>> i had a hallow feeling in my heart that i needed to do something so i went and got some flowers. >> reporter: that funeral procession will leave santa cruz around 8:45. with will wind through downtown area and go over highway 17. now, when it is on highway 17, you know it's a two-lane route. vehicles will take up both lanes. they'll go roughly 30 to 40 miles an hour. if you are behind them, you're going to have to follow them. you won't be able to pass them. it will then proceed to highway 85 to highway 87 downtown san jose and finally to the hp pavilion where there's going to be quite a crowd expected. if you can't make it to the hp pavilion, they'll have alternate viewing locations in santa cruz via big screen tv. the doors of the kaiser permanen permanente arena will open at 10:00 a.m. the theater at 11:00. bob redell, "today in the bay."

>> reporter: thank you, bob. you mentioned everyone will end up here at hp pavilion in downtown san jose. it will be a packed house at capacity actually. officials are expecting 18,000 to 20,000 people to show up here to pay their final respects to say final goodbyes to sergeant lauren baker and officer elizabeth butler. the procession is expected to arrive here at hp closer to 10:00 this morning. it will include more than 200 law enforcement vehicles including vehicles from fire departments and the santa cruz county criminal justice agencies. the memorial is scheduled to get under way at noon in the audience today some 6,000 officers from all over the bay area and statewide. also thousands of just regular citizens who just feel compelled to say their final goodbyes and of course the families of the fallen officers. inside hp pavilion is ready to go. crews spending yesterday afternoon and evening making sure everything is good to go.

we spoke to santa cruz's deputy chief who is really spearheading today's memorial. >> we can all come together and celebrate what they gave to our communities and honor their memory. >> reporter: and here is a look at who is expected to speak today at the memorial service. family members of the fallen officers are expected to say a few words. also, the police chiefs of santa cruz and capitola. former secretary of defense leon panetta will be here and he'll take the podium and california attorney general harris and all of the way to the top, governor jerry brown is expected to be here, however, we're told he will not speak. if you are planning to come down to hp pavilion, take public transportation because streets will be closed in the area. the memorial is expected to last three or four hours and the road closures will last most of the

day. now our mike inouye is back in studio. he's got your road closures covered for you. officers, mike, are saying the worst of it will affect the evening commute. >> likely the case, marla. let me explain why. all of these folks that come to the pavilion, talking about 6,000 law enforcement alone combined with over 10,000 people likely to come in here to pay their respects, family, friends, people who didn't know these officers, all have to head down here for parking. once they park the service starts around noon and that will extend for a few hours and then in the beginning of the evening commute is when everyone is trying to get out of the area. we have parking for diridon station. that's combined with folks coming through the area for hp pavilion event.

there are alternates instead of driving. take caltrain or vta. south of san jose, the trains from gilroy, santa martine, if you are coming from work, that's a great idea for you. vta through the area will have reroutes specifically the ones that take you across santa clara street. we're talking about a good reroute. san jose area in general. south bay. we know this. the main area of concern by the 87 and 280 interchange. i circled vicinity of hp pavilion and downtown san jose. if you don't have to come to the area, if you have plans to come to the service today, then you might want to stay out of the area just for today. between 10:00 and 6:00 they'll talk about road closures. extra traffic. likely a lot of congestion after work hours as the folks from the funeral and workers are heading out of downtown. back to you guys. >> if you do want to participate in your own way, we will carry

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live in the neighborhood right now with details on this ongoing police investigation. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. san jose police say they believe that this young man was killed in the park but they're also looking at the possibility he may have been killed somewhere else and his body dumped here. this is an affluent area where neighbors say the biggest thing they can remember happening recently is someone thought they

spotted a mountain lion in the park. late yesterday afternoon guadalupe oak grove park became a crime scene. a young man believed to be in his 20s was found stabbed multiple times. he was pronounce dead here at the scene. the park surrounded by large homes and manicured lawns. neighbors are concerned. they think crime is on the rise here. this latest turn of events quite unsettling. >> it's scary. you know, you have a 17-year-old daughter, i have a 14-year-old son, and to see someone apparently a young teen or someone in their early 20s to see someone that young be involved and be murdered literally 100 yards from your house is pretty scary. >> reporter: now the neighbors actually just started a neighborhood watch program. they say they have heard of a home invasion here, cars and mailboxes being broken into. police saying so far no weapons have been found. they are of course looking for witnesses to come forward.

