big deal is south toward whipple and off-ramp at union landing. you do have slowdown because there's a crash at the off-ramp and it sounds like at least part of that off-ramp is blocked. if they have to block the whole thing to move the car out of the area, you'll go south a little bit and take the next exit and loop back around. know it's the perimeter of the sma mall shopping area. slowing we saw through livermore sorted itself out. that's where focus of traffic is. very mild. at 6:30 things will build again. we'll see a later commute and late slowing for a short time coming through hayward. probably about 7:30 is when we'll see that. bay bridge toll plaza. let's get a quick look out there and see the backup forming in a couple of lanes in just a couple of cars deep for the cash lanes. fastrak no delays. look at that. clear view of the east shore freeway. let's show you the east shore freeway. i couldn't show you yesterday this whole area right here had

6:29 am
business and tech reporter scott mcgrew joins us. this is not the first time nasa has been accused. >> republican iowa senator chuck grassley made the same allegations in this letter back in 2012 demanding answers to those allegations some at nasa may have given away information that would violate america's laws against exporting technology. the latest version of this accusation comes from these men. lamar smith of texas. frank wolf of virginia. they are also republicans. according to the magazine "aviation week" they sent a letter to the justice department asking where there had been no prosecutions. in all of these cases the accusation take pains to name the center's director, he's former air force brigadier general pete warden seen here. they don't specifically accuse warden himself but often they question his leadership. it's hard to tell therefore how much of this is political and
6:30 am
specifically about warden. the very conservative "washington times" quotes federal prosecutors in northern california saying no criminal charges are planned. if there were technology transfers, it does not appear from the various reports that we're reading that they are the kind you see in spy movies, secret documents, that kind of thing but rather information exchanged at conferences or shown to visiting dignitaries that could be interpreted by some people as being information that shouldn't go overseas. >> okay, scott. thank you so much. this morning we are keeping our eye on that gorgeous forecast. let's get right to meteorologist christina loren and we're looking at 70s again today, huh? >> a great looking day, marla and jon. thank you for waking up with us each and every morning. the weather has been changing every day and today we're going to be warmer than yesterday. we're also dealing with less cloud cover to start. we're off to a really good looking day. 50 degrees in san jose. it's going to be cold for the

first part of the day but look at this. at 1:00 p.m. we're already at 71 degrees here in the south bay. 68 in fremont. highs today are going to be comfortable for your outdoor plans. however, i want to point out it will be on the warm side later on today. you might be turning on your heater in your car. things are going to change pretty quickly. we've got much cooler weather just ahead. stay tuned. your full forecast is coming up in about 15 minutes. we'll take you through that. first, let's check your drive. good morning, mike. >> i'm distracted because i'm watching flashing lights heading north on 880 past the coliseum. no reports of crashes on the chp report right now. i'll track this and let you know. it may be an ambulance heading toward surface streets. i'll let you know if it affects your drive on freeways. an issue south of here. 880 through oakland is fine. south from hayward approaching the san mateo bridge a build because of volume lighter on a friday. this is unexpectedly slow south of 92 off of 92 slow at the transition because of the crash at whipple. things are slow there.
6:32 am
sounds like at least part of the off-ramp is blocked. major damage to one car although injuries to the driver sounds like minimal to none as far as those go. smooth drive into the south bay. northbound 101 slowing north of 680. not unusual for that spot and lighter again for friday. south 880 another crash reported at the onramp getting on south 880 so it's not affecting your freeway speeds but this could be a hassle getting out of san jose. a quick look at palo alto and look at the peninsula drive. easy clear view 101 at university. similar situation for 280. light at the limit for both freeways and at the bay bridge toll plaza. we have the lanes starting to backup for fastrak. does look like metering lights are on now. the weird pattern for friday, that's fastrak first and then cash lanes that show backup is the opposite of the pattern you typically have monday through friday. back to you. >> mike, thank you very much. it's 6:34 right now. it was a deadly valentine's day in east san jose. police now say a man and a woman
6:33 am
found shot to death are victims of an apparent murder/suicide. that shooting happened about 4:30 in the 1800 block of bermuda way. police believe the two were romantically involved and they believe the man shot the woman and then himself. a third person was in that house at the time. police at this point have not yet identified the victims but they say they both were in their 20s. police say they do not have an exact motive for the shooting. in the east bay a 14-year-old girl is dead this morning after being hit by a car in antioch. the girl was crossing the intersection of hillcrest avenue and hidden glen drive around 6:45 last night when she was hit. she was air lifted to the hospital where she later died. the driver stayed at the scene. as of now, investigators say neither drugs nor alcohol played a role in this crash. the man accused of killing vallejo police officer james

