"today in the bay's" arturo santiago is live at the san jose store where the bizarre car crash happened. a partially boarded up entrance is the sign that someone drove their car in here and on the other side of the store. the chaos started just after 11:00 yesterday morning. the suspect drove into the parking lot of this walmart super center on the 700 block of story road and rammed into a couple of cars, several cars actually. after that, he intentionally

crashed through the doors of the market and pharmacy entrance. got in about 30 feet and hit a beer display. the suspect got out of his car and started going after his customers in the store with what witnesses say was some kind of metal pole. people fought back. they wrestled him down and held him until police arrived. >> i heard this big crash. what was that? i was looking around and see all these people screaming and running with terror on their face. i have no idea what went on. what happened, what happened? they are all screaming and running toward the exit. it was like, what the hell is going on? >> one person had serious injuries and was taken to the hospital with three other people who had nonlif threatening injuries. the store was evacuated and police entered dozens of witnesses. investigators are trying to

figure out why this person drove through the front entrance of the walmart. they think that drugs may be involved. he has been arrested or was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon. his identity has not yet been released. live in san jose, i'm arturo santiago, "today in the bay." starting this morning, the chp putting a stronger focus on distracted drivers. april marking national distracted driving awareness month. the increased enforcement is aimed at letting drivers know about the dangers of a distracted driving, while also sending a very strong message. it is not worth the hefty fine or crash or deadly consequences. a recent survey by at&t revealing daily commuters are the worst offenders. nearly half, nearly half of them say they text while driving compared to 43% of teen drivers that admit to that dangerous behavior. >> two men from the bay area are wanted in connection with a gold heist from a courthouse. this is surveillance video of the robbery. investigators say these two

men stole more than $1 million in gold, jewelry and artifacts from a historical complex in wyreca. the crime happened more than a year ago. the suspects are 49-year-old david johnson and 51-year-old scott bailey. a $1 million arrest warrant has been issued for both men. now, to a story you will see only here on nbc bay area. a san jose firefighter that suffered a heart attack and nearly died while fighting off flames is suiting up this morning for the very first time in seven months. "today in the bay" bob redell is live at a fire station in san jose. quite the emotional day, i would imagine? >> reporter: good morning. we are outside fire station 1 in downtown jose. later this morning, the men and women will have a special breakfast to welcome backfire fighter, frank ryan, seen her visiting his buddies just this

past friday. today is his first day back on the job in seven months. during that time, he has been recovering from a heart attack that took place while responding to a call. ryan was fighting the st. patrick's cathedral fire back in august. when we spoke with him exclusively on friday, he told us he had come outside for some air during that response, was exhausted and really nauseous. something he has never felt before. he tried to walk it off, laid down and then blacked out. doesn't remember the heart attack that followed. >> from what i understand, my heart stopped at least three to four times. >> reporter: three to four times? >> two at the scene and two at the hospital. if this had happened somewhere else, the outcomme have been a little different. >> reporter: san jose's fire chief credits his firefighters and the staff at regional medical center with saving ryan's life. it is the kind of medical training that he is very familiar with. not only has he been a firefighter for 17 years here in san jose, he has been a paramedic as well.

reporting live here in san jose, ba bob redell in san jose. >> good morning to you. it is 5:07. you could see the wet roads behind bob redell. christina loren tracking the showers throughout the bay. good morning tourks john and marla. good morning at home. hopefully, you had a fantastic easter holiday with friends. a lot of people have friends and family trying to head back after enjoying that easter holiday. if you are heading down south, these showers are going to continue into the central valleys. they will press to the south as well. if you are going to be headed to the north, pretty much starting to see that clearing trend and that will be the case as we head throughout the day. we are still getting some pretty good rainfall, specially in the south bay. i want to widen out for you and stop the clock on your radar. from morgan hill to san jose, watch out for slick conditions on 101. we are going to check that drive with anthony in just a moment. watching some pretty significant rainfall. these areas of yellow and orange along the east shore.

clear that. the good news, it is not causing any slowdowns here this morning. back to you guys. >> a drive-through meat market is making stops in the bay area this week. washington-based zaycon foods is setting up shop in san jose and tomorrow in antioch. shoppers pre-order hormone-free meat in bulk online at whole prices. on the scheduled pick-up day, a refrigerated zaycon truck will arrive at the location and unload the meat into the customers car. only those registered and ordering on line know the exact pick-up location. >> in southern california, a very rare site this weekend. an easter bunny on a motorcycle, that's strange. he was pulled over by the chp. an officer spotted mr. bunny riding smoothly along his motorcycle. a little side car to go with him. the officer pulled him over for riding without a helmet.

