a $1 million reward for his arrest and conviction. over the weekend we heard l.a.'s police chief call christopher dorner a domestic terrorist and as such authorities are not taking any chances. nbc news has obtained this latest surveillance video of dorner seen dumping equipment into a dumpster in san diego. turns out he's throwing away a gun belt, a helmet, a uniform and ammunition. this video captured one week ago today the morning after dorner is accused of shooting and killing his first victims in orange county. ultimately the search continues in big bear where his burned out truck was found last week and new developments. police say they found a cache of

weapons and camping gear in that truck. today police say some 50 lapd families continue to be guarded closely. they are the listed targets in dorner's rambling online manifesto and police chief charlie beck is making sure they have top notch security. >> targeted because of what you are and to be targeted because you took an oath to protect others and to have your family targeted because they're related to you, that is absolutely terrifying. >> meanwhile support continues to grow for dorner. on friday i showed you this facebook page called i support christopher jordan dorner. on friday it had just over 900 likes. today it has more than 8,300 fans. getting back to that $1 million reward, the police chief says it's the largest local award ever offered and he says it's easy to put together much of it

the week. now that it's getting lighter out here this morning, you can see this vandalism. you can see someone hit this suv here. three tires on this one and then if steve can pan across the street, you can see both of those work vans were hit as well if you look specifically at the front tires. in all, 60 cars hit and in most cases all four tires on the vehicles were slashed. concord police started getting calls about this early sunday morning and the more they investigated, the worst it got. cars this morning on bel air were vandalized. also across busy clayton road where we are this morning and also on glacier drive. these appear to be both cars and work vans. concord police say the incident is under investigation. they haven't released any suspect information to us or any information about possible arrests. i can tell you that we did see concord police cruising around and taking a close look with their spotlight out specifically at the cars in the streets and that sort of thing.