this is san jose's seventh homicide of the year. reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> let's get a check of our forecast now with meteorologist christina loren. >> we have an yktive day. i want to make sure you're ready for it. the actual core of low pressure, the cold front came through and now the core. we have a slight risk of severe weather in the bay area throughout the day today. keep the umbrella handy. showers offshore. spotty activity starting to ramp up along the coastline in sonoma county and this is what we're expecting. you look at where the green shading is, mostly along the coastline along the peninsula and through marin county is where we have a chance of seeing some very strong thunderstorms develop as we head throughout this afternoon. so it's one of those days you really want to stay tuned to the forecast. anything does develop, we'll break in and let you know all about it. uts o it's one of the days we'll be on high alert here. if you take the little ones to school this morning, make sure they have rain gear ready to go.

54 in fremont. your full forecast and seven day in just a moment. you might be blown away when you find out when the mid 70s and a few 80s return to the bay area. it's on your seven-day forecast. weather whiplash continues. we'll time that out for you. let's check your drive. good morning, mike. >> good morning. we're looking over here against 880. this is a more familiar shot. i turned the camera back to the north side. my mark turned it. i didn't do the work. i just asked him. north 880 moves smoothly with taillights. southbound side no slowing. we're picking up the volume a bit. the map shows you just south of the coliseum we still have reports of that crash. on the maps we don't see slowing as far as sensors go as they approach 98 and chp updated saying you don't have to worry about it. it sounds like that earlier crash is cleared from the roadway so there are no injuries or cars left over there. the road work may have completely cleared from 880.

580 earlier incident reporting dublin interchange. no problems now. we're looking down south 680 down toward sunol where we had an earlier truck on the shoulder. it's there. it's out of lanes. spectator slowing. bay bridge same situation as before. a couple cars in cash lanes off to the left. back to you. >> all right. thank you very much. new this morning, north korea threatening to launch a preemptive nuclear strike against the u.s. and south korea. the warning from pyongyang comes as the united nations gets set to vote on new sanctions against north korea over its recent nuclear tests. north korea is angry over possible sanctions and u.s. and south korean military drills. despite the warning, the drills continued in south korea today. about 250 soldiers took part in a helicopter training exercise to strengthen its military. in is a wild story. two of three people arrested for stealing a boat are now free. the man still in custody

convinced his two companions he recently inherited that multimillion dollar yacht. they say he invited the couple out for a boozy joyride and then grounded the boat in pacifica monday morning. gardner has pleaded not guilty to three felony charges. he's currently being held on a million dollar bond and is expected to be back in court march 18th. it is 5:12. al gore is being sued in a lawsuit filed here in the bay area. we'll tell you what the former vice president did that has someone so upset. plus, does the ad here just go too far. we'll show you a controversial new ad campaign aimed at curbing teen pregnancy. more records for the stock market and faa says it will start closing control towers. we'll tell you how that affects the bay area coming up. al gore and his bay area business partners now being slapped with a $5 million

lawsuit. at issue here the recent sales of san francisco based current tv to al jazeera network. a tv consultant in l.a. filed a suit in san francisco accusing gore and his partners of stealing his idea. he says he pitched this idea of selling current to al jazeera and he expected to be paid if the idea was actually used. gore is a co-founder of current tv. they sold it to al jazeeraa back in january for $500 million. >> 5:15. the faa announcing it will close control towers at smaller airports all over the nation. scott mcgrew, this includes one bay area airport. >> this is an airport which has a control tower run by private contractors. the faa says it is going to shut those contract control towers first. the cuts will come in april. assuming there's no budget deal. san jose's small airport will

not be affected. it uses faa personnel. south county just off highway 101 on the way to morgan hill also unaffected because it doesn't have a control tower at all. now, you can still land at san carlos after the cuts. it's just going to be uncontrolled airspace. the markets continue to set records and remember a rising tide lifts all votes though as steven colbert points out it's beneficial to those who can afford boats. good morning, jackie. >> good morning, scott. the futures turned slightly lower after the dow pushed to another all-time closing high yesterday. investors were cheered on by a better than expected report on john growth. we'll get data on unemployment, productivity and labor cost and consumer credit. the fed is going to release results from the latest round of stress tests this afternoon. the dow rose 42 points yesterday

