california attorney, kamala harris and represent mike honda will be at lunch. the press will leave early from sfo. yesterday, president obama flew into sfo and was whisked away to a cocktail party followed by a $30,000 a plate den aert the geddy mansion. he spent the night in san francisco. we have a crew there this morning. we'll bring you a live report coming up in our next half hour. new this morning, fresh evidence north korea may be pointing missiles across towards south korea. the u.s. sending more missile protection. tracie potts has more details. in a statement just out this morning, north korea's army says the moment of explosion is approaching fast. a south korean news agency reports one of kim jong-un's mid-range missile is on the move, raising fears of a nuclear attack.

north korea's missiles could reach no further than south korea but we are sending a team to guam just in case. >> we are blaming the u.s. for high-handed, hostile policy. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. new this morning, an armed robbery suspect is recovering after being shot by police in downtown oakland. the shooting happened just before 10:00 last night near the corner of jefferson and tenth street. officers were trying to arrest three armed robbery suspects when one of the officers shot and wounded one of the men. he was treated at the hospital and is expected to survive. in the south bay, gilroy police investigating a deadly shooting happening late last night near the intersection of chestnut and east seventh street. one man died from his wounds, the other is in critical condition. he is expected to survive. they have not made an arrest while they investigate a motive.

the man accused of kidnapping and killing sierra lamar is expected to enter a hearing. he is facing murder and kidnapping charges in the disappearance of the 15-year-old more than a year ago. lamar's body has never been found. garcia torres has also been charged with attempted kidnapping and carjacking and three unrelated attacks on women in morgan hill in 2009. the man accused of crashing his car into a south bay walmart. will be back in dort. he is facing ago sgratgravated , hid and rim and dui. he crashed his car into the walmart and attacked customers. we show you a silver crash where he drove a silver lexus into the capital premier car wash in san ho zach jose. he was not in custody, because

he had been out on bail. the sentence for the december incident will be later this month we have a follow-up for you on the smooth-talk thief that's been ripping off electronics. it turns out he may be taking his act to other parts of the bay area. the man walks into a store or office and poses as a customer and has long conversation with the employees. when they are not looking, he swipes their cell phones or tablets. south san francisco police say they have been getting calls about similar incidents in pleasanton, pet lieu ma, san francisco and los altoes. we are expecting to find out today if the pilate who steered an oil tanker into the bay ridge three months ago will face any punish. . >> guy klese was at the helm when it side swiped the person span of the bridge. the california board of pilot commissioners will hear a full report and determine whether he was at fault.

at times, stockton, modesto, that is pushing through the central valley. that did come through the bay area. some cities received a quarter to a half inch of rain. you can count on ponding and puddles out there. we did take up a 1 3/4 of rain. count on puddles, ponding in the con strucks zones in particular. let's get to the morning drive we have the stall on the 92, san mateo bridge, approaching foster city. they have it off to the side. as you can see, traffic is moving smoothly there, you can seat yellows and the oranges indicating slow-going at foster city boulevard again off of the san mateo brinl. they have it off to the side now. another accident on 580 has one lane blocked approaching castro valley at the boulevard. slow-going and the roadway flooded as you get through the

conditions t was treacherous getting up here from campbell to south san jose. you want to keep that in mind eve thoen there are not a lot of commuters to join you u are going to find pud ms, ponding. significant showers pushing in the central valley that came through the bay area over the past two hours. we have more on the way. let me zoom in and show you what we are working with. this mine of moderate rainfall is getting ready to hit 680. we have pretty heavy rain on the radar. through 9:00 a.m., widespread rain showers over the greater bay area. 10 to 4:00. we will see the showers taper off. partial clearing, lingering showers for tomorrow morning. maybe, just maybe, even for the joints game, the home opener tomorrow. very important games. we are going to have the forecast coming up for you in a second. 68, livermore. 64, concord. 60, san francisco.

assault weapons band in that state. it would also create a dangerous weapon offender registry and establish new rules for buying ammunition. this bill comes in response to last december's new town school shooting that killed 20 children and six teachers. connecticut's governor expected to sign the measure into law in a matter of hours. new this morning, they have found one of two teen hikers missing since last night in the cleveland national forest e was too confused and disoriented to tell them where his hiking companion might be. the two called for help sunday night after getting lost. rescuers say the mild weather both day and night offer a good chance that the other hiker is still alive talk about going from bad to worse, more trouble for a carnival cruise ship that has a history of problems. carnival says tugboats had to

pull the 900-foot "triumph" after strong winds broke the ship free from its moorings. all 800 people on board are okay. the "triumph" was brought to mobile after an engine room fire in february that stranded it's passengers off the coast of mex kay for five days. >> an l.a. hospital is using mobile technology to help the moms bond with their babies. the neonatal intensive care unit at cedar sigh nine uses face time to connect moms with their newborns. news that the hospital came wupt idea after seeing how anxious mothers became when their babies were in the nicu. it is not only good for moms but the babies too. >> their heart rate is nice and calm and they are breathing easier. >> she is trying to open her eyes. she hears you. >> the hospital considering

in just a few hours, the cal women's basketball team jetting off for the big easy. the first ever trip to the final four. the students will be there at 10:00 this morning cheering and wishing the lady bears good luck. the berkeley band and school cheerleaders will be out at the airport sharing more good vibrations for the team heading down to new orleans, as they call it down there. the bears play sunday against louisville. the winner moving on to play for the national title. >> go, ladies. 4:54. it is official, jimmy fallon taking over the "tonight show."

late night comedians having a field day with this news. >> i had to call "david letterman" and tell him, he didn't get "the tonight show" again. >> letterman also poked some fun at the change. his top ten list was titled. top things we will miss about jay leno. number four, can't remember the name but it's the one where jay is walking. number three, he is mom's favorite talk show host. number two, i won't be able to do my leno impression anymore and number one, watching him interview big stars who won't do this show. as for fallon, he jokes he was already out the door. >> don't worry. until february, our focus is right here on whatever this show is called. i just love jimmy fallon. as mentioned, he will be taking over that show, "the tonight show," in february right aft winter olympics on nbc. >> he has come through this newsroom e is so genuine.

valley area at the boulevard. you can see traffic slowing down as one lane is getting by at 580. more coming up in a few minutes. we have two hours to get through and get you out the door on time. laura, back to you. take a look at this, an australian pilot lucky to be back on safe ground this morning. his landing was caught on camera. watch it going great until the front wheel of the twin engine, see it dangling. it wasn't able to lock into place. the pilot was amazingly able to touch down on the roadway, just nose down skidding in. the plane slid for several hundred feet before stopping. you know what? even better. no one was hurt. no doubt, a little rattled, though. the cause of that accident is being investigated. >> you talk about lucky, that could have been disastrous, bang, boom. 4:57 right now. a battle over knives at sfo. we will let you know what's being done to stop the tsa's plan to allow knives and blades on the plane.

the heaviest downpour timeframe. we are going to see those between now and 9:00 a.m. the heaviest has already come through. we are dealing with a lot of aftermath. the 5 is getting slammed by that heavy to moderate rainfall. we are getting more of that lighter rainfall on the way to san francisco as we head through the next 15, 20 minutes. this is what we are expecting as we head through the day. moderate to heavy at times through 9:00 a.m. that means just in time for your morning drive. by 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the showers will be lighter. some parts of the bay area this morning have picked up a quarter of an inch, a half inch. we are still getting the tallies in. puddles, ponding, a factor for your morning drive. you want to take it easy. highs, nice and comfortable today. a little bit of sunshine later on. i'll time that out at your doorstep. we are talking about that weekend. i love hearing it. i can't say it enough. it is friday
