cabrini parish. he violated his probation, he admits but he had a letter from the diocese giving him permission to be there. the diocese says that letter was not authorized and should never have been written. a bizarre scene in the east bay as shoppers come face to face with a man who had been shot. he walked into the grocery store around 8:15 looking for help. contra costa county officials say he was shot somewhere near valley view road and allison flan richmond. it is unclear when the shooting happened and how the man got to the store. his condition is still unknown. we have an update as police are possibly getting closer to the person who shot and killed a san jose paramedic. officers say they have recovered a car linked to that crime. somebody shot and killed quinn boyer on keller avenue in oakland hills last week. a witness reported seeing a suspicious car in that area on

the very same day. investigators not sure if that shooting was part of a robbery, an attempted carjacking or simply road rage. so far, no arrests have been made. >> a month after a man was crushed to death in a bart station elevator shaft, investigators now know who he is. they need help finding his family. they identified him as 42-year-old david thomas. thomas was crushed by an elevator at the montgomery bart station. police say he was homeless and may have been living in that shack. they are still trying to figure out where thomas is from and whether he has any family. still, not clear how thomas was able to get into that elevator shaft. >> an autopsy will take place today that could help identify a burned body that was found in south san jose. the victim was so badly burned. police still do not know if it is a man or a woman. they discover the body near carl road near an on ramp. investigators believe the person

was homeless and was kampicampi out. the south bay person that admitted stealing from nuns pleaded guilty to fraud. she said she used her position to steal nearly $50,000 in cash and buy more than $50,000 worth of jewelry, purses and other personal items from the home shopping network, qvc. she could face up to 20 years in prison and $1 million in fine. >> a police officer was arrested for an off-duty incident in merced county. he faces misdemeanor charges for obstructing an officer according to gilroy dispatch. no word on what led up to the charges. gilroy p.d. is conducting its own investigation. it is 5:05. we were talking about it yesterday. one of those picture perfect

a carjacking suspect crashes right into a fire hydrant causing water to shoot and spray high into the air. "today in the bay's" marla tallez live near union and south vanette avenue. good morning. >> reporter: this is why it is never a good idea to steal a car and try to run from police. you are likely to take out a fire hydrant like this person did. allen is going to zoom in to give you an idea. you can see the yellow crime scene tape thachlts with are the fire hydrant used to live. it is completely gone, tore out of the street this morning. ended up crashing right into the wall over there. the scenes ayou just saw is clear. a tow truck was here when we arrived, took away the car. chp's lead agency handling this care. this is what happened. the car lost control, crashed into the fire hydrant. the aftermath shooting from the hydrant at union and van ness. we are also told the car hit a

muni bus before it crashed. no word on any injuries. by the time officers got here, the suspect or suspects had already taken off. they could be hurt, though, judging from the damage done to the car. the air bags deployed, the whole bit. this all started. this chase started at 3:05 this morning, less than two miles away at mission and south van ness. chp tells me officers ran the place, quickly learned the car had been car jacked out of modesto. officers are in touch with the police. officers lost sight of the car a few minutes into the chase and found it crashed into this fire hydrant a minute later. the suspect is still on the run. i asked the chp officer why they ended up running the plates in the first place. he could not give me an answer. i'm waiting to get that information for you this morning. i can tell you the scene is clear at union and van ness. that means no impact to local traffic. for now, live in san francisco, marla tallez, "today in the

"today in the bay." >> from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. just a wild police chase in san francisco which ends in dramatic fashion. a carjacking suspect crashes right into a fire hydrant causing water sprayed high in the air. "today in the bay's" marla tallez is live near union and south avenue with what led up to the crash. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. i was just on the phone with california highway patrol. they are helping out the san francisco police department looking for two to three suspects that took off from the scene. those are the people, two to three people that were in this car when it came crashing down van ness and slammed into this fire hydrant at the corner of union and van ness. completely wiped out the fire

hydrant, took it out of the sidewalk and the aftermath was just just water shooting up into the air. the geiser of water. the tow truck was on scene taking the vehicle away when we arrived on scene. the call came in at about 3:05. the chase started less than two miles away down van ness on south van ness at mission street. chp officers tell us san francisco police ran the plates because they saw this car was drivinger r driving eraticily. this car started and ended less than two miles away. the scene has cleared. no impact to local traffic. you can see the crime scene tape up on the corner. no impact to local traffic. the officer tells me san francisco police have set up a perimeter in this area looking for those two to three suspects. no one appears to be hurt in this accident but, again, the search for these people is on

this morning. for now, we are live in san francisco. marla tallez, "today in the bay." new this morning, a violent and chaotic night in vallejo sends four people to the hospital with gunshot wounds. a hail of gunfire erupted about 10:00 at the corner of minidrive and echo submit road. they found two cars crashed in the area. near the wreckage, two people shot. one of the cars riddled with bullet holes. two others hit but tried to run away but collapsed about a block away. all four people are expected to be okay. no motive for the gun fire. >> i don't believe this was your typical random shooting but, again, we're not sure exactly who was involved in it. police say as many as 25 shots were fired from different handguns and rifles. no one else was hurt on the block. east palo alto police shoich forg a drive-by shooter that shot somebody walking down the

