>> reporter: wind in san francisco took down a tree. you are looking at video we just received on the border of outer richmond and the east bay and pleasant hill. another tree landing on top of someone's suv there. an unpleasant is your advise for them. they will be waking up to find they don't have a ride to work. this wind is causing power outages. the latest numbers from pg&e on the peninsula. in the south bay, just over 1,000. in the east bay, 850. you have 4600 and in the north bay, you are looking at around just under 3300 customers without power. this wind is causing a lot of problems this morning. i can hear it on the treetops here as we are standing out here in the city of san mateo. we will be feeling it on the bridges as you are going into work this morning. that is the case with our

weather here. we do have a wind advisory in effect. my question to meteorologist, christina loren, how long is this going to last? >> looks like most of the day. good morning to you. i want to show you. nobody is spared this morning. the strongest gust usually comes through the higher elevation where we lack that friction. the east bay hills at the immediate coast. it is san jose that is getting hit really hard this morning. our gusts are really strong. the winds have been battering those trees overnight. we are expecting more to go down as we head throughout the morning. i'll be tracking that for you. i want to point out how strong those sustained speeds. this is your straight line wind out of the west. a 26-mile-per-hour gusting to 50, 60 miles per hour from time to time. like he said, that gentleman, he was not awakened by the wind. it wasn't howling where he lives. you want to keep that in mind this morning. make sure you give yourself plenty of time even though the wind didn't wake you up. it had been howling in parts of

the bay. we will be tracking that for you. i will let you know when we are going to get a break from the wind and we have a chance for rain. first, want to check your drive. good morning, mike. >> good morning, christina. the camera is shaking. i couldn't zoom in much more on the bay bridge. this span here. if i did, i know a lot of the folks are eating breakfast and may get motion sickness. a wind advisory for the bay bridge, pretty much any of your bridges. the richmond bridge at the top of the screen, a smooth, easy drive around the bay bridge itself. getting into san francisco, you see the topography. the map itself, yellow. heavy winds throughout the peninsula, along san francisco and even the golden gate bridge. that's pretty rare, guys. back to you. 5:05. new this morning, police are on the hunt for a gunman that shot someone at a doughnut shop in san francisco. the shooting happened at happy doughnuts on bayshore boulevard around 3:00 this morning. it is not clear if the victim is an employee or was a customer. the gunman, himself, was stabbed

before running away. a follow-up on a story we told you about last week where police have caught up with the smooth-talking suspect accused of stealing electronics from dozens of businesses around the bay area. they arrested nicholas anthony seemont on thursday. he would walk into businesses posing as a customer. wait nm employees were distracted and then grab their phones or tablets. he admitted to several thefts of iphones saying he did it to support his drug addiction. prosecutors are planning to file charges today caltrans is looking at major cleanup after hundreds of gallons of fuel spilled on the tracks saturday night. the train hit a large tank of metal. about 750 gallons of fuel gushed on to the tracks about a mile north of the san francisco station closing the tracks for hours. it is clean now. hazardous materials experts are

looking whether anything else should be done. it should not disrupt service. things are going to get busier at sfo. they are offering a new nonstop route to copenhagen, denmark. scandanavian airlines will fly the new route every day except tuesday. bait area is an important and growing region for its business and leisure travelers. a special ceremony will be held to celebrate that. >> it would not be fun to take off in these winds. christina loren, how is it looking? ladies, we have a really windy morning to get through. it is not just this morning. everybody keeps asking me, when am i going to get a break? all day long, we are going to see these very strong sustained wind speeds and strong sustained gusts. be ready for that this morning. temperatures are going to be comfortable. not that bad even with the windshield factor out there this morning. temperatures not too bad at all.

good morning. it is 5:13. who would have thought that google maps could be used for more than giving directions. david smith took different gaggle maps and patterned them into works of art. he has a piece for silicon valley using the bay area motif. he takes thousands of image and reconstructs them into persian ruglike designs to play on the tradition of weaving one's experience into a design. the end of an era could come today for fisker and its electric car. scott mcgrew, the company was doomed as an independent brand. ceo stepped down and laid off hundreds. we are a long way away from this scene when fisker was unveiling a new car at santana row.