it is the law. being a distraction to other drivers. the easter bunny was on his way to a charity event. so the officer decided to give him a little slack, a lecture and a warning but the bunny was able to roll off without a ticket. i don't think they make helmets big enough to fit over that big old head. >> and floppy ears. it is 5:10. the newest millionaire in the u.s. showing his generosity. what he is offering to do for his neighbors plus, got a mold or a hot water issue. the bay area city that's making it easy to protect or actually report nonemergency problems. >> wall street gets back to work after a three-daybreak. some good news from tesla as well. we'll take a look at the markets coming up.

a new app being introduced in san francisco to help people

report nonemergency and nuisance issues. the smart phone app is called up to code. it says the app will help the city better enforce codes and laws that including housing, safety and health. for example, problems with mold, heat, or hot water. instead of somebody calling to report a problem and the location, the app will simply use gps and allow a user to upload photos as well. >> no april fools here. tesla says it is finally profitable no matter how you do the math. scott mcgrew, that welcome announcement coming a day before another blast of tesla news. the ceo says he has another big announcement on tuesday. he is posting that tesla is on track to be profitable in the first quarter. sales are better than expected and the company says people prefer buying the most expensive version of the new model. so many people it is dropping

jackie mentioned that the world continues to celebrate easter. google got some push-back sunday when it decided to feature caesar chavez on its site the same day most celebrated easter. some saw it was an oversight. some offended users said they will use bing from here on out. they haven't recognized, google, easter on the site for more than a decade. i suspect most google users worldwide don't know who caesar chavez was but they do now after all this controversy. we got that message through. >> you can't please everybody, though. >> no, never, ever can. scott, thanks so much. 5:16 right now. i have to imagine meteorologist, christina loren, you love starting april like this, a lot of activity. i see you working the machines

and the magic. >> mother nature hasn't provided much rainfall for us this year. finally, she is coming through and better late than never, mother nature. we have a bone to pick. we are looking for the good right now. we have 1.5 inch of rainfall in oakland. if you have to get to work, take it easy even if it isn't raining when you walk out your front door. we still have a lot of ponding and puddles left over from yesterday. i want to set your radar back 12 hours. we even have a severe thunderstorm. just to the east of black hawk yesterday. one more time, boom. look at all the lightning in the central valley. it was a really active easter sunday. this morning, most of the lightning and thunderstorms have started to taper off. we still have quite a bit of rainfall. this is your real time look at where the showers are coming down. look at the san mateo bridge getting hit pretty hard. take it easy as you get closer to 92.

if you are headed up from the south bay, that's where most of the rainfall is. santa cruz mountains getting a little bit of a break for the time being. high today comfortable. we are in the 50s, close to 60 degrees in many cities across the bay area. it is no the that bad. it is rather mild. subtropical showers. 68 for livermore, 69 in fairfield. 65 on the east shore in fremont. 68 for los gatos. let's talk about what we are expecting for the day. a little bit of shower activity at that point down in the south bay. continue that futurecast as we head into about 4:00 p.m. that's when showers lighten up. by 7:00, they are cleared out of the bay area. we are looking good for the rest of the night. we are looking good for tuesday and wednesday as well. as we head towards thursday, look at what heads our way. another area of low pressure. more of the moderate to heavy rainfall embedded within the green. we could pick up to another inch of rain in the north bay. we really need it. 76 wednesday if you want to get outdoors. a little bit on the cloudy side.

we have one accident to report now. this is on 101 northbound at whiple causing slowdowns on the northbound. southbound, pretty slow. otherwise, that's all we have right now at 5:19. back to you, marla and jon. pope francis expected to pray privately at the too many tomb of st. peter. the first pontiff. more than a quarter million gathering in st. peter's square to hear the new pontiff speak, his message spoken in italian with a worldwide plea for peace. he is calling for peace between israelis and palestinians. he pressed for an end to the civil war in syria and the need for a diplomatic solution to the crisis on the korean peninsula. >> it is always a good thing to be nice to your neighbors. the man who won the $338 million powerball jackpot is planning to share some newfound wealth with his neighbors.

