pavilion in san jose. they had to move it over the hill to accommodate the thousands of people who want to pay their respects. the ceremony will start at noon on thursday. in the meantime, santa cruz county investigators are looking for this woman, teresa lam johnson, investigators say she may know why the suspect jeremy goulet shot and killed the manufactu police officers. detectives believe johnson is living in one of the homeless camps in santa cruz and a homeless woman at one of those camps says she recognizes the woman but does not know her personally. she's urging johnson to talk to detectives. >> and just say the last conversation that you had with him before these things happened because a lot of people are under stress. >> investigators say they would like to speak with johnson about goulet's background and social history. from santa cruz to sonoma county where investigators are trying to figure out why a sheriff's deputy shot and killed

a suspected kidnapper. it all unfolded just before 11:00 on thursday night when a woman called san rafael police to say her friend was texting her saying she had been kidnapped. the friend was able to text her a description of the car she was in and the direction her alleged kidnapper was heading. the sonoma county sheriff's deputy spotted the car in santa rosa and that's when a chase started. when the car reached highway 116 near guerneville, it crashed on an embankment. an inn keeper near highway 116 said the violence doesn't surprise him. >> we live in a violent society it's not getting any better. >> deputies were able to help the woman out of the car and fortunately for her she was not seriously hurt. new this morning, one man is dead and a juvenile is in critical condition this morning after shooting in east palo alto, it happened in the backyard of a home near university avenue around 6:00

last night. when officers arrived they found a 22-year-old man dead shot from a -- dead from a gunshot wound to his chest. they also found another victim in the backyard who they only describe as a juvenile male. he was also shot and he was rushed to the hospital where he is recovering this morning. investigators say the victims were shot after an argument with the suspects who then took off. this morning oakland city leaders are calling the security changes they made to last night's first friday event a success. thousands of people showed up for the festival proving that the celebration can continue despite a deadly shooting last month. jean elle has the story. >> paul: a call for peace at the first friday arts festival in oakland after a deadly shooting following last month's event. >> it really impacted the way the people brought themselves tonight. >> paul: the violence didn't scare people away. art lovers crowded into the gallery, rock paper scissors. the creative spirit is thriving

meet our untimely demise. very unfortunate for someone of his age. >> if you got love. >> paul: this community is hoping one tragedy will prevent others. jean elle, "today in the bay." and in santa clara county a gun buyback program meant to get guns off the street. the sheriff's department will collect guns between 10:00 this morning and 2:00 this afternoon. people who turn in a handgun, a rifle, or a shotgun will receive $100. anyone who turns in an assault weapon will receive $200. law enforcement asks us to remind you that guns will be exchanged no questions asked. the santa clara county board of supervisors is mulling over how to replace george shirakawa. he resigned after prosecutors filed 12 criminal charges against him. they say he used more than $95,000 in public money and campaign contributions at casinos. shirakawa spoke exclusively with

nbc bay area and says he will plead guilty to the charges. he is also asking his constituents for forgiveness, blaming a gambling addiction and depression for his missteps. >> we'll argue that he should be sent to jail for a substantial period of time. up to one year. he will be legally barred forever from holding elected office in the state of california. >> now, the board of supervisors has 45 days to either appoint a replacement or call for a special election to replace him. they scammed senior citizens out of more than $200,000 and this morning a san jose businessman and his assistant are paying for the crimes they committed. a judge sentenced 53-year-old davey ba ngo to prison and stephanie le to six months in jail. they worked for the concerned members committee. investigators say they two pocket investments meant to cover families when their elderly relatives died.

