today residents are clearing out. a monster twister caught on tape. >> it's coming toward us. >> reporter: one of three to hit the south. part of a storm system ta cut a path of destruction from texas to the carolinas. at least one person was killed in mississippi and several more seriously hurt. high winds left thousands without power here in huntsville, alabama. strong gusts also tore the roofs off of homes and took down a 100 foot tree in the house. fortunately the owners were in the basement. in kentucky the roof was ripped clean off of one home. hail was a hazard for drivers outside of atlanta and in northwest georgia heavy gusts battered homes and cars with debrie. >> the roof of the building wrapped around trees like it's nothing, like it's paper. >> reporter: a wooden beam shot through the roof of one man's

al is off today. dylan dreyer has more on the storms and a first check on the forecast. >> good morning. we are going to see more severe weather but on the backside of the storm we had a lot of snowfall. look at these shots coming in out of fargo, north dakota where the wind was gusting. most of north dakota ended up with eight to ten inches of snowfall. the roads were covered in snow and ice. also in minnesota, winded up with a foot of snowfall. south dakota had 30 inches of snow. we have severe storms in the forecast today with wind gusts up to 60 miles an hour. today it is mostly across the carolinas. you can see where tornado watches are still in effect along with heavy rain that will eventually move to the northeast by late this morning and in to this afternoon, as well. that's a look at your local forecast. we'll get to your local forecast after this message. t after this.

major gun control legislation in decades, this after more republicans then expected to agree to debate a proposal on new federal background checks for gun purchases. david gregory is moderator of "meet the press" good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. >> the vote was 68-31 to move forward and debate this, a stronger show of support than a lot of people expected but it would be presumptuous for supporters of the legislation to think they've got it made. >> absolutely because the feeling among republicans was, don't stop the debate. that would be political suicide for republicans to not let the debate go forward so you have a lot of people voting to let the debate happen who are not expected to be there in the end. democrats behind this bill are literally going down the list, you think i can keep that person along? a lot of this has to do with the gun lobby. >> there seem to be two schools of thought on the nra. some people think that lobbying group has been weakened in the wake of the newtown tragedy, yet you had two democratic senators

who voted against debating the bill who the nra said we're keeping a scorecard how you vote. in your opinion is the nra weaker or still as strong. >> still as strong without a doubt and facing new difficulties. i spoke to a democratic senator who said the nra is being tea partied in this whole fight meaning they're facing a tax from their right, from other elements of the gun lobby putting pressure on them to what's called score the bill, in other words give a letter grade to watch how lawmakers vote on this. i spoke to a democratic aide who has a boss up for re-election, the more gun votes the better, the more we can vote against the measures, they will be safe for a re-election fight. reporters are looking for cover from the nra. will they agree to look the other way, not come out for the background check bill but not penalize senators who vote for it. that they feel is their only chance. >> at least there's debate. when you look at the bigger

picture and the fact that lawmakers are taking on gun control, taking on immigration and debating deficit reduction and the budget, does it send the message that perhaps congress has heard the criticism, and they're actually getting down to business? >> i think it's an important point, matt. there's a feeling in washington among democrats and republicans that the public is tuning them out because they don't think they can do anything big so on all thosie issues you mentioned there's the prospect of doing something big. on gun control it's not complete, certainly not those who want to see greater regulation but a background check bill that could ultimately perhaps get through the house that would still be seen as an accomplishment. >> what do you have sunday? >> we'll talk about immigration in addition to the other things. marco rubio spear-heading the republican expert and senators gi gillibrand an lee. >> thanks much. we have new details on who may have been behind a private

conversation that was recorded at the campaign headquarters of senate minority leader mitch mcconnell. chuck todd has the latest. a story of intrigue. >> it is. authorities believe they may be close to figuring out the whodunit on who made that recording of mitch mcconnell and his campaign team who were strategizing about how best to defeat actress ashley judd. it's two liberal activists at the center of the speculation. dominican kentucky democratic official jacob conway heard the leaked secret recording of mitch mcconnell and his campaign team on the "mother jones" website. he knew who did it. >> i knew what was in the tape and i heard the "mother jones" article and says i know who it is. >> the two activists bragged to him back in february about what they had captured just hours after recording it at mcconnell's headquarters. >> they weren't trying to make money or get famous. i don't think they were planning on using it. >> reporter: conway who was

