the 18-year-old man shot in this neighborhood. police found him around 10:20 suffering from more than one bullet wound. doctors at valley med tried to save him but he died during emergency surgery a little bit after midnight making him the first person to be murdered in campbell in several years. the last time someone was killed in this town was back in 2007. as far as motive, police are not sure if this was a random act or if vega was targeted or if there was another reason for him being shot and killed but that's part of his investigation as is trying to figure out who committed this crime. reporting live in campbell, bob redell, "today in the bay." it's 6:02. the outpouring of support for santa cruz continues to grow this morning after the death of two of the city's police officers. mourners continue to leave items to honor officers lauren bush baker and elizabeth butler. among the gifts a teddy bear with a purple heart and note reading purple heart is above

and beyo and service beyond the call of duty. a service will be held on thursday at noon at hp pavilion in san jose. there will be a procession from santa cruz to san jose before that memorial. speaking of san jose police, they could end up releasing the identity today of the man who led them on a 20-minute high-speed chase and he ends up dead. this is video of that chase that started about 2:30 saturday afternoon. the chase ends up in south san jose in a neighborhood there where police finally boxed in car in. the man got out of his car and he ran. officers thought he was armed. they opened fire. ultimately killing that man. despite speeds up to 100 miles

an hour, no officers or bystanders were hurt. there was a shooting in sonoma county, san francisco, union city and hayward. in hayward police say the suspect rammed his car into place cruiser during a traffic stop yesterday morning. the driver sped off and crashed nearby. investigators are not sure if that crash contributed to the passenger's death. the driver was arrested. all five shootings are subject to internal reviews and officers involved in these shootings are he main on administrative leave. good morning to you. san francisco police are using every resource available to them to get one of their own guns off the streets this morning. that assault rifle stolen from an unmarked police car over the weekend. the vehicle was parked and secured when someone broke into it and took the ar-15 assault rifle. it's a weapon used by specially trained officers to respond to incidents such as barricaded

suspect. police say they are doing everything they can to recover the weapon. >> that's a wild story there. hopefully they get that thing back soon. 6:04 right now. rob mayeda is telling us a decent start to the day but cloudy out there. >> clouds and maybe some mist in a few spots. some of those low clouds you see right now around san jose and san francisco. 48 in san francisco. 50 in san jose. and we did have those winds coming in off the ocean overnight and look at that into fairfield. southwest at 18. so the ocean air continuing has turned on once again leading to cooler temperatures this afternoon and maybe patchy fog in the north bay visibility dropping off a bit around santa rosa. so right now no storms on the horizon today. tomorrow the system that is spinning here offshore is going to sweep in during tomorrow afternoon which will bring us rain for the tuesday evening commute. but for this morning, areas of low clouds hour by hour by lunchtime we should break out the sunshine. the exception to the rule, hilltops off to the east of san jose around mt. hamilton and

north bay and may see isolated showers through the afternoon. hour by hour, by lunchtime low 60s inland. with winds onshore not going to warm up much. tomorrow a little bit of cooling as more clouds fill in and then rain and thunder on wednesday. tuesday and wednesday look to be the most active days with showers into thursday. and then we'll warm up and clear out. breezy at times for the upcoming weekend. >> folks, we have the backup steadily building at the bay bridge toll plaza. look at this close-up shot. we do see that the third cash lane from bottom of the screen is closed right now and that's causing extra delay over on the left side of the toll plaza. the right side of fastrak lanes is typical backup and you should see metering lights turn on and everyone will fill in every the next 15 minutes. we'll track that and look at the approach to the east shore freeway not a problem marked with arrow. incline and commute direction over toward san francisco side which shows your typical bit of slowing there. we'll get a look also as we

travel toward the tri-valley and you know the holdup over there at 580 is concern. an earlier crash going on westbound 580 your commute direction. the earlier backup was severe. it smoothed out but lengtheneded a bit. cars have moved to the shoulder. no major injuries but three vehicles over there as you approach 680 but that's keeping sunol and pleasanton clearer than they typically are this time of day. through castro valley y and 880 looking nice but hayward showing slowing in northbound side and yellow there heading down toward san mateo bridge. a peek at the bridge on the peninsula side, smooth flow there for 92 and south bay picking up volume. we'll see that second burst kicking in over the next ten minutes. would tell show y we'll show you that coming up. following two breaking stories. in pacifica, reports of a boat in distress. at this hour we don't have a lot of details on this. we have been told a number of different agencies are