a half of rain yesterday. we needed this rain. we're running a significant deficit. some cities didn't get that money. south san jose picked up tenth of an inch. close to an inch in santa rosa. we're sitting prettier now when it comes to average rainfall totals. what i can tell you is i look at long-term models and they lead me to believe we'll see an active march. each and every week we have a couple significant chances for rain. as we head throughout the day, we'll keep the chance in the mix. you can see shower activity starting to develop offshore. it's still a few hours away from moving onshore here in the bay area except at the immediate coast in marin county. maybe a stray shower or two for the next couple of hours. overall we're expecting the moisture to move onshore as we head throughout the second half of the day. let's time it out for you. we stop the clock at 9:00 a.m. looking good for your drive. sitting offshore at that point. we'll hit the system of low pressure between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. as you commute home, that's when this area of low pressure

arrives and starts to bring the active pattern back into the mix. between 4:00 and 7:00 tonight, we are expecting some of those thunderstorms especially down along the western facing slopes surrounding san jose. that's where we have the best chance today. there's fair game for thunderstorms to develop all the way along the peninsula and up in marin and sonoma county coastline. we stop the clock at 4:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. i love seeing friday on the map. you're almost there. we'll clear out in time for your friday. temperatures will be cool enough for a jacket today. 56 degrees. livermore, 54. 54 in san francisco. if you are craving the warmth, we have got it for you just a few days away now from 67 on saturday. closer to 70 on sunday. don't forget to change that clock. we spring forward 2:00 a.m. monday into tuesday, mid 70s arrive and then like i said before, as we head through the end of next week, a storm system moves through. we'll warm up and then we'll cool you back off and bring the rain back. we need it. 5:19. let's check your drive. good morning.

>> good morning. thanks for the reminder about changing clocks. i always forget that until saturday night and then i get disappointed. looking toward the south bay. we have a nice smooth drive right now. there's construction. that's about the only thing on our reports from chp right now. northbound heading up toward brokaw from 101 and southbound off 237 down toward the same area. we had overnight construction crews blocking a couple lanes. the southbound side down to just one lane. it looks like crews may be on the move for the next half hour expect slowing as they get the equipment over to the side and move those cones as well. we'll continue to track that. nothing really unusual there. downtown san jose this is where we're having the memorial service for the fallen officers from santa cruz. that caravan coming into the area after 10:00. by 11:00 this will be just completely slam packed with everyone for typical workday and thousands of people coming so keep that in mind into downtown and into the vicinity. avoid this area northwest of 280 and 87 if you can just because of the crowds coming for this

event. and looking toward the peninsula moving smoothly right now. 101. no road crews on dumbarton bridge. we'll look at palo alto and see how things are shaping up here. not a problem for 101 into san francisco. a quick look at the san mateo bridge and we'll end with this look at the westbound direction which is starting to pick up volume of traffic but not lowering the pace. we'll send it back to you guys. >> thank you very much. it's 5:21. bold new ads aimed at preventing teen pregnancy are causing controversy in new york city. the ads show pictures of concerned toddlers with captions like dad, you'll be paying to support me for the next 20 years. also, honestly, mom, chances are he won't stay with you. what happens to me? planned parenthood denounced these ads and the ad campaign saying it shames current and expectant teen parents and their children. mayor bloomberg arguing that the ads are meant to give people a clear message about the reality of raising children. you could soon see your

health insurance premiums go up a lot. blue shield and aetna moving forward with rate increases that average more than 11%. state officials say the increases are unreasonable but they have no authority to reject changes in premiums. insurers blame it on the rising cost of care and prescription drugs. coming up, the question is how loud is too loud. the major city that is looking to combat noisy headphones.

dispute pushback from hundreds of students at stanford, the university may today approve early morning classes. the university's registrar says getting everyone scheduled under the current format is tough so they are suggesting more 8:30 classes. more classes happen between 10:00 in the morning and 2:00 in the afternoon.

hundreds of students have signed a petition in protest saying it will negatively impact student life. heard that before. the student faculty senate will now address the proposal sometime today. >> because 8:30 is really early. >> a lot of important things to do late night in college. >> 5:25 right now. new york mayor michael bloomberg wants to keep his city from going deaf. the mayor and city health officials launching a social media campaign aimed at warning young people about the dangers of listening to loud music for extended periods of time. experts say hearing loss is actually skyrocketed among teens in the last 30 years. much of that is believed to be due to louder ear phones and ear buds which insert colledirectly the ear. last year he approved the ban on large soft drinks.

