not this one overnight. a fire was set by a patient that was upset triggering an evacuation. the patient was detained. things are getting back to normal. what a night it was. this started around 10:45 with a patient who was upset about something. we're still trying to find out what. that patient decided to torch his hospital bed, set it on fire. hospital staff and security immediately called san mateo police for help in getting the patient under control. then had to evacuate other patients inside. police established a perimeter around the room with the erratic patient inside of it and tried to defuse this wild situation. >> san mateo police set up a tight perimeter around the room where the patient was situated. attempted to do some negotiations. the negotiations were not able

to successfully get the person out immediately. we called in a special team that's used to dealing with getting people out of situations like that. >> police say the fire wasn't all that big. it was on the first floor. this is a county facility. the whole standoff lasted two hours. we have heard reports that the patient may have had a knife. the sergeant said he wasn't sure about that. it wasn't clear what set the patient up in the first place. reporting live in san mateo, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> the bay area is preparing to honor two santa cruz police officers killed in the line of duty. a memorial service is planned for tomorrow at the hp pavilion in san jose. this afternoon, a public viewing will be held in santa cruz. bob riddell is live in santa cruz where community support is strong this morning. good morning, bob. >> good morning. you can see the expression of support here on the front steps of the santa cruz police department where people continue to leave flowers and candles and

plants. it is our understanding that the plants will eventually be planted in a permanent memorial garden in honor of the two officers. you can see the support and the amount of donations collected for the officers' families. the police department has received $45,000. local businesses have pledged another $125,000. you can log onto the city of santa cruz.com website to help the families of sergeant lauren butch baker and officer elizabeth butler. both were shot and killed last week by a man named jeremy goulet as he was investigated for a possible sex crime. he was shot and killed by law enforcement a short time later. ocean street. then the caskets will be taken to the hp pavilion in san jose for tomorrow's memorial service. two venues in santa cruz will show the funeral live on big

screens. stores open at kaiser permanente. the del mar will have a viewing. we'll have coverage at noon on nbc bay area. as well as a streaming live feed on the website at nbc bay area. police and fire are expected to attend. other agencies will cover the duties while they are away at the service. there will be a long funeral procession. >> talking about the huge procession and funeral service. many people want to pay respects. the journey from santa cruz will be an issue. it will be a slow procession. it starts with street closures by the boardwalk and continues with surface street closures at 8:45 a.m. they will get the procession going. continuing up highway 17 all a the way up over the summit through los gatos to highway 87.

they will go east along the roadway up north toward highway 87 taking them to downtown san jose. roughly 40 miles. if they are traveling at 40 miles per hour as they plan for the procession it will take an hour to get through the area. let me take it off the map and put it back on. come up 101, 280 to downtown and the rest of the south bay. 17, if you are going to take the route, be advised between 8:ha and 9:30, 9:45. take 17 continuing up into downtown as well. we'll talk about this in the next report. back to you. >> thank you very much.

it's 5:06 now. there is a new sketch of a man accu accused of an armed robbery. police say this man walked into the public storage saturday evening with a semi automatic handgun. he took an undisclosed amount of money and took off. there was only one person involved. we are told that person wasn't hurt. >> police are looking for your help in solving a cold case mystery. yesterday investigators released a clay sculpture, they are calling it a likeness, of a woman found dead 25 years ago. her body was discovered south buchanan road in 1988. investigators say she was not a victim of assault. she was wearing a cold watch with a maroon face and wore a thin gold necklace with a gold pendant with the letter f. we just showed you.

