church? >> i think we're seeing the style. they call the preferential option for the poor. the bishops in 1968 gathered and put that forward as a defining element of the church and it was picked up by john paul the ii and i think what we heard is that the church exists preferentially for the poor and he is putting a face on that idea. that's a powerful dynamic. >> it shows a managerial style to the extent he told 230eks don't come, use the money and give it to the poor. what does that say to those that work at the vatican about the kind of boss he will be? >> quite a bit. pope benedict says itty advantage lies, worships god and takes care of the poor. if that's one of the top priorities of the church's life, then in everything we do there has to be a preferential option.

korea's nuclear weapons. the pentagon says it will spend a billion dollars to beef up the missile defense system along the west coast. here is now from our correspondent. >> the north korean leader revealed his troops during military kper sizes but at the pentagon hagel warned it is missiles that sounded the alarm? north korea in particular recently made advances and engaged in a serious of irresponsible and reckless provocatio provocations. >> 20 counter of u.s. military will stolester the missile defense system in alaska by 14% adding at forth fwrooely designed top destroy missiles aimed at the u.s. and will also install a high power radar in japan to groove early warning

wednesday because of a broken back up generator. >> we were treated fabulously. >> others are not. >> it has not been a dream. >> i am diabetic and have to take medication, and they have no elevator service. >> the dream, one of three carnival cruises reporting problems in a week, the legend had trouble with the propulsion system, setting back to tampa after a stop was canceled and theylation reported a steering issue and all a month after the disaster above the triumph, an engine fire that stranded them in the gulf of mexico for four days. in the letter from senator jay rockefeller, head of the transportation committee, the carnival ceo blasting the cruise line safety record. he has promised a comprehensive review of 23 ships. the recent headlines haven't

mistake. mark cal prit, nice to have you here this morning. >> it is interesting. in reading a lot of the reviews, conflicting headlines put he did point out i thought it was time to learn from his mistakes and move on. what did you take away from that? >> i think mitt romney and his reporters felt like he didn't get a chance to speak from the heart. i think the most important thing he said was the party needs to be reaching out. it can't have one leader. bob mcdone altd, chris christie, two republican governors in moderate states not invited to speak and if you listen to plom, jeb bush, both of them had the message up the party has to reach out. conservatives come to the convention but conservatives that want to win are listening to a message like mitt romney's that says the party has to reach

out. >> what's interesting, we're almost seeing a further divide. you have some of the older members saying let's come together and be more inclusive and some of the younger folks saying, no, that's not what we're doing, we need to stick on the conservative route. >> it is an age-old fight. how do you stick to your principles and reach out in every day life. the smartest messages are not just rhetorical. they're about helping people in their real life. what's government for? what is politics for? it is to try to make things work so the private society has a chance to flourish and people have a chance to find good jobs and live in a country that's secure and i think the younger people, some of them are saying we don't need new ideas. we're good just the way we are. look at the math. look at the demographics. look at the voting groups. thesis are emerging, ascending voter groups, skming you will see the smarter people,

including sarah palin today saying how too we reach out and not speak to the people in the room. >> you think we will hear a call to be more exclusive and accepting. >> i said maybe. sarah palin is someone that i think often seen as polarizing which he is, often seen as hard right, but she is also a bit of a pop list and one thing mitt romney failed to do is reach people that aren't that interested in politics and watch shows that aren't about politics and recognize that governments does play a role in their lives. >> and capitalize on the popularity of people like sarah palin. i want to ask you about senator port man comie ing out and supporting gaye major. >> he is not well known outside circles and most probably wouldn't rose him. he is certain, as well thought

engine noises and saw the plane was 234 trouble. >> when i looked back in the air i saw when the plane was trying to make a turn and the wings were facing straight up and dount and went stanted into the building. >> it was a massive explosion, billowing smoke. >> i know he was definitely trouble trying to make the turn. >> the plane landed behind a warehouse in a storage parking lot destroying seven cars and a boat. >> horrendous scene there. you can tell the fire expanded quickly and took everything out. >> airport sources say the men aboard the plane were doing an avionics check and suffered tubl engine failure and the pilot was trying to return to the airport. the ntsb will now try to tern the cause of the crash. >> high pinds in colorado are making it difficult for fire fighters to fight a raging

wildfire there. hundreds o acres are burning and dozens have been evacuated. so far there are no reports of any injuries. in what could be a real life oceans 11, how about this, an australian casino says it is out $32 million and looking at the possibility it was a scam using the casino's own surveillance cameras. they report a player at the crown casino had somebody looking at security cameras while he was betting on high-stakes card games. the casino is investigating. no arrests made. >> i can only imagine the planning process. after 144 days in space solid ground is looking good to three astronauts that just made it back to earth. it landed in kazakhstan on friday opening up to bring out the american and two russian astronauts inside. they have been at the international space station for

out of hungary where the notice is continuing to fall and the roads so bad people were forced to spend the night in their cars or buildings alongside the road. they say the truck gentleman jackknifed and traffic was jammed among friday and 18 trains were stuck between stations. there were reports of 100 injuries. around here we're focusing on snow coming down across the eastern great lakes. not a whole lot of accumulation by the time it gets into the new york city area. it will warm up too much and we'll be in the upper 30s and it will be i wet snow. we're going to see rain though fall across portions of the midwest. could be heavy at times, especially later on today. if you are traveling for st. paddy's day, look at these awesome cities.

