saying someone know who is did this. a broad request of the public, someone looking for ingredients for a bomb, maybe heard someone testing, any know with information, they are asking to come forward, 2000 tips, the president will be here in boston on thursday to speak at a memmorial service, to help this community as it tries to heal. >> bringing in pete williams into the discussion. i want to start with the images, the first one lester showed u. us, the immediate aftermath, from across the street, looking down. you will see a man in black, his clothing has been shredded, running from the scene. are investigators looking at that? this is not the one okay, here is the one we are talking about.

our invest gators looking at him running to or away from terror? >> i would say running away. with a window over the finish line, we saw this man. can you see the impact of the blast partially ripped his clothes away. now, the same thing was said about this exchange student. we are not sure -- it could be the exchange student, they are not sure. if any event, the fbi no longer considers him, they think he was just a victim. >> and the mail box, there is a package, a bag at the foot of that mail box, we zoom in on that one. and the immediately aftermath of the explosion. it looks like it took place almost exactly in that spot. what you are hearing from invest gators from this?

>> they have other pictures that show the same thing. the question is whether the bombs were placed in shopping bags, and the green thing in the picture is in fact a trash thing, set there to be less conspicuous. they believe they were carried to the scene in black nylon duffel bags, because of their weight, up to 20 pounds. >> does the type of device used, we think they were pressure cookers, does it lead investigators in a direction of origin in terms of, was this foreign terrorism or home grown terrorism? >> you can see the brand name of the pressure cook in one of the pictures, unfortunately, no, the recipes for this device have been used for decades, not hard to find them. it doesn't lead them one way or the other.

>> pete, thank you very much. james cavanaugh is a special agent, who worked on a number of cases including the olympic park bombing. good morning to you. what do you think of the photographs? how important or unimportant? >> i think they are very significant. placement of the bomb and design of the bomb give you a picture into this bomber. the overall motive may not be known. the specific goal is known. it is mass murder. the marathon was his stage. by looking at the devices. these are hellish and dibolical, and filled with nails, maybe directional f that is the bomb in front of the curb there, it may be facing back toward the crowd. earlier pictures had a lot of people in the crowd. he is trying to gain mass murder.

he killed three people and wounded 176. he didn't kill -- this is a guy who wanted to kill a hundred people. that is kig cant to the commanders to try to have insight as to who they are dealing with. >> teams of investigators are looking for every fragment of these devices that they can find. they could be looking on the tops of believes, imbedded in the building, without being too graphic, may recover some from the victims themselves. you are confident they can get 98% of this device? >> the a.t.f., and the police bomb squads and the fbi, i would guess they have it together 90 to 95%. pressure cooker, bebes, nails, circuit board.

>> can they get fingerprints off that device? dna off that device? >> we have gotten fingerprints at the a.t.f. forensic lab. dna can be got off of fragments of tape, blasting caps, yes, it can happen. it is not guaranteed. it will be tried first. the fbi lab is great on dna. they will be working that stuff heavy there. is a lot of leads here, publicly, they may be coming out and showing the devices soon. showing the pressure cooker, showing the backpacks, if someone bought two pressure cookers they are likely assem e assembled -- >> reaching out to the public, getting tips, looking at every photo. they were at logan airport, interviews people leaving boston. look the at your cameras, is

there anything that might be on there. >> in a case like this like the d.c. sniper or the eric rudolph case, the public is on your side. you have to leverage that. everybody wants to help. give them information to make them help. >> someone who heard a loud explosion a week or so ago, that could be the bomber testing the bombs. >> in the wake of the tragedy, we are seeing a lot of extra vigilance and security. tornlgs good morning. >> reporter: as you know, pennsylvania avenue n front of the white house is normally open to pedestrians, this morning, it is closed to pedestrians, as the fbi plants for whoever planted those bombs. >> reporter: at the white house,

martinez junior high have started a fund r-raiser to help the family pay for expenses. seven children and their parents safe this morning. fire crews called after 3:30 this morning at the home on bermuda drive not far from the highway 101/92 interchange. officials say somehow the fire started in the family's suv, then quickly spread to the house. finally, at&t now says all cell phone and internet services have been restored in the morgan hill and gilroy areas. crews have been working throughout the night to try to repair a fiber optic cable after someone cut that yesterday morning. a vandal then fired a rifle at a pg&e substation, causing an oil leak in one of his trormers. >> christina lore n is telling all and showing all about a beautiful day. >> it's still pretty breezy but

good morning, everyone, i'm savannah guthrie alongside matt lauer. the group of comfort dogs who have been called in to help in so many tragedies like this, how they are helping the people of the boston area cope and heal. we'll have part two of our exclusive interview with the president. we sat down with him on monday just hours after these events in boston. this morning we'll talk to him about why he says he is confident about immigration reform and the fallout over his controversial remark about his comment about a female attorney general. this morning, we learn more about the victims of the bombings. natalie morales is in boston, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you, savannah. the scope of this tragedy is being felt not just throughout the nation but the world as we learned the third victim killed was a graduate student from boston university in china. she's not been identified. meantime i attended an emotional