responding to this call. "today in the bay's" christie smith is on her way right now and she'll have a live update on this situation as soon as we know more. meantime, in new york city this is just a tragedy. a young baby delivered by c-section after his parents were killed in a horrific car crash this weekend. that poor baby has died. it was announced the baby boy did die. the baby was delivered prematurely after his parents were killed in a hit-and-run crash in new york city over weekend. he was almost two months premature. that couple was being rushed to the hospital in a cab after report of trouble with the baby. to give you perspective on this crash, a bmw slammed right into that cab. that driver got out of the bmw and took off and police right now are still looking for the person driving that bmw. >> breaks your heart. 6:08. new video this morning. an american soldier shot by

just sleeping in that home. it happened on thursday into friday and they've been trying to recover this man's body ever since. they still have not found it. they are hoping once they demolish the home they will find that man's body. >> thank you very much. 6:12 right now. new video in our newsroom of the minutes before an american soldier is shot by south korean police. in this video you can see the car the soldier is allegedly in. police in seoul say they received several emergency calls saturday that two american soldiers were threatening people with an air gun. when officers arrived, the soldiers refused to listen and tried to escape in a waiting car. police then gave chase and they say they opened fire when that car tried to ram them. the driver, a u.s. soldier, was hit in the shoulder. a korean news agency reporting a police officer and two civilians did suffer minor injuries. we're getting a look at the damage left behind after a quake in china.

the 5.5 magnitude quake damaged more than 80,000 homes in southern china yesterday and hurt 30 people. the chinese government says hundreds of rescue workers are on the way to the region to help out. it is 6:13 right now. here's a check of the day's top stories. police investigating the city's first homicide in more than five years in campbell. an 18 year old was walking near the community center when he was shot and killed overnight. he ended up dying at the hospital. right now a manhunt is under way for that gunman. the world's cardinals are at the vatican this morning talking about who will become the next pope. they're talking about the major problems facing the catholic church including the recent priest abuse scandals. and a traffic hazard you do not see every day. how about this. horses running loose on 680 in martinez. this happened overnight. the road was shut down at 2:30 so officers could corral those

horses. they were safely rounded up. they are now in custody of animal control until their animals can be found. we're happy to report no one was injured. the makers of budweiser are fighting back after accusations it is watering down its formula. anheuser-busch has run this advertisement. in response to a number of lawsuits filed last week including one here in the bay area that claims the beer has less alcohol content than is on the label. the company says the lawsuits are completely false. investigators right now wondering why tesla missed a very important deadline with the government. >> financial filings have not been turned in. >> you get a bad grade from investors. tesla says there's an error in the report regarding the way $31 million is classified and it asked for an extension this morning.

$31 million is chicken feed to most companies. not to tesla. investors worry about the cash flow because they spent money on tools and devices to make its model s car. they make the cars fast enough to regenerate that cash pile. i think you may see some gentle criticism of elon musk this morning. some investors worry that he's overextended. he's been running his other company that just sent a capsule to the international space station. so musk does amazing things but there are only 24 hours in a day. we said at the start of the apple/samsung trial this summer this thing would last forever. they'll look for a new set of jurors this morning to recalculate the amount of money samsung is going to have to pay apple after samsung was found guilty of copying the iphone and ipad. over the weekend a half billion was knocked off the jury's

original finding saying they calculated that number incorrectly. samsung would like to get this whole thing thrown out. the whole trial. it wasn't. we'll call this a victory for samsung because they are saving a half billion dollars. >> that's a big v. victory. >> a good start. thank you very much. 6:16 right now. bob redell is back to talk about your monday outlook and we see rain sneaking up the next couple days the. >> this morning misty skies at most in a few spots but tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night we'll get rain, wind and possibly some thundershowers in the mix and some much needed sierra snow. tahoe ski report later this week will look great. 40s and 50s outside right now. 50 in san jose. 48 in san francisco. onshore winds helping to bring in extra moisture off the ocean bringing us low clouds this morning all of the way into solano county to start the day. clearing around midday.

