for now, live in fremont, marla tallez, "today in the bay." friends and family of three people killed las weekend during a crash in daly city. a 23-year-old and his mother and brother died saturday night when a car hit them as they tried to make a u-turn. the archdiocese of san francisco this afternoon holding a prayer service for the family on east more avenue in daly city at the very scene of the crash. the suspect being charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. at this point, he has not yet entered a plea. 5:03. investigators are searching for the family the man crushed to death in a b.a.r.t. elevator shaft last weekend. the elevator in the montgomery station was reported stuck just after 9:30. a person inside reported hearing a crunching sound and a scream while riding up to the concourse level. fire officials found the

unidentified man dead on top of the elevator. he appeared to be homeless and foul play is not suspected but investigators are trying to determine how he got in to the shaft. >> a search is expanding this morning for a santa cruz county man who has now been missing for more than 24 hours. what's making the search more urgent, the fact he recently suffered a head injury and he could be disoriented at this point. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in scott's valley where the search crews are gathering this morning. bob, good morning. good morning to you, john. that search being run out of the scott's valley fire department. in a couple of hours, around 8:30, search and rescuers along with their canines will begin a second day of looking for 20-year-old matthew abraham. he was last seen wednesday night around 9:00 at his home on dobby lane here in scotts valley. his family thinks he might have wondered off around 6:00 or 7:00 yesterday morning based on the noise from the family dog.

earlier this week, abraham posted this youtube video to thank his friends for his love and support after his recent head injury. in it, he discusses how he was mountain biking on a train tressel above the san lorenzo river when he fell # 50 feet below into the sand, hence the swollen left eye and pain and disorientation he has been suffering through all week. >> i'm having a lot of trouble with simple tasks but supposedly it will get easier and easier until i'm fully recovered. but, at the moment, it feels like someone has dug pliers into my skull and they are trying to tear it open. all my muscles and my joints just kill with pain. >> reporter: the concern being he is so disoriented that he wondered off and is now lost. searchers have looked around the observation deck at henry kyle

towards fruitville. a light volume of traffic. those cars are moving slowly through the construction zone as they move the trucks and it should be clear in just a few minutes. we'll track that. back to you. one east bay community is buying guns back. the gun buyback being held at the pittsburg center tomorrow, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., march 16th, saturday. it is limited to bay point and pittsburg residents. the program will pay $200 for firearms and $300 for assault weapons. san jose police is beefing up its force adding several dozen new officers. the police academy graduating a total of 43 recruits. they are the first new graduates for sjp since 2009. the graduation ceremony set to take place at parkside hall in that will go off at 1:00 this afternoon. it is 5:08. the president getting ready for another trip to the bay area. when he will be in town next. plus, the new audit that

good friday morning. taking a live look outside. bay bridge. traffic moving slowly across there. i don't think because there is a lot of traffic. people easing into their friday morning. we will help you do that. 5:11. major meeting between the families of lost children in the newtown, connecticut shooting. three families personally touched by the sandy hook elementary shooting visited the bill graham center to talk about the sandy hook promise. it was a promise made between silicon valley tech companies and families right after the shooting three months ago. it's goal is to use technology to prevent another tragedy.

natural gas as a fuel instead of diesel, and create what he is calling the national energy trust spending $2 billion in ten years on alternative energy raised from oil companies. now, $2 billion is not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things, certainly not over 20 years. the loan to solyndra was half a billion. the loan to tesla was another rough half billion. do you know where this is? it is the biggest shell gas and oil field in the western united states. you probably call it monterrey county. a new study by usc says hydraulic fracturing of the monterrey shale, that's fracking, could add another 14% to california's gdp and bring in $25 billion in new taxes another day, another record on wall street. at least the dow. s&p 500 darn close. it is going to be volatile today. we will turn to courtney reagan.