members of the san francisco symphony could vote as early as this morning to end a two-week strike. they have reportedly worked out a new 26-month contract with the board of governorers. musicians are expected to return to the stage at davies symphony hall tomorrow morning for a children's concert the americas cup scaling back the concert series. about 40 concerts were to take place between may and october but response to community concerns about noise, americas cup officials say the venue will host 30 shows, most of which will end at 10:30 p.m. instead of the scheduled 11:00. only ten of those concerts will be held on week knightnights. live nation says the stage and speakers will face the water and curtains will be installed

around the stage to address the noise issue as well. giant fans may have one last chance to see the beard representing the team on the field at at&t park. the chronicle is reporting that giants former closer, brian wilson, was invited to the world series ring ceremony taking place at the ballpark. they asked wilson to come but have not heard back from him. he became a free agent in december and is rehabbing from his second tommy johns surgery. he is waiting until he can throw at 100% before he tries to negotiate a contract with another team. >> big-time fan favorite. with romo coming alive, didn't have room for brian wilson. breaking christina loren's heart. >> it is his elbow that hurts. >> it is not easy. >> i have a feeling he will land on his feet. a good-looking day shaping up as you can see. showers continue on the radar, specially up in the south bay.

definitely do two hands today. from our emeryville camera, there is an accident. you can't see it. let's take you to our traffic maps and you can see for yourself, it is not causing any slowdowns, right at powell. this is approaching the bay bridge approach. we do have that accident still causing some minor slowdowns on 101 approaching whiple. otherwise, that accident has been cleared. back to you. that felt like a clever traffic report. thank you very much, anthony. i guess you can call this one karma. take a look at what happened at a purse snatcher in australia. the man was running after taking a purse and smacks right into the glass in perth at a mall. face down. that is going to leave a mark. people didn't realize he ripped off the purse. they ran over to try to help this guy. that's when the man's accomplice threatened those two people that got involved. that's when those two, the thieves, jumped into what police say was a stolen car and spread off. be on the lookout for a thief with a smashed-in face. >> with glass stuck in his face.

streaming from south to north. fremont got hit pretty hard. watch out for slick conditions along the east shore. you can see most of the heavy rainfall at this point centralized over the san francisco bay. it will be headed towards livermore, concord, the next 15, 20 minutes. we are going to keep tabs on that storm ctracking all mornin long. count on highs right around 70 degrees just about everywhere. your full forecast coming up in just a few moments. first, want to check your drive. count on a slick commute. checking on that with anthony slaughter. we do have showers continuing to come down even some debris. the latest being reported on our emeryville camera. this is 80 northbound moving through emeryville. there is some debris on the roadway in lane two. 5:27. if you are going to be leaving out on that roadway in the next 15 minutes, definitely keep the

the terrible news causing an enormous twitter reaction from fans, celebrities, athletes alike. here is that good news you mention. late last night, this picture coming from kevin ware himself. he took this post surgery from his hospital bed in indianapolis. the university of louisville saying, as you mentioned, the leg breaking in two places. doctors reset it overnight. he will remain in that hospital until at least tuesday. they say new this morning, his injury is not career-ending but his recovery will take about a year. this was the story of the game. what was also interesting was this on-line morality play that unraveled afterwards. not posting pictures of the injury. cbs showed it a couple of times but decided not to replay it after halftime. not to mention all the tweets from all the celebrities, the people, the fans who were watching. this fast-paced window in the

part of san jose being boarded up after shoppers were shocked after a car slammed into the store. a bizarre story. >> reporter: jon, it looks like there will be a couple of sliding doors that will be working when the store opens a couple of hours from now. the only time anything chaotic took place are the boarded-up windows here at the pharmacy and market entrance of the walmart. this is the super center on the 700 block of story road just after 11:00 yesterday morning. a man drove into the parking lot and crashed into vehicles. he then headed for the entrance of the walmart, rammed through the front window in between the automatic sliding doors, drove about 30 feet, hit a beer display and came to a stop. in the middle of the fear and condition fusion, witnesses say the suspect got out of the car and started attacking customers in the store. four people were hurt and taken

to the hospital. one of them had serious injuries. >> pulled out a pole of some sort, a metal pole bar and started hitting folks. there were people that came and tried to hit him, put him down with belts and things of that nature, couldn't get him down. eventually, they did. >> those who fought back held the suspect until police arrived and arrested him for assault with a deadly weapon. his identity has not been released. the store was evacuated for several hours while police were interviewing dozens of witnesses. police are still trying to figure out why the suspect lost control and drove in through the front entrance. they believe drugs might be involved. live in san jose, arturo santiago, "today in the bay." bay area investigators trying to figure out what caused a tour bus to catch fire. only the driver was on board. the flames started pouring out of the engine in vallejo last night. nearby trees caught on fire,