highs today 50s and low 60s and tomorrow it will be the opposite. turning cloudy through the day leading up to some rain by evening and snow levels as low as 3,000 feet by wednesday evening. today clearing except in the higher hilltops of the north bay and around mt. hamilton. clouds will build up with heating of the day. may have isolate showers but tomorrow mostly cloudy by afternoon courtesy of a system here which will bring a cold front across the bay area. looks like for tuesday evening commute so the morning looks fine tomorrow but by tomorrow night 5:00, there goes the cold front through the bay area and scattered showers much cooler air aloft. highs on wednesday low to mid 50s and off and on showers at times. maybe about a quarter inch to half inch of rain for the bay area and that's great news. snow in the sierra midweek and look at the snow levels along highway 50. maybe closer to 3,500 snow levels as colder air sweeps in. chain controls likely in the

sierra beginning tuesday night. around the bay area today, 62 degrees in san jose. low to mid 60s around the tri-valley. nice afternoon after the misty skies start to clear around the east bay and back over to san francisco onshore winds keep things cool around the peninsula. mid 50s for highs and upper 50s at best closer to 60s over to berkeley and oakland. so tomorrow more clouds. winds picking up out of the south. rain comes back in just in time for tuesday evening commute. wednesday not a complete washout. we'll get sunny breaks at times. wednesday into thursday. look at high temperatures. almost 20 degrees cooler than weather we had this weekend and friday we begin to clear and next weekend good pattern here. 60s and 70s coming back as we head toward sunday. mike? >> all right. we have a typical pattern for the bay bridge as well. backup continues to build and as we talked about, now all lanes are filled all of the way back past 880 over crossing making it's way toward grand avenue. not there yet. the toll plaza is in sight. the maps through the area show

you a smoother drive once you get on toward that bay bridge. it's a smooth flow up toward treasure island and slowing in toward san francisco. it's just the morning commute for a monday. happy monday. slowing down through richmond and into berkeley as well for west 80. commute through oakland is moving fine. crews should clear northbound side but the southbound side from 980 down toward 16th they may still have crews there for the next half hour. we're tracking this west 580. commute toward that tri-valley and dublin interchange crash itself is over on the shoulder. may have three vehicles and emergency crews there. we have slowing coming off the area from north first where you see the real slow and the dublin grade right here eastbound 580 we saw some earlier slowdowns there as well but it cleared over the last few and then that's when we see this south 680 down toward sunol start with the build there. in the south bay, smooth flow of traffic. build starting in earnest here 680 to 880 and i saw slowing toward 880 interchange. live look there shows you that traffic coming toward me is the

area where i did see slowing. steady flow starting to build here and quick look and we'll end with the peninsula with a nice smooth flow for 101 up and down along the peninsula. back to you. breaking barriers. bay area woman is second in command of california's republican party. dhillon is not only the first woman to become ivice chairman f the california's gop, she's the first woman of sikh religion to hold that post. this election was not without controversy. the head of san bernardino county's federation of republic women wrote on facebook that because of her religion, her loyalty is toward the muslim religion. the posting says she's not a republican. party leaders denouncing the comment as racist and hateful. they are deciding whether to punish the member who made those comments. a bit of hollywood stops by

san jose. actor harrison ford attended cinequest last night to accept this year's maverick spirit award. the award recognizes an individual who embodies the independent and innovative mindset. the actor shows that spirit in new film "42" set to be released this spring. ford plays the brooklyn dodgers owner who signed jackie robinson and made history. >> i think it's an important american story that serves as well to hear well told and so i'm just happy to have worked on what i think is going to be a very good film. >> ford loves what he does and will continue working as long as the film industry will have him. 6:21 right now. history in the making. a woman gets her shot at becoming an nfl kicker. we'll show you how she did coming up. how one south bay lawmaker

welcome back. it's 6:25. a new plan to bring the a's to the south bay. san jose city council member wants the city to sue the san francisco giants. they continue to claim territorial rights to the south bay and have used that claim to block the a's move. the district that includes most of the proposed downtown ballpark property says the suit would not cost taxpayers a dime. the bay area news group reports that he has talked to lawyers who will take on the case on a contingency basis. the 49ers set to move to the south bay. it looks like wide receiver randy moss will not be back to another season. moss tweeting a message out over the weekend hinting at his departure. wish we could have finished the job. thanks for the opportunity.