[ male announcer ] love chex? connect with us on facebook. and now an update on that breaking news story in san francisco's visitation valley where, again, investigators are working an officer-involved shooting near the intersection of bayshore boulevard and hester avenue alongside highway 101. want to make a quick correction. we said it was a san francisco police officer who pulled the trigger. it was, in fact, a daly city police officer. daly city officers were trying to pull over the driver of a car and that person then fled on foot. there was a short chase. and then there was a shooting.

right now investigators are trying to figure out what led to that. we will continue to follow this story for you throughout the morning. the city of pacifica will be testing its water quality today after a day yesterday in which a warning was issued to beachgoers to stay out of the water because of a sewage spill. it started early yesterday morning when a sewer pipe broke near the intersection of highway 1 and fastler avenue. crews say 6,000 gallons of waste spilled out. they contained most of it, but 1,800 gallons managed to make it to the ocean making for unsafe swimming conditions to say the least. coming up on "today in the bay" the world's best athletes are braving the chill 80 bay area weekend for one of the most grueling triathlons in the world, escape from alcatraz. we have a sneak peek of the race. the view outside right now, you notice we have mid and high level clouds coming in hinting at weather changes for the weekend. how much rain are we expecting?

it is time to play ball. today hunters of petaluma little leaguers with dreams of achieving the same fame the all-stars did last season will hit the field. some of them wearing some bling. a world little league series ring. they kicked off the season with a party at pinkie's pizza. you might remember last year the team finished third in the little league world series in pennsylvania. the boys say they are anxious to get back out on the field. >> when we were there i think we were ready to come home because we'd been there for a month but now that we're home, we want to go back. >> kids will be down there to encourage the next season's kids and the future upcoming baseball stars of petaluma. >> the league says sign-ups for this season are way up. in just 24 hours, thousands

of the world's best athletes will flock to san francisco to take part in the annual escape from alcatraz triathlon, and we caught up some of the athletes that will participate in the famed race. >> paul: in just about 24 hours from now tomorrow morning you'll have 2,000 professional and amateur athletes jumping off a perfectly safe boat out there in the cold waters of the bay to swim 1 1/2 miles from alcatraz to shore where we're at right now, we're in the parking lot at the st. francis yacht club between the club and christie field, coming in to shore, taking a half-mile warm-up run, they need that because the water's so cold to marina green, hopping on their bicycles for an 18-mile ride, followed by a leisurely 8-mile run, is it really that leisurely? probably not. eric, 25th year competing in the event, matt, former winner himself, 33rd annual competition. what is the most difficult part of this competition? >> the hardest part is

definitely the swim just because it's so cold. the water will be 52 degrees. it could be currents, you know, choppy, sharks, it's a big challenge. depending on the currents, it could be 22-minute swim or a 35-minute swim for me so, you know, the currents can be quite strong and, you know, once you get through the swim the rest of the race is still hard as well but it's a lot of fun. >> paul: is that one reason why this event attracts athletes from all because of the swim from alcatraz or are there other features of the event? >> because the race has been moved up to march instead of june because of america's cup we were amazed what are the numbers like this year and we've sold out with 2,000 people, and it's a bucket list type of triathlon, whether it's your first time or me your 25th time, i just can't get enough of it. the swim is just mentally challenging. every triathlon's challenging. you got to swim, bike, and run, but to have the temperature, the marine life, the currents, the

iconic golden gate bridge, the hills of san francisco and the streets of san francisco, the sand ladder out there at baker beach, all three of the disciplines have some challenges, but the swim is mentally tough. >> paul: matty, you'll be shooting for roughly a two-hour time, somewhere in that time zone? >> around about that, it depends on the current and the weather, but around two hours. >> paul: you can see them arriving on shore after jumping in the water 7:30 sunday morning, he'll be arriving here on shore tee pending on how long it takes and the arrival time for everything would be around 9:30 at marina greens, if you want to see the finish, 9:30 when the athletes start coming in from the 33rd annual escape from alcatraz triathlon. don't know if you've been noticing, rob mayeda has been getting stronger and healthier, is the triathlon next, rob? >> swimming with sharks not part of the equation. water temperature, low 50s,