interviewed by the fbi thursday says he didn't think of telling anyone about the recording when he first heard about it as he was unaware the two activists had potentially committed a crime. >> i did not want their silly mistake, their overzealous behavior to hurt the party which i love and care about. >> reporter: one of the men conway identified, sean riley through an attorney denies involvement in the recording but admits to being a witness. >> he is not a suspect in this investigation but like i said, he's been cooperative with the investigators and we don't want to compromise their investigation. >> reporter: as for the other activist conway as was involved in the meeting when staffers were discussing the possibility of running against ashley judd, neither he nor his attorney have returned calls to be inning news. web the tapes first surfaced tuesday mcconnell openly speculated he thought progress kentucky was behind the recording. >> apparently they also bugged my headquarters, so i think that pretty well sums up the way the

playing around before one of them was struck and killed. that teenager's name and age have not been released. crews have just cleared a multicar crash involving a bta bush that snarled up traffic. this was in south san jose on northbound highway 85 at southbound 87. all four of those lanes were blocked at one point. mike inouye has told me, all four of those lanes are cleared off. a couple of cars an the bus were on the side of the road for an hour. no injuries have been reported. for more on this and a lot more traffic, let's check in with mike and see the latest. we had two highways in the south bay affected. we will show you the maps. south 87 was very slow approaching 85. it has cleared up very quickly. some mild slowing approaching that interchange. north 87 has some work to do. it is now slow creeping up toward 87 recovery. the real-time census shows you. a considerable amount in the last few minutes. the rest of the south bay moves

with an elephant that was injured in a drive-by shooting in mississippi. this morning, she is recovering in springfield, missouri. nbc's kerry sanders is here with more on that. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. veterinarian tells me carol is lucky to be alive. you can see her here this morning, she's awake, spirited and has been hungry. i've been feeding her some apples this morning. if you look behind her ear you can see the spot, it's kind of hard to see, you can see the spot where she was shot. doctors say she should be back to her old self in about eight weeks. for an elephant, carol's always been the cute one. >> sometimes a little obnoxious but mostly adorable. >> welcome to the greatest show on earth! >> reporter: she's among the star performers in the ringling brothers barnum & bailey circus. on tuesday the circus was in tupelo, mississippi. carol's life almost ended.

stephanie, good morning. >> good morning, natalie. patients in the u.s. spend more on prescription drugs than any other country in the world. in most cases it improves their health, keeps them out of the surgery room and out of the hospital but paying for medicine can be the most expensive out-of-pocket health cost for americans. pills, pills, pills. in the next month nearly half of the population in this country will take some kind of prescription drug. >> next to minority, this is my greatest expense. >> reporter: single mom sherri thomas has three teenagers, two diagnosed with autism and a.d.d. she says they need their prescriptions to lead normal lives but worries she can't keep up with the payments. >> i'm one of those people that's paying more than i can afford just to get the basic medication that my kids need. >> reporter: and sherri is not alone. according to the cdc americans spent a whopping $45 billion out-of-pocket on retail prescription drugs, an estimated $4.5 billion was spent on

sleeping medications, $7 billion on drugs to treat adhd and $11 billion on antidepressants. in some cases the enormous costs are linked to brand name drugs but why are they so high? pharmaceutical companies say they have to be because new drugs sore expensive to develop and manufacture. >> takes about 10 to 15 years from the laboratory benchtop to a pharmacist's shelf and costs on average about $1.2 billion to $1.5 billion. >> reporter: name brands are then protected by patents to both recoup costs and make a profit. the good news in recent years for consumers is that many of the popular name brands have gone off patent. >> when a drug comes off patent and a big brand name drugmaker no longer has that exclusivity, usually that means the price goes down, the generic person no longer has to do all that kind of marketing and people will flock to the generic version because the price is cheaper. >> reporter: still, americans struggle, especially those who

are uninsured. over 24% said they did not get prescription drugs due to cost in 2010 versus almost 7% of the insured who say they don't have enough money to pay. adding to the problem, pharmacist alan shnorr says he has seen prices jump in the last year and he's getting stuck with a lot of unclaimed prescriptions. >> they have two prescriptions and it's $100, it's a lot of money for the working class or any class. >> reporter: experts fear although unclaimed prescriptions save money in the short term t leads to higher health costs down the road. >> eventually it's going to price me out and i don't know what i'm going to do. i want my kids to graduate college yet they need this medicine to help them get there as well. >> the cdc released a new study showing other strategies people use to keep their prescription drug costs down including skipping doses, delaying prescriptions, or turning to alternative medicine, all potentially having an adverse effect on their health.

