that had an accident earlier off to the side. that traffic is backing up way past the oakland coliseum. this is your route this morning. definitely want to try to find an alternate route in the next few minutes. you are going to have to make sure you have that patience. that red line, where the accident is, it extends past oakland coliseum by about a few, a quarter of a mile. you can see the typical slow spots. we have antioch slowing there as an accident has occurred early at the pass. in the south bay, 101 starts to slow on the northbound side approaching 680 and 280. you can see for yourself. brake lights are on. 680, 101 northbound headed into san jose. we will be having more coming up specially on that in oakland. >> most of us wake up to the rain. president obama waking up in san francisco this morning continuing his whirlwind fundraising trip through the bay

area. bob redell joins us live in san francisco with the president's plans for today. good morning. >> good morning. he is staying at the intercontinental hotel right here. this is where president barack obama stayed overnight. we will leave for two more fupd raiseers, a brunch and a lunch at private homes in atherton. to raise money to help get democrats elected to congress. hundreds of people protested near the two private homes in sea cliff and pack heights where he attended two other fund-raisers yesterday. not sure if he was aware. the crowds were kept at least 300 yards away for purposes of security. if he was within listening distance, the president would have received an earful on environmental kearns, specifically the keystone xl pipeline. many want him to kill this project that would transport oil from canada to the gulf of

mexico. >> it affects the people of america and it will eventually take away. everybody needs money. even the president took a pay cut. there are other options. that's what we are here to support just because the protesters were that far away from the president does not mean he did not get the message about the pipeline. the host of one of the fund-raisers, hedge fund billionaire and stanford grad, tom stier, happens to be a vocal opponent of the pipeline himself. happening right now, a little heads up, most phone calls heading into the fremont police department not going through for a short time with lines temporarily down as that system goes through some maintenance. the only calls that will get through are 911 emergencies. department's regular phone lines are now down but the police department is still reachable. also, 911 calls, those are getting through. those 911 calls are not affected during this outage. now, the department is going through a system upgrade. as the work is being done, the regular phone numbers at the headquarters will be down from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. the outage will include all dialing in, dialing out and voice mail services for the p.d., the jail and the animal shelter. if you call the regular numbers during the out annal, all you will hear is a busy signal. 911 calls will not be affected during this upgrade. if you do need to contact police, they do have an alternative nonemergency number. that alternative number is 510-791-4200. this is only going to last until 7:00 this morning. that's what they planned. the fremont police department is asking for the public to be patient with them as they make

it cob a game-changer. speculation is the company is making mobile its priority with the new smart phone. marla tallez joins us live at facebook headquarters in menlo park. a look at how the site is launching into the mobile market. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it is actually pretty convenient considering i am going to say right away that google is only about seven miles south of facebook in mountain view, because this new rumor, new facebook smart phone would run on google's android operating system. this is all speculation at this point. our business and tech guru, scott mcgrew, says he expects face boom will announce a new version of software for the phone. that would be manufactured by taiwanese htc. they would build it and facebook would provide the software. it is expected to run on google's o.s. here is a glimpse of what it could look like. you should be seeing a picture

after the yoga pantmaker had to recall 17% of all of its pants for being simply too sheer. lu lulu lem lululemon did not comment on it. arthur frommer has now reacquired the rights to public the book from google. google executives brought the brand last summer but they decided to pull the plug on it. some of the frommer travel content will still remain on google's web services, google plus wikileaks founder, julian s essange may have found an ally. they were critical against him. he said it was a mess. he questioned the legality of extradition. he has been holed up in ecuador's london embassy since

area as well. this patch is going to come through as we head the next 30, 45 minutes. we are going to track these showers all morning long. by 7:00 a.m., most of the heavy rainfall is out of the bay area. we will be dealing with light, spotty showers at least through 10:00 a.m. by 6:00 p.m., not a whole lot left. a little bit of lingering activity for tomorrow morning. not expecting much. that's good news our next chance for rain, saturday morning, between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00. that will impact areas north of the golden gate bridge. on sunday, another system dives into the bay area. thafr ace lo the there is a lot disagreement. there will be showers around. you may want to plan on possibly having to stay indoors. that chance of rain is going to be north of the golden gate bridge. that's about a 40% shot late

activity. we'll keep you posted. they are letting people drive on campus. they let people drive around and check things out. something to keep an eye on. we have an update and good news from southern california where rescue workers have found one of two teen that is were out hiking and missing since sunday night. the 19-year-old was found in cleveland national forest, about 40 miles east of san diego. firefighters say he was too confused and disoriented to tell them where he thinks his hiking companion might be. the two called for help after getting lost sunday night. rescue workers say the mild wet they are day and night offer a pretty good chance the other hiker is still alive. we hope it is best on that. search and rescue team still looking for a missing dock

good morning. we begin with a developing story as tension continues to build along the korean peninsula. new evidence north korea may be pointing missiles at the south and now the u.s. sending our very own missiles to defend the pacific in the light of the threat going on there. let's get straight to washington, d.c. where tracie potts is monitoring the developments. >> there are reports out of south korea from one of its news agencies that there is a missile on the move in north korea headed east towards the launching pad. that has south koreans concerned. also brand new this morning, reports from a statement from the north korean army. a spokesman saying the moment of explosion is approaching fast. they now have final approval to strike. they are blaming everything on the u.s. they would have a high-handed hostile policy. in addition, this is the second day in a row that south koreans have been turned back from that