that's a little bit too cold for my tastes. i'll have to try a triathlon in hawaii. we'll see breezy conditions and maybe a few showers out there. this morning there's a pattern change under way. a live view from san jose. mid and high level clouds coming in with a little bit of a tropical feel. we'll show you why it feels more muggy this afternoon compared to yesterday coming up in a moment. right now, 51 in san jose. 53 in san francisco. pretty close to the water temperature in the bay in those low 50s currently this morning. the wind not much of a factor now. but as our weather system races by, during the day tomorrow, i think you're going to see the sea breeze pick up which will lead to some cooling to wrap up the weekend. some of our weather headlines today includes obviously the pollen count which has just skyrocketed, early season the allergies cranking up due to the dry conditions and the pollen thick enough you have to wipe your windshield in a few spots. any rain we get would help that equation. we'll see a chance of a few showers as the moisture thickens up during the day.

but look at the coast, a long-period, high-energy swell arrive, a chance to see some waves this weekend. use caution out there this weekend. a few showers tonight, a better chance perhaps of some showers in our hilltops tomorrow. all right, here you can see the clouds coming in from the south and west, tapping into the subtropical jet stream off to south. here's the weather system off to the west and as things come together the weather system itself will add more lift to the moisture as it starts to push towards the bay area, the water vapor view showing you the increase of the midst level moisture. the futurecast really doesn't show much besides cloud cover but, again, the subtropical moisture in play there's a chance of seeing a few scattered showers at times as we go through the afternoon and then as we head into tomorrow, notice around the north bay and some of these hilltops into sunday afternoon you're seeing a few showers there but the main event for the rain will come in tuesday night and wednesday. that will be a stronger system with a little more moisture to work with that will lead to much cooler changes toward the middle of next week.

today close to 70. more likely we'll see 60s today. the clouds will block out the sun at times and any raindrops that evaporate before they reach the ground will cool the atmosphere off, that's what happens when you go from liquid droplets to water vapor, it cools things off a little bit. we'll see more of that this afternoon. 60 degrees in san francisco. mid-60s around the north bay so we'll bring in the chance of a few showers and in between systems monday looks like a dry break, but we're going to see the winds pick up into tuesday and into wednesday, well, we've had a couple of days with temperatures in the 70s. here's a reality check coming for the middle part of the week. hifes in the 50s. probably up to an inch of rain in a few spots with that system, so that's a reminder we're still in winter and a foot of snow in the sierra. we can use it. it's been quite dry. that will certainly help going towards the middle part of the week. >> you don't want to swim with sharks baby! >> i will watch the sharks play hockey, but i'm not going to swim with the sharks. the founder of room to read shows us how he put millions of books into the hands of impoverished children around the

he took the money and ran but where he ran to is remarkable. a high tech multimillionaire quit his job and is now traveling the world to help children and how he's doing it is getting the attention of executives and children all around the world. our own raj mathai has "the interview" with john woods. >> like many multimillionaires, he traveled the world, but what he sees is different. john wood sees the hopes and dreams of children, many of whole were hopeless before his helping hand. the former microsoft executive who struck it rich in the 1990s is striking again. >> i used to go to the security conferences and it would drive me crazy because all the people would be talking blah blah blah blah about the problem, the problem, the problem. stop talking about the problem.

act on the solution. >> and the solution is a san francisco-based nonprofit called room to read. its goal is simple, educate kids through books. conversation with bill gates when he left, did you have one? i know you talked to him since, but at the time you left, what did he say? >> i don't know that bill even noticed that i left i'd like to believe that, you know, they were wearing black armbands the day i left microsoft. but we have a great relationship with the gates foundation. i was very fortunate five years ago i remember driving down 280 and i was doing the thing you're not supposed to do checking your mail while you are driving, there was a mail from melinda gates, and, oh, great, i've got to read this, i've been reading great things about room to read. >> and you talked about how important the silicon valley and the bay area is to you in terms of financial need. would you be able to survive without the investors here? >> we would have never gotten room to read off the ground were

