in. light volume of traffic. slower vehicles because there are no more incidents through this area. earlier one south of there in lanes. activities in the report but not on the sensors. we'll give you a better look at your commute as it develops this morning. back to you. we are following breaking news out of the south bay this morning where a traffic stop turneded in ed ined into a dead pursuit throughout overnight. an officer was conducting a stop near capital expressway and towers lane around 11:00. that's when the driver of a dark colored suv attempted to run over the officer. the officer jumped out of the way, got in his car and followed the vehicle on southbound 101. after an 11-mile chase, the suspect crashed near monterey and blossom hill roads in south san jose. the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. two passengers are being treated for nonlife threatening injuries. we'll bring you live reports in

our 5:00 hour. fire investigators working to find the cause of an apartment fire over the weekend that ended up killing a 10-year-old girl. the fire swept through the building on saturday. she was the only one sadly who did not make it out. last night her mother, friends and neighbors gathering to grieve outside of that apartment building. her mother says she can't help but feeling pains of guilt for what happened. >> i thought i got all of the kids out. didn't know she was the only one still upstairs. and now as a parent i feel bad i wasn't able to go back in to get her because they wouldn't let me back in. >> so sad. that fire left 22 people homeless. two firefighters did suffer minor injuries but they are expected to be okay. we'll learn more today about the boat crash that killed one man and injured another in the bay this weekend. a speed boat collided with the

ferry. two men in the speed boat were hurt. one died from his injuries. this morning we expect to learn the names of those two men. the coast guard is expected to release findings next week. a new sketch of a man who beat up two women in separate attacks in the mission district. this is the man they're looking for. they say two weeks ago a woman passed this man and then he punched her times and ran off. two weeks before that a woman was beaten to the ground just after walking past that man. police say he slammed her head into the pavement. people we talked to say they are very surprised by the attacks. >> the tenderloin and downtown is different but in areas like this or even the mission. i live in hayes valley. it's quieter. there are always people out. you don't think that could happen. >> others tell us they had not heard about these attacks and

now plan to be more aware in that area. police do not believe robbery or sexual assaults was the motive. east palo alto police immediate your help to find ath person who shot a homeless man in the leg. so far police say a car linked to the shooting was located nearby but no arrests have been made and the motive is unknown. if you have any information, call police. journalists laura ling will be in san jose later today talking about her 140 days of captivity in north korea. we have video of ling and her colleague returning home after receiving a pardon from north korea back in 2009. ling and lee have been reporting on the trafficking of north korean women when they were detained by soldiers. ling is also to speak at the california theater on first street in san jose tonight. that one starts at 7:30. this is an amazing

turnaround for san jose high school boys basketball team that was the center of a national controversy just over a year ago. last year gunderson coach suspended a handful of varsity behaviors for bad behavior. eight other players walked off in protest. allen fielded a new team with players from the junior varsity squad and the team finished with a losing record. this year they are headed to the playoffs. san jose mercury news say the team kept the team practices over the summer. two ayeplayers that walked out apologized to the coach and returned to the team. playoffs start this week. good luck to them. >> tough to stand by the coach and it pays off. christina loren talking about a nice day ahead. >> not as nice as over the weekend. hope you had a chance to enjoy that. it was beautiful. temperatures today will drop off by about 15 degrees.

speeds dip below 65. really no incidents for this area. we'll also take you out toward the tri-valley with a smooth flow of traffic west 580, south 680. no delays. no issues as far as fog goes. it's pretty good right now as far as visibility here. also in palo alto. you can see it clear. northbound taillights past willow. earlier overnight crash has cleared. all activity is gone from the peninsula as far as any chp reports go. back to you. it's 4:38. it's a well known tradition college students throwing long parties but how about 46 hours straight? and it's all for a very good cause. over 16,000 people dancing the weekend away at penn state university for charity. the annual dance marathon raised $12.3 million and all this fund to benefit kids with cancer. what a great cause.

counting yesterday's total, students have now raised more than $100 million for cancer research and treatment since the first one way back in 1977. they do know how to get down. >> a good turnout. look at that. here in the bay area they cut it off for a good cause. people lined up at w salon in santana row yesterday to get a haircut and donate it to wigs for kids. the organization helped hundreds of kids every year suffering from medically related hair loss. the only requirement was your hair had to be at least 10 inches long before they chopped it. among people donating, a mother and daughter growing their hair for years. >> i lost my grandmother to breast cancer and my mother-in-law to lung cancer. it's a good cause. we're chopping our hair off for it. >> organizers say they had a huge turnout. everne who donated their hair received two free tickets to

welcome back. a good monday morning. you'll notice a difference in the temperature. dropping today. also this week. change on the way. we'll check that forecast with meteorologist christina loren coming up in just a bit. 4:42. a new report shows facebook is getting a big check this year from uncle sam. the citizen for tax justice report says the social networking giant will receive a large tax refund this year. the tax break is mainly due to the company's executive stock options being tax deductible. that alone reduced the company's income taxes by more than a billion dollars in 2012. the company also paid no state or federal income taxes last year. apparently some thirsty customers determined to save every last drop of whisk y convinced the producers with the

plan to lower the amount of whisky in each bottle. after a massive backlash from customers on social media, the company changed its mind. it says it will restore the alcohol content back to its original level. >> never mind. a local tennis tradition ending its 125-year run in the bay area. the men's tennis tournament wrapped up at san jose hp pavilion yesterday. the tournament director says the single court set is just not ideal for the tournament and tough to get big name players. >> i'll definitely miss it. i have seen tennis for the last couple years for our company. i play. i like it. my family plays. and this week has been nothing but great matches and our staff is phenomenal, so i'll miss it for them and miss it with them. >> it began in 1889 in monterey.