the woman is african-american, about 40 years old and sto'0" 5 5' 5'4". anyone with information is asked to contact police. the three people accused of stealing the yacht off sausa lirks to and getting it stuck are due in court today. it is unclear how they got the yacht out but they know how they started it up. the last person to use it left the keys in the cabin. it's not sure how much sailing experience they had. the trio managed to sail through the golden gate before running aground in pacifica monday morning. that's a bizarre story. >> that's crazy. >> christina loren is back and mother nature putting you back to work. >> she s. old man winter isn't done with us yet. in fact, we are two weeks away from the official start of

mike, what are you hearing? >> this will undoubtedly affect traffic. up to maybe 20,000 people are expected. that's a loosest mat. one of the numbers i did hear. a lot of people on this route. let's start with the funeral presentation. we'll have rolling closures. there will be rolling street closures along the board walk area starting at 8:45. traveling up highway 17 is. the procession going about 40 miles per hour to keep everybody there safely together. but the entire route is just over 40 miles up 17 then to 85 and 87 into count. that should take just over an hour for the route to clear. northbound on 17 is, the only good alternate is highway 1 or 101. let me take the map for you into the south bay. we'll look at the current conditions. wet roadways and traffic.

i will wipe that away and show you the north 101 is one of the alternates out of the south area. coming up, take 280 north into downtown. taking 17 north of 85 you're okay. once you get over to 87 to the right, you will get more congestion as folks come toward the hp pavilion. keep it in mind as well. use the freeways around the area to monitor traffic as it affects highway 17. >> it's 5:35 p. a man broke into a home, poisoned dogs and stole guns. one of the dogs died at that time hospital. the other was a police k-9 dog that is expected to survive. the house was burglarized and investigators think the officer was targeted because he's a cop. they are not disclosing his identity or the neighborhood he lives in. a $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. >> new details this morning about the bay area's six

officer-involved shooting in the past seven days. the shooting happened in san francisco just before 7:00 last night at the end of george court in the public housing area. officers spotted the car involved in an arm aed carjacking. they cornered the car in a cul-de-sac. the driver allegedly drove right at the officers trying to approach. one of the officers was hit with a police cruiser. officers opened fire and the driver crashed into a building. he was shot but is expected to survive. the officer that was hit by the car has already been treated and released from the hospital. no other officers were injured. the suspect may have been involved in a series of robberies in the city. >> christina loren is back and very busy today. plenty of rain coming out throughout the bay area. >> you know what, we haven't had significant rainfall in quite some time so you want to travel cautiously. all the oil that's been sitting on the roadway will make things

nice and slick with the added water. as you can see now the front is draped across gilroy and san jose. getting a lull from the showers. the fog is settling in and the winds are picking up and they will continue to do so throughout the morning. watch for slick conditions on your way in. you can see where the green shading is. there is a risk of severe weather. we could see strong thunderstorms with a lot of instability in the atmosphere. we'll keep the chance for tomorrow as well. the core of low pressure crosses over the bay area. keep that in mind. travel cautiously. the best chance of thunderstorms will be in the north bay in the higher elevations. winds will continue to play a role. you want to travel cautiously in the high profile vehicle. west-southwest wind at 17 miles per hour sustained. 45 miles per hour. the winds will start to drop off but not until after the rush hour drive.

speaking of which let's look at it now. good morning, mike. >> good morning. look at the shot over my shoulder. in the last couple of minutes since i told you about the funeral procession into downtown san jose we have seen this slow down kick in north of 680. i can't have time to swing the camera around. it will do it. . north 101 you see slowing kicking in as well as the sensors. under nbc there was a stalled vehicle. now it changed it to a crash. there are reports of a crash now at oakland road. sounds like it's in the lane. i will give you details from chp. there is the situation at the bottom of the screen. a spinout off to the shoulder. the blue on the map where puddling and ponding might be. the green on the map was wet roads. that continues up both sides of the bay up to the dunbarton bridge with the wind advisory. san mateo bridge has a wind advisory. 92 at 101, a crash may cause slowing at the connector. chp will be on scene shortly.

