investigation, but as i mentioned you can see the crews there still on the scene looking for clues as to what may have started this fire and trying to figure out the origin. there is a lot of buzz around the bay area and in fact around the world this morning, about what is happening in the sky. first a meteorite explodes over russia, then an asteroid skims past the earth and now a meteor is seen streaking across bay area skies. this dash cam video uploaded to youtube shows the blue flash of what is believed to be a meteor around 8:00 last night. this driver says he was headed southbound on 280 near san francisco. similar sightings were reported from santa clara to fairfield and in parts of the central valley. our own jodi hernandez and her success witnessed that fireball at their home in fairfield and told us about it. >> we were driving on interstate westbound in fairfield and all of a sudden we saw this bright light falling from the sky. it was like a bright white

astronomical events are simply a cosmic coincidence. they say it's important to be prepared for these type of events as best we can. dozens of stargazers packed the center to watch the dark circle as it moved across the screen. it is a picture of the asteroid from the center's most powerful te telescope. that asteroid passed narrowly close to earth yesterday just 17,000 miles away, that is closer than most satellites that orbit the planet. former astronaut ed lu says the chances of an asteroid bigger than yesterday hitting the earth in the next lifetime, about 30%. he expects it would destroy about the same area as an asteroid that hit siberia in 1908. >> think of 500 to 1,000 hiroshima bombs in one place, set off simultaneously, that's

what you're looking at. draw a circle from the golden gate bridge to san jose, a big, round circle, nothing standing would be in that area, nothing. >> lu says it is important to map the trajectory of the asteroids. he adds we have the technology to deflect asteroids right now and that could save the planet. if you saw the bay area fireball we want to see it too. go to nbcbayarea.com and click on "submit your photo" to our home page. the cleanup begins in russia, workers are busy replacing windows in more than 4,000 buildings damaged by yesterday's meteorite. more than 1,000 people were hurt mostly by broken glass. the airburst flattened tens of millions of trees over an area of about 800 square miles. >> that meteorite literally shook the earth. the u.s. geological survey released a size mow gram with a magnitude 2.7 earthquake. san francisco police say two men are recovering from injuries after they were attacked by a group of robbers armed with a hatchet. the attack happened at a home on the 27th street in the nowie valley neighborhood. 58-year-old man came home to find a 69-year-old man tied up with cuts. the older man this been attacked by three men who used a hatchet to attack the 58-year-old man. right now the hatchet-wielding robbers are at large. >> i literally was at shock because i couldn't believe something like this happened on our block. this is a really safe block.

we are looking live at a picture in san francisco. you can see the high clouds but it is a mild start to the day. rob mayeda says enjoy it. it's not going to last. for the world champion giants spring training is a family reunion of sorts. this year a familiar face from the team's 2010 world series win is back in orange and black. let's head to scottsdale, arizona, for a look at the spring training action with lawrence scott. >> reporter: good morning, coming to you from the giants team store at scottsdale stadium. one of the great things about spring train something getting seasonal friends and for one giants outfielder we haven't seen in about a year we're
7:14 am
certainly glad to see him back here in scottsdale again. huge fan favorite during the 2010 series run, andres torres is back having spent last season in new york with the mets and looking forward to soon seeing friends and fan at at&t park. >> it's an honor. it's a dream come true to come back with the giants and i'm very excited. i just can't wait to be back in san francisco. >> reporter: and to torres, to finding a role as secondary being part of a winning team that reached great heights during his last time in the bay area. >> i just want to help. i want to prove that i can still play the game and want to help my team win. that's my biggest goal, help them no matter what and be prepared and i'm really excited. >> reporter: when you look at this team and parts of when you were on it in 2010 and now in 2013, what are you looking the most forward to? >> just we play as a team. you think good chemistry and we play together and you see how,
7:15 am
you know, i say we're going to keep continue winning championships. >> reporter: always such a likeable guy with a great smile and tons of energy. it is great to see andres back with the giants here at spring training in scottsdale. let's send it back to you in the studio. >> and get right back to making chemistry, right? coming up, all position players are now in scottsdale. we will hear from some of the stars about their expectations for this season, including angel pagan. plus we'll head over to phoenix and check out one of the a's leaders, josh reddick. we enjoyed this beautiful, warm weather but it's not the right time. local winemakers fear it may be a little too beautiful to are their crop. typically we get more cold weather and rain this time of year which keeps the harvest from growing. if warm weather happens too soon the grapevines grow, making them vulnerable to a cold snap later on and that could lead to a reduction of grape yields for

