and ended in gunfire around 1:15 this morning. three of the victims went to the hospital by ambulance and another arrived at the hospital on his own. officials say one of the victims is in critical condition this morning. the others are expected to be okay. no word yet on suspects or motive but we know investigators still on the scene. also in san francisco, a fire about a block from the transamerica period which arson investigators say seems suspicious. firefighters battled the flames for about an hour. it was reported at 2:15 this morning and the cause is under investigation but we do know investigators are talking with a man picked up on vandalism charges. new this morning, one man is dead after a hit and run crash in oakland. police say they received a call just after midnight from a witness saying a car struck a man walking on foothill boulevard near cole street. that car took off before

officers arrived. the victim died at the scene. right now, police are not releasing any suspect, description or vehicle description. also in the east bay, the investigation continues into the shooting of a man who alameda county sheriff's deputies said to be appeared to be taking aim at them. that suspect remains in the hospital this morning. police say they got a call from a family member inside a home on seven hills road near castor valley boulevard around 7:00 last night. that person who left the home told police that a relative inside was behaving threateningly and abusively. soon after that, police say the suspect himself called 911, saying he was going to, quote, shoot up the world. he later called back saying he knew police were coming for him and he would shoot any officer who came close to the home. sheriff deputies arrived near the scene in a special bulletproof vehicle and they say that's when they saw the suspect hiding in the front yard. >> he's in the driveway and he's crouched behind the junipers and periodically he's popping up and

he's pointing what appears to be a rifle at the deputies. during one of those times, the sergeant who's in the armored vehicle, out of the port hole out of the top, is able to fire and hit the suspect. >> it turns out the suspect was not holding a rifle. what he was holding is still unclear. the suspect was in surgery as of late last night. his condition has not been updated. san jose police are on the lookout for a brazen killer accused of stabbing a woman to death in broad daylight. the stabbing happened in a parking lot across the street. >> a customer runs into the store and says "lock the doors." she says, there's a guy stabbing a girl. >> reporter: customers and workers inside watched in horror. they saw a man stabbing a woman numerous times in the parking lot. >> we could see everything that was happening, and we

couldn't -- we couldn't do anything because -- we could just see that guy stabbing her. >> reporter: police say the man talked to her for a bit and then turned on her. >> we went outside and i was, like, what are we going to do? they were, like, we can't get close, what if he attack, you? once that guy saw everybody was coming, he ran. >> reporter: investigators say the man hopped the fence into a neighborhood. officers sealed off the area and began searching house to house. >> i feel sad. she was a nice person. >> reporter: the insurance company shares the same parking lot. he would see her almost every morning. wynn says the victim has a 10-year-old son. >> it's very depressing for the young child and now -- i don't know if he knows his mom no longer exists, is gone. pretty sad for him. >> reporter: "today in the bay." >> police released this photo. they say 25-year-old san jose

resident juan ramirez and the victim, 29-year-old, were in a relationship about two years ago. since then, cruz gonzalez obtained a restraining order against ramirez. investigators say ramirez may be heading to mexico, possibly driving a dark green toyota pickup truck. if you have any information on his whereabouts, you are asked to call the san jose police department. another gun buyback is planned. this one will have a unique twist. organizers not only encouraging people to turn in their guns but also to turn in their gang colors. today's event will happen in east san jose. it's billled as unity three. and people are encouraged to bring in unloaded handgun, rifles, assault weapons, in exchange for cash. they'll also get cash for turning in their gang colors. the event runs from 8:00 to noon and will also have a peace walk. a longtime bay area baseball

coach accused of molesting some of his teenaged players is out on bail. police say he turned himself in yesterday morning. he was booked on six felony and misdemeanor charges including molesting a teenage boy and secretly filming another boy in a bathroom. as he walked out, coukaufman di not speak with reporters, only to say he will get comments in a few weeks. now police are investigating whether there are more alleged victims. >> several employees of the city of walnut creek could face criminal charges for failing to report suspected sex abuse by a teacher. 27-year-old jason perosa turned himself in after prosecutors charged him with child molestation for engaging in sex acts with under aged girls. police believe the crimes occurred while he was working at

center for the arts. law mandates adults working with children report any suspicion of abuse or neglect. suddenly got sick in class after eating brownies believed to be laced with pot. investigators believe someone from the high school made the brownies with one of the students at the middle school. five students at the middle school got sick and the d.a. is now involved and will consider what charges, if any, will be filed. consider yourself warned if you are out late tonight, you could run into a major road block in the east bay. starting at 1:00 in the morning, all northbound lanes will be shut down at road in oakland. that is right near the coliseum. you should allow yourself extra time. construction crews will be lifting steel columns over the freeway as they get ready to build train tracks. the freeway is expected to

it is intimidating. >> roses get a bad rap. people think they're hard to grow. the truth is, they've never been easier to grow. we've got great varieties like pink simplicity which bloom all season long. we've got great new products that help you solve any products you do run into. i do have six steps. you got to do so things right. one of the things is make sure you plant the right varieties. not all roses grow well in all comments. we've got great resources in the bay area. we've got gardens, rose garden, public rose gardens in golden gate park. berkeley, san jose. >> our municipal rose gardens -- >> number two, plant in full sun, at least six to eight hours. the less sun you have, the more disease problems you have. in our dry summer climate, you've got to water properly. one good deep watering a week at least in warm weather. maybe two. we've got drip irrigation systems you can use.

