11-year-old aaron remains in intensive care after he was hurt in the blast, waiting for his mom to cross the finish line. he is 11 years old and attends marpt martinez junior high school and was very close to one of the blasts when it went off. teachers, classmates are very concerned. aaron's dad, allen hearn describes that day. >> everyone turned to look back down the finish line and a few seconds later the second bomb went off maybe 15 feet from where i was. aaron and our friend's son were much closer than that. >> reporter: friends describe aaron as friendly and fun. they're saying they really are thinking of him every minute. his dad says that he is resting. he opened his eyes and even tried to talk. of course, he knows that he is there with his parents and that is comforting to him, according to his dad.

meantime, a neighbor is starting a photo shoot fund r-raiser tha is planned for saturday here in martinez also to try to help the family. reporting live in martinez, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thanks, christie. at 5:03, local running groups are pulling together in support of the victims. oakland running festival have planned a three-mile run tomorrow night, one mile for each victim. it starts on college avenue at 7:30 and end at snow park. once there, runners will hold a moment of silence to honor the victims of the explosions. >> last night, people on the peninsula held their own run for the victims. more than 50 people showed up for a run for boston at san mateo high school. three pairs of shoes were placed at the track's finish line in honor of the three people killed in the explosion. two boston mayrathon runners frm the bay area stopped by to greet friends. >> me and my brother were supposed to meet at the finish. and for various reasons, we decided to meet somewhere else

at the last minute. and thank goodness. we met up and jumped on the train. about ten minutes after that, the bombs went off. >> people at the mayrathon yesterday, police officers, first responders, everybody in boston was amazing. i think the best thing that we can do is continue to support that marathon. >> several runners say they plan to try to participate in next year's boston marathon as a way of standing up to the attack. >> our coverage of the boston bombings continuing all morning long. we'll bring you the latest developments throughout the entire morning and, of course, updates on our website, nbcbayarea.com. starting at 6:00, our very own terry mcsweeney will be live in boston with details on this ongoing investigation. breaking news now on the peninsula. an overnight fire erupted at a house in san mateo, broke out an hour ago on bermuda drive near

the highway 101 interchange. marla tellez is there with the latest information for us. marla? >> reporter: good morning. the damage looks pretty bad here. the family is so absolutely lucky to be alive. a mother and father and their seven children made it out alive. allen is going to pan in to give you a look at this home. ranch-style home on bermuda drive. still very much an active scene. firefighters say they've put out the flames. they did a great job. the call came in at 3:30 this morning. now they're just checking for hot spots and doing the salvage post-fire work that they do out here. joining me live is chief mike keith. it came in as a car fire? >> right, in front of the residence. folks quickly arrived on scene and recognized that the structure was on fire and increased the alarm to a one-alarm fire and shortly thereafter, increased it to a

second alarm. >> reporter: and the damage, mostly contained, of course, smoke damage throughout the home but mostly contained to what we see and that's the garage and the vehicle in front? >> the part you can't really see is that the fire extended through the attic of the home and it's really throughout the home at this point. our crews were inside. and those types of fires, they have to pull the ceilings down. there's damage throughout the home in knocking down this fire. >> reporter: tell folks how the father got out to work and that's what really saved the family. >> the father got up for work, got outside to take a look because the car alarm was going off and saw the fire and that the garage was on fire as well. he came in, got his family out, his wife and seven kids. great story that they were all able to get out of this house without any injuries. >> reporter: six different agencies made it out here in time? >> correct. all our partners that we work with in the county arrive on scene and our folks did a great

job in knocking this down and containing it to the structure that it was in. there was quite a bit of fire in the home. >> reporter: chief keith, thank you so much for your time this morning. great job. on behalf of you and your firefighters out here. the family, the chief tells me, they have gone on to stay with other family members. they are all safe. again, a mother, father and seven other children made it out of this two-alarm fire in san mateo. the cause started in the car. fire investigators are on the scene to try to determine what exactly sparked the flames. marla tellez, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. >> always a big salute to the firefighters, getting it done. unsung heroes. christina loren is here to talk about a good-looking forecast coming up. >> wind probably played a fire making it more difficult for firefighters. 50 to 60-mile-per-hour gusts from time to time. we'll get a break finally from the wind. we have high pollen levels because of all that wind blowing