>> announcer: you're watching "today in the bay." >> now we take you live out to warrington, virginia for some serious snow coming down out there. it's very cold as well. that's the big storm sweeping across the east coast now. a massive winter storm in the midwest. now hitting the east coast affecting flights here in the bay area. some areas including chicago receiving more than a foot of snow and guess what, more is on the way. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is normally inside the warmth of the studio. they are taking her outside here where you can see the snow falling off and on this morning. i'm happy at least you have the hood and a hat on. how are you feeling? >> hey, john. we came out to show you all of the snow. it's been pelting us for 15 minutes or so. earlier we saw snow flakes and for several hours it was rain. but the snow is coming down now.

the interesting thing is it's starting to stick on the ground here around the capital. the house is trying to get out by 1:00 including a budget vote. they're not sure if they can come back to work on thursday or friday. government closed, major school systems closed. public transit open. we have seen a lot of buses go by. not as many people on the roads. in the outlying areas they have accumulation of three to five inches. so this is expected to be a big storm. the same one that swept through the midwest and dumped 7 to 9 inches in north dakota. 15 inches of snow. we expect 10 here in the d.c. area. but you're right. it's really coming down at this point. we're waiting to see what will happen. this afternoon we'll get the brunt of the storm. >> so mission accomplished if you wanted to show you bad it is.

treacherous. we are holding onto the sustained wind speed in oakland at 25 miles per hour. 18 miles per hour sustained in concord. just a few minutes away from the winds starting to pick up in the south bay. make sure you are ready. now you can see the moisture pushing into the south. that's the cold front there. the corresponding area of low pressure is on the way as we head to tonight and tomorrow morning. that's what's going to drive in instability. strong thunderstorms possible in the bay area. want to take you through your day via the future cast. you can see a little bit lighter activity. you want to keep the umbrella handy with stray showers around. tonight by 6:00 p.m. a little bit of a break for the evening commute. we are not out of the woods yet. more rain moves in through thursday morning. highs will be cool. be ready for that. count on a slick drive to work through 9:00 a.m. temperatures will warm up through next week.

monday back back to the mid 70s. >> even though the rain may not be falling the wet roads will be an issue for much of the morning commute for the bay area. this is a big issue here. coming up northbound 101 making the bend around there moving the cars stocked up around the bend making it back to the 680 interchange. i showed you earlier the red stretch continues here. this is the same area north to oakland with traffic backed up to 680. continuing back to tulley. there is an earlier spin out off of the roadway for north 280. spinouts here and one at mckey. the on ramp there the closed because of a single car spinout there. no injury. wet weather conditions to sprinkle the rain has come through. there is puddling, ponding, standing water through the area.

bracelet. >> the man accused of a deadly dui that killed a san francisco teenager will be in court today. 29-year-old kieran brewer charged with felony dui and vehicular manslaughter. police say he hit a woman crossing on saturday night. there is now a small memorial at the crosswalk where she was killed. there are no stop signs or stoplights in the area. yesterday, san francisco supervisors approving funding to make safety improvements along the roadway. >> a daughter of a missing man said in a facebook message the mexican government had completed their investigation into the capsizing of the fishing boat, the erik, in july of 2011. the family said investigators have found remains but the remains haven't been identified yet.

thank you very much for joining us. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm marla tellez here for laura garcia-cannon. we begin where a s.w.a.t. situation is under way now. we have a crew on the scene so we can give you the live picture. you can see the police squad cars there. san francisco p.d. officers surrounded a building near wallace and jennings in the city's bay view district. we are hearing one or a number of people are believed to be holed up inside. this stemming from a robbery at a medical marijuana facility. >> we are told the barricade started around 3:50 this morning. the police on scene working that. christie smith is heading to the scene, has arrived and we'll have details from her soon. we'll keep you posted on the situation in san francisco right now. it's 6:00 again on the nose. a patient at the general hospital in san mateo is under investigation for an incident overnight that forced a hospital

to evacuate. people say the patient started a small fire inside of a room at 10:45 last night. police were called in and cordoned off the area. medical staff evacuated patients just as a precautious. police did send in a special team. >> san mateo police set up a tight perimeter around the room where this was situated and attempted to do negotiations. the negotiations were not able to get that a person out immediately. so we called in a special team used to dealing with getting people out of situations like that. >> the lock down was lifted and the good news here after a wild scene, police say nobody was hurt and the damage was contained to inside that particular room. the fire was set.
