difficult. but at the same time a lot of cardinals do know each other from other things they have worked on together. there are groups who know each other well. those groups can connect with other groups. >> but there's no vetting per se. what is your feeling about this? what is your feeling about that? >> i'm sure they talk about all the issues. >> on tuesday, after a special mass, they will file into the sistine chapel, cut off from the world and modern technology. michael angelo's last judgment. >> very associating. they realize they're part of a much bigger story than the latest headline. they're part of something that's going on 2,000 years. >> the cardinals will will cast their votes on handwritten ballots. two-thirds majority is required to elect a pope. >> they have a list of all the cardinals in front of them. then they write down on the ballot the one they're voting for. and then each cardinal

individually will walk up to the altar and place his ballot on top of a patent, a little plate, and then put it into a challis. as he does that he has to say a vow. he has to vow to god he's voting for the person he thinks will be the best pope. >> it's old-fashioned but it works. no hang chad. >> no hanging chad. >> they will be burned after every vote. the world will look to this chimney to look for a new pope to be elected. >> black smoke if they haven't decided and white smoke if they have one. >> what happens if we see white smoke. >> it will be pandemonium. >> many of them american tourists who never imagined their itinerary would include a daylight with history. >> i'm so privileged to be here at this time. >> we're catholic, so we're pretty up to date on what's happening in the church.

6:05 am
>> people are talking about it, meaning all of us out here. when the cardinals got in the room this past week in congregations, they know each other to some extent. were they vetting each other also? >> sure. they were talking about the state of the church, latin america, what's going on there, and someone from europe, asia. sure, they are vetting each other. it's an opportunity to button hole each other and find out what's going on. >> this is the first concave truly of the digital social media era. these are cardinals that come from all over the world. they are keenly aware of twitter. they know what's being said on 24-hour cable. do you think that has some effect on their thinking, knowing what's being said about them? >> i think so. sure. how couldn't it? at the same time, they're trying to be open as much as possible to the holyspirit. it works through secondary causes we say. works through ordinary human beings. through this process of the concave. i think they are attentive to
6:06 am
all of that. finally, they are trying very hard to hear that through the holy spirit. >> in every organization, it's not unusual from someone ste bottom to aspire their way to the top, thinking some day i might be. as a priest, do priests in general think some day i could be one of the cardinals walking into the concave? some day i could be pope. >> i don't think so. the job is so punishingly difficult. we're trained in the spiritual order not to aspire to something on our hones steam. if someone else notices oh, you would be good at that. and the will of god. >> those 115 cardinals not one is thinking i could be pope. >> sure. those gentlemen, one of them will be pope. generally speaking it's not a good idea spiritually. we're all flawed. we're all sinners. i'm sure that ambition goes through sometimes. >> thank you. appreciate it.