street. a 29-year-old man was shot in the head before 8:00. he was walking along azalea drive knew pulgas avenue when a dark-colored vehicle pulled up and somebody fired a handgun. that man is currently in stable condition. so far, no motive reported for the shooting. 5:33. a bay area middle school teacher is under investigation accused of hitting a student during class. "today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live with a cell phone video that led to that investigation. >> reporter: good morning. we have looked at this cell phone video a few times. it runs just under two minutes. it shows some students seatnd a classroom. the teacher is walking around waving a long, unknown object in her hand. the video was obtained by

claycord.com. she was allegedly hitting one student and threatening others. there is noise going on in the background, giggling but you can't tell. they say they capital share details with the public but the teacher is on administrative leave as we investigate the matter and take all necessary steps to ensure students have a safe and productive learning environment. this incident happened just before spring break. the parents have a toddler who allegedly -- the toddler was tied up at tape at a pleasanton preschool. they are suing the school and the teacher. the former teacher tied up their daughters hands and feet at center point preschool. the incident, they claim, has caused the 2-year-old to have panic attacks and can't sleep for more than a few hours at a

time. they are reviewing that lawsuit. hundreds of students at an east bay high school will be tested for tuberculosis. they are conducting the test after a student was diagnosed with an illness last month. that student has since recovered and is back at school. health officials say about 200 students had contact with the infected student and could have been exposed to t.b. it is the first case on the school campus in four years. it is 5:35 right now. we go back to christina loren. you say, not quite as nice as yesterday. >> not if you like the warm weather. jon and laura, good morning to you. the fog has returned. indicative of a strong onshore flow back in the bay area. i want to show you how much cooler it is to start the day in fairfield. 10 degrees. oakland, 11 degrees cooler. you are in the 60s at this point yesterday. san francisco is running 7 degrees cooler. you might want to break out that coat. we will see the 60s just about

in washington, d.c., lawmakers getting ready for a big-time fight over stricter gun control laws. as senators get set for initial votes, a new nbc poll showing a drop in public support. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is live on capitol hill with the latest. good morning. jon, good morning. that poll came out while you were sleeping. 55% supporting stricter gun laws. there was a drop in february, about the same as january right after the sandy hook shootings. now, will lawmakers consider that as they take a look at this first vote today? not a final vote but whether or not they will let it go forward. republicans had threatened a filibuster that would have stopped this legislation in its tracks essentially but other republicans say, not fair. we need to give it an up or down

vote. it looks like that fill buster may not happen. the latest is a compromise by two senators, joe manchin and pat tumi that would allow for a gun show background at shows at online but not in private party sales. that's gaining momentum on capitol hill. police are asking for your help catching suspects want ford a series of robberies. police released this surveillance video hoping someone might be able to identify the two gunmen. san leandro police believe the suspects are responsible for seven robberies since january. a video of the robbery at the grocery outlet. one suspect holding a gun to the clerk's head and firing a shot into the ceiling. police want to make an arrest before someone gets hurt. >> their behavior may escalate. it is a repeated pattern. they have had a couple of stores more than once. >> they are targeting large stores like grocery outlet and home depot. tlar there is a $20,000 reward. chuck reed is getting the brushoff from bud selig, baseball commissioner. he wrote asking for i apersonal meeting to talk about what's

a big victory for the organizers of the burning manifest tifl. the nevada legislature voting to prevent the county from imposing rules and fees on that festival. burning man draws more than 50,000 people to the black rock desert each and every year. they wanted to charge festival organizers a per-head fee to cover the costs. the state legislature says that's not going to happen. the event is on federal land.

the city needs help naming the little ones. their nest is on a ledge on the 18th floor of san jose city hall. kids between 5-18 can submit names for the little falcon chicks along with a piece of artwork, an essay, video or song to enter. all you have to do is visit sanjoseco.gov. all must be submitted by april 26th. check this out. a very close encounter for a man fishing from hawaii. did you see it? a 10-foot tiger chark jumping out of the water trying to steal the guy's tuna? he was trying to reel it in. it bumped kayak and he snatched the fish. >> i can't imagine how fast his heart was beating.

>> reporter: i want to start by saying the search for the suspect is on. more than one person. officers tell me they are looking for two to three people that were in this car when it came barreling down van ness, a very popular street in san francisco. it came barreling down. it crashed into the corner of union and van ness, taking out, completely wiping out the fire hydrant there. some crime scene tape up. the aftermath produced good video of water gushing out of the hydrant. the car involved is a newer model nissan versa. by the time the police got heer here, the suspects were gone. it started two miles away at mission and south van ness after 3:00 this morning. the call came in at 3:05. the car was driving erratically. they ran the plates. they found out the car had been car jacked out of modesto. stolen. that's when the chase began and ended in dramatic fashion.
