i didn't have any bonnet on. >> that's too bad. >> you got a new dress. >> i did. the whole thing was a lesson to turn something so cute into something terribly creepy. >> all that coming up. a lot to talk about. let's begin with the massive crash at daytona that injured dozens of fans. officials say the daytona 500 race will go on today in just hours. janet is at the international speedway for us this morning. good morning. >> lester, good morning. we were here when this happened. all eyes on the track. it was a horrifying crash. a car sheered in half. the injured weren't the drivers in the car but the fans in the stands. >> contact. >> a violent crash that started on the crash and ended in the grandstand. the wreckage of a race car. large chunks of metal and a tire

flying into the air and hitting fans as high as 45 rows up. it was the final lap. drivers were jockeying for position when a bump between cars turned terrifying. >> tony stewart is going to win this race. >> it was kyle larsen's car sheered in half and tore through the fence designed to protect fans. the engine burst into flames, as other debris went sailing into the stands. a tire in the stands. people scrambling and waving to get help for the injured. mike wilkinson had a clear view from his seat but couldn't bear to match. >> i was stunned. i saw the car fly up and hit the fans, a fireball erupted. i turned away. i didn't want to see what happened. >> a scene of complete chaos. more than 30 hurt. 14 taken to daytona hospitals.

among the most serious a child in critical but stable condition. >> fans want to be close to the action in daytona. if you walk by the fence, you will feel it. your hair will be sucked side ways because you're so close to the action. that's what fans want. >> amazingly, kyle larsen walked away from the accident. no other drivers were seriously hurt. they moved quickly to repair the damage ahead of today's daytona 500. as nascar said it would take a close look at what happened. >> we need to take the time to study it and see what we can. if we can, certainly, you know, the safety of our fans is first and foremost and we will make that happen. >> it can be risky business navigating the heavily horsepowered cars. as one driver said after the accident, we assume the risk. it shouldn't be the fans. >> and the speedway worked overnight to repair and replace the retaining wall and the fence

damaged in the accident. nascar said the daytona is ready for its signature race that starts at 1:00 eastern time and fans will be seated in the same stands where so many were hurt on saturday. >> kevin meister had a bird's eye view. he was in the upper deck above the crash site. what did you see? >> well, all the action really started as soon as the drivers came around turn 4. you can tell the racers jumped on the gas. right before he hit the checkered finish everybody started getting loose, made a block. all of a sudden there was a huge crash right into the gate. there was a car completely vertical. and all of a sudden you saw fiberglass just everywhere like confetti at a party. >> tell me what was going on in the stands.

my understanding is you went down to the ledge to shoot what was below you. what did you see in terms of the people in the impact area? >> right. as soon as i ran down to the ledge to see what had happened and see what exactly was going on, people were panicking and police and ushers were trying to escort people out of the area so that medical teams get to the injured folks. there are a lot of people around trying to comfort those who are clearly injured. and ien everyone saw a man take off his shirt and wrap it around a couple lacerations that another man had. i saw another guy passing out water. but you really saw human compassion right after that happened. people were in a state of shellshock. >> kevin, i understand you're a big nascar fan. we all see the big fences there to protect the crowd from flying debris, from crashes. how shocking was it to see it actually go above the phelps and

to go into the area where the crowd was? >> you see the fence and you feel pretty safe as a spectator. until something like that actually happens and, you know, the engine actually broke through the fence, that was surreal. to think that something like that actually had a possibility of happening and did yesterday is just devastating. >> you'll attend the race today with no reservations 1234. >> no reservations at all. i'm an avid nascar fan. thankfully we were out of the debris zone. but 15 feet in front of me sort of right down below. it looked like a shock absorber, a metal rod of some type came up into my section, which was the upper deck. >> very frightening pictures there. kevin, thank you for spending time with us. appreciate it. >> thank you. >> and now here's erica. >> lester, thanks. huge crowds filled st. peter's square for pope benedict's final

blessing. four days he will step down as head of the catholic church. the vatican is dealing with new allegations today involving one of its cardinals. anne thompson has more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, erica. it's a mixture of joy and intrigue here in vatican city. this morning catholics and the curious jammed st. peter's square to hear pope benedict's final blessing. this got not only a blessing but the pope also shed light on why he resigned. god had called him on the mountain to live a life of more prayer and meditation but he wasn't going to abandon the church. the 85-year-old pontiff said that god had had asked him to live this life with the same kind of dedication but to do so more in a way appropriate to his age and strength. now, this very joyous event took place against a background of scandal. there are new headlines in britain this morning, three priests and a former priest