northbound. things are starting to slow. this slowing will continue through palo alto for the next two hours. this is a typical, slow spot that we track usualljon. the shooing happening just before 10:00 last night before the corner of jefferson and tenth street. officers were trying to arrest three armed robbery suspects when one of the officers shot and wounded one of the suspects. that suspect was ultimately treated at a hospital and is expected to survive. officers not saying at this hour if they were able to arrest the other two robbery suspects. 6:35. an east bay city looking to get tougher on crime by using electronic license plate readers. they heard plans for a new system this week. they would be installed at entry points around the city to record vehicles coming and going. the system would be linked to a hot list of stolen vehicles.

sex offenders or other suspected criminals police are searching for. the public safety commissioner will discuss that plan in a meeting today. hayward has banned internet cafes until next year. it will allow two existing businesses to remain open. the city council agreeing to allow the businesses to keep their doors open after one of those businesses sued to protest that ban. the online games offer at the cafes resemble casino-type gambling and does want them banned. they have extended a moratorium on new businesses until february of next year. dialing into facebook, the smart phone speculation ahead of the social media site's big announcement. plus, gun law overhaul, how tragedy is prompting con could to get tough on assault weapons and ammunition. >> this is a live look from city streets in san francisco near

nbc miami telling us and reporting, two people were on board that single engine plane when it ultimately went down. good news being reported here, neither person believed to be injured. it was forced to land after declaring some kind of emergency on board. you can see all the smoke coming up from the helicopters. we will keep you posted as more information comes in. 6:39. lawmakers in connecticut have passed a new gun bill putting into effect some of the strictest gun laws in the nation. the legislation expands the list of assault weapons banned in the state. it would also create a dangerous weapon offender registry and establish new rules for buying ammunition. the bill comes in response to last december's newtown school massacre that claimed the lives of 20 children and section educators. connecticut's governor is expected to sign that measure into law later this morning. more details about a deadly

chestnut and east 7th street. one died from his injuries. another is in critical condition. he is expected to survive. no one has been arrested. a motive is still under investigation. sierra lamar expected to enter a plea in court. facing murder and kidnapping charges, the disappearance of the 15-year-old more than a year ago. garcia torres has been charged with attempting kidnapping and carjacking in three unrelated attacks on women in morgan hill back in 2009. a court hearing set for a seaside man accused of crashing into a san jose walmart and hitting four customers with a metal object. 33-year-old hamid zaid is facing aggravated assault charges as well as charges of being under the influence. we showed you exclusive video of a similar crash in december where zaid drove a silver lexus

into a car wash. he was not in custody because he was out on bail. he'll be sentenced for the december incident later this month. we have a follow-up on a smooth-talking thief that's been ripping off electronics from businesses in south san francisco and burlingame. it turns out he may be taking his act to other parts of the bay area. the man turned into the bay area. he has long conversations with the employees. when they are not looking, he rips off their cell phones or tablets. south san francisco police say they have been getting some calls in los altoes. 6:49. a temporary phone outage at the fremont police department will soon be over. crews have been working trying to upgrade the headquarters phone system. santiago joins us live. an update on the phone outage there. any problems? >> so far, we north hearing of any problems, laura. this outage seems to be just about over if things go as scheduled. let's say this. 911 calls were not affected at all during this outage. there is still a way for people to be able to reach the department. from 6:00 to 7:00 this morning, the regular phone numbers here at police headquarters will be offline. the outage will include all incoming and outgoing calls for the police department, animal shelter and jail. you will get a businessgy signal if you call during the outage. this is a result of the work that needs to be done as the department goes through a phone system upgrade. 911 calls will not be affected but if you need to contact the police department, there is an

alternative nonemergency number, 510-791-4200. the work is scheduled to take only about an hour, scheduled to end at 7:00. if with you hear anything different, we'll let you know. i'm arturo santiago, "today in the bay." it has been three weeks since bolts snapped on the new span of the bay bridge. caltrans is still trying to come up with a permanent solution. they aren't sure whether a manufacturing glitch caused those bolts to break. it is also possible the bolts were fattened too tightly. one possible solution. installing an exterior steel sheath to clamp together the bridge pieces. despite the setbacks, caltrans says the bolt problems should not delay the labor day opening of the new bridge we should learn more if the pilot that steered an oil tanker into the bay bridge three months ago will face any kind of punish. the california board of pilot

president barack obama staying in the hotel behind me, the intercontinental here in downtown san francisco. that's where he has been overnight. he is still there right now. a little bit later this morning. he will fly over to atherton for two more private fund-raisers. these are fund-raisers at private homes. there will be a brunch and a lunch. this is to raise money to help get democrats elected in the congress. a little bit later this afternoon, early afternoon, he will leave on air force one from sfo. he had a couple of other fund-raisers. this was yesterday here in san francisco at private homes in seacliff and pack heights. fund-raisers for house democrats. hundreds greeted him not necessarily with open arms much the crowds were kept at least 300 yards away for purposes of security. if he was within listening distance, the president would have received an earful about environmental kearns, specifically the keystone xl pipeline. many protesters want the president to kill that project