tell us about? >> not really clear any progress was made at all. still polar opposite and now we have a budget that's $85 billion smaller than it was just a few days ago and as people in california and around the country brace for how to deal with that, here's in washington they're trying to figure out how, if at all possible, to reverse it. one thing republicans say they're not talking about are tax increases. >> i haven't heard a single senate republican say they would be willing to raise a dime in taxes. >> he got us takes hikes. it's time to cut spending. every american knows it. >> so while budget cuts may be here to say, the other deadline coming at the end of the month, march 27th, for temporary funding to run out for the government, that one looks like we may see some compromise on. republican leader john boehner saying they're not wanting to put a government shutdown on top of the budget cuts until they extend the temporary funding several more months until the

rob mayeda, mother nature bringing rain. >> especially by later tomorrow. you'll want to do ymca or outdoor activities, this one is the one for you. 40s and 50s outside. some mist with some of those clouds as the sea breeze pumps in low clouds all of the way into fairfield this morning onshore winds and patchy fog setting up in the north bay but visibility not that bad. and then the trend today cloudy start. sunny finish toward the afternoon. tomorrow it will be the opposite. the cold front sweeps in and will bring us rain for the tuesday evening commute. so this morning lots of low clouds all of the way inland. into the afternoon, maybe a stray shower firing up around the hilltops around the hills east of san jose. temperatures by lunchtime mainly 50s close to 60 in concord by noon and then we'll see low to mid 60s inland for the tri-valley today but mainly 50s across the inner bay as onshore winds keep temperatures cooler than we had this weekend. so tomorrow more clouds fill in. rain comes back late tomorrow into wednesday and we could have

thunder for wednesday with snow levels dipping as low as 3,000 feet and we clear out and warm up in time for the upcoming weekend. >> all right. we'll take you quickly over toward oakland where we are looking at 880. i want to show you oakland coliseum area and northbound side with taillights southbound with headlights but the glowing lights is the issue. as rob talked about, we might have mist and low clouds. that might come into your commute. as far as visibility goes, you are all right as long as you keep wiper blades clean and probably water in that reservoir so we can spray mud off your screen as well. we'll look at the maps and talk about the area southbound south from the coliseum. you do see slowing there heading in toward hayward. word from chp that it is a crash reported south 880 on east 92 heading over toward hayward city streets away from that san mateo bridge and it's under that 880 over crossing so there may be some complications getting off that san mateo bridge on the hayward side. i'll track that. typical commute build for castro valley south 880 through hayward

and down in toward union city and slowing for fremont. earlier crash looks like it cleared from the area west 580 and we do have activity on the shoulder but lanes are clear so the backup now in through livermore as you approach north livermore heading southbound 680 from pleasanton down into sunol where we do have slower drive heading toward the hill and into fremont. north 101, north 280 and north 85 showing slowing 87 and 85 latest to show the build. 85 the worst of it toward the 17 interchange as well. we'll give you a live shot outside to see how things are shaping up at the toll plaza. backup in all lanes continuing to build off the berkeley curve. back to you. >> thanks. it's 6:35. we continue to keep an eye on breaking news out of campbell. police are gathering evidence after the city's first homicide in five years. this is a live look at the scene right now. officers just wrapped up their investigation just a few minutes ago in fact. they say that an 18-year-old man was walking near the campbell community center last night when he was shot.