florida's southwest coast they're racing the clock to save lives. >> there were three traveling out this way. >> they're searching forren danger erd florida manatees, gentle giants that spend their days eating plants in coastal waters and rivers and already threatened by speed boats and cold snaps they're now threatened by red tide. so far this year it has killed 184 compared to the previous record of 151 in 1996. >> the locations of the red tide is particularly harmful occurring in the area offshore where they congregate during the winter thinking warm water. >> manatees ingest the toxin by breathing it at the surface or eatingal sdwri coated sea gress and they then become peril liedsed and drown. >> they're languishing at the

about 40 volunteers have searched for her every single saturday. this person and her mother never met the girl but say her disappearance affected them. they say not a day goes by that they don't think about her. >> i know they're hurting and i, just anytime, i don't know, i could be sitting there and she'll just pop into my head and i just wonder where is she. >> lamar's father says it is the support from volunteers like them and the community that continues to give them hope that they will one day find sierra. her family has planned two special events for today to recognize this grim anniversary. the first event includes a balloon release at the sierra lamar search center in morgan hill. that gets started at 9:00 this morning. then there will be a search for sierra to follow. in freemont, an fund-raiser to keep the search going.

spotlight today, giving a high profile speech at a republican gathering. comes a day after mitt romney spoke there and said the party should learn from his mistakes. and disney princesses no more. selena gomez and vanessa hudgens shedding their squeaky clean images, trading them in for, we should say, more grown-up looks, i guess. we'll tell you about the movie they're starring in. definitely not one for the younger fans. >> maybe they're just going swimming or something. plus the food in italy is great but as i learned when i was covering the new pope, the coffee there is simply out of this world. coming up how to enjoy a little java the italian way. >> first we're going to switch gears for a moment begin this half hour with a very emotional trial out of steubenville, ohio. two local high school football players are accused of raping a 16-year-old girl. the case exploded on social media with a disturbing images from the alleged incident were posted online. ron allen has been in court watching the trial, and he's outside the courthouse this morning. ron, good morning. >> good morning to you, erica.

the judge decided this matter has said he will listen to testimony right through the weekend to try and resolve this dispute that has so divided and consumed this community. two promising young athletes are on trial. they have pleaded not guilty in a case that has cast them and many of their friends in a very harsh spotlight. in court, trent may and malik richmond stand accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl who prosecutors say was too intoxicated to know what was happening. >> this case won't hinge on not only the defendant's knowledge of -- >> it allegedly took place last august during a night when witnesses say dozens of underage teens were drinking heavily, and sharing pictures on social media, like this one, showing the accuser being held by the two defendants. and this video, showing a young man who authorities say did not actually witness the alleged attack, mocking the girl.

>> she's deader than a door nail. >> reporter: the defense claims social media and the protest that erupted as word spread online have only distorted the case. and prosecutors cannot prove mays and richmond committed a crime. >> we don't believe that they can even support there was, in fact, any sexual conduct, let alone that their conduct was in fact nonconsensual. >> reporter: however in court this week, witnesses, friends of the defendant, have testified they saw mays sexually attack the girl in the back seat of a car. and then later, along with richmond, in a basement, while she was lying naked on a floor. prosecutors have bolstered their case with thousands of text messages retrieved from phones used that night, describing what allegedly happened. many laced with profanity. and in one exchange, the accuser texts a friend, i wasn't being a slut, they were taking advantage of me. it's all been very difficult for this small town. especially because a local high

school, and its football team the big red, have long been such a source of local pride. >> there's a lot of hurt in this community. a lot of hurt and a lot of pain. and you know, remorse, regret, and we just -- i can't explain it. >> reporter: later today, the case could reach an emotional crescendo. we expect to hear from the 16-year-old girl at the center of this case. regardless of the outcome, her life, the lives of the two defendants, and many other young people in this town, will never be the same again. erica? >> so true. ron allen, thank you. want to head outside now for a check of the weather from dylan. good morning again. >> good morning. you know, we are talking about a much colder st. patrick's day parade this time around. here and in a lot of cities in the midwest. take a look at this difference. last year, in chicago, 82 degrees. it is 50 degrees colder this year than it was last year. same thing goes for st. louis last year it was 80 degrees. this year only about 42. and in new york city, last year

it was a really nice 62 degrees. this year, it will be about 40. i guess, you know, a little bit below average this time around, 18 degrees colder than it was last year. we are going to see some lighter snowflakes, too, especially by the end of the parade. but it's those wet snowflakes. temperatures today close to 40 degrees. so it's not going to accumulate or anything. just kind of making it look a little pretty. we will see rain back through the ohio river va >> here's a peek outside the window in foster city this morning. low clouds are waking up to an hour by hour. we'll watch low clouds as we pass lunchtime. as we approach sunset, a few more high clouds moving back across the bay area. we should see highs inland in the 70s. closer to the 60s near san francisco. should see temperatures similar to tomorrow with more morning clouds. rain returns late tuesday. more moderate rain as we head into wednesday. plan. a lovely group from texas.
