say we formally inform the white house and pentagon that the u.s. ever escalating possibly and nuclear threats will be smashed by the will of the people, the united military, and cutting edge small, light nuclear strike means. the pentagon announced it would deploy an anti-ballistic missile system to guam in the pacific. hours later, the u.s. secretary of defense criticized what he called north korea's dangerous

rhetoric. >> some of the actions they have taken over the last few weeks present a real and clear danger. we take those threats seriously. >> but can the north attack the u.s.? u.s. officials tell nbc news north korea does have missile deliverable nuclear weapons but with a range of about 1,000 miles, unable to reach the united states, but seoul, just across the border, is certainly in range. but you wouldn't know it today. in south korea, there's absolutely no sign of public concern and people here have some advice for americans. don't have north korea scare you, they say. it wants the attention, it wants to scare you. still, until the 29-year-old north koreaen official threatens war, u.s. officials are prepared. >> outrageouses from comments and north korea for decades.

what's different about the tone and context this time around? >> what is different now is capability. the north koreans tested a nuclear device and now they're threatening to use it. they may thought be able to launch a nuclear war head to the united states, but they could launch one in the region that has a potential to leading to an arms escalation, a nuclear proliferation across asia. this is a serious threat. the south koreans however, still think the north is bluffing, and they're not seeing signs on the ground that north korea is preparing for a major military offensive. >> richard, thank you very much. >> now to connecticut with earlier this morning, lawmakers approved some of the tightest gun control legislation in the country. nbc's kristen welker is traveling with the president.

she's in san francisco this morning. good morning to you. >> good morning to you. president obama will spend the day fund-raising, but the first part of the trip was aimed at campaigning for stiffer gun laws. it's a different story in the states in the wake of the newtown tragedy. this morning, the connecticut state legislature passed some of the toughest gun laws in the nation, expanding background checks and adding 100 guns to the list of banned assault weapons. following the vote, reaction was swift. >> connecticut now with the governor's signature will have the strongest gun safety laws in the country. hopefully that is some measure of comfort to the victims of newtown. >> earlier on wednesday with federal gun laws facing an uncertain future, president obama ramped up pressure on congress. >> we must do something to protect our communities and our kids. >> surrounded by denver police

officers just miled away from the aurora theater where 12 lives were claimed last summer, the president called on congress to do what states already had, pass stiffer gun laws. >> every day that we wait to do something about it, even more of our fellow citizens are stolen from our lives from a bullet from a gun. >> despite the gridlock in washington, 60% believe laws covering gun sales should be more strict, but stiff opposition remains. on wednesday, there was a pro-gun rally in boston, and the nra continues their rally against gun control. >> a lot of times these issues in the states are more in their face, in the face of legislators. the governors are dealing with this every day. >> 87% of americans support expanding background checks, but even that faces a tough road in congress. as for connecticut, the governor

is expected to sign the legislation into law later today. the president will visit that state on monday and continue to press for more federal gun laws. >> kristen, thank you very much. in other news, one man is missing in alabama this morning after a powerful storm that also caused an already crippled carnival cruise ship to break free from its moorings. kerry sanders is at the port of mobile. good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. the coast guard spend much of the night in helicopters over the water and in boats on the water searching for this missing man. the 40-year-old who did not work for carnival cruise line but worked in a guard check here was literally blown into the water. the coast guard and divers will decide on an action to find his body, but the weather created another mishap for the carnival cruise ship triumph, which has faced a series of troubles. >> it was crazy. it was kriezy.

the storm came up fast with wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour. witnesses say the next thing they knew, the triumph, more than 101 gross tons and 900 feet long broke loose of its mooring and was blown into the mobile river. >> someone said, look at the carnival cruise ship, it turned sideways and a tug boat was trying to keep it in the center of the river, but it ended up pinning the tug boat against the bank. >> the triumph sustained what the cruise line called limited damages, but several dashes in the superstructure could be seen. for carnival, the nation's largest cruise company, it's been one misfortune after another. an engine fire left this ship adrift in the gulf of mexico in february. more than 4,000 passengers and crew were stranded and the to endure miserable conditions for five days. two ships recently experienced propulsion problems and

passengers aboard the carnival dream had to be flown home after a generator problem left it stalled in st. marten. they leave one observer wondering. >> don't know if the boat is cursed or what. i'm not going on it. >> why the cruise ship wasn't tied up properly to begin with will be part of the coast guard investigation. meanwhile, carnival cruise line says its thoughts are going out to the family of the missing man. they point out there were 600 crew members onboard plus 200 subcontractors and all of those folks are okay. matt. >> kerry sanders in mobile, alabama, this morning. thank you. there's new fallout over those disturbing practice videos that have now led to the firing of the basketball coach at rutgers university. >> natalie has been talking to people, students at her alma mater. >> still a lot of outrage at rutgers and beyond.