good morning. good morning to you, scott. futures under a little bit of pressure right now after the markets posted a nice rally on thursday. the dow stretching its winning streak to ten days. it will shoot today to close higher for 11 straight fridays. now, the broader s&p 500 is just two points from its all-time record clothes. stocks are on pace for their best first quarter since 1998. we will get data on consumer prices, industrial production and consumer sentiment. the dow rose 83 points. the nasdaq was up 13 points to 3258. that's where we open when the bell sounds in about an hour from now. >> courtney reagan, having a great weekend. two points on the s&p 500. we have gadget friday coming up. we are talking about energy and gas. i have something that will give you more gas. >> thanks. >> great news, scott. i was starting to feel really great about our friday.

back to you. >> thank you very much. the plan to save the state money by furloughing employees has backfired according to state legislative analysts. it finds because of the furloughs, employees are taking fewer paid days off and those paid days are banked and have to be paid out when employees retire. the sacramento bee reports the state paid out $200 million for paid days off not taken. the furloughs imposed back in 2008 have saved the state $5 billion. they have reportedly cost the state more than $1 billion of that money, because employees have not taken those paid days off. >> president obama on his way back out here to the bay area. his very first visit since being reelected. he had a lot of visits preelection raising a lot of money. the president expected to be in northern california 3rd and 4th. during his trip, he will be hosting a number of fundraising

morning. a whole new era and new direction for the catholic church as pope francis steps in to begin his run leading the catholic church. we will keep you posted on what's happening on his official first day. 5:22. celebrity chefs and firefighters teaming up this weekend for a very good cause. firefighters from san francisco, vallejo and kern county will be pairing up to make some creations. more than $12,000 will be donated to the fire foundation on behalf of the winning team. the cookoff takes place tomorrow at 11:30 at momo's bar and grill in san francisco. this isn't your typical trip to the grocery store. a drive-through meat market is visiting the bay area next month. the temporary markets put on by a washington-based company. they move around the country delivering meat in bulk quantities. the selection includes ground

you all about san francisco. that is the beautiful and always picturesque bay bridge for you. getting you started early on a feel good friday, march 15th. this is "today in the bay." good morning, everybody. it is 5:28 right now. thank you very much for joining us. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia cannon. police are still looking for answers after a deadly shooting near the richmond b.a.r.t. station. a man was shot and killed near the mcdonald and 19th street entrance to the station. no one else was injured. so far, no motive or arrest. investigators releasing new details and hoping for new leads in the death of a san jose biker who disappeared last fall. the santa cruz county sheriff's office telling the mercury news erik dean garcia may have been with members of another motorcycle gang when he was last seen alive. garcia, a member of the mongolss

motorcycle club was reported missing last the september after leaving a party in san jose. detectives say he was possibly spotted with members of the ghost mountain riders club before he disappeared. his body was found three weeks later in the santa cruz mountains. a former san francisco crime lab technician accused of stealing cocaine is expected to change her plea. debra maddon is expected to plead guilty to a lessor charge of misdemeanor cocaine possession. she has already gone to trial twice on charges of obtaining cocaine from a lab by means of fraud or deception. both ended and hung injures. her arrest in 2010 forced a district attorney to drop hundreds of criminal cases. tomorrow marks one year since the disappearance of morgan hill teenager, sierra lamar. she left for school in the morning and has never been seen or heard from since. a special event for lamar's family is taking place this weekend. marla, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. this weekend is certainly all about sierra lamar. she was 15 when she disappeared in morgan hilgs. now, she would be 16 years old. her parents tell us she should be driving, doing the things teenagers do. there are two events planned for her tomorrow, one happening in fremont where her mom tells me sierra was born and raised. that's why it is going to be here. if you would like to take part, it is a fund-raiser. live music, raffle and plenty of kid activities. 1:00 to 5:00. the money raised will support the search for sierra. before this, the lamar family is planning a news conference at the sierra lamar search center in morgan hill. this gets underway at 9:00 tomorrow morning. we are told the santa clara county sheriff is going to be there. we will be getting an update on the investigation. then, there is going to be a

balloon release in sierra's honor. her mother will be at both the events. she tells me she is absolutely keeping hope alive. she is very anxious about this weekend. >> it's been hard, because it would be her junior year and this would be the time she would go to junior prom and i just feel bad that i haven't been able to share that with her this year. >> anton garcia torres is locked up charged with her kidnapping and killing eve thoen hn thoughy has not been found. dna evidence shows that those two did have contact. the public information officer with the santa clara sheriff's department tells me the case is still open and this may come as a surprise. he tells me, they are receiving 15-20 tips a month even a year later. the community certainly has not forgotten about sierra.