around the bay area. picking up that pollen and sustained in our atmosphere. for today, this is what we're talking about. pretty good wind right now. probably the gustiest between now and noon. those winds are set to decrease, especially at the coastline. i can tell you, i'm talking about the gulfs will decrease. gusts had been really, really strong. sustained wind speeds haven't been that bad. driving along the bridge and all of a sudden, boom, uh-uh gyou g. that's what we're going to get a break from. little bit anticipate d at the coast. those winds drop off the next couple of hours. we'll let you know if that becomes a factor for your morning drive. low to mid 70s. high pollen. that's the only wrench in our beautiful day ahead. 70 for livermore, 72 in gilroy, 67 today in san francisco. thinking about that weekend? wait till you see the numbers we have headed your way. that's where you're headed with

mike inouye. >> good morning. looking at fremont here. light traffic flow past the signs, auto mall sign and on the other sign, right side, we have the truck scales. heavy volume of traffic. map marked with the arrow, flow coming into that shot. we have little blips of yellow popping up here and there. this is an issue, car stuck on the road. actually a truck. northbound 680, we do have a stall. this is a different truck. this is in san jose, north 101 at hillyer, a distraction because the truck is over on its side, off the shoulder. all this activity there. minor injuries to the driver. that's the good news. the bad news is quite a distraction with all these flashing lights. may have to block a lane when the big rig tow truck arrives, but no word on when they plan to do that. it shows us from time to time slow here approaching hillyer past silver creek. we do have a smooth drive in the northbound commute routes, south

880 approaching 280. stoppage there. looks like things are starting to smooth out. must have been some equipment. back to you. catching a taxi in san francisco will soon be a little bit easier. transportation agency improving a plan to add a total of 120 taxis to the city this year, 200 more coming in 2014. the agency increasing the number of cabs to try to help compete with companies such as lift and uber. 5:11. san francisco's radiation law could be over before it ever even started. new developments in the case against a man accused of killing three on the vegas strip, including a local inspiring rap artist. silicon valley takes a closer look at the immigration bill. we'll take a look, coming up.

a wednesday morning. spanning shots up in san francisco. that is the bay bridge off in the distance. a little bit of traffic picking up. mike inouye will be here to tell you all about the roads in a matter of minutes. it's 5:13. silicon valley is pouring over that new proposed immigration bill that seems to have everything high-tech wants. scott mcgrew has the details. >> we really need to see it close-up. many of us in california haven't actually seen the bill itself, much less gone through it line by line. top line stuff seems to give silicon valley what it wants, including doubling of h1v visas and company that is use immigrant veezias. increase the number of visas for foreigners who graduate from foreign schools. we educate smart kids but then send them back to places like india and china to compete against us. markets will be considering tep

id reports from intell and yahoo! today. intell says profit fell from 29% as people turn away from computers. yahoo! said advertising declined. yahoo! did make higher profits, but on revenue. that's cost cutting and you can only cut the steaks so thin before your dinner guests figure out what you're doing. mary thompson is live at cnbc headquarters. good morning, mary. >> good morning, scott. in the wake of disappointing repo reports from intell and yahoo! are lower. finished up at 14,756. nad dak added 48 to close to 3,264. gold prices stabilized yesterday but are continuing their decline this morning. of course, this in the wake of this worst two-day drop in 30 years on concerns about global growth. today we'll get a report from the federal reserve about economic conditions around the country. and it's another big day for

with meteorologist christina lo loren. >> good morning to you. get up and get moving on a wednesday morning. wednesdays can be tough. temperatures are a little more mild. in fact, quite a bit more mild in some cities across the bay area. 54 degrees. good morning to you, livermore. temperatures inland are not as chilly. not nearly as chilly as 24 hours ago. look at the difference. 14 degrees more mild in livermore, more than 20 hours ago. the only place running cool er s novato. we don't have any fog to report at this point. looking good there. it is still pretty breezy. winds are sustained between 2 to 11 miles per hour, straight out of the north in most cities. this is a dry wind. still pretty dry out there. this is where we're really improving. it's not as gusty. starting to get more 18 to 20-mile-per-hour wind gusts than the 30, 40 50-mile-per-hour range we were in yesterday. so highs are just perfect for outdoor plans. if the wind has kept you inside, today is your day to get on out there and enjoy 73 in livermore, and 72 degrees right at room

sensors will have to adjust. i'll track that. these sensors are continuing to low down out of antioch. there's some debris around highway 4 westbound and the bypass and throwing through antioch, getting worse just the last couple of seconds. you saw that update. heading over to pittsburg. highway 4 is okay, 680. folks coming off the venutia bridge not having a problem. plechton, dublin. also 84 coming through livermore. had some issues over here at 84 and 680 yesterday, much of the morning. noncommute as that was heading north of the area. so far it's the same this morning for the southbound direction for 680 through sunol into fremont. that disabled big rig around vargas road, mission off-ramp, washington north 1, things are slowing a bit around the bend.

