home. the powerful four-step plan for adult children of divorce. and mary kelley, she's a psychotherapist specializing in step family issues. that must get dicey. >> it must. >> welcome to both of you. >> so when you're starting out, let's pretend like two divorced people start dating and they each have children. at what point do you start introducing the kids to the boyfriend girlfriend? >> i generally think it should be about a year from separation. >> oh. >> from separation. because i think the children need the time to adjust. if you rush it, then all the sudden that kind of sets up sometimes for that stepparent to feel like they were brought into their life too quickly. so a little more time and patience will help them -- >> a quick substitute for the mom or dad. >> exactly. >> and discipline becomes kind of a weird issue, doesn't it, when they're not your biological children but they're with you now. >> right. and that's the thing. i've been working with thousands of stepmoms and stepdads for the last past decade and it's really, really challenging as you're saying for someone to

come in and start trying to parent the child that isn't their own. >> is that a conversation you need to have with your partner long before the children are introduced, what are we going to do? >> for sure. >> who is going to be the disciplinarian. >> i find a lot of women, as a matter of fact, are left with the parenting role as a stepparent and the guys really kind of expect that. and they really need to have that conversation. say i don't want to be put in that roll. when your kids are here, you usually only have them half the time, with around. i don't want to be that heavy all the time. >> exactly. >> and to piggy back on that, stepmoms get so confused. they think, well, i'm a stepmother. the language is confusing. i'm supposed to parent. and then the kids resent it and the moms resent it. but the dads, as you said, they kind of expect their new wives to be like mary poppins and -- >> that's not fair, is it? >> it's a setup. >> and a lot of times isn't blood thicker than water too? >> yes. >> they'll expect you to do it, but then they take the kid's side. >> for sure.