now an update to a developing story in south africa where olympian oscar pistorius is back in jail after being charged in court with killing his girlfriend, south african model reeva steenkamp. >> oscar pistorius will remain in jail until his bail hearing next tuesday. nbc's michelle kosinski was inside the courtroom this morning and joins us from south africa where new details. good morning to you, michelle. this is not a story that i think anyone anticipated we would be covering. >> reporter: absolutely. such a strange, terribly emotional scene this morning. this is a man the world is used to seeing with his head held high making olympic history. today at his first appearance he sobbed openly. buried his face in his hands as that charge of murder was read
6:43 am
against him and prosecutors are calling this premeditated. you know that his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp, was found shot in his home early valentine's day morning. police say she was shot four time in the head and body by a .9 millimeter pistol registered to pistorius. his agent just released a statement saying they dispute this alleged murder in the strongest terms and the that pistorius sent his deepest sympathies to reeva's family. in prior interviews pistorius talked about how he liked security. he has loaded guns around. he would hear a noise, grab his gun and go investigate. police in their response to this dismiss it saying that theory didn't come from them and in fact they said there had been reports from neighbors of what sounded like a fight at the house earlier that evening and that there had been prior
6:44 am
domestic incidents there although they wouldn't give us any further details. pistorius now will be in jail until at least tuesday. that's when there will be a bond hearing. this is something that stunned the sports world and beyond with people seeming to say equally how could this have been an accident and how could this have been as prosecutors say murder? >> we heard earlier that pistorius's brother was there comforting him and putting his hand on his brother's shoulder. his father was there as well. did you see any of the victim's family in the courtroom this morning? >> reporter: i didn't. i am not sure what they look like. his father and brother were patting him on the shoulder trying to calm him down. at times it seemed like he wasn't able to get his emotions together. even the magistrate presiding over this said maybe you need to sit for a little while, have a drink of water. that emotion was just so strong. we did hear from a member of
6:45 am
reeva steenkamp's family. her uncle spoke. there's been an outpouring of grief really on both sides of this. both for pistorius and this victim. no one really can be sure what happened inside that house and it appears that only pistorius and steenkamp were home at the time. >> all right. thank you very much. again, oscar pistorius will remain in jail until tuesday when he returns to face a judge for a bail hearing. prosecutors and police asking that bail be denied. jon? >> okay. thank you very much. we have an update right now on breaking news overnight in russia where more than 400 people there are hurt after giant meteorite fragments fell to earth creating a shock wave that shattered windows. this one comes on the very same day as an asteroid half the size of a football field is set to skim right past the earth. "today in the bay's" bob redell
6:46 am
is live at chabot space and science center in oakland. your space agency there saying meteor rigite in russia has not to say about this. >> reporter: a wonderful coincidence in the fact that no one was seriously hurt makes it even better obviously. the astronomer we spoke to this morning in oakland was pointing out how spectacular that was but also from his professional point of view was pointing out how unusual it is to see a fireball during the day in the sky like that and said fortunately it was rather small astronomically spking. >> a spectacular visual object to see but a reminder of things that happened in the past and things that could happen in the future. in fact, i shouldn't say it's could, it's like earthquakes in
6:47 am
california. >> reporter: in just a few hours, all eyes will be on this object. this is an animation of an asteroid about to give us earthlings a close look. it will pass by us at 17,200 miles above earth's surface. that's closer than our satellites. unfortunately for us in the bay area, it will be too dim and not visible to the naked eye as it passes over us in the night sky. the chabot space and science center in oakland will host a viewing party using a large telescope. you'll be able to see an object, tiny dot of light drifting across the night sky and you might be able to detect its rotation by variations in brightness. the viewing party is tonight between 7:30 and 10:30 here atop the oakland hills at the chabot space and science center. it's free and open to the
6:48 am