that's near hamilton and winchester. he died at the hospital. bob redell is on the scene and will have an update on the investigation coming up. new this morning, it appears the urge to run may have been too much for a lot of horses in the east bay. the chp found several horses running loose on northbound 680 in martinez at about 2:30 this morning. the boulevard was shut down briefly so officers could work to finally corral the horses. they were able to get the job done. officers will turn the animals over to animal control to find owners. breaking news in pacifica. emergency crews responding to reports of a boat in distress. "today in the bay's" christie smith just arrived on scene there. christie, what can you tell us? what's the latest? >> reporter: good morning to you. i just spoke with incident commander from pacifica fire department. he tells me that they got a distress call about 5:15 this

morning of what you see behind me and that is a sailboat stuck 50 feet from shore here. what he says is that there are two people onboard and that the boat has a keel on the back that goes ten feet down and what the two people onboard have been trying to do is rock it loose but the boat is stuck. so the fire department is onshore making sure that the situation doesn't get worse. that no one onboard is hurt. that perhaps the boat doesn't roll. and they are waiting for what they tell me the coast guard should be here soon to help. i asked where the boat was from and at this point they think maybe from georgetown and sometimes boats anchor out in this cove and from time to time this does happen. so for now no one hurt or anything but the folks onboard trying to rock it loose. fire department, police, ambulance standing by and we're told that the coast guard is on

welcome back. casey anthony will be back in court today at a bankruptcy hearing. the florida mother was acquitted of charges she murdered her

daughter, caylee, in 2011. in january she filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy claiming to be $792,000 in debt. some of that debt stems from lawyers' fees she accumulated during her murder trial. anthony will be in a tampa courtroom today. a royal update for you right now. queen elizabeth ii remains hospitalized this morning but the good news is she will not be there for long. we have a live look at london where we're getting word the queen will be released at any moment now. this is king edward vii hospital. the queen was admitted yesterday suffering a stomach infection. not too serious. this marks the first time for the record in a decade the 86-year-old queen has been hospitalized. >> we wish her well. coming up, a suspicious fire say at a south bay high school. police looking for a possible arsonist. we'll tell you what you need to know to finally get that good night of sleep.

bob redell is live with details on this investigation. it's rare for campbell, bob. >> reporter: very unusual for campbell. good morning to you, marla. it's been several years since someone was murdered in this town. the last homicide was back in 2007 and now police are trying to figure out what happened here on the street corner of dumpster and lattimer. police found the victim around 10:20 last night after someone called 911. the victim's name, richard vega, an 18-year-old man who was shot more than once and died a little after midnight after emergency surgery at valley med. >> we're looking into all possibilities. we don't have solid evidence that the victim was specifically targeted or that it's gang related. we're certainly considering those possibilities in our investigation. and our investigators are contacting family and friends and witnesses to help us determine the cause and who may

have done this. >> reporter: police are also looking for the driver of a dark sedan that was seen driving away from the scene after the shooting. someone saw that car headed toward winchester. reporting live here in campbell, bob redell, "today in the bay." it was a tragic scene at this year's escape from alcatraz triathlon with an athlete dying after jumping into the water. they believe he suffered a massive cardiac arrest during the first part of the triathlon. they say in the 33-year history this marks the first time someone has died. we can tell you the water was colder this year because the race was moved from june to march to accommodate america's cup. organizers say they do not believe the water's temperature contributed to this man's death. >> they said temperature in the water was about 50 degrees. >> quite cold. >> cold out there. how are we doing today though on this monday? >> air temperatures today at

least we'll manage 60s inland today. not those mid 70s we saw over the weekend. warm weekend. almost a spring preview but today we got clouds to start and maybe some misty skies for a few areas this morning. more sun as we head toward the afternoon. 50 earlier in san jose. now down to 48 degrees. we're seeing upper 40s and low 50s thanks to cloud cover this morning keeping temperatures up but with winds coming onshore as the sun breaks through the clouds, it's going to stay down in terms of the temperatures. don't think we'll find 70s today. 60s inland and 50s around the inner bay. weather headline today we'll start off with clouds and then clouds will break up as we head through the afternoon with 50s and 60s for highs. tomorrow it will be the opposite. partly cloudy skies to start. and then you have rain and wind picking up by tomorrow evening and much colder air sweeping in which is going to help to drop snow levels as we head toward wednesday. so around lunchtime early afternoon the clouds should break up with maybe some isolated hill top showers for