a lot of people asking wha university leaders knew and how they handled the situation when they became aware of the coach's abuse. a dozen faculty leaders claiming there was a cover up calling on the president to resign. but some players who endured the coach's abusive style are now coming to his defense. the fate of mike rice became the main subject of debate on the campus of 58,000. >> what was your reaction when you saw them? >> any coach who uses fear and intimidation is not a coach at all. >> i personally think some of the stuff he did wasn't even that bad. >> the shock over the practice videos showing an abusive coach rice still sinking in. the videos were shown to athletic director tim pernetti last fall, leading to a fine and three-game suspension. the university's president said he knew about rice's behavior but hadn't seen the videos. in a statement wednesday, he said yesterday i personally reviewed the video evidence

which shows a chronic and pervasive pattern of disturbing behave. . i now reached the conclusion coach rice can't serve effectively. still, some say it's not enough. state lawmakers plan to investigate why rice wasn't fired from the public university months ago. at the same time, a mob of media has swarmed rice's house. in a statement, he apologized saying, i clearly did not treat these outstanding young men with the respect they deserve. some current and former players say it doesn't tell the whole story. >> he's done a lot for me and my family. >> you had balls thrown at you a couple of times. did you at the time feel uncomfortable with his coaching style? >> no, not at all. i think the large majority of the players felt the same way i did. i don't think we were ever really uncomfortable or felt threatened. >> this latest scandal, in particular, the homophobic

slurs, has touched a rutgers, coming two years after tyler clementi committed suicide. >> we're focused on diversity and different sexual orientations and for him to be saying that is not representative of what we are and do here. >> as for the athletic director tim pernetti, he's facing a lot of heat. he acknowledges he was wrong in how he handled the disciplining of rice. >> we should clear something up. something we reported here and was reported widely by other outlets. the president of rutgers university did not see these videotapes five months ago when the athletic director saw them. according it a statement from the president, he only saw them tuesday night. that is a big difference. although he had ordered the investigation into the incident. >> he was briefed by the athletic director, but did he see the videos? >> he agreed to the disciplining. >> you're following another story, shooting at ft. knox.

>> a shooting of a man at ft. knox, a civilian army employee was shot dead on wednesday in an incident that officials at the base were saying was not a random act. they put the base on security lockdown. >> a possible new link this morning between the deaths of colorado's corrections chief and a white supremacist prison gang. they're seeking two men in connection with the death of tom clements, and both are believed to be associated with the so called 211 crew. evan ebal was a member of the gang. he's suspected of fatally shooting clements and another man last month. he was killed in a shootout with police in texas. >> in west virginia, a sheriff was shot dead outside a county courthouse while eating lunch in his car. the suspect was captured after being wounded in a shootout with police. >> in an attempt with solidarity with federal workers, president obama is giving himself a 5% pay cut on his $400,000 a year

salary, returning about $1,700 a month to the treasury. hundreds of thousands ofworkers face forced unpaid leave or furloughs if congress doesn't undo those cuts soon. >> and a major announcement from facebook today after the social network heads into new territory, phones. the company is unveiling a new android product today that has tech watchers buzzing that ceo mark zuckerberg is doing something he long denied he would, which is launch a facebook phone. he told our own matt lauer that option was off the table. facebook currently has more than 1 billion users and growing, many who access the app on their smartphone already. >> a check of the weather with mr. roker. >> a lot more severe weather down in florida today. we're going to be looking at strong storms. a risk of severe storms from tallahassee to key west.

