koreans depend on it. it's a critical source of income for the at times famine stricken pariah state. but what appears to be economic suicide for north korea is yet another sign of how far it's willing to go, after threatening nuclear war and promising to reopen a nuclear reactor to make more bombs. >> the united states will defend our allies, and we will not be subject to irrational or reckless provocation. >> reporter: along the border, south korean soldiers watch for any provocation in this decade's long conflict that neither side has forgotten. >> north korea dubbed this tunnel in secret in the 1970s for a sneak attack on south korea. it was discovered and now part of the demilitarized zone between the two countries. south korea keeps it open as a reminder of the threat it has long faced from the north. the tunnel was wide enough for 30,000 invading troops to pass

in an hour. north korea never got its men through here to conquer the south but it's showing it hasn't given up on this war. >> and richard, this is a young, untested leader and already seems to be pushing things even farther than his father did. >> reporter: they both seem to be rational in that they both follow a consistent ideology that sees the north koreans as surrounded, that they have to be strong in order to survive but he certainly does seem more reckless than his father. look at what he's said over the last few days and look at what he has done right now putting 50,000 of his own people out of work, the center of a city of 200,000 that now has no economic base, it is a very big move some people saying he is cutting off his own nose to spite his face. >> richard engel in seoul for us this morning thank you. now to that disturbing video of a college basketball coach at rutgers university, this is video a lot of people are

talking about this morning. willie is here with details on it and the fallout. willie? >> it's pretty stunning, matt. mike rice, the head basketball coach at rutgers university facing a firestorm this morning for his behavior on the practice court. now the public university in new jersey is under heavy pressure to fire him. [ bleep ]. >> reporter: hurling insults and basketballs at rutgers players on the practice court. in this video obtained by espn, head coach mike rice even got physical with his team. [ bleep ]. >> reporter: shoving the young athletes around, the fiery coach's instructions came with some ugly language, too, including homophobic slurs. you [ bleep ] fairy. >> reporter: the tapes were shown to university officials in november by former director of player development eric murdock. he says his complaints about rice got him fired. but the university says mr. murdock's contract was not

renewed. he was not terminated. in december rutgers suspended rice for three games and fined him $50,000. >> every coach at rutgers understand the standards at rutgers and in this case a coach varied from that and paid a significant penalty for that. >> reporter: now that the tapes have gone public will that penalty be enough? >> the big question you have to ask now is do you want this individual, this coach going into a student athlete's home and recruiting him to play at rutgers? that's a concern. >> reporter: and there's enough concern to go around as the video went viral. new jersey governor chris christie saying he is disturbed by the video adding "it's not the type of leadership we should be showing our young people." nba star lebron james was more blunt writing in a tweet, "if my son played for rutgers or a coach like that, he would have some real explaining to do." coach rice apologized at the time of his suspension. rutgers monitors every training and rice attends sensitivity training.

the question is how has this guy not been fired already? it wasn't just the coach who saw the tapes, the president of the university saw them back late last year and they said they didn't fire him because it was a "first offense." >> there's hundreds of hours of the tapes and it will be hard to stick with that stance now. let me get another opinion on this. mike lupica is a sports columnist for "the new york daily news." he's with us by phone. good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. >> what was your reaction when you first saw the tapes? >> my first reaction why wasn't he fired the first time someone in a position of authority at rutgers by the way a state school, saw them. it's not going to be enough for him to get fired. tom pernetti, the athletic director, the president of this school has to explain why they signed off on a suspension and not an immediate firing for this man. matt, you always hear the same thing when something like this happens, oh, i was protecting the interests of the university.

how many times have we heard that before, and now we hear, oh, it was 60% of this happened in his first year as coach. well what about the other 40%? this is unacceptable. >> let me just ask you, let's break this down into two areas, what he does physically, pushing these players, kicking one player, throwing the basketball, there may be some people out there saying this is a tough sport. it's demanding. this is a tough and demanding coach expecting the most of his players. take that first. what's your reaction to that side? >> it's a bunch of baloney. one of the greatest careers in the history of college basketball, bob knight's, ended at indiana essentially when he put his hands on a student, okay? you don't touch the players. if that's your idea of a teacher, matt -- >> but wait a second. if we fire every coach who has ever touched or shoved a player, aren't there going to be a lot few coaches? >> there will be a lot fewer coaches touching the players but more offensive is the language, imagine if --