law enforcement from around the bay area bid farewell to two santa cruz police officers killed in the line of duty. in just a few hours, a funeral procession will leave santa cruz making its way to hp pavilion. we have live coverage of today's memorial plans. mike inouye keeping an eye on road closures. marla tellez has details about today's service at hp pavilion but we begin with bob redell live in santa cruz where the procession will start. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, laura. we expect within the next couple of hours that law enforcement will start showing up here at the staging area in the third street parking lot by the boardwalk here in santa cruz in time for what would be a very long procession into san jose starting at 8:45. i say it's a long procession because they're expecting somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 law enforcement vehicles, fire, first responders, and of course family all on their way to this afternoon's memorial

service at the hp pavilion for two santa cruz police officers shot and killed last week by a man they were investigating for a sex crime. yesterday hundreds of people from the community paid their suspects at santa cruz memorial where the fallen officers caskets were on public display side by side in a final salute. we have spoken to law enforcement who told us they've been overwhelmed by the amount of support they've seen from the community thus far. >> just that these individuals want to come forward and take part in this and they want to be part of something that honor these officers' legacy. >> reporter: the procession will leave santa cruz at 8:45 and wind through downtown before getting on highway 17. once the procession is on highway 17, it will take up both lanes of traffic. if you're behind the procession, you can't get around it. you will not be allowed to pass. it will travel at roughly 30 to

40 miles an hour. once into the valley, it will go on highway 85 to highway 87 and then finally to downtown san jose and hp paf vilion. there are alternate viewing locations for the memorial service in santa cruz. a big screen tv will be at the kaiser permanente arena. doors open there at 10:00 a.m. del mar theater, 11:00 a.m. those are alternate viewing locations if you wouldn't get into the hp pavilion which is expecting quite a crowd where we'll have marla tellez picking it up from there. >> reporter: we're hearing different estimates. 15,000, 18,000, 20,000 here. you get the picture. thousands of people simply heartbroken over the loss of sergeant loren loran-- we can t

you that hp pavilion is not used to hosting somber events like this one, it's ready to go. more than two dozen officers did a walkthrough yesterday making shoe the space is perfect for today's service. >> you just never know where those emotions are going to come from and all of a sudden it just hits you and you need a moment but it's been nice having this to focus on. >> reporter: here's a look at who's expected to actually speak today. family members of those fallen officers. the police chiefs of santa cruz and capitola. in terms of high ranking officials, former secretary of defense leon panetta and attorney general kamala harris. governor jerry brown is expected to be here but we're told he will not speak. we'll carry the memorial service live for you.

you can watch it on air starting at noon on nbc bay area and we'll stream is it live on our website, nbcbayarea.com. now, the service is also expected to feature traditional bagpipes, drummers and also a helicopter flyover and how about this? former "american idol" star who is also a santa cruz native james durban is expected to sing at today's event. as far as road closures, there are plenty of them to be told about. for that we send it back inside to the studio. mike inouye will pick up the story from here. >> you saw a vta bus that drove by. let's talk about parking first and then mass transit. parking around hp pavilion is limited. there are only a couple major parking lots through the area where folks can do parking for the hockey games and businesses and with thousands of people as marla has been talking about coming into the area, there will be an issue as folks arrive before the noon service. caltrain is an option for you as well as you come to the area. you may want to do that.

caltrain will take you from the south. there are three trains in the morning taking you to the diridon station. that's north of 280 and west of 87. now, if you can avoid downtown area, please do so. that will be a major traffic hot spot throughout the morning and also after the service bleeding into the evening commute. folks leaving at 3:00, 4:00 and downtown getting out as far as businesses go about the same time starting at 3:00 heading toward 6:00 or 7:00. a major issue for the evening commute. vta lines are rerouted. the area try to take an area from the north because there are many trains coming into downtown san jose. the diridon station is where you want to get off. the south bay is moving smoothly right now as you might expect.

it's only 5:35. we don't have a lot of traffic issues for the chp report. we'll get you some live looks at san jose and see volume of traffic because 101 is just starting to build north of 680. another live look shows you how things are shaping up past the coliseum northbound with taillights light for this time on a thursday heading up past the high street high rise and southbound side getting a good volume. down toward the san mateo bridge no major slowing here. that's good stuff. we're also looking at a relatively steady shot. yesterday the wind was shaking the camera around. >> a lot happening in the weather department. good morning to you. temperatures this morning are chilly. we're getting shower activity. could see some low level snow this morning. so far haven't seen a lot of action. we're expecting more as we head throughout the second half of the day and we just want to show you the peninsula readings. 39 to start in palo alto. about 10 to 15 degrees cooler than this time yesterday. as we head throughout the day, we'll see showers stream onshore. area of low pressure a tricky forecast.

