killed, including an eight-year-old. one person injured is a person of interest in this case. there are no suspects. one of the persons injured, a person of interest in this case. there was also an apartment in revere, massachusetts, thoroughly checked out with bomb-sniffing dogs and a large group of police officer. the fbi running this investigation. federal investigators were there as well. joining us now, a couple of people that were involved in that race yesterday. this is royal cortain and his wife, sinty. you were running that race and finished that three minutes before the bombs went off. what's the first thing you heard or saw and then you knew everything was wrong. >> they handed me a bottle of water. the explosion happened. we turned around and went, what was that? at that moment, we didn't know. then, the second one went off and they said, run.

go, keep going down the street. >> reporter: the police were telling you that. >> the organizers. the police weren't around. the organizers knew something was really wrong. they told us to go far down. >> reporter: at that time, you were waiting for your wife and you didn't really know where she was. she crossed the finish line on the other side. i heard the first bomb. everybody kind of looked up. everybody started running away. i ran toward the bombs, because that's where she was. no communication or understanding of anything as far as where people were. i had to zigzag in and out and as you are going through that area, that's when you started seeing the bodies. there were shoes and runners on the course. just kind of laying there. >> you two got back together. everything is okay for you two.

the girls apparently trapped inside a detached building next to a home on north fifth near east empire. that is where "today in the bay's" marla tallez joins us live. we understand you just spoke to the victim's grandmother. >> reporter: yes. we did speak to martha gal vin. she just introduced her 7-year-old granddaughters to us. marla gomez was lost in the flames. the call came in about 11:30 last night. she doesn't live here. she lives in san jose's evergreen neighborhood. here you are look at mariah angel gomez. her 4-year-old sister is in the hospital with burns to her body. her exact condition is not known. the grand moesh tells us the girl's mother and daughter left the girls for a moment in this detached unit behind this main

home. in that detached unit, the girl lived there with her 4-year-old sister and her mother. the mother had just gone into the main home to grab something for a moment. when she returned, the fire had started. the great grandfather rushed in with a fire extinguisher. he managed to get the 4-year-old out but it was too late. >> my dad tried and my son tried but couldn't get her. >> what did they hear? >> my dad said when he went in, he heard her crying. so he was calling for her. he said, mariah, mariah. she was crying. after the fire extinguisher, he didn't hear her no more. >> after clarifying, the great grandparents live in the main home in front of the detached unit where the great granddaughters lived. martha tells us she raised her since she was six years old and took care of her on most

weekends. when it was time to return her, she says, mariah begged her not to come home. the grandmother says she wishes she would not have brought her home. the call came in as i mentioned just before 11:30 last night. i want to give some credit to the firefighters. they knocked out the flames within ten minutes. they are undergoing some debriefing for stress. all about the family that is dealing with this unbearable tragedy. the cause is under investigation. live in san jose, marla tallez. >> so hard to hear. thank you very much, marla. >> that story just tears your heart out. three boys accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old classmate appearing in court for the very first time. they are accused of attacking audrie pott at a house party. she hung herself after pictures of the attack were posted online. her accused attackers in san

jose will soon be in court. good morning, bob. >> reporter: in about 2 1/2 hours, those three 16-year-old boys will have a custody hearing to determine whether or not they must stay detained at a njuvenie detention center. the teens are accused of attacking. the family says they will be here this morning to do whatever they can to make sure the boys are not released. during a news conference, pott's parents and stepmother say they are filing a wrongful death suit. she killed herself, they believe, out of humiliation. eight days prior to her death, three teens allegedly sexually asoughted her, drew and wrote words on her body, took pictures and shared them with classmates via text and e-mail. audrie expressed her horror in