>> that's what i wanted to get to next. >> imagine if your boss spoke in the workplace like that. imagine if my boss spoke in the workplace like that. they would be fired on the spot. >> all right, so mike, the athletic director, the president of the university, do you see any other course of action that they can take following the release of these tapes but to fire mike rice? >> mike rice needs to be fired and then, i'm telling you, for a state school the president of the school and the athletic director, they've got a lot of explaining to do. they knew about this way before the tape, they saw the tape. they had to know this man was acting this way and certainly they've known about the existence of the tape since last winter. no, he's got to go. >> mike lupica on the phone for us this morning, mike, thank you very much. we should mention, we have a rutgers alum right over here. >> outraged rutgers alum. there's no question what needs to happen here. he absolutely has to go and not just because of all that you saw

but that's just a small cutdown as we've been saying of all the evidence that's out there and this goes back five months ago which i think for those of us just learning of this, you just can't even believe that that could still, that could happen. >> we've seen the anatomy of these kinds of scandals before, first it's about what the coach did and people start asks questions how the administrators respond. >> a coverup. >> cya going on. >> willie and i were talking. the university can't use winning as a defense for this coach. he has a losing record over three years. >> what are they protecting. he's been there for three years and had a losing record. look at it another way. he's an employee at a public university. what if a professor in a classroom at that school was caught on camera throwing things at students and shoving them? this is clear-cut, i'd be surprised if he makes it 'til noon. >> not to mention a lot of players have left, three really good players have left the program because of this coach. >> what should rutgers basketball -- what should rutgers university do? head to today.com, let us know what you think.

we'll put the question up there and give you the results a little later on. we're following new details on the murder in texas that has officials on alert. we've got more on that. >> good morning, guys, the murder investigation of that texas district attorney and his wife is now expanding and for the first time, we're hearing from one of the people questioned by police. nbc's gabe gutierrez has the latest from kaufman, texas. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: natalie, good morning. it's part of a wide ranging investigation that has so far seen theories of a white supremacist gang and drug cartels. authorities are aggressively looking into local cases the d.a.'s office had prosecuted. today, kaufman county is still on edge. >> our office is frightened and scared of what's going on. >> reporter: now we're learning that investigators are scrutinizing anyone who may have held a grudge against d.a. mike mclelland. he and his wife were found shot to death saturday, two months after his chief prosecutor was assassinated. among these questioned is eric

texas, thanks. a runoff victory in south carolina for former governor mark sanford as the republican advances to face off a democratic nominee, elizabeth colbert bush for the state's first congressional district. sanford has been fighting for a comeback after an extra marital affair tarnished his political career during his second term as governor in 2009. for the first time the woman involved in the affair appeared by his side and she is now his fiance. a win for the texas rangers last night. fans were left heartbroken. yu darvish was one out away from pitching a perfect game in the ninth inning when gonzalez hit a grounder straight through darvish's legs, so close but he has a whole season ahead of him, just keep the hope alive. it may not have been a perfect game but definitely a perfect rhyme from our own bob costas on "mlb now" last night when asked who his favorite rapper is, he began quoting

be a preview of the 2016 democratic presidential race. nbc's andrea mitchell is in washington with that story. andrea, good morning. >> good morning, savannah. hillary clinton and joe biden an unlikely pair of headliners at a global women's organization that clinton had founded 14 years ago. they are bound together by a shared commitment to women's rights, even though as you point out they could well end up as political rivals. two undeclared potential candidates on the same stage before a powerful audience of women activists. hillary clinton was undeniably the event's rock star saying she felt right at home. >> we've shared struggles and successes and even some fox holes over the years. it's a little bit like a family reunion. >> reporter: joe biden was invited to honor three heroic brothers from india who have been fighting the scourge of rape. >> these men have shown courage for putting the power of brotherhood to work on behalf of women and children. >> reporter: clearly eager to tamp down the political

speculation, they were quick to praise each other. >> vice president biden and i have worked together on so many important issues and i know what a personal victory it was for him to see the violence against women act reauthorized last month. >> there's no woman like hillary clinton. hillary clinton, that's a fact. >> reporter: still some clinton allies are already setting expectations. >> i think the time has come for a woman president, the only one on the horizon who could fill that role is hillary clinton. >> do you think she has it in her to run another tough campaign? >> i think she can do whatever she sets her mind to doing. >> reporter: putting the vice president in the awkward position of waiting for clinton to decide. and for now clinton will be making appearances including at a women's summit in new york on friday, plus giving some paid speeches working on a memoir, clearly in no hurry to jump back into the political fray. >> andrea mitchell in washington thank you. chuck todd is nbc's political

director and white house correspondent. >> good morning. >> so much talk of hillary clinton as an inevitable candidate. hasn't she heard this talk say in 2008 and someone named barack obama came along? >> exactly and i think that is always going to be the question that goes through her mind, it's why everybody around her is always very cautious in saying yes, we're doing everything we can to put her in a position if she wants to run, everything and the table is set but you have to ask yourself, what is she thinking? everything everybody's told her before told her now, is tell her now about this race they've told her before and that is what's sitting in her head and does she want to go through this again? it's never easy. no matter how inevitable somebody tells you you are. >> everyone says hillary clinton would be a field clearing candidate for democrats, nobody gets in if she's in. would you say that also includes vice president joe biden who has made no secret of his presidential ambitions? >> look, i do think somebody will get in.