you can see it out here spinning in the pacific counterclockwise flow very clear. it will saddle down the coastline and bring in a lot of instability. the storm prediction center way out in oklahoma is actually giving us a slight risk for severe weather. that's not just for the south bay. it goes all of the way up the peninsula and along the marin county coastline. we'll be watching that for you very carefully. we don't get that opportunity very often here. it's very unstable. that's what is going to be the case today. we're we'll be watching that for you. 56 in livermore. some strong thunderstorms could produce pea to dime-sized hail and gusts to 60 miles an hour and if you get caught under one of the thunderstorms while you're driving, it can become treacherous. we want to make sure you're aware of that. 56 on the way for livermore. getting into the rest of the day, we'll time out showers for you. we stop the clock for you at 2:00 p.m. on thursday. that's when the action starts. it's going to get even busier throughout 4:00 p.m. and continue future cast for you and

investigators are trying to figure out how an intern at a park ended up inside a lions enclosure. 24-year-old dianna hanson was killed by a lion at cat haven in dunlap. park officials called 911. deputies say the lion refused to let them near the victim so they had to kill it. they're trying to figure out what provoked the attack. >> we'll have our wildlife people look at the animal and determine if the animal did in fact attack the subject. >> pictures from hanson's facebook page show her working with big cats. her father says his daughter was fatherless and this was her dream job. >> thshe liked them so much. she always felt she could handle

it. she wasn't the slightest bit afraid to get in cages with the big cats. she had no problem getting in cages with them. >> the lion involved in the fatal attack was considered an ambassador for the sanctuary and made many public appearances. >> you can imagine what this guy is going to be like when he weighs 500 or 600 pounds. >> this is video on the ellen degeneres back in 2010 when he was just a cub. his handler said he was bred in captivity but was meant to be in the wild. the families of bay area victims of the september 11th attacks are now calling the tsa's decision to carry pocket knives on airplanes ridiculous. the mother of a man who died back in 2001 says the tsa's decision to allow folding knives with blades two inches long and half inch wide is a betrayal. >> to completely turn our back

up as we head throughout the second half of the day and the core of low pressure the most unstable part of the storm system slides down the bay area coast. you can see the core. rather large area. you see the counterclockwise swirl. it will press south and move over the peninsula and so that's why we keep that slight risk of severe storms possible along the peninsula all of the way down through santa cruz throughout the day today. keep that in mind where you see that green shading is where you could see strong thunderstorms. we could see dime sized hail. gusts to 60 miles per hour and brief heavy downpours so that's what we're watching for today. otherwise the rain comes back as we head through 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. rainfall at the coast today. between 2:00 and 6:00, the most active time period. as we head through the overnight hours, showers clear out. we'll wake up tomorrow morning mostly dry and cold but we're going clear you out just in time for the weekend. friday just around the corner. now 56 degrees in livermore. 54 in fremont. 56 degrees for redwood city.

entertainment district with room for a new stadium for the a's and new office space. the diridon station would add a b.a.r.t. extension and bullet train hub to existing service which includes caltrain and amtrak. the city plans to draft an environmental impact report on that plan in june. organizers planning a celebrations for the new span of the bay bridge are dumping a proposal aimed at charging people a fee for the festivities. organizers planning to use more than $5 million in public funds to help pay for this event. some lawmakers had suggested charging a $5 fee to people who want to walk across the new span in order to recoup some of the costs. that proposal was dropped this week. more than 150,000 people expected to attend the celebration which will take place labor day weekend. someone in the bay area waking up $33 million richer this morning after winning the superlotto plus jackpot.

states. this threat coming hours ahead of a vote by u.n. diplomats on whether to level new sanctions against pyongyang for a recent nuclear test. north korea of course often boasting of nuclear bombs and preemptive strikes. it is not thought to have the ability to produce a warhead small enough to put on a missile capable of reaching the united states. now north korea threats have become more common since pyongyang conducted its third nuclear test back on february 12th. this morning a grieving community will join with law enforcement across the state in a long procession and public memorial to honor the lives of two officers killed in the line of duty in santa cruz. detective elizabeth butler, a mother of two, and sergeant loran "butch" baker, a father of three. this morning we have live coverage of today's memorial and motorcade. mike inouye looks at the traffic impact. marla tellez with the