south bay san hojose shows nice steady traffic 101 under that 280 interchange. flow of traffic up past the airport, no concerns. and peninsula palo alto. picking up a few more cars. getting some company now. back to you. >> thank you, mike. >> dignitaries gathering from all around the world in london to pay their respects to the first and only female british prime minister, margaret thatcher. the capital coming to a standstill as lady thatcher's coffin, draped in a union flag, traveled along the procession route to st. paul's cathedral. former british prime minister was girch a ceremonial service with full military honors. that decision, sparking some controversy and protests in that country as some feel thatcher's

leadership divided the nation. security was also stepped up in and around london in the wake of the bombings at the boston marathon. thatcher died last monday, suffer i suffering a stroke. she was 87 years old. it is 5:20. the man kaccused of killing an aspiring rapper from oakland on the las vegas strip is getting ready to appear in court this morni morning. 27-year-old am mmar harris is accused of shooting and killing oakland native kenney cherry. his sports car slammed into a taxi, which burst into flames, killing three people. harris was transferred from los angeles to las vegas yesterday. san jose police say a family fight leads to the city's 13th homicide of the year. a father and his 17-year-old daughter were fighting at a home on baywood square near creek park april 6th. this one got very physical and police say the teen pushed her father to the ground.

he then went into cardiac arrest and ultimately died. the daughter was arrested for involuntary manslaughter. 5:21. san francisco law requiring phone retailers to disclose the possible health risk of cell phones may soon be on its way out. examiner reports there is a proposed settlement that would overturn the cell phone right to no act without costing taxpayers any money. the law was introduced by mayor gavin newsom in 2010 but has been caught up in court ever since, requiring manufacturers to disclose the radiation emited by cell phones. 5:22. coming up, one of my favorite stories of the year. young cancer patient gets his wish when he suited up for the n nebraska cornhuskers, scored the touchdown for the team. how that amazing event will now be immortalized forever. we will explain, next.

welcome back, everyone. 5:24. the flag appears to be at half-staff as well this morning, as people are still remembering the bombing in the boston marathon. it's 5:24. inspiring moments, dream come true. first the moment out on a football field now the trading card to honor the young man's achievement and courage. this memorable video of 7-year-old jack kaufman's 65 yard touchdown run during the spring game last week. it was an epic moment. he is a young kid battling brain cancer. formed a very close bond with the team after he started going to their games. they let him get into the game, suit up and score a touchdown.

clara. >> reporter: his son was hurt in the boston marathon bombings. now his father speaks out about what happened that day. i'm christie smith, with that coming up. and a family of nine escapes a fire inside their home on the peninsula. i'll have all the details, coming up. it's still breezy out there this morning. 5 to 10 miles per hour sustained. showing you those gusts are starting to relax. winds will start to decrease today. we have a major warmup ahead. i'll detail that for you coming up. a transit bus in the middle of the freeway, at least one crash. and that's just in oakland. a look at your commute, coming up. a lot going on as it was last night. hp pavilion, sharks taking on the kings and beating them. a lot of news ahead on this wednesday, april 17th.

this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm jon kelley. good morning, everyone. outpouring of support for the victims of the boston marathon attack continues to pour in from all over the world. total of three people died in monday's blast. more than 170 were hurt. nbc's chris pollone has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: in dorchester, massachusetts, tuesday night -- >> we come together, trusting in your love and your care for martin. >> reporter: prayer and candlelight. a show of support for an 8-year-old boy, martin richard, who died watching his dad run the boston marathon. his mother and sister are still recovering in local hospitals, the boy's death shaking this tight-knit community to its core. >> makes you sick and angry at the same time, you know.

♪ >> reporter: not far away, hundreds gathered on boston commons, trying to make sense of the senseless together. they prayed for healing and honored the memories of the victims. among them, 29-year-old krystal campbell, whose mother spoke tearfully about her in front of their medford home. >> she was always smiling. you couldn't ask for a better daughter. >> reporter: continuing processing the 12-block crime scene, one calling the most complex boston police have ever seen. fbi showing the first pictures of the devices used in monday's attack, pressure cookers packed with gun powder, nails and ball bearings, likely carried in black nylon bags. urging the public to come forward with pictures, videos and tips. >> we're asking anyone who may have heard someone speak about the marathon or the date of april 15g9 in any way that indicated that he or she may target the event to call us.

