7,000 patients to hepatitis and even hiv. nightmare in the dental chair. this morning, oral surgeon dr. scott harrington's tulsa practice remains shut down after a patient tested positive for both hiv and hepatitis "c" shortly after their last visit. >> we've never had a complaint of this nature, of this type. >> reporter: upon inspection, oklahoma's state department of health and board of dentistry found rusted instruments at the 36-year-old practice. one set used on patients known to have hiv and hepatitis was cleaned with bleach which experts say corrodes metal, increasing the likelihood of exposure. the machine used to sterilize dental instruments should be tested monthly, according to the complaint. no such test had ever been performed in the six years one dental assistant had been working at the office. the complaint alleges multiple felonies, including dental assistants unlicensed in

anesthesiology performing i.v. sedation on patients, but experts insist this is not the norm, and there is no need for general alarm. >> if you have a dental cleaning today, don't cancel it. this is a very extremely rare case. this is the perfect storm of everything possible being done wrong. >> reporter: but for the 7,000 patients in oklahoma told they are now at risk, the threat is very real. >> our investigation is ongoing. we have not concluded it. there's so many other multi-facets to this that i can't even tell you. >> reporter: for this oral surgeon, a full hearing is scheduled for april 19th, and the oklahoma board of dentistry has said that additional charges may be added prior to that court date. matt? >> all right, nancy, thank you very much. dr. nancy snyderman in washington. new information this morning on the health of former south african president nelson mandela, the 94-year-old spending a second night in the hospital. nbc's keir simmons is in johannesburg.

keir, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, matt, good morning. you can almost feel this country take a collective intake of breath. nelson mandela, father of the nation, rushed to the hospital late wednesday. he has now, as you say, spent this morning a second night in the hospital. we are told he is responding to treatment and is recovering. just last month, he was pictured with his great grandson looking healthy, but in an interview this morning, matt, president zuma, while reassuring the nation, also pointed out that nelson mandela is 94 years old, calling him affectionately by his clan name mediva. >> in zulu, there's a time when somebody passes away that is old, people say he or she has gone home, gone to heal. i think that's something people should be thinking about. i know that we would want him to be with us for a long time, and

i think he has been with us for a long time. >> reporter: meanwhile, president obama describing nelson mandela as a hero to all of us and saying he is in his prayers as, of course, matt, for all of us. we should note nelson mandela has been in the hospital three times in the last four months, and each time, matt, he has come back to his home here. >> all right, keir simmons in johannesburg, thank you very much. another big story, more belligerence from north korea. tamron hall is in for natalie this week with more details. >> tensions are running high with north korea this morning, as leader kim jong-un say his rocket forces are on standby ready to strike the u.s. this comes just a day after the u.s. sent b-2 stealth bombers to that region to drop dummy munitions as part of military drills with south korea, and while the latest threats from north korea do raise concerns of local conflict, experts do not

believe that pyongyang has the capacity to strike the u.s. homes threatened by landslide on washington state's whidbey island are still in danger this morning. experts say the landslide was 900 feet wide and some 1,500 feet deep and was likely caused by years of wet weather. one home was destroyed. 18 others are in danger, and the soil is still shifting. prosecutors in colorado are rejecting a plea offer that would keep movie theater shooting suspect james holmes in prison for the rest of his life in exchange for avoiding the death penalty. 12 people were killed and 70 others were injured in that mass shooting last summer. a new push for the environment this morning from the obama administration. the environmental protection agency unveils a new proposal to tighten emission standards on cars starting in 2017. now, the move would cut sulfur in gasoline and could raise the price of fuel by an estimated one to nine cents per gallon. a man in philadelphia owes

his life to a good samaritan this morning. take a look. watch what happens when this 63-year-old man walked right off the platform! unbelievable. a fellow passenger christopher nalful jumped right in there to rescue the guy risking his own life at the same time. the victim was taken to the hospital for treatment. and a speedy trip to space for three astronauts as the soyuz capsule docked with the international space station this morning less than six hours after blasting off from kazakhstan. in the past, by the way, it would have taken two days for crews to reach the iss. and it will be a good year for, well, it might be a good year for new york yankees alex rodriguez. the third baseman will be making $29 million. that's, okay, more than the entire houston astros combined, the entire team! a-rod had his top salary in the major leagues for 13 consecutive seasons, but here's why we say it's not necessarily a good season. he will probably miss half of the season, cash or not. and these two grandfathers