makes it efficient. conserve water. and of course you want a good thick mulch. >> that keeps the moisture from evaporating. >> that's right, cools the soil. and keeps the weeds down. >> is this something that a beginning gardnuarardener can d? >> yes, as long as you do the tips. and roses need to be fertilized regularly. hopefully, you've gotten your winter pruning done. and then inspect your roses all the time. make sure you're looking for any insects, diseases. if you run into be pros, that's where i recommend all in oflowe care. it feeds and protects for up to six weeks. >> settle an argument in our house, okay, because my grandpa says when you dead head the rose, when your bud is no longer blooming, you cut it down to the five leaf, is that true? >> well, that is a good

recommendation. actually, what happens -- the idea is you cut the spend flower off. because then the plant can put the energy into putting more blooms. i like to cut back a little farther than that. the farther you cut back, the stronger stem you have. >> you just took my husband's side. >> yeah, okay. >> i feel bad, i feel sad when i'm cutting it back. but that's really good for the at plant. >> if you fertilize on a regular basis, it's going to come back. i've got great tips for growing roses at flowercare101.com. de deadheading is very important. with the new shrub roses, you can keep them blooming all summer long. >> all right. i won't be a baby about cutting them back. you can get more tips, any kind of garden you want, whether you want low water kind, or things you can plant over and over again with the kid, all at the san francisco flower and garden show at the event center through tomorrow. tickets are still available. thank you very much for coming

overhead, even in foster city. beautiful sunrise this morning. just a few high thin clouds. if you are like me, always thinking about the beach, well, this is going to be a great weekend to get out to some of our area beaches. temperatures are going to warm very nicely back to 70 degrees in santa cruz. that's our beach pick day here across the bay area. definitely some of our warmer beach weather at santa cruz today. of course, the other coastal communities will be back into the lower 60s. it's not going to be a beach day for everybody. you get inland, temps near 70s. cold this morning, 37, in santa roz sa. down in the south bay, 44 right now in san jose. high pressure will really start to take grip of the bay area today and even for tomorrow. that's when we'll see some warmer temperatures. today, mid-70s inland. tomorrow, a little bit warmer by a couple of degrees.

the only unfortunate thing, everything starts to bloom. as you saw earlier, the flowers, the plants, the trees, everything really coming up, making for a very uncomfortable allergy forecast. all our allergens are in the high category. if you have allergies, you want to make sure you keep the medication close by. back into the lower 70s in the north bay. san jose, right at 71 degrees. we have more sunshine for tomorrow. it will be dry for tomorrow. here comes more rain. we need this rain. we have been in one of the driest seasons since 2013 started. the driest year ever here across the bay. we've only seen about an inch in san jose. inch and a half in san francisco. where we're used to seeing 6 to 10 inches by this time of year. so we're way behind. we have rain wednesday, thursday and friday. we'll have a chance to catch up. >> if you get your garden in this weekend. >> perfect timing.

we usually proface people who fill some sort of need in our communities, and often it is a need we all know about like feeding the hungry or finding homes for unwanted pets. but this morning, it's a little different. >> reporter: our story begins where no one ever wants to end up. a sexual assault response team or sart exam room. it's where victims go for medical treatment and evidence collection. a process that can last for hours. >> you're violated once and then a sart exam is basically not very warm and fuzzy. >> reporter: the fact that lisa knows this or anything about sart programs at all is thanks to a random conversation at a woman's retreat three years ago. lisa was told that sart

facilities were so poorly funded that when clothing had to be collected for evidence -- >> there's a lot of zeros. >> reporter: there was sometimes nothing to replace it with and victims had to be sent home in paper hospital gowns. >> this is completely unacceptable. i remember i had like this full body, like this compulsion to jump to my feet and do something about it instantly. >> reporter: it hasn't been an instant but it's awfully close. >> my mission in life is to bring awareness to this. >> reporter: she was at the time an undergraduate student. she decided to make her senior project providing food during exams and toiletries and clothing after. >> i said, hi, i'm lisa. i'm a notre dame student. >> i have this school project and this is what i want to do.