parts of the north bay hilltops. widespread rain likely tomorrow. here you can see a classic looking winter storm. that will bear down on the bay area during the day tomorrow. as we jump ahead to your tuesday forecast, morning commute should be just fine. this time tomorrow through lunchtime on tuesday. then look at what happens. tuesday evening commute you have the heaviest rain as the system comes in starting at 6:00 crossing the golden gate and moving through the south bay by 11:00 at night. maybe four to five hours of some steady rain changing over to scattered showers. cooler air sweeps in which will help to drop snow levels as low as 3,500 feet and look at the sierra. tuesday night into wednesday a foot of fresh powder coming in to those sierra ski resorts for middle part of the week. low 60s in san jose. 50s back closer to the inner bay maybe near mountain view. low to mid 60s around the tri-valley and close to 60 in oakland. upper 50s in san francisco. upper 50s and low 60s into the north bay. the main event weatherwise will come in tomorrow evening into wednesday with a chance of some isolated thunder.

any time you get cold air aloft spring sunshine that happens this time of year and friday we clear out and warmup. 60s and 70s for the weekend. >> south bay is looking good for the monday. we do see unusual slowing now. 101 capital to the airport you see the build through the corridor and 280 typical pattern. look at this. 87 northbound from capital up into downtown we see speeds into the 50s. there's an unusually heavy portion of traffic. it's early for that. we'll track that and see how it sorts out. 85 slow between 87 and saratoga. that's your stretch for the morning commute. the build will bleed over toward cupertino later in hours. we'll look at the peninsula. 101 through palo alto moves smoothly. we see volume of traffic manageable north past the university avenue over crossing and then heading up toward san mateo ridge. i'll show you the san mateo

they do next to help this sailboat that's been stuck since 5:15 this morning. i just spoke with a gentleman from the department of fish and game and gave me new information. one of the things that they're concerned about is that the sailboat that is stuck in the sand is full of fuel so they want to make sure that it doesn't roll or break apart and spill fuel. that's why they are here. one of the things he told me that he's seen in the past is sometimes a larger boat will shoot a line to the boat that's stuck and pull it out. not sure if that's going to happen this time. the firefighter i spoke with said that essentially they are trying to make sure that everyone is okay on the boat and there are two people on there. they say that it appears to be from the georgetown area and that sometimes what happens is that boaters will anchor in this cove and sometimes as the tide changes they can get stuck and these folks have been stuck now since about 5:15. so all of us just waiting to see

what the coast guard might do to help but at this point they are completely stuck. that's what we have from here. reporting live in pacifica, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> just about 6:52 now. san francisco police are on the hunt for the people who broke into an unmarked police car in san francisco and stole an ar-15 assault rifle. sfpd officers were working in the area and say the car was parked and secured when someone broke in this weekend. the stolen rifle is for specially trained officers to be ready for rapid fire in close quarters. an investigation is ongoing. if you have any information, you are asked to call sfpd. police in palo alto are investigating a business robbed by a man with a semiautomatic handgun. it happened saturday afternoon. the robber walked in about 5:00 p.m., pulled out a gun and pointed it at an employee. he took off with some cash. police say they are looking into whether the robbery is connected

driver and also a passenger. san jose firefighters right now investigating a suspicious fire at an east side high school. that fire broke out yesterday afternoon at independence high school which is near mckee road and jackson avenue. this one started outside a building in the b villa which houses one of the school's principals. firefighters say the sprinkler system there good thing they had that and kept the fire from getting out of control. we're happy to report nobody was injured. investigators say this is not the first fire at that school. 6:54. promising news in the search for a cure for aids. scientists say a baby born in mississippi with hiv appears to have been cured. researchers used a faster and stronger treatment than is usually used for newborns. the child is now 2 and has been off hiv drugs for a year with no signs of infection. there has only been one other reported case of a cure for hiv. new this morning, if you are