the nasdaq losing 21 to close at 3803. sending it back to you. on friday, we got the jobs numbers. economists still scratching their heads over that one. we mentioned the big problem wasn't the number of jobs added, though that was pretty lousy, nor the unemployment rate or the participation rate. the number of people that indicate they want to be part of the labor force with or without an actual job. is that a low we have not seen in decades. an analyst says if you took the people that don't count as being unemployed, because they are not looking for a job, if you included them in the jobless numbers, you would have an unemployment rate closer to 11%. laura and marla? >> thank you very much. interesting. maybe people just want to win that big power lottery coming to california. we are experiencing power outages around the bay area. it is just booking out there. >> it is pretty dangerous. we want to make sure everybody

is aware of what you will be driving to work through this morning. dangerous conditions, strong winds, sustained 22 miles per hour in napa. it is not just north bay, the east bay hills, the places that typically get the wind that we're experiencing this morning. all the way down to the south bay from campbell to san jose. i saw numerous downed branches out there. you know what else i noticed, quite a few highway patrol officers on the highway. they are aware of what's happening. you want to take it easy and travel cautiously, specially if you are taking the little ones back to school. a lot of people heading back to school after spring break. we stop that clock at noon. we are getting the hot pink. that's where the fiercest winds are expected. you can see nobody getting spared at that point. we will start to see the winds drop off a little bit. i stop the clock at 10:00 p.m. a little bit more on the calm side inland. still, rather fierce at the immediate coast. when we meet back here, we are talking more like breezy to windy conditions, not the

howling winds we have to deal with. 69 in livermore, 70, concord, 65 in fremont. good morning to you in gilroy. the warmup is on. that is the weather story of the week. we are going to hit temperatures we have not yet experienced. we want to make sure you are ready for that. that will be wednesday. pull out the summer wardrobe, at least for wednesday as temperatures will be at 85. places like livermore, san jose, so easily touching on the low 9 o90s for the first time. thursday into friday, staying nice and comfortable. we get another chance for rain late saturday into sunday. 5:18, back, tracking your drive. good morning, mike. >> a windy drive. you are getting taken for a ride in some cases like over here. the san mateo bridge is the west commute over here. we're seeing a lot more traffic coming home from the east bay. the big concern is the wind, shaking the camera on this. mounted on the foster city side.

across the high rise as well as on the maps, we are talking about the area where we did have some problems. maybe we can move over to my next map here. we are looking over toward the east shore freeway. we will sort out the map situation and talk about the wind as you are coming down the east shore down past the richmond bridge and down to the bay bridge. all three of those have the wind advisory, folks. we are going to show a nice, smooth flow of traffic along the peninsula and down toward the area, across the bay. folks in the control have corrected my air error. it is not as widespread as a few minutes ago. advisories, all of your bay area bridges. highway e-4 at 35. just got word of a signal. you can get rerouted.

a tree down and some wires down specifically there. many other spots reported throughout the bay area. over 15,000 people total along the peninsula in the south bay. >> you and christina are very busy today. 5:19. you don't have to worry about getting your picture taken at the intersection in redwood city. they are pulling the plug on the red light camera ticketinging program. they are working too well. drivers are actually stopping at the lights and revenues from tickets have gone down significantly. hayward has made a similar move but not all cities are following suit. san francisco and fremont say they are still keeping their cameras up. a livermore family is alive after crashing their car in the sierra thanks to a quick kayaker. their suv veered off the road and hit a tree before crashing into the american river. a mother, father, and three children were inside.

