their grief for lives lost. for the record this marks the first time in the department's history an officer has been killed in the line of duty. here's the story. it is with deep, deep sadness that i stand before you this evening to talk about the death of my two officers. >> reporter: 28-year-old sergeant bookbaker and detective elizabeth butler were shot and killed in the line of duty. police chief vogel called baker a longtime friend and mentor. >> i have known both officers for a long time. there aren't words to describe how i feel personally about this and how my department is reacting. >> reporter: according to reports they were investigating a sexual assault case on branson avenue. at some point they got into a fight with the suspect. both officers were hit by shots fired. minutes later detectives found

him on another street. gunfire broke out again. goulet was killed. hillary bryant said her city is in deep mourning. >> it has rocked our community to our foundation. >> reporter: chief vogel said his concern is making sure officers get the support they need during this difficult time. >> this is the darkest day in the history of the department. >> detective butler is survived by her partner and two young boys. sergeant baker leaves behind a wife, two daughters and a son who works for the department as a community service officer. the santa cruz police department holding a news conference to update the on going investigation that will happen at 11:30. >> the suspect was killed in the gun fight. 35-year-old jeremy goulet. report ohedly in 2008 he was found guilty in portland of

peeping at a woman as she showered. he was convicted of carrying a gun without a permit last friday. the sentinel said he was arrested by police for disorderly conduct. an employee of a local coffee shop told the paper goulet was fired saturday from his job after he broke into a co-worker's home friday night and tried to sexually assault her. >> as for the gun fight it happened on a quiet neighborhood surrounded by several preschools. we had the chance to talk to a neighbor who recorded the drama unfolding in front of his home. thomas todd arrived home an a hour earlier when he said police suddenly stormed his street. >> it sounded like the fourth of july. you know, it was six or seven seconds of, i guess, 70 to 80 gunshots. then everything went quiet. then a bunch of police officers were yelling and trying to coordinate position. >> what a terrifying scene

on so has been arrested several times on charges including prostitution, possession of a stolen vehicle and grand larceny. as for amare harris the las vegas review journal is reporting there is a chance he could be out of the country. the journal looked at his schedule for the month of february on twitter. he planned to leave for paris the night of the shooting and then london. his account has been deleted. >> nearly,000 people gathering to witness history. we have a live look where the pope addressed the very large crowd for the last time a little over an hour ago. the pontiff will be stepping down tomorrow. he is the first pope -- we'll

francisco, the approach off the bay bridge. smooth drive. overnight construction at the 80-101 interchange. we'll zoom in. this is 15 ath and wowona. overnight water main break and a bunch of water there at the intersection. it doesn't sound like it is affecting service or the station itself even though it's only a couple blocks away. we'll get you video coming up. it's spectacular-looking. back to you. >> it's 4:40. the passenger jet could take off soon. the f.a.a. will allow boeing to hold test flights as early as next week. this will let boeing make fixeses to the lithium batteries which forced airlines to ground the plane. an international probe found the battery caused several fires aboard 787s last month. >> we learned thatle millions of dollars could be spent on a grand opening bash for the new bay bridge.

the billionaire bought island air yesterday. details of the deal aren't being disclosed. you will remember in june perhaps ellison purchased 97% of the island of lanai. island air has five flight there is a day. convenient. >> if you're going to buy a hawaiian island it makes sense to buy an airline. nice work, larry. apple shareholders meeting in a few hours deciding what to do with the company's $137 billion in cash. brian shactman has details on the story and a of course he brings us a look at how futures are trading this morning. brian good morning. >> thanks, jon. apple could buy one, too. stock futures right now are crawling back to even or slightly positive. they have been lower for most of the morning. stocks rebounded yesterday. the stocks recovering more than

half of monday's losses thanks to better than expected houszing data. today we get durable goods and earnings from target which came out and were better than expected. ben bernanke is on capitol hill again today testifying about the economy. the dow rose 115 points to 13,900. the nasdaq went to 3129. apple holding its annual shareholders meeting at the headquarters. at the top of the agenda what the iphone maker could do with its $137 billion in cash. that's been in the headlines after a hedge fund manager challenged the company to return more of the money to sar holders. other measures include requiring apple's top executive to hold stock until retirement and creating a committee to examine human rights issues with a focus on some of the dealings in china. back to you.

slopes. we'll look at your tahoe forecast coming up. temperatures tumble monday into tuesday. we bring in the rain. looks like late tuesday into wednesday and thursday of next week. that wet pattern returns. these great days are short lived. back to you, marla and jon. >> thank you very much. happening now parts of a college in south carolina remain on lock down as police search for a gunman who shot and killed a student outside a residence hall at coastal carolina university around 7:30 last night. the campus is 15 miles west of myrtle beach. police say the suspect took off in a car but the university's residence halls do remain on lockdown as a precaution. school officials say classes will be scheduled and go off a today normal as usual. >> 4:49. authorities in egypt suspended hot air balloon flights while investigators determine what causeded a fiery crash tuesday

morning. a balloon caught fire midair and plunged to the ground near the ancient city of luxor killing 19 tourists on board. the pilot and a british tourist were the only survivors. aviation officials say the balloon was inspected and the pilot may be to blame for the crash. >> the west sacramento police officer accused of raping women while he was on duty is set to appear in court for the first time this afternoon. sergio alvarez charged with 35 counts including kidnapping, sexual assault and burglary. he would pull women over while on a patrol and assault them. at least six victims have been identified. he was arrested and fired this week after a five-month investigation. >> hayward will have a new place to honor the lives of children killed by violence in the city. gail steele is donating a statue

"today in the bay's" bob riddell is live at the scene in santa cruz where investigators have been processing evidence all night long. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, marla. it doesn't give us any indication as far as when they will be finished. santa cruz fire department has been assisting by providing light on the scene. ten minutes ago investigators did remove what looked like a black suv from the scene. it could be possible given the fact that the santa cruz fire department is showing their lights and wrapping up this part of the investigation. police will will hold a news conference to update us on the shooting yesterday. this is a day that the santa cruz police chief calls the darkest day in the history of the police department. this is the first time they have lost officers in the line of duty. sergeant lauren baker, 28 years with the force leaves behind a wife, two daughters and