natalie? >> stephanie gosk, thank you. dr. gail saltz is a skik psychiatrist and "today" contributor and bertha coombs from cnbc. gail, we've been talking about how overprescribed we are as a nation, people looking for a quick fix. when people are suffering more from anxiety and psychological problems, how do you know when medication is the solution or the right answer for you, when should you seek medical help? >> i think if you're feeling overwhelmed, you're feeling like you're having stomd you realymp really need to see a mental health professional. they have to look at your history, they have to look at all of your symptoms. they have to look at the entire collection of things to determine do you actually have major depression, and then the question becomes, do you have mild to moderate major depression where medication does no better than placebo and therefore you shouldn't be receiving medication or you have a severe depression which carries a 15% suicide rate, you should be getting medication, so get a proper evaluation and know

that therapy and learning coping skills are every bit as important and sometimes better than medication, which really would lower your cost in the long run. >> and bertha, you have some tips on how people can reduce the cost of their prescription drugs, where do you start in. >> if it's something you need, generics is where you're going to get the most cost-effective medication and it will be the same as the brand name. if you do have to take a brand name, one of the things you should consider is making your prescription longer, maximize how you get that prescription filled rather than every 30 days where you have to have that $5, maybe $10 copay, do it 90 days, get a 90-day prescription and only paying one copay. also shop around. the different pharmacies have different pricing strategies and in some cases you might want to do mail order through your insurer, and also maybe try to get some sort of lower price as

truly feminine means being soft and receptive and look out, here it comes, submissive." are you saying that women need to serve their men better to please their men better? >> i think the idea of living with a partner is how can i make their life better, so if i'm the woman and he's the man, yes that's the dynamic. i'm willing and i choose to serve my family and my husband, because it creates a dynamic where he is then in fact acting more like a man and masculine and treating me the way i want to be treated which is i'd like to be cherished and like someone to look after me as well in that role and i think because women have the ability to set the tone that the ultimate strength and showing real power i believe is creating that environment. i don't think it's a sign of weakness. i think it's a sign of strength. >> you're not being submissive as you say in weakness. >> you're not saying dinner on the table at 6:00. we're not talking about that. i'm saying i'll lift up my side and do it happily and also the

expectation would be or the hope would be that he comes with the same attitude, but yes, is it a form of service? absolutely, but i think it's the place i can express that part of myself and my personality. >> do you think more women need to do that when it comes to trying to even have it all as we say? >> well, there is no having it all but i think the idea is, women have to understand what's going to make them happy and if they choose and want to have a family and they want to empower their male partner that this would be a way to do it. the idea of the book is to figure out how do you make yourself happy, because no one is going to make you happy and you can't live through your children, and then within that, how do you empower and make the lives easier of your family members. >> you have to choose, though. >> you do. >> the whole lean-in conversation i think that we've heard recently with the book by sheryl sandberg the idea that women can have it all, they can get to that point. it obviously comes with some sacrifice. >> i think the idea for me in

what caused it. you can see the fire went to two alarms, destroyed this home. there were seven people asleep at the time, two adults, five children. they all got out okay. but it was by dumb luck. a neighbor across the street happened to be out front of his home getting ready to go to work. when he saw the flames on the left side of the house, he went over, started knocking on the door. he knows he woke them up because when theta out they was groggy, disoriented. he pointed out, if he hadn't been there, it's quite possible they might have been trapped inside. when he got them out, the house went up in flames very quigley. he was amazed how quickly it went out. all the people are okay, one family dog unaccounted for. fremont fire, no injuries at all. reporting live, i'm bob redell. laura, back to you. >> another update in half an hour. hope to see you then. ♪

times when -- >> yes, but you have to reference things to give examples why you have that opinion. but again, i think sometimes sharing honestly but with you know, a little bit of privacy, and i try to make it more girlfriend talk. >> it is. >> instead of you should do this, versus well this is what i've discovered. >> a lot of people when they hit a bump in their marriage or a big pothole just sort of throw in the towel and you thought about that, too, didn't you? >> my lus and i were, we were married a very short time, three or four years at the time and we went through a big challenge. and we, we had actually considered divorcing and because he was polite in his own way, he said you know, can you file. and then we both realized, for a number of reasons that it was something worth working through. but you know what it is, too? it has to do with that you don't come with a skill set. and it's learning to move with your partner and around them and also realizing separately, i realized, too, that that's a big

theme in the book is self-responsibility and no one -- no husband is going to come and make you happy. no one rescues you, it's your personal responsibility to make yourself happy and your partner, for that matter. think that was something that was important to learn. and as a woman, not take things so personal. we take things so personal. >> and you're honest about the fact that when you did get back and had two children, you still struggled. you realize this is the person that i have the potential to be happy with for a long, long time. >> right, and that's an important thing. when you have that opportunity with a friend or partner. you're fortunate, so it's worth it, it's a foundation of the things that are there. and i'm reminded, too, to try to have some fun. >> well, good, we enjoyed visiting with you. and you're also going to be on "rock center" with brian williams tonight. and an excerpt from gabby's foot, "my foot is too big for the glass slipper" --