now, i wanted to mention after the balloon release tomorrow morning, there will be a search for sierra out of the search center in morgan hill. those saturday searches still take place every single weekend. coming up in our next hour, a live interview with marlene lamar, sierra's mother. we are live in fremont. 5:32. a south bay teacher accused of possessing a massive amount of child pornography is hospitalized after a suicide attempt. p.e. teacher, nathaniel forstell tried to kill himself after overdosing on medication. christie smith is live where the teach is recovering. >> reporter: nathan forstell is facing disturbing child pornography charges.

he is in the hospital recovering after an apparent suicide attempt. he is expected to survive and will undergo a mentally valuation at some point. the 44-year-old monterrey county p.e. teacher who once worked as a sub was arrested and released. paramedics and police came rolling up. police say he tried to overdose. more than 1,000 images were found on his personal computer at home according to investigators showing some children as young as four years old engaged in some sort of sexual acts. >> if he didn't do anything, why be scared? why try to commit suicide and do all that instead of saying, i'm going to go to court and prove i didn't do none of this stuff. >> reporter: he once worked as a sub in the adam rock union

school district from 2008 until february of this year. detectives say at this point, it appears he was viewing and sharing these photos, not producing them. also, seaside police are expected to interview students there to see if any crimes were, perhaps, committed on the job and we are told according to the volume of elicit material found, investigators are considering pursuing federal charges, which, if convicted, would mean a much longer prison stay. reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> the search growing larger for a scott valley man, who has been missing for more than 24 hours. last seen wednesday night at his home in scott's valley. what's making the search even more urgent is the fact that the 20-year-old recently suffered a serious head injury and may have him very confused. this man is lost because of his head injury. in a few hours, they will gather at the scotts valley fire department for a briefing, and head out for their second day of looking for this man, matthew abraham, 20 years old, from scotts val i will. he disappeared about 24 hours ago. he posted this video on youtube earlier this the week to thank his friends for support and update them on his head injury. last saturday, he fell 50 feet from a train tressel. he had been mountain biking on over to the san lorenzo river in henry kyle state park. fortunately, the sand below cushioned some of his fall and perhaps saved his life. he did suffer a serious head injury. you can see the swollen left eye. he has been disoriented. part of his memory is shot. he likens it to having someone twist his brain with pliers. >> i don't really remember much of friday or any of last week really. i was out for about 24 hours,

that fog will creep in right at the immediate coast and around the bay. we are expecting dense pockets this morning. i want to point out, most of our winds are coming out of the west, which is good news. that means that onshore flow is going to carry in that good ocean air all day long. it really is going to be a nice day. 48 degrees to start in san jose. by noon, 66 degrees. we are going to round out the day at 74 here in san jose. 71, fremont. 75 degrees in livermore. hopefully, he have been able to give your heater a break over the past few days. i'm pretty sure you were able to do so on wednesday when we hit 87 degrees in gilroy. the good news is, we are going to see these beautiful conditions. we need that rain. it is on the way. we are going to show you when and how much we are expecting. first, we want to check your drive. after all, you have to get to work to get to that weekend we have to get through treasure island tunnel to treasure island. this is a little slower drive heading up the incline towards the s curve. we had about four cars in total

the cal bears have to wait until sunday to find out if they get their ticket posted to the big dance. the bears upset by utah last night getting knocked right out of the pac 12 tournament. the bears now need an at-large bid if they want to make the ncaa tournament. also, laura garcia cannon, your st. mary's gaels looking for an at-large bid after losing to number one gonzaga earlier this week. the sharks did it the hard way but pulled out a win over the l.a. kings. san jose won 4-3 last night thanks in part to defensiveman turned forward brent burns. he scored the first goal of the game. with that goal, burns won a bet with comcast brodie brazil. he didn't get the shirt off his back but look at that, he pulled off his tie and handed it over. there you go. >> we'll see if that purple tie goes with burns' uniform. i am sure he is going to wear the tie for the next game.