kayaker, mark deviderio saw it happen and rushed into help. >> it is fortuitous they didn't land on me. i was kayaking right there moments before they plunged off the cliff and landed right there. >> he was able to get two teenagers and a 4-year-old to safety. a nearby fire crew was able to free the mother and father who were also pinned inside the car. all five family members are expected to be okay. the cause of that crash is still under investigation. look at that, though. 5:20. coming up, we'll show you which quarterback is about to step on the big screen as the famed johnny united. >> plus, hockey, underneath the california sun. details on the outdoor nhl game in the works. 5:23. monday morning. one movie the 49ers will hate to see. ravens quarterback, joe flacco will play johnny united in the upcoming film united we stand. he led the niners earning himself a mvp trophy. he will replay the 1958 nfl championship game, known as the greatest game ever played. filming takes place this summer. the sharks could find themselves in the middle of the nhl's outdoor game. the nhl is close to a deal for a game featuring the los angeles kings at dodgers stadium. no word on who the kings will play but it would be fun to see them face-off against the sharks if it happens. the game would likely take place on hockey day in america, which is in february. >> pretty cool. want to check the forecast now. talking about the high winds, when will they subside,

christina? >> they are going to be pumping all day long. good morning to you. good morning to you at home. wanted to start with san francisco where the winds have really picked up over the past 15, 20 minutes. you can see the giants flag violently whipping in the wind. look at the sustained wind speed all across the board. they are strong. san francisco seeing the strongest winds right now. anywhere between 35-40 miles per hour. up to 47-mile-per-hour wind gusts from time to time. that's strong enough to knock you around in your high-profile vehicle. you want to take it easy out there this morning. we are going to continue to track these winds and show you where the strongest, heaviest gusts are coming through. get your mind set on a rough drive to work. mike is back to help you through you it. that's the good news we are trying as best we can at least to warn the folks. we are showing them live pictures like this in san jose where we don't usually see a problem. the signals holding up. it looks like the equipment is getting blown around and breaking up our digital as well because of the connections out there. you see overall the south bay

hour officially from the national weather service. as we get out here, it feels like it might be higher than that, possibly in the 40-degree range. if you are driving a high-profile vehicle like we are, the sides of the utility van, you do want to be careful out here. it is going to push your vehicle around. even pickups and semis. anything that has a high profile, be careful out there this morning as you are driving about. as i watch my photographer's hat get blown off her head. i want to show you where we were at a half hour ago. this is hillcrest road in the city of san mateo. the family that lives there had the unfortunate luck of having a very large branch. that is a branch you are looking at, not a tree. that's a large branch from a redwood that came crashing down on the top of their house early this morning, waking them up from their sleep.

we've talked -- they are okay. >> it was just a big thud. that was it. i think i screamed. my wife screamed. it was just horrifying. we had no idea what happened. maybe one of us had fallen out of the bed, might have hurt themselves. it was amazing. >> all right. unfortunately, we lost the signal there. it really gives a good indication of just how strong those winds are out there. be careful before you head out the door, specially if you are headed over any bay area bridges. now, we do have a lot of power outages to talk to you about right now. these are some on your screen. the peninsula. nearly 15,000 homes without power this morning. south bay not as bad with 1100. east bay, 850. san francisco, 4600 and the north bay, 3200, a little over 3200 power outages that are expected there.

meteorologist, christina loren, she is busy in the weather department. look at the flag behind you there. flapping strong this is a little bit of a break. we are noticing this camera getting volted violently. let me show you some substantial wind gusts. they are coming in all across the bay area. 75-mile-per-hour wind gusts. category 1 hurricane starts at 74 miles per hour. an indication of how strong the winds are. we are counting on delays across the morning. i want to point out how windy it is right now and how windy it has been over the past four to five hours. lots of aftermath and debris on the highways. you want to travel cautiously. if you do drive a high-profile vehicle, coming up from campbell to san jose, i had to hold on as i was getting caught from strong gusts from time to time knocking my vehicle around.

high winds blew the flames on a neighboring home forcing them to call in backup crews to get it under control. firefighters say no one has been hurt and no word yet on a cause. 5:35. san mateo county wants a drone to help with patrols. the "oakland tribune" reports the county was approved for $70,000 in federal funds to purchase a drone. it is considered a low priority. it is not clear when the county would get that money. in order to qualify for federal funding, the drone has to be used for anti-terrorism purposes. an alameda protection. sf. >> the assembly judiciary committee approved a bill that would prohibit take ag borrower's wages for private student loans. it is the first of a set of

bills put by out. other bills include establishing a personal finance curriculum in k through 12 requiring students to go through financial counseling before applying to zones and a bill urnliging congs to apply for federal laws. another blow to ride-sharing companies. ride share and company. if they do not apply, they could be charged with trespassing. the order will be listed as the california public utility commission certifies the ride-sharing companies. >> if he are feeling lucky, a new place to put the lottery dollars. today is the very first day of powerball in california.