it not for the support of the bay area and silicon valley, a wonderful environment for start-ups and social volunteers. and i remember being with don valentine, the founder of sequoia capital, $250 per girl per year is all it costs room to read to help a girl from a poor family get educated? he said, this is the biggest no-brainer in philanthropy and their family foundation then underwrote the launch. there was only 400 girls to start with but talk about things growing rapidly and the hockey stick growth we have now over 20,000 girls in the program and the all-in cost today remains $250 per girl per year, you want to talk about a high roi, that's it. >> what drives you here? why so passionate? is there someone in your life that made you pay it forward? >> i got lucky. you know, i think i was lucky to be born in the united states of america. in a small town with a good public school. it wasn't perfect, but it was

pretty dang good and my parents always taught me it doesn't make you a good person if you have a lot of money, what makes you a good person is what you do with it. so, as i travel through the developing world and saw all these kids that were asking me for pencils and pens and i saw empty libraries and schools burned down by the khmer rouge and not rebuilt, what kind of person would i be if i just retired to the golf course or started to thinking about how would i feather my own nest more. >> you brought up the numbers, 15,000 libraries, 1,600 schools built all over africa and southeast asia, 12 million books drcted. you're smiling. you've done a lot. >> well, i think back to my own childhood of reading "clifford the big red dog," "hop on pop" or dr. seuss stories, not that we've distributed over 12 million books but 8 million are books in the mother tongue. when room to read started i was perhaps a bit naive. i thought it would be good

the haziness that it's going to make things feel a little muggy today and there's rain in the forecast. thanks for joining us, i'm kris sanchez along with rob mayeda who says not enough rain to get you out of your outside chores. >> never enough rain to stop that it seems like. let's show you the temperatures out there this morning. we've got mid to high-level clouds coming in, 40s and 50s outside and a little bit of a southerly flow which is starting to kind of keep our temperatures mild to start the morning and speaking of clouds, notice where they're coming from. you've got a weather system off to the west but pulling up tropical moisture out of the south and as the moisture thickens up during the day don't be surprised to find a sprinkle or two outside with the sun filtered and the veiled sun at times. look at the numbers by noon, close to 70 perhaps around san jose both the sprinkles in the air not all of them hitting the ground that helps to cool things off below as we get that evaporative cooling during the day, so it looks like mostly 60s for highs today, chances of showers actually increasing tonight as that system sweeps through, we'll show you the

impact on the rest of the weekend forecast in a few minutes. >> sounds good. queen elizabeth will spend the weekend resting instead of attending a military celebration in wales. the 86-year-old queen canceled after coming down with a stomach bug, she'll spend the weekend resting instead. the queen and her husband prince phillip are expected to start a two-day visit to italy next week. the nation is now officially in sequester. president obama signed the order late last night putting into effect $85 billion in federal budget cuts. a last-ditch meeting to come up with a budget plan went nowhere yesterday. but republicans say these automatic cuts will not hurt the economy, emphasizing that $85 billion is only 2% of government spending. the president obama said sequester will be painful adding that it will result in hunters of thousands of jobs lost and reduced services. >> at a time when our businesses are finally gaining some

traction hiring new workers, bringing jobs back to america, the last thing washington should do is to get in their way. that's what these cuts to education and research and defense will do. it's unnecessary. >> furlough notices have already gone out to federal workers and schools may have to close early. another round of cuts could come later this month. the air force academy is getting its first female leader. defense secretary chuck hagel announced major general michelle johnson would be the school's 19th superintendent, the first woman to hold the job. johnson who graduated from the air force academy in 1981 is currently nato's deputy chief of staff for operations and intelligence. the u.s. senate must approve a promotion for johnson to three-star lieutenant general which is the rank required to become superintendent. love that shot. rescue efforts will continue this morning in florida to try to find a man who was swallowed by a large sinkhole inside his