6:14. it was an attack that may have been timed to go off at the moment when most people would be close to the finish line. four hours into the boston marathon after more than 17 people had crossed the finish line, thousands were still running in the marathon. several runners from the bay area were caught in that. christie smith joins us at the airport where people who lived through the trauma will be touching down in a couple of hours from now. >> reporter: the first flight in boston to sfo arrives in a couple of hours this morning. family and friends here in the bay area are already sharing stories of people who are right there at the finish line when the bombs went off including a young boy from martinez who was hit by shrapnel. he was hit in the leg. now, he is in the hospital recovering. he was there with his family,

cleanup. gusty winds at times. keep that in mind. the dumbarton bridge might want to be your alternate if you are traveling over to the bay heading south through the area. northbound 880 toward tennyson, an earlier car fire. not much of a distraction. i don't see the slowing. it is the southbound commute direction on that side of the bay as well as you are heading there. there is a new crash. the car kind of flipped over on its side. we don't hear about any major injuries. a tough drive for the morning commute. stay clear, over to the right, if you can. slowdown not so bad here. building for 84 over toward sunol. no surprises for pleasanton or 680.

capitol hill is responding to the bombings. we start with terry mcsweeney. >> jamie:ing us live in boston from a city that is now forever changed. >> reporter: good morning to you. it is a city that is forever changed. right now, it seems unable to move past that moment when the bombs went off. this is a street where the bombs went off. the runners were coming down. you can see that they are beginning to have a bit of a memorial here. some flowers showing up in this, the past half hour. as you look down boyleston street, it is a street frozen in time just as it was pretty much when the bombs went off yesterday. right now, take a look at an aerial view of the finish line at copley square. several streets shut down in all directions. a total of a mile worth of streets. it is all part of a crime scene. several streets have been shut down since after the race. police officers standing guard.

>> as they were securing the scene in boston, they were bringing out extra officers here, many of whom remain on the capital grounds. patrolling visitors have been told, expect to see increased law enforcement presence as officials try to work out what happened in boston. there was a security shutdown around the white house. the metro, airports, extra police. a heavy presence after these bombings, explosions in boston. what is going on with the investigation? lawmakers are expected to find out today as the fbi, homeland security and others come to brief key lawmakers on the intelligence committee about what happened on that race. president obama got updates overnight while you were sleeping. this morning, he is expected to get more updates telling his aides to keep me posted and make sure the fbi has what they need.

of warming for tomorrow. beach barbecue weather returns at the bay area. 70-degrees inland. i'm watching what's behind mike inouye this morning. you have a traffic alert, huh? >> this is oakland behind me. we just lost our chopper shot. there is an overturned big rig on the peninsula. i hope we can get that chopper shot back. this is southbound 101 at 92. we talked about this overturned big rig. it looks like a chopper shot is out. it is carrying ai load of scrap metal back. it spilled out across the roadway. this is right underneath the 92 interchange. there is a lot of activity and a lot of roadways, four major roads in both directions of 92 and 101, which are able to he soo see all of this activity.

chp doesn't have them beginning to do the cleanup there. this is going to be a while. they just called for an extended eto. extended time of opening. that will be at least a half hour from now, looking at probably another hour or so. a backup that's building, very slow from kiho. 280, also an option for you. you have to get your way back over to 101 farther down the peninsula. southbound, 101 through san mateo. on the east bayside, south 180. 238 through hayward. the crash at winston does sound like things are calming down a bit. we have an overturned vehicle blocking part of the fastball and the center devit. no major injuries. the noncommuter side will be seeing some spectators slowing. watch that. the hayward loop, that configuration changed weeks ago.