>> reporter: program manager linda richards says there have been other donations in the past, but never so consistent. never so well organized. >> i don't know what part of the universe brings this sort of thing together, but it worked for both of us. >> reporter: thanks to lisa and her grateful garment project, they have a closet full of new comfortable warm clothes. and they're not the only ones. in just a little over two years, the grateful garment project has expanded to helping sart programs in 13 california counties. >> supporting a demographic region of about 10 million people in california. this grassroots little organization that runs from my living room here. >> reporter: lisa is actually still in school. a graduate student. but every minute not in class is a minute spent on grateful garment. but she says she's reached the limit right now of what a single

>> we could use it. >> thank you very much. after debating, the u.s. senate narrowly approved its first budget in four years. $3.7 trillion budget blueprint for 2014 passed by one vote. it also protects some domestic programs that were targeted for cuts by house republicans. the senate budget, which reflects priorities, will now square off against the republican budget passed by the house of representatives. happening now, president obama will head back to washington later today after wrapping up a visit in the middle east. before he leaves, the president will travel to jordan's renowned ancient city of petra. he announced an aid package of $200 million for jordan to help the kingdom cope with the influx of refugees fleeing the deadly

violence in syria. most of his trip was spent trying to reassure israelis he is committed to their security. authorities in brazil releasing a startling report on that nightclub fire that killed nearly 250 people earlier this year. the report identifies 35 people as, quote, responsible for the tragedy, and concludes that a number of factors contributed to the deadly blaze. authorities now say they plan to file murder charges, citing irregularities with safety permits. the report says inspectors failled to take action against the club before the fire happened. violations include the use of a flair, faulty fire extinguishers and blocked access to the only exit. closer to home, we are following a developing story in san francisco, where four people are recovering this morning after shooting at a nightclub. police say the shooting happened outside 3:30 rich nightclub, which is near the intersection,

homicide of the year. police releasing this picture of the man they say stabbed a woman to death in the parking lot of her apartment complex which is right across the street from the sheriff's department. they say 25-year-old juan ramirez and the victim, 29-year-old sandra cruz gonzalez were in a relationship about two years ago but in the time since cruz gonzalez had obtained a restraining order for her own protection against ramirez. homicide detectives say ramirez may be headed to mexico, possibly driving a dark green 1996 toyota pickup truck like the one you see. if you have information, you are asked to call the san jose police department. new this morning, the palo alto police department was just one of the many departments worldwide taking part in a global tweet athon overnight. for hours, the department tweeted about the calls that officers responded to, even sending out pictures like this one of a suspected drunk driver who smashed into a fire hydrant.

their tweet was a warning, don't let this happen to you. a bay area high school principal is being called a superhero this morning because of what he did to protect his students and his school. today in the bay has the story. >> reporter: superheroes is the theme of the dance at st. ignatius college preparatory high school in san francisco. the principal's face is glued to superman at the door. >> i guess it came into use here. >> reporter: rough is the hero of the day. >> he's getting a little fidgety. and then i think he saw this one hallway and he just took off down that hallway and that's when i took off after him. >> reporter: rough took off after 27-year-old gab braele ruiz vega because staff thought he was stealing ipads on campus. >> the more ipads, an inordinate amount going missing. students reporting it to us. certain windows of time.

light. >> reporter: in berkeley, nbc bay area news. a campbell couple had its birth plan all ready but it didn't include delivering a baby girl in the car. little solay was born tuesday in the family car on el ka minnow real in palto alto. her parents planned a natural birth and wanted to wait at home as long as possible before going to the hospital. baby had another plan. they had to pull over and dad delivered. >> my husband's a rock star. i couldn't -- i don't know what i would have done in a situation where somebody's in that much pain next to me and i'm trying to essentially get them care. so my husband is awesome. i couldn't ask for a better partner and, in this case, ob. >> you want to give her a kiss? >> everyone is doing fine. mom and dad are back at home with the baby and her 2 1/2-year-old big brother.

the cal bears are sure to draw the biggest crowd. they take on syracuse tonight at 6:40. the winner moves on to the sweet 16. cal is ready for the challenge. >> it's a great opportunity for us to make a name for ourselves and put ourselves in that national scale with teams like kansas and north carolina and duke. >> on thursday, the bears held off a last-minute rally by unlv to hold on for a 64-61 win. and oakland will be filled with runners from around the country tomorrow. it is the city's fourth annual running festival and it is expected to be the first with nice weather. the festival includes a 5-k, a half marathon and a full marathon with 26 bands and deejays lining the course to cheer on runners with their music. many were forced to pull out at the last minute because of the bad weather the last three years of the festival. leaving race organizers especially thrilled about this weekend's warm forecast. still ahead on "today in the