which, in turn, threatened an apartment complex. that apartment complex was evacuated but no reports of damage. the fire, also shut down parts of interstate 80 for about 90 minutes, just a jam there. good news, nobody was injured. now, to the story you will only see on nbc bay area. a san jose firefighter that suffered a heart attack and almost died while battling a fire is suiting up for the first time in seven months. >> reporter: in a few hours, fire station one will welcome back one of their own, a firefighter almost killed in the line of duty. >> we have a firefighter down at truck one. we need ems. >> reporter: that was the radio call to save firefighter frank ryan who had collapsed while fighting the st. patrick cathedral fire last august. he spoke with us exclusively

this past friday during a visit back to station one where he is based. he recalled for us what happened that day. he tells us it was really hot. he came out for air, started feeling really sick, nauseated, thought he could walk it off, ended up laying down and then went black. he blacked out. he tells us his heart stopped three or four times. it got so bad, some thought it was a goner. >> not all family members get along. when things like this happen, everybody comes together. >> it is amazing. for me, it is an incident that hasn't ended. monday will be a day where we can all say the incident is finally over. >> reporter: san jose's fire staff credits the firefighters and the medical staff with saving his life. he has been a firefighter for the past 17 years and a paramedic as well. reporting live outside san jose fire station number 1, bob

redell, "today in the bay." >> very happy to see him back on the job. it is 5:39. christina loren, always hard on the job chasing some raindrops for us. indeed, i am. good morning to you, jon and marla. good morning to you at home. showers still streaming from south to north. take a look at this. the east shore is lit up like a christmas tree. we are getting some really significant rainfall, specially over fremont. take it easy there. san leandro starting to get hit really hard. we head through the next 15, 20 minutes. it will start to make its way over the oakland hills. 39 minutes away from steady rainfall. in alamo, we are going to continue to track these showers as they develop throughout the morning. we are still going to be tracking them. as of 10:00 a.m., your futurecast tells that story. mostly confined to the western-facing slopes facing san jose. you could get caught with a stray shower. after that, between 2:00 and 4:00, starting to clear out significantly. by this evening, as you make your way home from work, if that's where you are headed,

a big breakthrough to reform our nation's immigration laws. the big hurdle negotiators have overcome. welcome back. >> reporter: nowhere but california has this really been a huge issue. nowhere more than california. 2.2 million undocumented work ker workers. a lot of them students who have been hired by silicon valley companies. their student or temporary visas have become out. this has become a real problem. this gang of eight that's been working on it since last fall say business and labor leaders

have come up with a framework for a guest worker program that would allow temporary visas and permanent visas after a year so students and workers could stay in the united states, many of them who have been here illegally or their visas are about to run out so they could stay here. the other component is border security, what republicans are very concerned about. they are writing that into this bill they expect to have ready for review in the next week. >> very good. thank you, tracie a massive pileup in virginia. nearly 100 cars involved in this chain reaction crash which happened yesterday near the virginia/north carolina border. it was a mess out there. three people unfortunately died. at least 25 more were hurt. the pileup was actually 17 separate crashes all happening within one mile. within a one-mile stretch of that interstate. the cause of the initial crash

look at how far it goes back. we are talking about at least a quarter of a mile backup here from los med dan knows to antioch. as you use this route, keep in mind that accident is right at texas street. that is approaching los medanos. i hope i am saying that right. a few more accidents coming your way. just remember, take it easy on those roads, guys. 5:47. a big medical change for women takes effect today. as of this morning, women getting a routine mammogram will see a big difference not in the actual screening but in the information they get following the check-up. a new state law requires doctors doing mammogram screens to inform their patients if they have dense breast tissue, which makes it harder to spot tumors and correctly evaluate the

results of a mammogram. doctors say in some cases, an ultrasound after a mammogram may be more effective. the bill was penned by former state senator, joe submidian. starting today, people all over the bay area will be paying a little more in taxes. a new state tax goes into effect in a number of bay area counties. santa clara, most shoppers will be paying 8.75%. in san mateo county, most paying 9%. marin county, 8.5%. other cities seeing a jump, orinda, novato, san rafael and campbell, 9% sales tax.

santiago is live where the bizarre car crash happened. you can see some of the damage behind you. still boarded up, right? >> reporter: there is a little bit of damage here. partially boarded up entrance seems to be the only sign left that somebody had driven a car through here and into the store. everything on the other side of the entrance looks absolutely normal and ready for business. all the chaos started yesterday morning. the suspect drove into the parking lot haof the walmart sur center. he intentionally crashed through the doors of the market and pharmacy entrance. he got in about 30 feet and hit a beer display. the suspect then got out of his car and started going after customers in the store with what witnesses say was some kind of metal pole. but, people fought back, wrestled him down and held him until police arrived. >> i heard this big crash. what was that? i'm looking around. all of the sudden, i see all these people