>> what are we doing? >> reporter: in an interview released by alaskan radio station krbd thursday congressman don young is talking about latinos who once worked on his family's ranch in california, and he used an offensive slur to describe them. >> my father had a ranch. we used to hire 50 to 60 wetbacks to pick tomatoes. it takes two people to pick the same tomatoes now. it's all done by machine. >> reporter: late thursday, young tried to explain why he had used the word wetback, a slur that referred to mexicans who illegally crossed the river into the u.s. saying, i used a term that was commonly used during my days growing up on a farm in central california. i know that this term is not used in the same way nowadays, and i meant no disrespect. migrant workers play an important role in america's work force and earlier in the said interview i discussed the compassion and understanding i have for these workers and the hurdles they face in obtaining citizenship.

alaska has only one member of the house, and young has served his state since 1973, long known for his outspoken style. young's comments come at a time when the republican party is struggling to connect with minorities after failing to do that in the 2012 presidential election where 71% of latinos voted for president obama. >> this is a we don't get it moment at a time when the republican party needs it least. this is just one congressman, but it gives critics and people who are skepcal of the party a new reason to say it hasn't changed. >> reporter: and he's a congressman who has been known to attract controversy from time to time. now, he won his own re-election with nearly 70% of the vote back in november, but he's facing some new questions, ethics questions, about whether he did not properly report some gifts. don young is a legend and he is a controversial figure all in the same. matt? >> all right, kelly o'donnell in washington.

kelly, thank you very much. we have new details this morning on a massive case of alleged insider trading. a federal judge is now questioning a proposed $600 million settlement between the s.e.c. and one of wall street's most successful hedge funds, but that is not stopping the fund's founder from going on a jaw-dropping spending spree. here's nbc's senior investigative correspondent lisa myers. >> reporter: for almost two decades, steve cohen has racked up returns of almost 30% a year for his investors and himself, building an estimated $10 billion fortune. the s.e.c. alleges that some of these profits came through improper inside information. to settle that case, cohen's firm agreed to pay a record $616 million. but on thursday, a federal judge declined to rubber stamp the settlement, raising questions and delaying a final decision. >> the judge was concerned about language that allows cohen's firm to not admit wrongdoing. >> reporter: the prospect of paying hundreds of millions of dollars to the government clearly hasn't hurt cohen's

wallet. he recently purchased picasso's le reve for a staggering $155 million, the most ever paid by an american collector. >> this is steve cohen showing the world defiance. this is him saying, look, you can investigate me. you can take my money, but i am still strong. i'm still worth billions of dollars and you're not going to hurt me. >> reporter: and if anyone didn't get the message, he also spent $60 million a beach front home in a fabulously wealthy neighborhood in the hamptons. another cohen property, a duplex in new york, bought for about $24 million, is on the market for $115 million which would be one heck of a profit. >> wealth has been totally redefined on wall street. being rich on wall street used to mean you made $3 million or $5 million a year for a top deal-maker. now these hedge fund guys have left the bankers in the dust. >> reporter: matt, we just got word this morning that the fbi has arrested still another trader who works for steve

jr. but we'll begin with our exclusive interview with the eldest interview of former democratic presidential candidate john edwards and his late wife elizabeth. she's launching a new program to carry on her mother's legacy and for the first time cate is opening up about her father's trial. you'll find cate edwards these days hard at work on two labors of love, the law practice she started last year in washington, d.c. >> hey, i'm cate. >> and the elizabeth edwards foundation in raleigh where she's launching a program designed to do what her mother love, help underprivileged students reach their promise. >> the goal is really to provide someone with an elizabeth. she really was in all facets of her life starting at home, a great encourager, a great mentor, and i think that this really encapsulates who she was as a human being throughout her entire life, really encouraging people to reach their full potential. >> it was almost one year ago that this was cate edwards' daily routine, a steady presence by her father's side as he faced criminal charges that he used

campaign contributions to cover up an extra marital affair. what made you decide to support him in such a public way? >> well, he's my dad, i love him. we love each other and we support each other and that's -- that's just how our family is. >> the trial laid bare the seemiest details of her father's very public fall from grace and betrayal of her mother with a month-long romance with rielle hunter, a woman hired to shooed web videos for his campaign. were there ever moments when you thought you made your bed, lie in it? >> i did not fault my dad for the trial. he made those mistakes, there's no question, but i never thought he did anything illegal so i didn't think it was right. >> was it hard to sit in that trial sometimes? >> yeah. i mean, it was difficult for family to see this very private, very difficult part of our lives rehashed in front of everyone, but there was nowhere else i would have rather been at the time. i'm cate edwards. >> in her short 31 years cate