someone knows who did this. >> reporter: the investigation moving on, as more than 70 recover in local hospitals from physical wounds and a city and nation recover from their emotional scars. and we're learning more about the third victim in this bombing, a student from china. a student at boston university. she was in her 20s. she had gone to the finish line to watch the end of the race with two of her friends. that's the story from boston. chris pollone, nbc news. breaking news continues with a live look at boston medical. >> this is -- >> let's listen in. >> they continue to improve, as does 19 patients still in the hospital. two are considered critical. 10 are serious and 7 are fair. we plan on reoperating on about eight of these patients today and we are looking to discharge one or two of these patients as well today. so, things are moving along as expected and patients are doing

well. >> how many require amputations? >> as of today, seven amputations in five patients. >> how do you tell someone that they're going to lose a limb? >> you have to be honest with patients about that. and it's a very difficult thing for both the patient, especially, and their families and the caregivers. we just be honest. we do it the best we can with this situation. >> you tell them their life is at risk if you don't take these measures? >> that's usually the case, certainly in the beginning. >> can you describe what you saw when this first happened? you have, what, 23 patients that came in? >> right. >> what kind of injuries were you seeing? >> this is the trauma service. i was not here in the initial event. i was out of the state and came back. we saw, you know -- these are injuries that we see but never

quite as -- not this many all at the same time. the injuries are related to the device and the form of trauma from fragments and the blast. >> shrapnel? >> that's what we call fragments, shrapnel. it really is fragments of the bomb itself perhaps and things around where the bomb went off. >> have you been able to identify anything? >> we've taken out large quantities of pieces of things. it's hard to really tell exactly what they are. we sent them to the pathologist and they're available to the police. >> describes some of the shrapnel, 23 or so involved shrapnel directly related to this bomb, the rest was debris. is that the same determination here? >> we're not making any determination about where these fragments come from. some are are metal, some are plastic. some are wood. some are concrete. it's difficult to know.

it doesn't really matter to us. we're just trying to deal with the consequences of those fragments. >> we've been listening to a live update from a physician from the boston medical center where doctors have been talking about the condition of some of the people that were injured in monday's explosions in boston. seven amputations of at least five people. and they're having additional surgeries today of eight more patients having to remove so much shrapnel. >> young bay area victim of monday's boston marathon attack is one of those that will undergo surgery today. 11-year-old aaron hern, standing by the finish line when he was would you knowed by the blast. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live at marpt martin az junior high school. >> reporter: we have heard from his father, who says under the circumstances, he is resting comfortably. he has opened his eyes.

at one point, even tried to speak. so, things are looking good for him. this is, you know -- the 11-year-old, he has hit by shrapnel, just trying to watch his mom cross the finish line at the boston marathon. he is in intensive care at a hospital in boston. is he a student here at martinez junior high school. his dad, a football coach at alhambra high. the news of the injury has friends here heartbroken and worried sick about exactly how he's doing. cls mates started a collection to help the family cover all the expenses. aaron's father, alan hern, spoke with the "today" show. he was with aaron's doctor. >> i realized aaron wasn't with me. i went back to the scene and found him on the sidewalk with a few of the other people injured. i could see he had a wound in his leg and he was scared and obviously in pain. and people came to help us pretty quickly. i'm not sure who they were. someone brought a tourniquet

with a belt to try to help. it wasn't really bleeding heavily, but it didn't look very good, like a war wound. and luckily they got him on an ambulance pretty quickly. >> reporter: as you can imagine, the doctor describes seeing all these wounded children like this as really a tough moment. friends here in martinez say they really want aaron to know that he is missed, he is loved and they are thinking of him. one neighbor is planning a photo shoot fund-raiser for the family here in martinez on saturday. reporting live in martinez, christie smith, "today in the bay." nbc bay area's terry mcsweeney is in boston, getting all the latest details on the investigation. he will have live reports for us all morning long starting in half an hour. at always, we'll continue to follow new developments surrounding the explosion throughout the morning here on "today in the bay" and on our website, nbcbayarea.com. breaking news to tell you about on the peninsula. that is where an overovernight fire fors a family of nine out

of that are house in san mateo. near bermuda drive, highway 101 and 92 exchange. marla tellez is live at the scene. that family extremely lucky just to be alive? >> reporter: yes. i have a smile on my face because, as you say, this family of nine, so lucky to be alive. they really kind of owe it to, first of all, the car alarm but really the father's early work schedule. alan is giving you a look at where the fire started. that suv parked outside this ranch-style home in bermuda. it's completely gutted. at one time it appears to be a chevy tahoe. nonetheless, that vehicle completely gutted because of the flames that quickly spread into the family garage. firefighters got the call about 3:30 this morning, able to knock down the flames quickly, ultimately containing the damage mainly to the family car and the garage. however, the chief on scene tells me that he hasn't had an

