a tornado touched down. we'll talk about that. first a check on the morning drive. good morning, mike. >> good morning. guess we're not in kansas anymore. on the san mateo bridge there is a wind advisory. the camera is steady. we'll check the bay bridge toll plaza -- we'll look at the incline -- oh, there we go. we have the toll plaza. we had a change in the router i forgot about. these are issued by chp, not the weather service. that means there was a gust or two overnight. back to you. >> thank you very much. 4:32. happening now in south africa, a tearful oscar pistorius back in court now for day two of his bond hearing. south african police found testosterone and needles at the home of the double amputee olympian while investigating the shooting death of his girlfriend last week. the athlete's lawyers say it was an herbal remedy, not a steroid.

prosecutors argue bail should be denied claiming the shooting was likely the result of a fight. between pistorius and steenkamp that morning. he shot his girlfriend four times through the bathroom door. >> new this morning the question remainsing did all the cold weather we're having play a role in a water main break overnight in san francisco. right now public works crews are in north beach. they are there mopping up the mess. bob riddell live with a look at the damage and cleanup now under way. bob, good morning. >> good morning. not much in the way of damage near the intersection of philbert and mason. the water company, you can see, has been able to dramatically decrease the pressure of the water main break. it's a gurgle now if you will, not like earlier when this break happened around 2:50 in the morning. it was ankle deep in this intersection. the water department wants to have water still coming out so

when they start digging up the ground here at fill bert and mason they can see where the water is coming from. they believe it's a six-inch water line made of cast iron. with we are talking to oh the water department. one of three things that could have burst the line. they don't know. they will probably get a good idea. one of three things. the ground shifts, old age or weather. it has been cold. they don't know right now. in the meantime there will be two blocks that will be without water. that could be for several hours. >> got up at 2:20 as i do every day to go to work at a 3:00. brushed my teeth, washed my face and there was no water. all i could hear were bubbles in the background. then i walked down the street and i see this mess all over the place. it's just amazing. >> for several hours, the time it will take them to dig up that section of fillbert.

they are placing the cones. that part will be shut down but not in the intersection. mason will eventually re-open. pay son also is a cable car line. they have been out here. they have to clean the cable car run to make sure there is no debris in there. what they will do is have a bus shuttle for the mason line to get between -- get around this point right here. bottom line is filbert will be shut down for a good portion of the day. mason should re-open eventually maybe sometime during the morning. just depends on when they can get this muck cleaned up. it looks like the water main has been shut off for the most part. they have low pressure going to determine where it's coming out of the line. reporting live in san francisco, bob riddell, "today in the bay." >> 4:35. a disturbing discovery. a hiker in a preserve in san mateo county stumbles upon human remains.

it happened monday afternoon in the redwoods open space just west of 280 near woodside. the remains were with found a hundred feet off the trail. detectives were called to the scene to confirm the remains were human. they are now working to identify them. >> for the first time, we are hearing from the man accused of a deadly mass shooting at a santa clara tech company. wu took the stand yesterday during h his murder trial. he's pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. wu accused of walking into siport in 2008 and shooting and killing three company executives. he was fired the morning of the shooting. wu reportedly told the jury the loss of his job coupled with with with personal financial trouble caused him to go insane. he's expected to continue his testimony today. >> 4:36. a bay area teenager among people rescued during a prostitution sting in the south bay. the 16-year-old told police she

had been a prostitute since she was 11 years old. investigators say she was a runaway forced to work the streets the past five years. the sting happened near motels on monterey road south of downtown. eight people were arrested. the 16-year-old was not charged. instead will receive help. >> for her to be exposed to it and continuously doing it for five, six years and now she's off the streets. now we have to get her some of the services we provide. >> the girl is now with child protective services which will decide whether she will eventually be reunited with her family. >> adding a new layer to the gun control debate animal welfare groups want to ban lead ammunition in hunting. defenders of wildlife want a bill sometime this week to make california the first state ban toxic bullets. environmentalists say endangered birds are dying from lead

poisoning when they eat dead animals shot by hunters. the fish and game commission is also being asked to pass the ban. >> stanford university is the first school to top $1 billion in fund-raisinging in one year according to the council for education survey. a total of more than $1 billion breaks down to nearly $56,000 for each of the undergraduate and graduate students. school officials say the money will be used for research and construction. harvard was a distant second with with $650 million. u.c. berkeley was the leading fund-raising among all public universities taking in just over $400 million. >> a lot of cash there. it doesn't look like the nfl will be spending money to keep the raiders in oakland. city officials say the league is concerned about fan support as we give you a live look over

o-dot-co. the 49ers were able to charge more for premium seating in the new stadium but league oh ficials don't believe oakland could do the same. as it is, the raiders are having trouble selling out home games and are sometimes blacked out on tv as a result. the league will not give the raiders money for a new stadium but the team has the right to apply for a league loan of up to $200 million. >> the bay area may be in the running to host the 2024 summer olympic games. the u.s. olympic committee sent letters to mayors of 35 cities including san francisco, san jose and sacrament to gauge interest in potential bids. los angeles, dallas and tulsa, oklahoma, among the cities that expressed interest. the u.s. hasn't hosted a summer games since atlanta in 1996. salt lake city was the last to stage the winter games in 2002. >> that would be a spectacle here in the bay area. >> got some stadiums we could use. >> it would be very good.

