coliseum. that's the direction for the construction. also, on the southbound side, the davis street off ramp and on ramp from southbound 80. the northbound side sounds like the on ramp to northbound 880 has cleared. we will track this and more. thank you very much. it is 4:32. overnight, emergency crews recovered a man's body inside an elevator shaft at the montgomery b.a.r.t. station. b.a.r.t. officials said they got a call about someone stuck inside the elevator. when they arrived, they found the body of a man in the elevator shaft. the man riding the elevator told police he was going up to the muni level to the concourse when he heard a yell before it stopped. personal effects, including bedding, were found on top of the elevator car. police are working to determine if the items belonged to the

victim who is believed to have lived in the elevator shaft. no delays on b.a.r.t. or muni. volunteers will help in the search for a missing oakland woman. erika mascaraleras vanished three days ago. she owns her own i.t. company, last seen near 34th and telegraph where a surveillance camera caught a photo of her. her cell phone stopped working thursday afternoon. investigators hoping to recover the last location her phone registered. her mother says she is frustrated with how police are responding. >> we do feel if your daughter was missing or your sister or your family member just disappeared, you would be frantic to find some answers. we need the law enforcement professionals to help us.

>> oakland once again the volunteers at the first congressional church in oakland planning to fan out in the neighborhood if you can help locate her, you are asked to please call the oakland police. a homeowner living in an east foothills neighborhood is demanding police take action on a recent burglary spree before the crime turns more violent. paul majors says three people broke into his woodley drive home stealing $20,000 worth of valuables. the break-in was caught on video by his next-door neighbor's security camera. he also had a break when a tracking app he installed on the stolen ipad sent a north san jose address to his phone. even with the evidence, an investigating officer told majors, there wasn't anything they could do. >> it is frustrating. i know the police are doing the best they can with the resources they are given. i don't know who to point the finger at. you hear whose fault it is from both sides. it's each other. make sure you think about maybe

moving to morgan hill, kuwait frankly and i was born and raised here in san jose. >> police sergeant tells us investigating burglaries is t e time-consuming. they can write search warrants but getting them taken care of is very manpower intensive. police say they are swamped with calls and they have to prioritize violent crimes. property crimes are on the rise all over the bay area. in san jose, burglaries, robberies and auto thefts were up last year by 30% over the year before. there were similar trends in san francisco, oakland and fremont. critics say police just aren't giving enough high priority to property krams because of staffing reductions and budget cuts redwood city deciding whether they will ban single-use plastic bans. it is estimated 42 million plastic bags are used annually.

if adopted, the redwood city ban could take effect as soon as april 25th. 4:35. today, palo alto will vote to expand its ban on plastic bags. it will ban them from delis, restaurants, catering trucks and all other places that serve food. the only exception would be small bags to hold takeout items such as soup. there would also be a ten cent fee for paper bags. this morning, minimum wage in san jose is jumping to $10 an hour because of measure "d" which voters passed back in november. opponents say the increase will hurt local businesses. some local business owners say they have already been paying their employees at the higher rate. it has led to better morale and less turnover. >> an average 40-hour week, that's about $3500 a year.

silence for deanna hanson, who worked as an intern at the wildlife sanctuary was killed by a lion last wednesday as she was cleaning out its cage. the board president says the reopening does, in fact, have the blessing of the victim's family. hanson's family has started a fund-raiser in deanna's memory for the animal park this morning marks the second anniversary of the devastating 9.0 earthquake and tsunami that hit japan. the 200-foot long ship remains stranded on an empty piece of land on the northeast coast. the city wants to preserve it as a memorial. city is negotiating to try to keep the vessel's owners from dismantling it. aside from the ship, more than 250 artifacts and hundreds of pictures will become part of a new permanent exhibition at an art museum. the earthquake and tsunami killed 19,000 people. more than 300,000 are still

without permanent homes. 4:47. catholic cardinals holding one final day of meetings before entering into conclave to select a brand new pope on sunday. the cardinals taking a break from several days of meetings. they attended churches all over rome. they have been discussing the future of the catholic church after the resignation of pope benedict xvi, the former conclave to elect the next pope officially starts tomorrow. >> there is a lot of talk about where the next pope will come from. some feel there is an outside chance an american can be named to lead the catholic church. dr. robert moynahan is the founder and editor of chief of "inside the vatican" magazine. he says while about a quarter of the cardinals eligible to vote are italian, there is a possibility they will not agree on which of them to elect as pope. that leaves the door open for any one of four american cardinals, timothy dolan, fran siz george, sean o'malley and donald ward. he says there is a drawback.

"today in the bay" bob goodell joins us. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. believes this was a homeless man who was sleeping on top of the elevator car inside the montgomery b.a.r.t. station.

this is based on the bedding material and personal effects they found inside there. around 9:30, a passenger was riding the elevator up from muni to the b.a.r.t. concourse level. there was a crunching sound. this person heard a scream and the elevator automatically stopped. it is not clear if this man was crushed while on top of the elevator or somehow slid in between the elevator car and walls of the shaft. the fire department pronounced him dead on the scene. it took them several hours to remove his body. b.a.r.t. is still trying to figure out how this man was able to get in the shaft in the first place. the passenger stuck in the elevator got out unharmed. reporting live here in san francisco, bob redell, "today in the bay." a family of a missing oakland woman is asking for your help to try and find her. she was last seen jogging in her neighborhood and vanished that afternoon. christie smith is live in oakland with the search efforts getting un
