helping the community. >> i'm feeling kind of sad because, well, it wasn't even their fault. they just thought they were going to be on an everyday call. >> reporter: as the reality of losing two officers sinks in, santa cruz is coming together to grieve. >> they take care of us. this is our time to wrap our hands and arms around them as well. >> that was jean elie reporting. jeremy goulet had a troubled past and with his own family. he texted his twin brother minutes after he killed them saying, quote, i'm in trouble. i love you. he described his son as a ticking time bomb. in 2007, he was caught filming an oregon woman in the shower. he told us he's been living in fear ever since he was released. >> a guy that could have come back. so it's always been in the back of my mind that he could hurt my family. it's really crazy. you hear on tv all the time people getting away with things.

this is just one of those things that hits home because someone got away with something that was pretty bad, only to commit something worse. >> danny thomas bit off part of his ear in that fight. he moved from portland to vancouver after goulet was acquitted and released in 2008. he says he constantly searched the internet for information about him. his father said the incident engaged his son, souring him on the justice system. he calls the killing of the two sfsh officers unforgivable. he added, "my heart goes out to the families of those officers, but i'm grieving, too. we loved him." visit nbcbayarea.com to learn more about the officers including how to help their families. 4:36. new details in a deadly shooting that happened on the campus of a san leandro elementary school. the san francisco chronicle repor reports tahir randall shot

foster after foster refused to make good on a $5 bet. the two were reportedly playing a late-night dice game on the grounds of hillside elementary school on february 13th. randall is charged with murder and is being held without bail. investigators are still looking for two other men in connection with this case. after public outcry from parents in brentwood, the school board last night fired its superintendent, merrill grant. the vote comes a week after the board placed grant on administrative leave for his handling of an incident involving special education teacher deana holder. holder was convicted of kicking a 5-year-old student with autism back in 2010 but allowed to continue teaching. the district also says it is now taking disciplinary actions against three other district employees. final day of february, we made it. good morning to you. spring is in the air. >> it is here. it is here. >> it is gorgeous outside. we thank you so much for this gorgeous forecast. >> and you're welcome. but when the weather turns cold, you can blame mother nature. thank her in that case.

right here on the flat section. over toward the peninsula maps. how people are approaching 101 from 92. still no problems there. a little flashing light session here over at 92 westbound. just off of 280. at the highway 35, the interchange just off of 280, that had a crash car went up a hillside there as well. doing final paperwork, clearing the scene. this is not the skyline interchange which is a little further to the west. this will be cleared hopefully in the next few minutes. west 80 coming out of hercules. it's near commute direction. sounds like there's debris and maybe a car on the side of the road. we see some slowing eastbound, but westbound marked with your arrow, that's the direction we're watching. and looking at oakland, 880 past the coliseum, just seconds ago, we had a tap of the brake. that means they are clearing the crews north of 66 heading up toward fruitville, we'll watch as crews start to clear there as well. back to you. it is 4:39. and sergei's slipup. the comments from the google co-founder that has people

welcome back. giving you a live look at like city, san francisco international airport which stands to get hurt if the sequester happens, if -- we are now just one day away from $85 billion in automatic spending cuts kicking in. and there's no sign of compromise on capitol hill. in a last-ditch effort to reach a deal, the president will meet with congressional leaders at the white house tomorrow. meanwhile, today, the senate is expected to vote on two possible alternatives. republicans want the president to decide which programs would get cut while democrats are pushing a 30% tax on millionaires. neither is expected to pass. the public is bracing to lose that $85 billion, which will affect everything from meals on wheels to airports to border security. >> go ahead and give it to us. we're adults. we're big people. this is a big country. we can take whatever comes our way. >> the president has until 11:59

tomorrow night to sign off on the cuts. white house officials say he will not do so until after that meeting with congressional leaders. speaking of cuts, oakland is doing away with its adult education program. school board approved the move last night which is in accordance with jerry brown's budget plan to shift adult education programs from k-12 schools to community colleges. the board's vote affects hundreds of students and employees but will save the district an estimated $1 million. google's co-founder, sergey brin, is getting heat for comments he made about smartphones. during a presentation at the ted conference in long beach yesterday, bryn called smartphones emasculating and said, quote, you're just rubbing a featureless piece of glass, end quote. now, bryn made the comments in an effort to showcase google's new glasses which he's wearing. which can connect to the internet, snap photos and also record video. pandora is closing its free music box. just a little bit. the internet radio site says it

lion. we'll take you through your full forecast coming up. right now i'm going to send it back to you guys. >> thanks so much. 4:46. investigators are looking into the cause of a deadly house explosion in michigan. the blast killed a 58-year-old man at a home just outside detroit. the explosion shattered windows on dozens of other nearby homes and cars. utility crews had been working in this area earlier in the day, and investigators think natural gas might have played a role in that blast. the man known as stormin' norman will be buried today. funeral services will be held for general norman schwarzkopf. the 78-year-old died in december from complications from pneumonia. he's best known for thinks no-nonsense approach during the first gulf war. schwarzkopf will be buried at u.s. military academy at west point. his family delayed the funeral due to potential conflicts with the presidential inauguration and martin luther king jr. day events. the woman at the center of one of the most shocking

anti-smoking campaigns of all time has died. the family of debbie austin says she died of cancer on friday at a hospital in southern california. austin first appeared on tv in 1996, smoking a cigarette through a hole in her throat. the anti-smoking ad was designed to illustrate just how addicting smoking can be. austin started smoking at age 13 and never quit. her larynx was removed when she was 42 to allow her to breathe. debbie austin was 62 years old. meanwhile, sacramento lawmakers considering a new law that would prohibit smoking in all multifamily homes. the measure would prohibit smoking cigarettes, cigars or pipes and condos, duplexes and apartments. new this morning, boeing says it has come up with a permanent fix for its 787 dreamliner. the company's president made the announcement in tokyo this morning.

has been covering the patrols and answering calls on behalf of the police department to give the officers here in santa cruz a little breathing room after what happened tuesday afternoon. today p.d. will go back out onto the streets and resume their normal duties. last night the community joined the department at a vigil to mourn the losses of officers elizabeth butler and sergeant lauren "butch" baker. some even took the time to write letters of support to those families. now, there are new details about the suspect, jeremy goulet. just after he shot and killed the two officers tuesday afternoon, goulet texted his twin brother, "i'm in big trouble, i love you." law enforcement cornered him a short time later. as you can hear in this exclusive cell phone video, they fired many rounds hitting and killing him. we have since heard from his father who described his son as having been a ticking time bomb. and we've heard from another man who had a run-in with goulet years back. in 2007, danny thomas fought goulet after catching him taped

his girlfriend in the shower in portland. when goulet was acquitted, thomas ended up moving to vancouver out of fear goulet would retaliate against him. >> a guy that could come back. it's always been in the back of my mind that he could hurt my family. >> reporter: goulet had sworn he'd never go back to the jail. when officers visited his home tuesday afternoon because he had been breaking into a woman's home. he shot and killed sergeant baker and detective butler on his doorstep. both officers were veterans of this police department who leave behind families. back out here live on the steps of the police headquarters, if there's any measure of how much support there is from the community for this department, you can judge it by just the number of flowers and candles that have been placed out here on the front steps. a little later this morning at 11:30, the police department will be holding a news conference to update us on the latest in the investigation. we could also get information as far as when the memorials for os