new developments on the korean peninsula. tracie potts joins us live. >> new this morning, the north says it is pulling away 50,000 workers from that joint industrial complex that's just inside north korea. they have been blocking south korean workers for days now, getting into it now. it looks like they may pull out all together as the united states continues to navigate this growing conflict on the korean peninsula. the u.s., in an abundance of caution, pulling back, not going through with the test that should happen in california postponing a d.c. visit for our

top military commander until all of this cools down. the white house would not be surprised if there is a missile test by north korea this week for a couple of reasons. john kerry is going to be there. our secretary of state, later in the week. a good opportunity from their standpoint. the anniversary of the birth of their founder, north korea has told foreign diplomates they need to get out. they wouldn't be surprised the white house said if something happened this week, possibly by wednesday. >> one to certainly watch. tracie potts, live from washington. new this morning, a rescue mission is now being called a recovery mission as rescue crews look for two children trapped underneath a home. this is happening in north carolina. the father to one of the children called 911 last night saying he was digging out the basement when a wall collapsed around the 7-year-old boy and girl. neighbors described it as a residential construction project. rescue workers say they do not think the children survived.

funeral services will be held this morning for film critic, roger ebert. he died last thursday after a long battle with cancer at 70. the public is being invited to attend attend attended to's memorial at holy name cathedral. the surgery cost him the ability to speak. he was a pulitzer prize winner and long-time movie critic. >> the governor is taking off for china hoping to bring billions of dollars into the economy by promoting the state's agriculture. more than 70 business leaders will accompany the governor on this seven-day trip. he plans to reopen a foreign trade and investment office in shanghai that was closed ten years ago. it will be financed by private donors. 5:44. the master's golf tournament

the bay area. high-rise sections for 84 and 92, watch that. chp giving overnight wind advisories there. 280 and 92, somewhere around the interchange, report of tree branches on the southbound side. that will be a concern. there may be a little traffic break. we will warn you about that as well as the significant alert. highway 84 at 35, trees and wires down in this interchange. we are going to end with one live shot to give you an idea. we will end with this shot. the volume building at 101. just into our newsroom, we told you about the two children trapped in north carolina. authorities have recovered the bodies of those two children trapped underneath the home in denver, north carolina. the father to one of the children calling 911 last night saying he was digging out the basement when a wall collapsed around the 7-year-old boy and girl. neighbors say this was a residential construction project. friends and family are remembering a former

photographer at the oakland tribune hit by a stray bullet and killed. police say 54-year-old lionel fluker was driving home from the gym last friday night when he was caught in the line of fire of the shooting. it happened near the corner of seminary avenue and macarthur boulevard. investigators say another man who was the intended target was critically injured but fluker did not survive. he was a freelance photographer from 1995 to 2007. friends say his two big loves in his life were his family and taking pictures. >> it is so sad to see a life like this taken away so senselessly. he loved his daughter and talked about her daily and was just very proud. we were all very proud of him because he was such a good guy. >> there is a $15,000 reward for information leading to the shooter or shooters. 5:49. santa clara city leaders are thinking about what to do with

230 acres of land across from the new niners stadium. a commercial and residential developer is eyeing the property, which is now home to the city's golf course and a bmx track. on tuesday, the santa clara city council will consider entering into an exclusive negotiating agreement with the developer to explore other options for the site. >> i imagine a mix of uses, retail uses, jazz clubs, hotels, everything that you would want to have near a stadium site near a convention center. it is just another part of our puzzle. it is such a large piece. >> if the city gives the go-ahead, still a lot that needs to be done with zoning and environmental work. ground-breaking would still be a couple years away. >> 5:50. are you ready? the stones rolling into town and you can get your hands on tickets coming in today. >> wall street under a lot of pressure this morning. a correction could be coming. we'll take a look coming up. has oats that can help lower cholesterol? and it tastes good? sure does!