atlanta was fun. maybe it will be here. let's see how cold it will be. >> good morning to you. near records. it hardly ever gets this cold even in february. temperatures are chilly. 31 degrees in santa rosa. expecting to drop into the 20s. we have winds helping us out. helping the fog from forming at the surface and helping frost from developing. as soon as we lose the wind it's a whole other scenario. we have three additional hours of cooling before we hit our lows. just want to show you what the wind in combination with the cool temperatures leads to. fairfield, a west-southwest wind at 10 miles per hour. temperatures in the 30s. however it feels like 26 degrees. northwest wind, 5 to 15 miles per hour. it will be a cold start to the day. like i said before the wind will help in a couple different areas. a, it will keep frost and fog from forming and will keep the

skies clear to start the day. we'll hit the 60s as a result. more rain on the way. we're almost to the weekend now. your weekend forecast is coming up. stay tuned for that. let's look at the drive with mike. >> we are looking at 880 through fremont. the southbound side past the truck scales with the headlight hs. very few headlights going through the area. into the south bay, maps as well. the orange b on here, often times means fog. we took a look with live cameras. maybe low clouds. moisture in the area. not an issue for visibility for the drive. south 280 coming down at el monte. we have a stall. vehicle reported in the center divide. there may have been a fender bender as well. watch for flashing lights but no slowing. a live look at the peninsula. 101 through palo alto up into the city. right here looking past university without real issues.

facebook discloses it was hacked. hackers used a security flaw in the java software to gain access to servers. apple said there is no evidence any personal or confidential data was stolen. good news there. opening arguments start today in a case pitting two retail giants and involving martha stewart. macy's is suing jc penney to stop the rival store from selling certain martha stewart living items. macy's has exclusive rights to the brand. it is expected that stewart and jc penney and macy's ceos will testify. back to you. >> okay. seem gla, thank you very much. >> hundreds of drivers spend much of the night stranded in the mountains, caught up in a sudden snowstorm. chp says conditions deteriorated rather quickly on highway 58 near tahatchapee. officers had to shut down a stretch of road overnight. the chp is working to get cars off the road. officers say the highway was

we had a rope tornado touch down if the central valley yesterday. some of the highlights around the bay area. hail right outside my house in campbell. we had hail reports from san jose to that pa valley. more rain yesterday in just one day than the entire month of february. we had sleet reported down to 450 feet. it was an active day today. we'll deal with the after math. still damp out there. it's cold as well. le cold oh enough for the water, the moisture left on the roadways to freeze in santa rosa at 31. travel cautiously. same for that pa at 34. 32 in gilroy. wherever you are headed, especially over bridges and overpasses where you get the cold metal, take it easy. weather headlines tell the story. a frigid start. crisp sunshine. we have a gorgeous day shaping up. air quality will be perfect. thick fog tomorrow. won't be able to see the sky but it will be sunny and mild. as we get into the end of the

downtown kansas city. as of now, officials say 16 people were hurt, three of them seriously. the exact cause of the blast remains under investigation. witnesses reported smelling natural gas hours before the explosion. >> 4:50. a different kind of tourism boom could be headeded to colorado. a task force is drawing up regulations to allow people from outside the state to shop at marijuana stores. the buyers could be restricted to buying just an 8th of an ounce of weed. the move would prevent people from stockpiling marijuana to sell on the black market. california voters approved legalizing pot in november. the first recreational marijuana stores are expected to open next year. >> the time is 4:51. a date with destiny. a south bay boxer getting the fight of his life. >> plus, strapped for cash. the u.s. postal service comes up with a very unusual way to make money. >> a live look at the east shore

the cleanup from an overnight water main break. this morning a cable car line is affected. we just got word from crews how long the cleanup will take. bob riddell is live in north beach this morning. he h's got the details for us. bob? >> good morning. you see behind me the city of san francisco is trying to get this mud out of the road, especially in the cable car tracks. if you get debris in there it's not safe to run the cable cars. they will run a shuttle bus up till the lines are cleared. mason should be open within a couple of hours. we spoke with the san francisco water department. they have turned off the water a here at filbert and mason. if you look over there to where the green post office box is, that's where the water had been gushing out. they have isolated a break to a 12-inch line. not a six-inch line as they originally thought. the first priority is to turn back