it is important to clarify that two and only two explosive devices were found yesterday. other parcels, all other parcels in the area of the blast have been examined but there are no unexploded bombs. there were no unexploded devices found. over 150 people were injured yesterday in the blast. some gravely. our thoughts go out to all of those injured and killed and to their families and friends. i personally want to thank the extraordinary first responders for their extraordinary work yesterday. every single one of them, those on-site and those that got to the site promptly there after, performed beautifully as have the areas hospitals. i've been calling around to the heads of the hospitals personally to thank them as well. it's our hope that tomorrow we will organize an inter-faith

prayer service to help our community heal. we don't have details but we will provide them when we have them. there is a support center that was opened yesterday in what we call the castle opposite the park plaza hotel on arlington and stuart street, i think it is. the mayor has provided staff to help people cope with this extraordinary event. it will be open from 9:00, i think, until 5:00, beyond this evening. finally, everyone should expect continued heightened police presence and everyone should continue personally to be vinlg vigilant. the investigation continues. all of those in law enforcement will be present in force in the area around the blast and throughout the city. with that, let me turn it over

scene. to dispel any rumors, there were rumors floating around that there were seven devices. at one point. that is not true. that happened as a result of some suspect packages that were disru disrupted. we only had two devices and both were those that did the damage and were involved in the explosives incident. at this time, we are looking for the public's cooperation. we are looking for any video or photographic evidence if you can please contact the fbi's hotline or the city's hotline. we would like to review any kind of media that you have out there. we are pursuing those investigative leads at this time. the scene is going to take several days to process. we ask for your patience as we're working in that area and for your cooperation.

thank you. good morning. my name is ed davis. i'm a police xhcommissioner for the city of boston. we are in the process of securing and processing the most xloex crime scene we have dealt with in the history of our department. we are doing that under the direction of the fbi and in partnership with the atf. we have secured the perimeter with members of the national guard. i would like to thank the people working closely with us. we received assistance from chicago, los angeles. units have responded from new york city and baltimore. we are working very closely with all of our partners on this complex investigation. i want to stress that the area around the crime scene, which was yesterday, was 15 blocks, has been reduced to about 12 blocks at this point in time. we will continue to collapse that crime scene as the facts

and circumstances make that available. we want to open up as many streets and get people into the buildings as quickly as we can. we are working diligently on that. please be patient with us in the time we need to process the crime scene. we expect that scene will go for another two days anyway. people should make appropriate plans. i want to stress that any information that you have, any videos or photographs that happen, not just at that scene or anywhere in the immediate vicinity could be helpful. our focus is on processing that evidence right now. we are looking forward to working with our partners to bring the individuals responsible for this heinous crime to justice. good morning. my name is timothy alvin. i'm the superintendent of the massachusetts state police. as i said earlier in one of our briefings, there is really two or he parts to this

investigation. there is the investigative part, which the fbi is taking the lead on. there is also a logistical presence and component of this. i'm speaking to the public. you are going to see an enhanced presence from the boston police, from the state police, from the national guard and from our law enforcement partners,through the metropolitan boston area over the next day and probably longer. that's not for any particular reason other than to provide some comfort to the public, who are using transportation centers or going about their business. so we are engaged with the police. you will see more troopers, nation willing guardsmen there and police like you do every day. that presence will be significantly enhanced. we are doing that for the comfort of the public chblth we

in boston. what occurred yesterday in boston was an act of cowardice. while there will be an opportunity in the future at the conclusion of this investigation to officially define this act. an act of cowardice and of this severity cannot be justified or explained. it can only be answered. to that end, some of the finest investigators at the local, state and federal level have been working through the night to not only conduct interviews and process the scene but to ensure that those interviews are legally sound and that the evidence is recovered with the greatest care. at the same time, police and other law enforcement agencies have been actively working to ensure the safety of our city. at this time, the las that we have suffered is enormous. thanks to the effort of emts, police officers, firefighters,

4 office . deslaurier. some of the things they're saying of key importance right now they know of no additional threats to this area or any other threats at this present time. of cou did not know about the threat that occurred yesterday at ten of 3:00. they say there were two explosive devices. there had been reports as many as five other devices had been found unexploded. they say that is simply not true. we know that at least 150 people have been injured as a result of this bombing. lester holt is joining me as well here in boston, what else caught your attention, lester? >> matt, several officials have made a very specific plea to the public. they are asking for any media, any still pictures, any video that people may have shot right at the scene or very close by that might shed some light on
