ahead to protect tourists. people travel all over the world to take part in the boston marathon. one boy from martinez, in the bay area, was injured. the son of the coach is in the hospital with scrap nel wounds. they were cheering on his wife, katherine, who was running the marathon, when both bombs exploded. >> they were at the finish line to congratulate katherine. they were just right there in the center of it. >> katherine hearn posting an update late last night saying aaron is now in the icu and he remains in stable condition. a shrapnel injury to the boy's thy will require additional surgery and the extent of the damage is not clear. one bay area woman kept running into the danger zone. joann roland was just a few hundred yards from the finish

line when the first explosion went off. the concord woman said she didn't realize it was a bomb until the second went off 20 seconds later. she raced to the finish line and her awaiting husband. >> i had 20 seconds. i ran to the finish line. as i was run together finish line, i saw them carrying a woman in a wheelchair that looked like she had lost a leg. >> roland and her husband are preparing to return home to the bay area tonight. she says she is too traumatized to run another marathon any time soon. our own terry mcsweeney touched down at boston logan airport early this morning. he will have live updates all morning long starting at 6:00. we will, of course, continue to follow new developments surrounding the explosion. the "today" show reports live immediately following "today in the bay." that starts at 7:00. the breaking news from the south bay. a little girl has sadly died in a fire in san jose's japan town.

that fire started in a building behind a home on north 5th street between empire and jackson street. firefighters say the small structure was being used as an extra bedroom detached from the main house. two young girls were inside the structure. one of them a 7-year-old. she was killed. the other was taken to the hospital suffering minor burns. it is unclear what started the fire and whether it was legal or not. marla tallez is at the scene gathering the latest information. she will tell us another person was rushed to the hospital after that fire as well. she will have the latest details coming up in a live report at 5:00. we do have new details this morning regarding a separate deadly house fire in another part of san jose a few blocks from o'connor hospital. firefighters say overnight, they found the body of a second person inside the home on daniel way. they don't know if it is male or female. earlier, crews found a dead elderly woman in those flames.

crews say, heavy winds made it very difficult to fight that fire that broke out at about 8:30 last night. 4:36. five people accused of killing a millionaire during a home invasion robbery are expected in court. the three men and two women are set to enter their pleas. they are being tried as a group for the november 30g9 death of ravi kumra. the two women are suspected prostitutes who had been to kumra's home. they believe they gave information to the men that broke into the home. three boys accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl who later killed herself will appear in court. the 16-year-old boys were arrested last week and charged with sexual battery for allegedly assaulting 15-year-old audrie pott at a party last fall. the pott family attorney said audrie ended up killing herself after a photo of the assault was

sent by tex message and e-mail to at least ten students at her high school, saratoga high school. the three teenagers will be in a san jose juvenile court for a custody hearing at 8:30 this morning. quick break. in the meantime, an attorney for the pott family has filed a wrongful death suit against the three boys accused in the sexual assault. that suit also naming the family that owned the home where that assault allegedly took place during a labor day party. the pott family attorney is also accusing the boys of harassing audrie afterwards and they say they had to take steps to try and cover up the evidence. now, let's take a quick break from the day's news and get a look at the forecast for today. cold start to our morning, christina. >> it certainly is. good morning to you. we have a pretty cold start. we still have winds that are strong. there is a windchill factor, 0s, for napa. 44 for concord and 49 in oakland. the wind will continue for today. they are not going to be as

on there and how they remedy that problem. in the meantime, 4:48. so the-called gang of eight will roll out its immigration bill on capitol hill. lawmakers say the bill will be filed today but without fanfare out of respect for the victims and families for the explosions in boston. it will place the 11 million people in the country illegally on a path to citizenship. part of the bill would take steps to secure the border. it would also create a new illegal immigration system that would offer merritt visas to the tens of thousands of high-tech and low skilled workers that u.s. employers want to hire. in the meantime, former congresswoman, gabby giffords, returning to capitol hill receiving a plaque honoring a former aide who died during the shooting in tucson back in 2011. the gunman also killed five others and seriously wounded giffords during a town hall meeting. she has since been in the

gaining to revive the stalled death penalty system. they were ordered to stop order the three drug method of lethal injection. the brown administration appealed that ruling. an appeals court will review the arguments this morning. california has not executed a death row inmate in more than seven years. 4:50. a follow-up on breaking news yesterday. a berkeley firefighter said his pager saved his life. he was responding to a medical emergency when an 88-year-old man started shooting at him. the firefighter's pager kept the bullet from actually hitting him. another follow-up, san jose police looking for the driver of the car that hit an officer a few blocks from the hp pavilion. sunday night, a man was caught breaking into a car by the car's owner. that suspect then jumped into another car, took off, hitting the officer who was directing traffic.

san jose's mercury park news is looking for another place to call home. the building has housed their printers and office space for more than 45 years. they are selling the building to cut back on operating costs. the paper will move into new office space in san jose but the printing operations will move to concord and hayward plants operated by the bay area news group. no timeline has been set for the move. 4:55. a small boat that washed up in northern california two years after the japanese tsunami will soon be headed home. the 20-foot boat was discovered an a beach in comprerescent citt

we heard the first bomb and i thought it was thunder. i turned and saw the first cloud of smoke and then the second bomb came. >> that was the scene yesterday. this is what the finish line looks like this morning. video shot just about an hour ago. the streets of boston closed off as police continue to treat the area as a crime scene. good morning. i'm laura garcia cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. flags all over the country at half-staff including the capitol building in washington, d.c. we can tell you a total of three people are dead including an eight-year-old boy that was there to see his father cross the finish line. >> it all happened because two bombs went off. police are standing guard outside tufts medical center where many of the victims were taken. at least 17 people were critically injured. we understand there was only one trauma surgeon there. they had to bring in ten others. dozens of other people suffered minor injuries. >> it was quite the scene out