and now a new report finds hair loss in men may also be linked to heart health. the journal analyzed results from previous studies, almost 37,000 men participated. >> this study's really important information because it tells us if we have a physical sign such as baldness, that might be an indicator of what's going on inside our heart. >> reporter: men at the highest risk for heart attack are those with vertex balding which starts ton the crown of the head and slowly spreads. while the reason for the link is unclear, checking patients with male pattern baldness could increase the ability of doctors to detect problems before cardiac episodes. >> this research doesn't prove cause and effect. but what it does show us is that there may be a common underlying mechanism such as inflammation, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol. these may be the things that lead to heart disease and baldness. >> reporter: an established link

that could give hope to preventing a hidden but dangerous problem. for "today," nbc news, new york. >> a "today" contributor and assistant professor of medicine at the nyu medical center. dr. raj, good to see you. guys are going to see this, get on the phone and call their cardiologist and make an appointment. is that the correct response? >> well, i always encourage men and women to talk to their cardiologist about the risk factor for heart disease and make sure glucose are under control. should bald men panic? i don't think so. this study did show a slightly increased risk when you think about overall numbers and it was particularly seen in younger men and those who had the vertex baldness, that means the top of the head as opposed to the front of the head. >> the earlier you lose your hair as a man, the greater the risk of heart disease? >> correct. >> and the more severe your hair loss, the greater the risk, as well. >> that's right.

when they broke it down by how much you were balding. >> we're talking about research that looked at 37,000 men, it's not insignificant at all. >> although, i should say this is a meta analysis, they pooled studies together. >> when they say there may be a link between inflammation and cholesterol levels in men and hair loss, you know, the logical side of me says wait a second, if i go out and start taking anti-inflammatories as a young man, i might reduce my risk of hair loss. and if i take statents, i might also reduce my risk for hair loss. >> it's interesting, one of the most common treats for hair loss started out as a blood pressure medicine. there are common links and the treatments, but i think it's still too soon based on the study to say all bald men should start taking an aspirin. >> all right. let's make sure we simplify it at the end. someone who suffers from male

first, her story. in an op ed in the "wall street journal" suzy wright writes about her disappointment. she writes, "colleges tell you just to be yourself. that's great advice as long as yourself has nine extracurriculars, leadership positions, three varsity sports, killer s.a.t. scores, and two moms." suzy white appeared perfect for the ivy league. an impressive 4.5 gpa, excellent s.a.t. scores. plus, a stint as a u.s. senate page. still, she was rejected by princeton, yale, pen, and vanderbilt. among the reasons she says she was rejected, "diversity. i offer about as much diversity as a saltine cracker." she writes, "i also probably should have started a fake charity, collecting donations for the underprivileged chimpanzees of the congo." she even blames her parents,

writing i noticed long ago that my parents gave up on patienting me. i've never sat down at a piano, never plucked a violin." still, the competition is steep. princeton accepted only 7% of its over 26,000 applicants this year. >> just because ewe an a stint and have great test scores doesn't mean you're eligible for an ivy league school. >> reporter: some call suzy a truth till teller. others say she's entitled. >> to those of you disgusted by this, shocked that i take for granted the wonderful gifts i have been afforded, i say, shhh, the real housewives is on." >> and suzy joins us now. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> that's one way to blow off a little steam in an op ed to the "wall street journal". >> thank you so much for having me, by the way, and also thank you to the "wall street journal" for printing my piece. what were you hoping to achieve? >> it's a funny story, actually. the price was written -- i got rejected from a bunch of schools in one day. any teenager, like millions of

teenagers, he was crying to my mom. she said i cannot hear about this anymore. just go talk to someone else. i called my sister, and i was crying. she was hysterically laughing, and she said go write this down. i did. >> if you read the article, it's funny. you have a sharp tongue and a sharp pen. to others it sounded cynical. you even anl acknowledge in the piece, you sound a little bitter. are you? >> am i bitter? well, i don't know. i poured my whole life for, like, the past five years into these college applications, and i was attracted to the sexy ivy league name. the overall point is anyone can relate to this. it doesn't matter what your dream school stshgs and all the feedback i've gotten from kids my age is only positive. >> they're saying this is -- you're speaking the truth. >> yeah. >> let me point out a couple of things that just popped off the page to me. you wrote had i known two years ago what i know now, i would have gladly worn a headdress to school, show me to any closet, and i would have happily come out of it." you also say, "i should have done what i knew was best. go to africa, scoop up some

suffering child, take a few pictures, and writes my essays about how spending that afternoon with kinto changed my life." for one thing, some people read this and may say you are being very cavalier about the importance of diversity. >> let's see, i make fun of two moms, having killer s.a.t. scores, the diverse -- it's a satire. that's the point. it pokes fun at things that are politically correct. that's what i was trying to do. diversity, i think it's a wonderful thing. i think it's great. i think all colleges want to take that approach to every college applicant. i do think in this day and age we're being judged on things that we cannot control as opposed to things that we can. >> do you think some students who do this volunteer work during high school are insincere or have at least dual motives? >> i'm sure some of them are. i don't begrudge people who do volunteer work. i've done a ton of volunteer work, and let me tell you, it wasn't just to get into college, but i do there's a lot of resume padding going on right now, which does -- just to fwet into