accused the scottish cardinal keith o'brien of inappropriate behavior going back some 30 years. they want cardinal o'brien to resign immediately before he comes to rome to vote for the new pope. i asked about this today and he told me that the pope will be informed of this matter this afternoon and that tomorrow the vatican will issue a statement. erica? >> anne, we're hearing plenty at home in the u.s. former archbishop of los angeles also facing problems with a priest sexual abuse scandal there. >> reporter: he is. that's cardinal roger mahoney. yesterday he was deposed for almost four hours. he was asked by lawyers what he knew about a visiting mexican priest who was accused of abusing some 26 children in the 1980s. court documents released earlier this year showed cardinal mahoney played a role in shielding abusive priests. some u.s. catholics called on

mahoney not to come to rome to vote for the new pope. mahoney says he intends to participate. >> anne, thank you. in washington, time is really ticking for the president and congress to reach a deal. otherwise, there will be massive spending cuts you keep hearing so much about. the sequester that could have a major effect on you. david gregory is moderator of "meet the press". good morning. boy, i feel like we say this a lot. but with good reason. broken record yet again. first, just give us a quick sense of what this could actually do to people, if this cut will go in effect on friday. >> one of the things we will talk about is what does it mean for air travelers. you have the ability of air controllers or the prospect i should say of flight controllers being furloughed. a number of them losing their jobs, airport towers being closed in certain parts of the country. it could mean very really

delays. republicans say that's overblown. but federal workers are going to get cut. services are going to be cut. the defense is going to be cut by 50%. this meat cleaver approach both sides agree is a terrible idea, is how the cuts will be made. that is what has most people worried. >> both sides think it is a terrible idea but it's almost a foregone conclusion this is going to happen. why can't, david, lawmakers find some sort of agreement here? >> well, because philosophically they're on opposite ends of this. the president wants a mix of spending cuts, new tax revenues through some kind of tax reform closing loopholes. he's blaming congress for not giving in on that. congress is saying, look, you just got new revenues to avert the fiscal cliff at the end of the year. there ought to be more spending cuts, particularly entitlement cuts. they cannot see eye to eye. they're not talking to each other. both sides are working the

public relations sympathy. the public is fed up and will only get more aggravated as it moves forward. >>. p.r. campaign is not winning over the people that put them in w washington. and right now a check of the morning's other top stories. jenna wolf is standing by. >> hey, guys. good morning. good morning, everyone. police in las vegas have identified the person responsible for a deadly shooting on the strip. investigators found the vehicle believed to be involved in the shooting and subsequent crash that killed three people on thursday. also, they've identified 26-year-old amar harris as the suspect. his vehicle was found blocks away from the shooting scene. while oscar pistorius remains holed up at his uncle's home in south africa we are learning about legal troubles for his brother. the family lawyer says carl pistorius is facing a culpable

homicide. he isn't allowed back to his house because it is now considered a crime scene. a mall melee in chicago. about 20 teenagers arrested after police say they were running around causing a chaotic scene. police say there was no looting. only a little bit of damage. the boy band mindless behavior was there but that had nothing to do with the chaos. in china, they started shooting out of a building overnight after a fire happened inside. that started in a candle production area and spread to a fireworks warehouse on the lower floors. let me see if i can get. this candles and fireworks being made in the same building. okay. tonight, hollywood will recognize the best of the best in the motion picture industry. last night, last night the worst of the worst took center stage at the razzies. the big winner or loser,

twilight breaking dawn part 2. it took were seven awards, including kristen stewart for worst actress. they both made a gazillion dollars making the worst movie. that is probably what they're saying. i would probably say the same thing. you want to give a razzie, give me the gazillion dollars that goes along with it. >> and our first check of the weather. >> storms making their way into the plains states. right now in the rockies. we will pick up another 6 to 10 inches of snow in denver. you can see we have blizzard warnings posted through the plains. kansas looks like we will see our second blizzard in just a week. that's what we're facing through the plains. so it is going to be a rough go through kansas, into nebraska, into northern parts of oklahoma and the panhandle of texas as well. today, though, it's all about denver.

breezes going, mixing in some warmer air down to sea level. you've got 40s and 50s. look at san jose, actually 39 degrees, where the winds are light. chilly this morning. everybody going to see sunshine today, as you see high pressure building in from the west. quick check of your temperatures. notice as we go through the day, even into tomorrow, we're looking at pretty mild temperatures during the afternoon. we're going to see low to mid-60s around the bay area today. warmest places santa rosa and fairfield. tomorrow a few extra clouds. second half of the week, 60s and 70s in the forecast. from dry seven-day forecast, at least through next saturday. >> thanks, rob. did you feel it this morning? new this morning, a small earthquake shook the south bay and east bay while many people were still sleeping. i know i slept through it. the 3.0 magnitude quake struck around fremont around 2:00 this morning.