it moved to san francisco, berkeley before eventually ending up in san jose in 1994. all right. 4:44 right now. christina loren is back. we've been enjoying great weather. reality is starting to sink back in. >> let me break it down. 30 days until spring. if you want more over the weekend, not too far off. the climatology says that warmer weather is coming our way. we've got another blast of winter to get through before we get to enjoy a little bit of a warmup toward the end of the week. temperatures this morning are crisp out there. we won't see that much of a climb with limited sunshine for today. especially right off the bat. we have that marine layer pushing inland and temperatures even with a full deck of clouds overhead are still pretty cold. limited sunshine means temperatures today staying on the cool side. we have an area of low pressure tracking closer and closer to the coastline. we stop the clock on future cast until 7:00 a.m. drizzle is possible along the peninsula as you make your way to work if you have to go to work today.

warm you up back to low 60s. back to you, jon and laura, for now. >> thank you very much. sad news now from the world of country music. mindy mccready is dead this morning after apparently shooting herself. authorities say she killed herself in the same place her longtime boyfriend is believed to have committed suicide just weeks ago. mccready had a series of hits in her career including "guys do it all the time" and "10,000 angels." in 2004 she had a series of personal problems including run ins with the law and a stint in rehab. oscar pistorius will not compete in any races this year. his agent confirmed late last night he was canceling the track star's scheduled races for the foreseeable future so pistorius can focus on the murder charge against him. he was charged with murder last thursday after his girlfriend

reeva steenkamp was found shot several times inside his home. he's being held at a police station in the south african capital. steenkamp's funeral is set for tomorrow. new this morning, russian researchers found pieces of that meteorite that exploded on friday. about 53 pieces were found near a frozen lake. the largest piece is about a centimeter in diameter. pretty small there. scientists estimating the total weight of that meteor was 10 tons. the cleanup conditions in the russian city where the meteorite exploded. this is damage left behind by that meteorite. workers and volunteers have blanketed that region to help with the relief efforts. scientists estimate the explosion was as strong as 20 hiroshima bombs. the streaking meteor was caught on tape over that area. you can see it blasting through

the sky. that's surreal. tough immigration reform has hit a snag. the proposal would immediately protect 11 million illegal immigrants and allow them to become citizens within eight years. it does not guarantee what republicans want, more border security first. >> that tells us he's looking for a partisan advantage and not a bipartisan solution. >> this is the president torpedoing his own plan. >> if those do not work out, we'll have an option that we'll be ready to put out there. >> the white house calls the proposal a backup plan if a bipartisan group cannot come up with a solution. they are threatening to stop it if it comes up for a vote. a new study may have you rethinking what and how much your kids watch on tv. researchers find changing the

channel from a violent show to an educational one can improve a preschooler's behavior even though you don't decrease the tv they watch. the results were modest but researchers say it could lead to ways to get kids for avoid aggressive and violent behavior and researchers say benefits did fade away over time. david lee throws down at the all-star game. nascar's danica patrick steps up and steps into the history books. you'll drive a little slower than that across the san mateo bridge though it is clear here. look at the north bay coming up.

right now live pictures out of tampa bay, florida, where fire crews are battling a fire at a recycling facility. this is happening according to our local affiliate. they say that fire is in a pile of 30 feet high and they are using bulldozers to isolate the flames. they moved several tanks to be safe away from the flames so they don't catch fire as well. we'll keep you posted on that one down in tampa, florida. the empire state building lit up red, white and blue this morning in honor of presidents day. the iconic building changing the lights on saturday and plans on continuing the patriotic display through today. presidents day honors all american presidents but more specifically it focuses on

george washington and abraham lincoln. the golden state warriors back to work today after a weekend off at the all-star game. four of the warriors were in houston to take part in those festivities including david lee. lee played just over 13 minutes, scored six points, helping the west beat the east 143-138. >> biggest thing is just getting to interact with the guys and be part of a special weekend overall and representing the warriors. we haven't had an all-star since '97. great to get out and represent the bay area and warriors and all my teammates. if we weren't winning, i wouldn't be there. i'm excited for that. >> also for the warriors, stephen curry was part of the three-point competition while others played in the rising stars game. >> very cool. always good to be representing. right now mike inouye representing what's happening on the roads out there.

good monday morning. thanks for joining us. 4:59. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm jon kelley. good morning, everybody. breaking news right now to tell you about out of the south bay as police investigate a pursuit that ends in a deadly car crash. police say the suspect tried to run over an officer and sped off and crashed his car. "today in the bay's" arturo santiago is live in san jose with the story. arturo, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the traffic investigation unit was working into the early morning hours on this one after someone apparently tried to run over a san jose police officer. it happened just after 11:00 last night. the officer involved was conducting a traffic stop near capital expressway and towers lane. for some reason a driver tried to run over the officer and drove off. the police officer had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit by that suv. he then got into his patrol car and pursued the suspect who was heading south on highway 101 toward blossom hill road.

now, at one point the suspect turned off his lights as a tactic to try to get away. the driver eventually lost control and rolled into a ravine near monterey road. that suspect was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. >> four officers were able to take him into custody and summoned for the san jose fire department. they rolled out and got to the scene almost immediately. they were tending to the suspect at the time when he stopped breathing and he was later pronounced dead in the ravine. >> reporter: the vehicle was stolen out of san jose. there were also two female passengers who were in the suv. they had nonlife threatening injuries and were taken to the hospital. the san jose police department's traffic investigations unit is handling this ongoing investigation. we're live in san jose, i'm arturo santiago, "today in the bay." in just a few hours we expect to learn new details about a deadly f