own home. the 30-foot wide sinkhole opened up in the bedroom near this home in tampa swallowing up everything in the room including 36-year-old jeffrey bush who was in bed at the time. his brother jeremy tried to save him. >> so i jumped in the hole to try to get him out and i couldn't get him, i thought i could hear him screaming for me and hollering for me to help him, i couldn't do that. >> a sheriff's deputy was able to save jeffrey but could not find jeremy. they are trying to figure out if crews can safely enter the home. this morning lawyers for the colorado theater shooting suspect are confirming that they are considering a not guilty plea by reason of insanity. james holmes is scheduled to enter a plea later this month. the 25-year-old is accused of killing 12 people and injuring 70 others during a movie theater shooting last july. defense attorneys admit that the insanity plea could hurt their

client because it requires the disclosure of potentially incriminating mental records. happening now, firefighters in southern california continue to gain ground on a wildfire burning in riverside county about 60 miles east of l.a. crews say they expect to have the 300-acre fire fully contained later today. officials say the blaze damaged one home but as of now there are no reports of injuries. and we continue our coverage of breaking news out of san francisco this morning. where san francisco police are confirming that an officer from daly city shot and killed a suspect. it happened in the city's visitation valley neighborhood near the intersection of bayshore boulevard and hester avenue alongside highway 101. this is a live look at the scene there now where investigators are still combing for evidence. san francisco police say what happened is daly city officers were trying to pull over the driver of a car when that suspect ditched the car and took off on foot. a short chase followed. and one officer reportedly shot

the suspect. no officers were hurt in this altercation. we will continue to follow this story for you throughout the morning and bring you more information as we get it or tonight at 5:00 and 6:00. santa cruz police are back on patrol just two days -- or rather, days after the loss of two officers who were killed in the line of duty. the first officers from that department in 150 years. this morning they are looking for a woman who could have vital information about the man who shot and killed the officers, butch baker and elizabeth butler, finding her could be a challenge. >> i think it's very honorable of them to be back in action. >> paul: santa cruz police are back out on patrol, friday night on the streets of downtown santa cruz, people took notice. >> obviously the deaths are incredibly tragic, so i think it's just admirable for them to be out and still dedicated to protecting our community. ♪

about. raindrops perhaps later on tonight. bpa could be linked to a dramatic rise in the number of children with asthma over the past 30 years. bpa or bisphenol-a is a component of plastic found in canned goods, store receipts and until recently baby bottles. columbia researchers tracked bpa levels in the urine of more than 500 young children. what they found is even low exposure to bpa after birth was associated with higher rates of wheezing and asthma by the age of 5. get ready for more changes to your facebook page. the social networking giant is expected to unveil a new redesigned news feed next thursday. there's some speculation that facebook may divide photo and nonphoto posts or perhaps launch a new mobile news feed. no matter what the changes, there is sure to be some backlash from users. polyis suffering a setback

today we're watching clouds of a different sort. we're seeing mid and high-level clouds streaming in from the southwest. and the temperatures pretty mild, 40s and 50s outside. no 30s out there. this is kind of the by-product of the warm days we've had over the last couple of days. a warm, dry air mass over the bay area, but that's about to change as clouds continue to fill in during the day and winds will pick up by this time tomorrow. not much wind outside, calm or light winds and not much happening in the weather until later today. we'll see increasing clouds and a chance of a few sprinkles and the subtropical moisture increasing during the day, you may notice it's a little bit more muggy outside. and also word of caution out on the coast as we get some high-energy, long-period swells starting to reach the coast so look out for some sneaker waves on the coastline this weekend and the chance of showers starting to increase a little bit later today. you can see the source of the clouds coming in from the subtropical jet stream feeding offshore, the two trying to get their act together during the