winemakers. they admit however it is still early and there is still rain in the forecast sooner than you might like. rob mayeda is here with a look at the forecast. we were talking earlier, all the kids that drop off you see the winter coats are getting too small and you don't want to buy another one. >> you might need to when you look at the seven-day forecast it doesn't look like we're going to see the 60s and 70s last. it's february. we shouldn't be seeing this weather this early in the year but it is a gorgeous way to kick off your presidents' day holiday weekend. live view out of san jose, high cirrus clouds streaming up from the south. 45 degrees, beautiful sunrise, at the bay area right now, 50 in san francisco, 51 in oakland. some of the inland valleys a little bit chilly but not too bad. 39 in livermore, 39 in santa rosa and right now the wind for now still somewhat offshore at times, but we will see an onshore push sea breeze by this time tomorrow which means we're going to see cooling temperatures as we finish off the holiday weekend.
7:17 am
the radar right now is dry and unfortunately that has been the story of 2013 so far as the semipermanent ridge of high pressure over northern california keeping things dry. the water vapor loop shows you most of the deep moisture riding up to the north and the mid level moisture, the high clouds we'll see at times which will filter the sun at times. the big pattern shift that's going to take place, mild start to the weekend and watch what happens as we get towards tuesday, a cold trough drops in from british columbia, almost a 20-degree drop in temperatures as we get out of the holiday weekend. during the day today you'll see high clouds at times filtering the sunshine and then coastal low clouds likely to return as we get into later on tonight on into your sunday as temperatures cool off for the second half of the weekend. still near 70 for one more day, areas san jose south towards the trivalley should see mild temperatures saturday afternoon and oakland and san francisco, highs in the mid to upper 60s
7:18 am
and still a chance seeing 70s around parts of the north bay but the onshore winds cooling off temperatures beginning tomorrow they'll drop down more with more cloud cover into monday, and look at the drop, 70 today and now watch towards wednesday and thursday, and especially tuesday, you can see those temperatures coming on down into the low 50s, chilly rain, probably about a half inch or so of rain so that will be good after this dry pattern we've seen, maybe a foot of snow in the sierra and staying cool and unsettled off and on. reminder we're still in winter and you may need to do shopping for rain and winter coats. >> keep strapping them. it's an appropriate time, a lot of schools have ski week. we call it i'm bored week in our house. >> good for the ski season, too. >> thanks, rob. much more ahead on "today in the bay," coming up, pets accidentally lost, killed, injured, all in the care of airlines. we investigate what happens when some animals travel in cargo. many people entrust airlines to get their dog or cat to their destination safely but are there dangers in shipping a pet in cargo? investigative reporter elise kirschner found horrific incidents of animals killed or hurt while in transit. and discovered the airlines can sometimes face few consequences. >> reporter: our pets become our best friend. they are part of the family. and losing them can be devastating. that's why caleb's owner is so worried. >> treat my dog gently. >> reporter: the problem is he's much more than this family can handle. >> they can take him to the beach and have an acre to live on. >> reporter: to give him a better life he's about to be shipped on cargo on a flight from the bay area to washington. >> i'm praying he'll get there safely and it will go smoothly. good boy. >> reporter: to find out we placed this camera and