opportunity to go inside but expects significant smoke damage throughout this home. the family was able to escape on their very own, which is amazing, considering the couple has seven kids, ranging from 2 to 13 years old. the san mateo fire chief says the father, he woke up early, as he does every day, to go to work, when he heard something he typically doesn't hear when he wakes up. >> great ending for what could have been tragic. fortunately, he was up going to work and heard his car alarm and was able to get these folks out before it quickly spread to the hou house. >> reporter: the family, again, is okay. they have left their neighborhood. they are safely spending the morning with some other family members. again, everyone is okay. the cause is under investigation. it seems to have started in the suv parked outside. it could very well be an electrical fire. fire investigators are on scene and plan to be out here for at least a few more hours as they

determine the extent of the damage and also the exact cause. i do want to mention it was really a group effort on behalf of the firefighters and able to contain the flames. eight engines from six different agencies out here this morning. most of them remain on scene. live from san mateo, marla tellez, "today in the bay." new details on the pg&e transformer vandalism that knocked out phone and internet service to thousands in the south bay. cell service is finally back online for people in the morgan hill and bay area. bob redell is live in san jose. >> reporter: you can see deputies are still posted out here because this pg&e substation off monterey highway is still a crime scene. what the deputy is telling us is that workers are still trying to fix the equipment that was

intentionally sabotaged here and have been working on that since saturday. there have been no power outages. what happened here has put stress on the south bay's power supply. with regard to cell service, sheriff's office has told us that at&t has been able to restore mobile and internet service in morgan hill and gilroy. that means no more of this. mobile network not available messages on your phone, which you can see one user had last night. someone took out the cell, internet and 911 service yesterday morning by cutting fire optic cables along monterey highway and coyote ranch. those were operated by at&t but shared by other providers. 911 service was restored in the afternoon, everything else overnight. you have the separate attack at the substation here where someone broke through the security fence, fired the rifle to damage five transformers, prompting a flex alert, urging pg&e customers to conserve their usage. >> they knew where to go for the

>> welcome back, everyone. good wednesday morning to you. remembering one of the iconic voices of american sports. >> good afternoon. it really s i'm pat summerall along with john madden. >> we all know pat summerall, former nfl player and broadcaster, died yesterday at a hospital near dallas. best known as a play-by-play announcer with john madden for 22 seasons, announced 16 super bowls, more than any other broadcaster. summerall was 82 years old. for the very first time, newtown school massacre, lawmakers on capitol hill, voting on a piece of gun control legislation. the senate is expected to vote on whether to expand background checks at gun shows and at private sales. a growing number of republicans and some moderate democrats are opposed to this idea.

a recent associated press poll finds less than half of all americans actually favor the bill. and that is down nearly 10% since the days following the newtown school massacre in december. the senate will also vote on eight other amendments to democratic gun control bills. 5:46. california's been on gay conversion therapy for minors is up for debate in federal court this morning. ninth circuit court of appeals will hear arguments on whether the law is constitutional. the law prohibits parents from sending their homosexual children to what's called repairative therapy. supporters say it's ineffective and psychologically damaging. others say that they are interrupting parenting and family decisions.

"today in the bay's" marla tellez was the first reporter on the scene. investigators saying this family very much very lucky to be alive. >> reporter: absolutely. they are counting their blessings. since we last spoke to you, jon, we have moved our shot. we are directly in front of this home on bermuda drive. not far from highway 101 and 92 interchange there. we'll give you a direct look. fi

firefighters definitely on scene. they're in salvage and overhaul mode. this is where the fire started, in the family suv that was parked outside in the drive way. that's completely gut ted as is the garage. flames moved up in the attic space. the call came in about 3:40 this morning. i just spoke with the san mateo fire chief out here. he says that the damage is much worse than expected. so, yes, this looks very bad. inside, he says, the damage is very extensive throughout the home because they had to tackle these flames from the inside up, which means they had to tear out the sheet rock to the entire interior of what i'm being told is a three-bedroom home. you mentioned nine people, jon, father, mother and seven children made it out safely on their very own before the firefighters made it here. they got here, were able to escape the flames. san mateo fire chief told me when they got the call at 3:40 and arrived on scene and saw these flames, they were able to knock down the flames quickly, despite the very windy conditions out