city since february has been trying this new program, these traffic lights, part of a technological assault on traffic, and they say it's working. if you live in los angeles, this is a common sight. >> one of the things that i think people hate about living in los angeles is traffic. >> reporter: so bad for so many, commuters spend an extra 61 hours a year in gridlock. >> my commute is about seven miles and it takes me anywhere from 30 to 40 minutes to get home. >> reporter: that's why los angeles has synchronized every one of its 4,398 traffic signals, first major metropolis in the world to do so, raising the almost mythical notion of push button traffic controls. >> every day is different, whether it's the weather, traffic, construction, an accident, all of these things can change traffic conditions and from this center, we're able to change the signal timing. >> reporter: the system itself built up over 30 years at a cost of $400 million actually adapts to the rules of the road, changing signal patterns as traffic conditions change and

it's working. >> what they're find something they're saving drivers over a five-mile stretch of road about two minutes on the travel time for that stretch just by doing this, and if you add up those minutes, it doesn't sound like much on a given day but over the course of a year that could be up to 17 hours. >> reporter: and in a city where commuters live bumper to bumper, that's big news. >> at the end of the day you want to be home and be home as soon as you can. >> reporter: as advanced as the system is, it's not a silver bullet for eradicating traffic. >> there is no way to eliminate traffic congestion in its entirety but we're working every day to make sure traffic is as good as possible in l.a. >> reporter: and that's progress, even if it is just an inch at a time. now many other traffic congested cities are looking at this as an example and thinking about doing it. i do have to tell you on my way in this morning i don't think i sat at a red light but i'm note sure i would be willing to try

it's a whole new way to love mcdonald's. exhibit that just opened at a museum in germany. its goal is to help educate people about the jewish community and we will tell you right now, this approach is very controversial, some say inappropriate. nbc's michelle kosinski is in berlin this morning with the story. michelle, good morning. >> reporter: hi, savannah. the point is among germany's more than 80 million residents, only about 200,000 of them are jewish, many germans have never met someone jewish. this is a chance for them to learn and the curator says it's a play on the fact that many jews here, including herself, often feel like they're curiosities. in the museum's quiet, this exhibit speaks at times

uncomfortably loudly. ido parot might blend in but for the fact is he part of the exhibit. what here some have humorously or furiously dubbed the "jew in a box." you're in a box. >> i'm in a box. >> reporter: does it feel weird to be sitting here? >> it feels weird but people have the privilege now to talk to someone. >> reporter: and they talk. >> jewish people always stick together a lot. >> reporter: some approach nervously. this girl had never met someone jewish, wanted to know what it's like for israeli born ido to live where reminders of the holocaust are still very much present. this boy asked if he could tell a holocaust joke. >> i said not accepting really. really not german to do it. >> reporter: it was a good question. >> yeah. this is exactly what the exhibition wants to say. >> reporter: the brainchild of the exhibit, nicole

more than 2,000 photographs snapped casually on the street of your mother. were you surprised that there was this treasure trove? >> yes, a lot. i was expecting to find some treasures but not that many, and all these archives besides the reporters shot, they are nothing short of a treasure. >> she always managed as we're seeing in the pictures to look absolutely flawless. was that just luck or do you think she expected to be photographed? >> well, she was a professional, so in a way, she expected, but you know the beauty behind and the reason behind the book is precisely that, it's a middle step within the private life and the public life and that was the beauty of it, and of course the setting in rome helped a lot. >> one revelation in the book you write that your mother never considered herself to be

beautiful, and those of us who admire her find that to be pretty shocking. what did she say about that? >> well she didn't care that much about external beauty. she cared more about matters of the heart. of course, she was a woman, so she was, you know, she cared about looking good and all that stuff but she didn't mind getting -- i knew -- my mother had me when she was 40, so i knew her for the last 23 years, and she often, we often discussed that she didn't mind at all getting old and she always told me that life has its seasons, you know, so her mind was at ease on that, with that respect. >> from these beautiful photographs we see that she was lovely in every season. luca dotti it's great to speak to you. thank you for being with us.

