out the day in the upper 60s and temperatures keep climbing. mike has the day off. we introduce anthony and your drive. >> good morning. we are tracking developing situations on the road this morning. there is no traffic that's actually being stopped now as you can see on the monitors. as you approach the area coming from the south, 101 northbound. there is debris on the roads. keep the headlights on. otherwise things look good. that's the way we like them. here's laura. >> i passed it. looks like a shredded tire. following breaking news from pittsburgh where we are hearing reports of a number of people shot including possibly a pittsburgh police officer. right now officers are fanning out along the intersection of 11th and maple where the shootings reportedly happened.

"today in the bay's" christine smith joins us. what can you tell us so far? >> i got a brief update from police and i can tell you the streets around 12th and maple are blocked off as they continue the investigation. there was an officer-involved shooting. a pittsburgh police officer was shot. the good news is he's already been treated and released from the hospital. it started around 11:30 last night. police are telling us two officers tried to contact a suspect. they are not saying what with a they were contacting him for. we can tell you they're saying he had a very long criminal history of guns and drug violations. he also had warrants out for his arrest. they're telling us when the officers tried to contact the suspect, he ran and turned around and fired at the two officers. one of the officers was hit. both of the officers including the wounded one, were able to hire back. they hit the suspect. he was taken to the hospital. he's in stable condition this morning. a 30-year-old from oakley.

police say at this point they are not looking for anyone else. but others were seen running from the area when this whole thing happened. they are interviewing a number of people this morning. hoping to get more information in a couple of minutes because pittsburgh police are on scene. i can tell you they are investigating. chp is helping out as well as the district attorney's office. that's what we have for now. reporting live in pittsburgh, kristy smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. >> we also continue following developing news out of southern california. the massive manhunt for the former los angeles police officer accused of killing four people including two law enforcement agents may have come to a fiery end. we are still waiting for confirmation that a charred body found inside a cabin in the big bear area is, in fact, christopher dorner. tony shinn has the details. >> reporter: this is where investigators say christopher dorner put up his last stand --

cornered, desperate, out of options. a law enforcement source says they heard a single gunshot before the cabin went up in flames. dorner, a 33-year-old ex-lapd officer had been on the run since super bowl sunday when police connected him to the murders of two people in california. investigators say dorner left an 11,000-word manifesto on his facebook page threatening to exact revenge on anyone connected to what he called his unjust firing from lapd. he then allegedly killed a riverside police officer and wounded two others before disappearing at big bear mountain. four days later, around noon on tuesday, an alert went out to law enforcement officers to watch for a stolen vehicle. a fish and wildlife warden on patrol spotted dorner in the vehicle. >> they were so close that he recognized his face. >> reporter: san bernardino e sheriff's deputies caught up

with dorner driving a white pickup truck at the cabin. >> i know there was an exchange of gun fire. two deputies were shot. one died as a result. the second deputy is in surgery. >> there is obviously a tactical situation right here. >> reporter: according to sources they shot teargas into the home, possibly leading to the fire and ending one of the region's most extensive and deadly manhunts. right now investigators are still in the process of positively identifying the charred remains. meantime the riverside police officer killed last week will be laid to rest later today. near big bear, california, i'm tony shinn. nbc news. >> a funeral will be held for one of the officers allegedly kill bid dorner. later this morning riverside police officer michael crane will be laid to rest. governor brown will attend the service. crane was killed february 7 after he was allegedly ambushed

at an intersection by dorner. crane is survived by his wife and two children. >> it's 4:36 now. turning to politics. this morning president obama headed to north carolina to highlight key points in last night's state of the union address. mr. obama said the state of the country is now stronger. he's pushing for changes to gun control and immigration reform. the president also demanded an end to stalemates in congress that are keeping lawmakers from passing a permanent budget. >> the greatest nation on earth cannot keep conducts business by kri drifting from one manufactured crisis to the next. >> we have heard it before. >> as far as republicans are concerned they say the president's speech lacked specifics when it comes to the economy. the president's visit in north carolina today is focused on manufacturing jobs. >> it is 4:37. san jose mayor chuck reed, sheriff lori smith and county

board of supervisors president ken yager have a plan to get guns off the street. today they will unveil an anonymous gun buyback program. people can exchange firearms for cash, no questions asked. details announced later on. >> barry bonds is in federal court trying to overturn his felony conviction. nearly two years ago he was convicted of giving misleading testimony to a federal grand jury during the steroid investigation. today a three-judge appeals panel will come from his legal team. his lawyer said bonds was handed a felony for the rambling answer, but he insists he did tell the truth. prosecutors say his rambling answer impeded the grand jury's investigation. >> want to check the forecast. we're in for a treat today. >> today, tomorrow. of course valentine's day so we all deserve a treat.

casino matrik is firing back, accusing the city of discriminating against the casino. the lawsuit accuses richard tang, administrator of the police department's gaming control of a conflict of interest because he does consulting work for other casinos. in a phone interview with nbc bay area he said there is no conflict. all my work as an independent contractor has been approve bid my supervisor. i don't do any work that would conflict with san jose courtrooms. >> it is about to get more expensive to ride on bart. they are proposing raising fares more than 5% next year sending the price from $3.40 to $3.60 depending on the distance traveled. in addition to higher fares, bart planning to increase daily parking fees by 50 cents every six months up from the current maximum of $3 a day.

right now you see the ambulance behind me loading up one of the people involved in the accident. we believe it was a woman who was ejected from her car. southbound 101 just south of the caesar chavez accident north of 280. there were two vehicles involved. there is one straight down from where we are now. a mustang up against the wall. and then the car we believe the woman was in. that's in the number two lane, the second lane off the wall. this happened around 15 a minutes ago. it will still be a while before chp caltrans, whoever else needs to be here to clean up is able to do so. now you have the two right lanes southbound 101 south of caesar a chavez shut down. the two left lanes are open. you can see with headlights headed toward us that traffic is moving smoothly now. there have been times where they had to shut down traffic or traf