day and it will lead to mostly cloudy skies especially by this afternoon and notice the increasing midlevel moisture, the lift still offshore tapping into the moisture in the south. this will be the opportunity for seeing a few sprinkles or a few light rain showers at times mainly later today into the day tomorrow. you can see the cloudy skies hour by hour and a few sprinkles or light showers at times possible overnight into sunday. now you are looking at showers there perhaps around the hilltops of the bay area and things shutting down sunday night and after that monday into the first half of tuesday looks dry and then i think we're going to see a better chance of some much-needed rain and sierra snow tuesday night into wednesday. still near 70 in san jose. even with the clouds blocking out the sun at times, mild and a muggy air mass over the bay area. low 70s and some 60s around the tri-valley back over to san francisco, we should see highs in the low to mid-60s into the north bay. more clouds for the weekend and a chance at least of seeing some showers at times and here comes the dry break on into monday and

head coach randy bennett must serve a five-conference game suspension next season and cannot recruit off-campus for a year. >> i will say that, i thought the penalties were harsh. more so than -- like i said, most of the things in this we agreed with the ncaa on. and we've accepted responsibility. there's very little we disagree on. but i do think the penalties, they're more harsh than i expected. >> the gaels have two weeks to appeal the ruling. the warriors, steph curry has been on fire, but the only problem is his hot streak came during a warriors loss. they looked to snap the two--game losing streak in boston last night, curry had 25 points in this one but not enough to push the warriors past the celtics, boston wins 94-86.

the cuisine and the music and kiddie land and how can you resist that and that smiley face? and food for the young mind both in content and literally in name. this morning at montalvo art center in saratoga you can see the stage version of a book on a bunch of shelves right there at your homes, if you give a mouse a cookie come to life through the efforts of the theater works. tickets were going fast. and even though it sounds a story about cookies it's about cause and effect. the effect it has on me, i have cookies on the brain, i'll get some of those as soon as i remind you to join me right here monday through friday for your traffic reports on "today in the bay." ♪ alright, let's go.

"today in the bay" has the happy homecoming. >> reporter: anxious and excited. opie a 2 1/2-month-old pit bull is waiting for a homecoming that almost didn't happen. >> how are you doing? >> reporter: they adopted opie tuesday morning. >> do you remember us? >> reporter: only to get a call the next day. >> they said he was gone, you know, my heart sunk. >> reporter: animal control officers said two guys stole opie right out of his kennel. before allegedly putting him in a bag and jumping the back fence. >> i was really nervous because, well, what if they use him as a bait dog which is kind of a dog that they bait literally have another dog rip apart or were they going to use him later on to have a fighting dog. >> reporter: o'connor thought he'd never see opie again. >> with everything going on in the world we figured he was probably low priority. >> reporter: but the investigation began immediately

well, in honor of dr. seuss' birthday parents and children across the country came together to read across america including me. what's your name? he said my name's lester, i'm as handsome as can be. said the roly poly spider, i got to read to laurelwood elementary school in santa clara, dr. seuss would have turned 99 today. i get to do the same thing on monday at my own kids' school. but now, do we need to say anything else? look at that. we have our friends from pets in need, volunteer lisa simmons is here with five puppies and you are pure evil, i don't know what i did to you in a past life but you are punishing me big time today. tell us about these little guys. >> they just turn eight weeks old this past thursday and they've been fixed and they're ready to go. it's four little females and a little male.

>> and rob's in the pen with the little male and the two little girls that look like twins and i'm holding the one that belongs to teresa one of our directors. she says this one's hers. i just don't know what i would do to pick one of them, they are so cute. you say this has been one of the best fostering experiences that you had. >> it has. and we've fostered so many over the last 20 years or so. they're just an incredible batch of little puppies. they're little terrier mixes. we think they'll get to be about maybe 20, 25 pounds fully grown except maybe the runt, he's very small. >> his sisters are beating up on him pretty good. >> they are. but they're just really nice, nice little puppies. >> and this is the age that, you know, it's good for them to go home with rob. >> absolutely. >> or anybody else. your wife is going to kill you, rob. if you want to find out anything more about these five little guys or five little gals and one guy you can go to petsinneed.org.