has experienced exhilarating highs and heart wrenching lows, the tragic death of her teenage brother wade when she was just 14, her father's lightning fast rise to the national political sta stage. >> the cancer has returned. >> her mother's prolonged battle with cancer. through it all, her family had remained solid and intact but then news of her father's affair shattered their world. did you first find out about it from him? >> yes, he told me. he and my mom decided that, you know, that's how it needed to be done, so, yeah, i was devastated and disappointed. i mean, these are my parents. i had grown up with a lot of love in that family, and it was hard to see them go through this. >> were there times when you didn't talk to your dad? >> i don't think we ever went through that, no. i mean, we're a family of talkers, so we try to talk

through and get through things. there was a time i was angry with him, of course, but we worked through it. >> rielle hunter, have you ever met her? >> i have a long time ago, early in the campaign. >> i'm sure she's mott someone you spend a great deal of time thinking about. >> that's correct. >> she wrote a book, and she said some pretty unpleasant things about your mom. i'm not going to repeat them. did that make you mad? >> yeah, of course. yeah. i mean, i just thought it was -- i thought it was a poor choice, i guess. that's all i can say. >> was it hard to forgive him? >> i think it's easier to stay angry than it is to forgive someone. forgiveness is a tough thing, but, yes, it was hard, but we worked through it. >> do you think your mom forgave him? >> i think she did. i don't know the answer to that.

i think she had a mix of emotions. >> i think the family let it be known he was there at the end with her. >> yes. he was. he called and said can i come. i said, mom, can dad come, and she said yes. the three of us, especially, have been through so much together, so we garner a lot of strength from one another, and i think being together during that time and also for the kids, to have their family together during that time, was incredibly important. >> that family now also includes frances quinn, the daughter rielle hunter gave birth to five years ago. >> are you able to have any kind of relationship with her, quinn? >> well, i mean, yeah, she's my sister, and she's -- she's just a really sweet, innocent little girl, and -- and, yeah, i certainly think of her as part of our family. >> cate remains close to her father, now a single dad,

raising cate's younger siblings, emma claire 14 and jack who is 12. >> do you think your dad will ever run for office again? >> i doubt that, highly. >> there's still some good things i can do. >> i think there is still good things he can do, and there's still good he wants to do, but as a private citizen. >> kate is enjoying married life. in october 2011 she walked down the aisle with her college sweetheart trevor upham, a surgery resident and the cancer researcher who has been with cate through the toughest of times. what's the cate that you know in. >> strong and loyal, you know. she's beautiful inside and out. >> he wants to say messy, but he feels like he can't say that. >> that's true. >> in their georgetown home there are signs of cate's mother everywhere, an elizabeth is never far from her thoughts. >> i imagine you miss her every day. >> it's big things that go by like my wedding, she wasn't able to be there and small things. i get away with bad grammar.

never used to get away with bad grammar. really miss her during march madness because she loves college basketball and we were very superstitious so she would call me and say are you sitting in your living room. you need to get into the kitchen, we're not playing well. >> the "new york times" wrote a piece about you during the trial, the enigma besides edwards. >> do you think it was that complicated? >> it's not that complicated. i love my family, and there's -- and i'm loyal to them, and i care about them, and their pain is my pain, and that's as complicated as it gets. >> our conversation with cate edwards. i found her to be incredibly poised, someone of great strength, inner strength, who has had her share of heartbreak but has handled it so gracefully. >> i think the poise comes from years in politics or being around politics. you learn what to say and what not to say and a kind of presence, but also from your questions with her, which i thought were great, you get a real sense that there's still conflict there. >> she's been through a lot and had this situation with her

the chance for rain late saturday into sunday. hope you have a great weekend. ? ryan seacrest introduces you to a guy who is on the verge of making it very, very big right after this. the official retirement age back when my dad was a kid, life expectancy was about 61. not much of a retirement, huh? luckily, things have changed. to see how, we went out and asked people a simple question: how old is the oldest person you've known? the oldest person i really know is probably my grandfather. he's 93. 94. 104 years old. [ dan ] then we gave them each a sticker and had them show us. ♪ soon we learned a lot of us have known someone who's lived well into their 90s. and that's a great thing. but even though we're living longer, one thing that hasn't changed: the official retirement age. ♪ the question is how do you make sure you have the money you need to enjoy all of these years.

live in san jose at river glen school where a bone marrow drive is about to get under way a little later this afternoon. good morning, bob. >> yes, just a few hours from now. good morning to you there marla. this school, river glen school in river glen in san jose will hold this drive to try to find a bone marrow match for one their their first grade students. you're looking at him there. a 6-year-old boy in the hospital in a fight against leukemia. seen her on wednesday when san jose s.w.a.t. team advised him with a visit. they heard he wanted to join their elite squad when he grows up. they figured why not make it happen now. they presented him with a pin and honorary membership, which his parents said helped lift his spirits. he was diagnosed with rare lymphoma. after chemo they declared it in remission. that was this past january. then a month later, he was diagnosed with a rare form of