there are no reports of damage. just a few rattled nerves. now, to a developing story in the search for east bay tourist missing in south america. the east bay couple was last seen in peru almost a month ago. this morning family and friends of 25-year-old garrett hand and 27-year-old jamie neil say they're getting more concerned by the hour. neill's co-workers say she spent months planning a cycling trip through south america. the couple left in november for the five-month adventure and had been chronicling their trip on facebook. but the posts stopped on january 25th and the two have not been heard from since. everyone who knows the couple is extremely worried. earlier this month, the state department issued a travel warning about a group planning to kidnap american tourists in the region around kusco. >> i'm fearful that something

has happened. and it's not likely that -- it's not as likely they're just out on an excursion away from internet access. they had been using the internet and skype and facebook, you know, all that stuff to stay in contact. and that contact has ceased. >> jamie neal's boss posted fliers on facebook and online travel groups in hopes of finding the couple safe. the couple's families are in contact with the authorities in peru and the usa embassy as well. a lead investigator now his own brother, the strange twist in the case against oscar pistorius. his brother also charged in the death of a woman. all the day's news, and the rest of your weekend forecast at 7:00.

it puts musicians, including big celebrity musicians in hospital rooms. one on one performances and in this case young patients at children's hospitals. i'll tell you more about that many canning up. looking forward to it. first a final check of the weather for us. >> cleared out nicely in new york city, that's for sure. new england is still dealing with some snow, although it's more of a wintery mix right now. we will see more or less the snowfall overnight. two to three inches possible. it's all about denver. three to six inches of snow in denver. and it is moving into the plains states. we also have the potential for some stronger storms today dn t out ahead of th cold front. and more blizzard weather in kansas. that's the second time in just a week. we are looking at several inches of snow, perhaps another foot through kansas and into northern missouri. then down through the gulf coast states severe weather is possible. heavy downpours, strong

thunderstorms. that will move to the southeast as we go into tomorrow. in effect most of the middle and southeast of the country as we go into early next week. that is another big storm. meanwhile, in the northeast, temperatures will be more seasonable as we start to finish off february and begin march. it looks like temperatures should get back into the mid-40s through most of early next week at least. we will start to . a peek out the window shows leaves blowing on by right now. we've got the winds out of the north. and at times northeast around san mateo. 10 to 25 miles per hour. higher gusts in the hill tops. places like san francisco and oakland near 50. everywhere else around the bay mid-60s for highs. warmer temperatures around santa rosa and fairfield. second half of the week looks warmer. and i'm excited to just say happy birthday to a set of

cherish forever. >> to be back in the area where it was taken, being with my youngest son, my friend and my buddy, it's great to see him growing into the man he is. >> where is the hair? that's what was going through my mind. looking at the picture, body is still pretty much there. where is the hair? to be in that position more than five minutes now hurts. when are you something years old. >> at my age, you have to bring some of the past into the present and give me hope for the future. ♪ we are family >> i picked a picture of my mom and my older sister whitney and myself at white's park. i have since learned its white park in cocker, new hampshire. we would come ice skating here when we would visit my grandparents. >> i cracked up. i have that exact photo in my office. it's been there 20 years. i always loved the picture of

the three of us, and erica's cheeks and dimples. that was her. definitely always smiling and laughing. >> it wasn't just a part of my childho childhood, part of my sister's, my mom's, even my grandfather's. >> i brought an old photo of white park when i was a child. i'm guessing probably 3 years old. in concord, it has a special place in my heart. >> a wonderful surprise to come back, and it's -- i mean, basically it brings back a lot of childhood memories. >> looking at the picture, it made me smile in the way a certain smell or something that you recognize from your childhood makes you smile. it was funny to stand on the ice, get all dressed up. >> i remember mom's hat and her scarf. i don't know if i blocked it out, but i don't remember having this jacket as a child. >> i didn't feel like i was 5. once we felt on the ice and none of us fell i much better. >> the best part for me was getting spend time with my mom and my sister.

♪ one love one heart >> this has always been my favorite picture. to me this was the quintessential picture of my upbringing. how i remember jamaica. sun beating down on me, in the middle of the afternoon, lush garden, it's quiet. >> that day, we were really fooling around in the garden and having fun. when she got up and climbed onto the table, i thought it was a great picture. she always loved to dress up if somebody had something on, she wanted it. i would wear a scarf, she wanted to wear a scarf. >> like a little baby. >> mom. >> that's exactly the same. >> the garden has been amazing in letting us recreate this fantastic scene. >> i think that was one of her favorites. she did like to wear it a lot. she got a kick of sitting on the table and having me take those pictures. she thought it was fun.

she was a very happy little girl. loved to play, loved to get attention. >> there is nothing better than being able to bring your mom into your world. my mom thinks i wear to a bonnett to all of my shoots and i have to correct her, but besides that, i want her to be proud of the work i do. so this was sweet to spend the day with her. >> wow. >> they were great. we have to give a big thanks to our wardrobe department who put all of those together. >> made dylan's dress. >> amazing. >> i'm keeping my high tops, by the way. >> you're keeping your head scarf. >> i'm wearing it next weekend. look for it right there. >> not easy. first i thought we'll just do the same pose, but your body changes. >> and you are so much taller, the background doesn't fit in. two. three. my credit card rewards are easy to remember