these amazing schools. >> what has the response been? >> the response has been mostly positive. i have gotten job offers, internship offers. i'm on the "today" show. it's crazy. >> actually, we asked our viewers what they thought. we put the op ed on-line. 53% said it's a whiney one-woman pity party. 30% said it accurately captures what college admissions officers expect these days. 17% said they weren't sure whether to take it seriously or be appalled by it? . 53% say, okay, you're blaming others, but not yourself. >> i want to -- did you call my grandparents? i don't think you got them in there. >> where would they come down? >> i think they would support me. in response to that, it was a joke. it was a satire piece. everyone my age whether they want to get into penn state their whole lives or harvard is agreeing with me that it's just a rat race nowadays, and it's such a business model as opposed to who is most qualified should get in, and it's a crap shoot,

installing an exterior steel sheathe to clamp together the bridge pieces. despite the setback, caltrans says the bolt problem should not delay the labor day opening of the new bridge. talking about the rain hitting the bay area pretty hard this morning. take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. that is the approach. certainly need the rain. meteorologist christina loren will have your forecast in a few minutes. but first over to anthony slaughter for a look at the roads. >> north bay seeing major slowing. from the golden gate, the drizzle definitely holding on. let's get you over to the traffic maps. we have a number of accidents on 101 southbound coming out of novato. that's where things slow all the way to tamalpais avenue. in fremont, traffic moving very slow. southbound 880 and even in the palo alto headed into san jose, you can see traffic barely moving.

"today's" baby bump. maya angelou opened up about her complicated relationship with her mother in her new memoir "mom and me and mom." she recently sat down with jenna bush hager who, of course, is preparing to become a mom herself. good morning. >> good morning, matt. people often ask dr. maya angelou how she became dr. maya angelou. her response, i became the woman i am because of the grandmother i loved and the mother i came to adore. >> both large and small. and to the fabric of my psyche that i can hardly distinguish where she stops and i begin. the life lessons are highlighted in my memory. like technicolored stars.

>> it was a complicated relationship from the start. >> you actually grew up with your grandmother. >> yes, ma'am. >> did you feel abandoned? >> oh, yes, when i was 3 and my brother 5. my mother and father wanted to separate but neither of them wanted children. my grandmother said, send them to me. they put us on the train. me and bailey with tags on our arms. >> your grandmother was like a mother to you, as well. >> mama. >> you called her mama? >> yes. >> so in some ways you had two mother figures? >> i did. when i went to my mother at 13, i didn't understand, i didn't really like her very much. >> and you weren't comfortable calling her mama? >> no, i wouldn't call her mother. >> but you did have another name? >> yes, i called her lady.

>> and she asked me why. i said because you don't look like a mother. and you're very pretty. and you act like a lady. she said, all right. and she took that. and i liked her for that. >> slowly, lady became more of a mom. >> she sparkled. she seemed to give off and with her energy, she said she'd shake like that. she says i keep my motor running. >> and her mom passed on lessons and words that would have a lasting impression shaping maya's life forever. >> i love when she said, baby, i'm thinking you're the greatest woman i've ever met. >> that was amazing. i was 22 years old. i was 22 years old and i sat there thinking, you know, she's very intelligent. she says she's too mean to lie. so maybe, maybe i am going to be somebody. >> maya learned what being a mother truly meant when she became pregnant at just 17. >> she never made you feel bad.

>> ever. ever. my son was born, she said remember this, when you step over my doorstep going out, you've already been raised. you know the difference between right and wrong. baby, do right. that's all. and this, don't let anybody change you from that. you can always come home. >> raising a son as a single mother changed maya's perspective on life. >> i found that it made me wiser and i had -- i had patience with him. the greatest gift i've ever been given was my son. >> maya learned to be a woman from the generations who came before. and although she lost her precious mother to lung cancer, those lessons will live on forever. >> i remember telling her you were a poor mother of small

moved a missile with considerable range. stop. al's off to the side giggling. anyway, north korea's moved a missile off to the east coast. the move came hours after north korea's military said it had been authorized to launch a merciless attack on the u.s. with smaller, lighter nuclear weapons. the u.s. meantime says it's taking threats from pyongyang seriously and is deploying a missile defense system to guam in the pacific. a run away carnival cruiseship is secure again this morning after it broke away wednesday from an alabama dock where it is being repaired. the carnival triumph is that same ship that broke down in february in the gulf of mexico. wednesday, it tore away in high winds, it then drifted down the mobile river and slammed into a cargo ship leaving a 20-foot gash in the side of the cruise ship. rutgers university is still under fire after wednesday's firing of the men's basketball coach mike rice. rice lost his job after video