creating your best marriage." good morning to you. >> hi. >> there are common denominators with a relationship on the brink, lack of trust and fear. >> we have to remember to nurture the emotional end of the relationship. in my study even cheating men, only 7% of them said it was about the sex. 48%, it was about the emotional connectedness. so everybody has to remember, if we nurture that emotional connection, that's the best protection and that ultimately builds trust and protects our love. >> we talked about amy and she's a product of divorce, she herself was divorced. is it tougher when you have that in your past to go forward with a relationship? >> she reminds us that childhood counts, what happens to us as kids, we have to keep that in mind, not to get stuck there, but to empower ourselves to be able to make healthy adult decisions. if i can understand that i'm mixing my past and my present, sometimes i can have that conscious awareness, i don't want to sabotage this

relationship. i want to keep it real and keep it present. >> in your practice i'm sure you don't judge when couples come to you but there are tell tale signs or red flags, whoa, this is a relationship having more than growing pains, it's on the brink. >> when people are angry a lot. if you assess yourself and say primarily i'm angry a lot that's a problem. here's a tip. if you feel you're disconnected, too many people make a mistake, oh well the kids are small, we're making a living. five years, ten years from now we'll have time for the marriage. it's an ingredient for disaster. we always have to keep making time and energy for the relationship today in the present. you can't wait. >> and it's something you kind of have to renew daily. >> it's that focused. if you want to be great at anything, savannah, you'll say it will take me work and energy and have that mental space. got to do that even for your marriage always. >> well let's do some tips because we want to give people takeaways here.

first one is spend uninterrupted time talking and you've got some no-no's about subject areas. >> first of all uninterrupted time means no cell phone. people get afraid if you say turn off your phone. i had a woman recently tell me she walked into a lingerie shop and said could you get me something that my husband is really going to be really interested in me, anything that looks like an iphone? that's what it's come to. don't talk about work, money and kids. everybody's talking about the business of life and it doesn't make us happier. go do new, fun things together. >> your second tip, show appreciation for each other. this seems simple but people forget. >> people forget, they don't do it. people say they're a good provider, they're a good parent. why should i appreciate them? that's what they're supposed to do. come on, we get married because we want someone to sum us up as good. that simple "i love you" and "i care about you" and a hug, they go a very long way, they make a big difference. >> you just mentioned it a

slurring and throwing basketballs at them at point blank range and even getting physical pushing some of them. the tapes allegedly were shown to university officials, not just the athletic director but the president of the university back in november by former director of player development, eric murdock, he was a former nba player. he said when he raised this issue -- >> last summer. >> loose summer. he says when he raised the issue, it cost him his job. the university said mr. murdock's contract was not renewed, he was not terminated. on the face of it, we'll wait to see what the university says today, but outrageous and you went to rutgers. >> i went to rutgers. i think a lot of the alum are outraged. everyone is outraged, you think how could something like that happen. sports program -- and you understand that coaches have to be tough with their players but it's another thing when it's abusive not only verbally but what appears to be physically as well. >> and it sets up an atmosphere that should not be condoned. >> right. >> i don't know how they didn't fire this guy on the spot.

>> again, you want to be really, really thoughtful. it's not -- the waiter has a lot of customers and maybe this wasn't the right restaurant for you to go to if you're watching your weight. what you want to do is start a rapport with the waiter and say everything looks amazing on the menu, that steak with the truffle butter looks outrageous. i'm trying to watch my weight and cut back on fat. is there any way it can be prepared plain without the butter or make a really simple substitution instead of the mashed potatoes can i have the side of salad. you don't want to reinvent the whole dish, that will make him crazy and not want to help you and he may not know exactly what is capable of coming out of the kitchen or not so keep it really simple but be really nice. less demanding you are. >> another kill them with kindness. quickly the doctor's office, we all think our problem is the most urgent there is. how do you get a quick appointment if they tell you the doctor is not available for a month? >> it is hard to get a quick

when you put everything back in, in clear containers that are leak proof so you don't have a mess. it looks nice and clean but you want to keep it that way. >> we have to pause, this is critical. we see the different terms on packaging. let's go through, packed by date, sell by date, use by date and best by date. do you believe the dates on the packages? >> the dates are correct except for packed on, that is no help. packing it makes no difference. when you have sell by that means the time that the supermarket can safely sell that, last day that can be on the supermarket shelf. it's good in your fridge for seven to ten days. if it's use by that's the guarantee if you use the food by that time it's safe and if you use it afterwards it's sort of at your own risk. probably the most helpful thing is best by. that means you can use it after the date in terms of the best date but you may lose some flavor but beware, nothing lasts forever and all bets are off if you open the package because then you only have seven days so if you have a package of hotdogs