but we don't know how many animals are transported. by law, airlines only have to disclose that a pet is hurt, lost or died during the trip. delta saw the most incidents, followed by alaska, american airlines, continental, and united airlines, one of those incidents on united involved a dog named bam bam. >> his ticket was twice as mine was. >> reporter: michael paid to have bam bam on united's pet program. >> they guarantee you your pet will always be in acclimated surroundings. >> reporter: during a layover in houston he saw his dog sitting on the tarmac on a luggage cart. >> spent almost four hours in that plastic kennel in conditions well above 85 degrees. >> reporter: just after touching down at sfo, he was given the news. >> said i'm sorry, he didn't make it. >> reporter: the airlines told
7:24 am
him bam bam's heart gave out, his death unrelated to how united handled him. for his loss united gave jarbo $1,000 in travel vouchers. >> if you or i would do this, you know, we could be criminally prosecuted for that. >> reporter: we examined hundreds of reports released to the d.o.t. and found government oversight varies. last year, two pets were accidentally loaded in a baggage bin with a container of dry ice. both died. in response, delta reviewed its training procedures. >> the airlines are not being forced to take responsibility. >> reporter: mary beth launched a facebook page to find a cat named jack. when an american airlines clerk dropped his kennel, jack went missing. two months later, he fell through an airport ceiling, so sick he had to be euthanized. today, the d.o.t. still lists jack as lost. >> the airlines do not treat your animal any differently than they treat any other luggage. >> reporter: airlines for

welcome back. here's a live view this morning of oakland looking at some hazy and somewhat clear skies to start off your saturday morning. our temperatures outside, mild in oakland and san francisco, near 50 degrees to get things going on your saturday, 45 in san jose. little more chilly in inland valleys we're in the upper 30s in concord and livermore towards santa rosa as well looking chilly this morning. by the afternoon we're going to see everybody warming up into the 60s and low 70s for another day but one thing to watch will be the seabreeze which is going to turn on late today and that's going to lead to some cooling changes through the weekend. right now the radar view is dry and going to say that way through monday, but this high pressure system which has been locked in on us, giving us these warm conditions is going to give way. first you can see this upper level system bringing us the

high clouds at times for today, we're going to look at partly cloudy skies for your saturday afternoon but the pattern shift that's going to take place, the high is going to build back to the west of us, allowing this cold front trough to drop in, this is tuesday, so we're going to see temperatures drop from the 60s and 70s today to upper 50s and low 50s by the time we get into tuesday and wednesday so much cooler, rain making a comeback. we need the rain and snow. it's been the driest start to any year and bay area weather records. we'll see that change a little bit but after the holiday weekend. high clouds at times from the morning going from south to north. partly cloudy skies early, the clouds should thin out towards the evening and as the sea breeze picks up we're going to see coastal low clouds perhaps spilling into the bay tomorrow morning. highs around san jose should still be near 70 degrees and some low to mid-70s south. those will be the warmest places we see around the bay area this holiday weekend and things cool cool down tomorrow. 60s and 70s around the trivalley and into san francisco. oakland highs in the mid-60s.
7:45 am
late day seabreeze may cool things off along the peninsula and coast for your saturday afternoon. temperatures starting to drop as the clouds increase, showers late, north of santa rosa there, for monday night and then tuesday and wednesday look at that temperature drop, low 50s for highs, we're going to see probably about a half inch of rain out of that system on tuesday, and snow levels between 3,000 to 4,000 feet so the snowpack will get a bit of a boost and our very dry winter rainfall total also get a boost, too, tuesday a brief break, wednesday afternoon and more chilly showers coming in on thursday. so all things considered with the holiday weekend, timing working out good. >> it's appropriate a lot of the school districts have ski week. >> and perfect timing. >> for the kids that get to go. thanks, rob. of all the challenges that come with age, loss of independence is one of the toughest and not always because of the physical problems. older people shrink into their world because they don't feel