showed him shoving players and yelling anti-gay slurs at them. rice said there is no excuse for what is on the tape. some faculty members are also now calling for university president to step down saying the initial three-game suspension that rice got was inexcusable. hey, major announcement from facebook today as the social network heads into new territory, phones. the company unveiling a new android product today that has tech watchers buzzing that ceo mark zuckerberg is doing something he has long denied he would, which is launch a facebook phone. in fact, he told matt a few months back that option was, in fact, off the table. facebook currently has more than 1 billion users and growing. and many of whom have access to the network on smartphones and tablets already. and check this out, it is called the festival of colors. observance meant to mark the end of winter gloom. and this video from youtube

settle down. >> you need to forget all the rules you know. forget what it means when he does xy and z and trust it's going to go in the right place. >> donna is the author of "the end of sex." and the relationship expert, good morning to you both. >> good morning. >> i have to start with you, with a book title like that, you get the first question. young people, confused about intimacy, unhappy. explain first what exactly is hook-up culture? >> well, it's -- let me differentiate between a hook-up. people tend to think of a hook-up as this very liberating thing. it's a brief sexually intimate encounter. anything from kissing to sex as most students will say. but a culture of hooking up is where the hook-up becomes the norm. to the point where young people don't see any other option. >> but there are people out there, young people who want the

old dating culture. what happens to them? >> well, i wouldn't say they want the old dating culture. >> more traditional. >> they want the option to date in a pretty old school way. so most of the students i talked to say that they like having the option to hook up, but they wish it wasn't their only option. and the reason why they don't date even though they really wish they could is because they don't have the skills. and they feel like no one else wants to. >> let me bring you in on this, is hook-up culture a bad thing? is it damaging? or is it just the next thing in relationships? >> you know, it's potentially damaging. i think you're right, it's the natural evolution of things. the culture changes and it could be potentially damaging because people aren't ready for the disconnect that comes with that instant emotion. okay. and whether it be a feeling of rejection or not unfulfilled, there's surprise on the back end where this is going to be a quick fun thing. but wow, now i feel bad. >> true, though, people are getting married later in life now. could this just be that phase in life that fills the space for

some people? >> i think so. it's a natural progression of things. but, however, if that's not your natural progression how you want it, you can opt out. >> how would that work? how does someone opt out of hook-up culture? you say the people who do have trouble getting out or finding that alternative. how should they go about that if they don't want that lifestyle? >> well, i think that's the million dollar question in a lot of ways. what's amazing is that you have so many young people who are saying they don't like living in hook-up culture and they wish for a way out but they can't see that way out. and they also believe they're the only one that feels that way. and so one of the first things i usually tell them is you are so not the only one that feels that way. all of your peers feel that way but they're afraid to say something too. know you're in good company. know if you go and ask someone out, they're probably going to be excited about it. >> you have some good tips for people who want to build a healthy relationship. you say they should set boundaries, be selfish, and

establish transparency. what do you mean there? >> absolutely. sharer beware. this is an age of instant information. everyone's got tons of access to you. it's not dependent on the amount of likes or re-tweets you get. set those boundaries, be selfish. if you want somebody to love you and only you, that's totally okay. if you want to do the hook-up thing, that's okay too. know what you're getting into. and be transparent. tell the person, hey, i know this is nuts, i know it's overwhelming. if you're not into it, it's totally okay. now you've set the stage. >> donna, very quickly. you say you're hopeful despite everything we've just said. why? >> well, i am. because when i talk to students and young people about this topic, i see so much yearning and so much launch for love and something other. and so, you know, just what, you know it's just said about how young people need to think about what do i want and how can i go about getting it? and remember the fact they do have a choice and they can make

good morning to you. it is 9:56 now. 9 i'm marla tellez. after all the wait and anticipation, it is almost here. in just a matter of minutes, facebook will be making a big announcement. that has a lot of people talking about a new smartphone. speculation is focusing on facebook announcing its own smartphone, one running on the android operating system. details will be released this morning at an event at the company's menlo park headquarters. we are getting a better idea this morning about the new apple tv. a market analyst says there are new details about the company's planned product. it will be a 60-inch set with a unique remote control.

white says his report is based on visits to the asian company that supply apple with its components. outside, pretty wet out there. christina loren taking a look at that forecast. >> you're a good sport for being out there this morning. most of that cloud cover is starting to clear a little bit and the showers are deteriorating. but we have unsettled weather in the area. as a result, we've got 1:58-minute flight delays out of sfo. otherwise, a pretty nice second half of the day. highs around 67 degrees in livermore. 65 for fremont. 62 in oakland. and 62 straight up in san francisco. a few showers linger tomorrow morning. >> the bay bridge toll plaza approach, jam packed. you can see lots of cloud cover, even a few patches of drizzle. even 880's been jam packed all morning long with wet roads. but things moving smoothly but lots of cars on the roads.

smart woman's guide to break-up and divorce. >> welcome. >> monique, you've been through this, so you're speaking from experience. what are some of the lessons you learned that you wished you had known beforehand. >> not to get stuck in that negativity. i know that there is hope for the future and there is a high road and to take the high road and to make the decisions for your kids, yourself, your family, your friends going through it. >> so many people get stuck, it was the lesson of moving forward. >> it was a 17-year marriage. tell us what happened after 16 years. >> i got that rhetorical question, how do you think we're doing? and i said, what do you mean how do you think we're doing? and a couple of months later i was the cliche, the 40-year-old divorced woman with two kids trying to figure out what in the hell just happened with my life. >> he found somebody else? >> he reconnected with someone else. >> and they later married. >> i think a lot of people do get stuck in the bitterness, that can take you down. >> absolutely. break-ups and divorces are very hard to go through, you have to

have hope and if you take the high road it can such a life lesson for you, for your family, for your children. >> there's nothing to be gained from not. you're just going 0 to compound all the problems, especially for your children, if you don't. >> absolutely. >> i remember looking through boxes of pictures when i was married. you look at that box and you think, i thought that was my life. you look back at all of your history and sometimes you can again play that movie over and over in your head. >> and that's a mistake for people to get stuck with that movie reel. and all of a sudden, happily ever after and all the hopes and plans are gone and you're sort of left thinking, what now. >> and you have to take time to mourn that. it's sad, and it's difficult, but life does get better. >> you look at the things the pictures and stuff and you go, was it all a lie? is there some healing to say no, those years were good years. and remember that? or is that, is that going to help you? >> i think everyone has their own truth.

>> yes, a lemon turkey cutlet. a little piccata style, if you will. we pounded out some turkey breasts, can you even buy them like this. we do a lot dredge on a seasoned flour, a little salt, a little pepper. it goes into our egg. >> any cut in calories except the type of meat we're using. >> lean turkey, lean, delicious. less on the fat. >> and put it in a little bit of oil in the pan. >> what kind of oil are you using, hon? >> a little blended canola oil. >> this will stay in the pan about three minutes on each side. the egg batter i feel i always keeps it so tender. you know sometimes you think it can get a little dry, you're guaranteed this is going to be delicious. >> i have some lemon sliced which we're going to put that write in here and these are going to brown up beautifully. >> soften, too. >> soften, brown. >> you actually end up eating

you cannot love that. >> unbelievably delicious. >> eggplant lasagna in the slow cooker. this is beautiful, we have sliced -- eggplant slices, we like to salt it a little, it brings out the bitter flavor that we kind of don't like. whole wheat, no boil lasagna noodles. layer a little marinara, you put your noodles in here. this is you can break them up and kind of fill in the crevices, we add our egg plant. >> this is genius. >> do you have to do this in this kind of pot? >> it's a slow cooker. it's going to cook for about -- four to five hours. >> look at it. >> it looks delicious. >> this is something, when i love the slow cooker. you set it, forget it. this is 394 calories a serving.

whirlwind is right, as you mentioned, president barack obama won't even be here in the bay area for a full 24 hours. this is a quick trip to the atm machine. right now, he's attending his third of four fund-raisers at a private home up the street from where we're standing right now. this is to raise money to help democrats secure their senate majority and in their opinion and hopes, take back the house during the 2014 midterms. this morning, president obama left the intercontinental hotel in san francisco where he had been staying overnight and headed over to christie field for a hop on marine one for the helicopter right over here to atherton. about an hour ago, his motorcade pulled up to the driveway of the home of liz simons and mark hising. that couple is hosting this morning's brunch. cost, $32,000 a head to attend. then the president will be off for lunch, heading