candlelight vigil in for chestechesfo dorchester, "no more hurting people, peace" was a message very clear, seen and heard around the world. >> they're in our prayers. >> reporter: at garvey park hundreds gathered to remember 8-year-old martin richard, was with his family near the finish line when the bomb exploded. >> pray we keep them alive in our minds, hearts and memories. >> reporter: his sister jane, lost a leg his mother severely injured and martin was killed. >> i can't talk. >> if someone was having a bad day, he'd put a smile on their face. >> reporter: krystle campbell

was a graduate of umass boston and worked 16-hour days as a restaurant manager. at first their parents were told their daughter survived the explosion but when they were let in, they discovered it was her close friend. their 29-year-old daughter was dead, their grief unimaginable. >> you couldn't ask for a better daughter and i can't believe this has happened. she's such a happy person in everything she did. just doesn't make any sense. >> reporter: 11-year-old aaron hearn is one of ten children injured in the blasts. he came from northern california to cheer on his mother, katherine as she completed her first boston marathon as he waited to take photos of her crossing the finish line. his principal sent the well wishes of an entire school. >> i'd like aaron to know that we miss him and i hope that he is doing well and we're thinking

of him every minute. >> reporter: lives forever changed in an instant. ♪ god bless america, my home sweet home ♪ >> reporter: meanwhile, aaron kearn is currently in the icu. he is expected to be out of the hospital in time for his 12th birthday, which is in just a few weeks and i know the nation is praying for him and all of the other victims as well. >> they are indeed, natalie, thank you. aaron's dad, alan is with us along with dr. david mooney. gentlemen, good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> mr. hearn, i'll start with you. let us know how aaron is doing. >> he was resting comfortably last night. he's been through a lot. he actually a couple times yesterday he opened his eyes, he knew we were there. his mother and i were with him.

he actually tried to talk and we figured out that he was worried about the breathing tube, he wasn't sure what that was about and we told him everything's all right, his lunged looked good and probably going to come out today so that was okay and he relaxed and drifts in and out of sleep like that. there was a few times during the day where he was able to open his eyes and know we were there with him. >> i know this was a family trip to boston, you and your other daughter abigail where there to see your wife katherine as she completed the marathon. can you tell me what you remember? >> she was minutes, actually seconds we find out after the fact from being where we were waiting, and my daughter was maybe another person away from me, we were taking pictures, my son was with a friend of ours, five people farther down the barricade and we heard the first explosion and everyone looked back down the finish line and a few seconds later the second

bomb went off right maybe 15 feet from where i was and aaron and our friend's son were much closer than us and took the brunt of the explosion. initially it was disorienting and i was able to find my daughter and we went to a restaurant a couple doors up and after we kind of got back together a realized that aaron wasn't with me so i went back to the scene and i found him there on the sidewalk with a few other people who were injured and i could see he had a wound in his leg and he was scared and obviously in pain and some people came to help us quickly, auto i'll not sure who they were, someone brought a tourniquet with a belt to try to help it. it wasn't bleeding heavily but didn't look very good, like a war wound and luckily they got him on an ambulance pretty quickly. >> dr. mooney, who treated aaron, among others, into this. you are very experienced but i understand this was unlike anything you've seen before in terms of the injuries coming into your hospital. >> well, we're the trauma center

for children in the city of boston and pretty much eastern massachusetts, southern new hampshire so we do see a lot of pretty badly hurt kids who come in to our hospital. this was different. the fear, not knowing what kids were hurt, the injuries that they had, you know, the things the trauma team are all going through. we drill for this. we drill over and over again and we had assembled a great crew down in the emergency department ready and waiting to receive the kids that we thought we would get. when the kids arrived there was just, it was a tough moment. the kids were all pretty badly hurt and it was again we did our jobs, we flowed them in smoothly, got aaron quickly up to the operating room to address his injury but there were some tough times. >> dr. david mooney you have been through a lot as have you, mr. hern. our best to you your family and

bombing. this morning, law enforcement officials are keeping a very close eye on the internet, specifically sites that show people how to make destructive devices. nbc's senior investigative correspondent lisa myers has that part of the story, good morning. >> matt, good morning to you. regardless of who committed this atrocity it's clear these days that anyone with a grievance and the will can learn how to become a terrorist simply by going online. now authorities are trying to use some of these sites to their advantage. the latest evidence bomb makers have taken their teachings to the web this online al qaeda publication posted last month, a guide to carrying out terror attacks including detailed illustrated recipes for pressure cooker bombs, the kind investigators say was used in boston. >> the internet has brought terrorism to the web. it's made it go viral. anybody can look online and find out how to make a bomb. it is a frightening development.

>> a similar terrorist manual, how to make a bomb in the kitchen of your mom, was posted three years ago. prosecutors say it was used by this former muslim-american soldier who wanted to bomb a restaurant popular with soldiers at ft. hood, texas. anarchists and white supremacists have featured pressure cooker bomb formulas on their websites. >> there are descriptions for how to make this kind of bomb on many websites in every major language and ordinary search engine will take you to them. >> reporter: it's a far cry from the days when terrorist bomb makers used to train others in person in secret camps in remote places. ♪ now everything's online, available any time, anywhere, to anyone, and it's not just bomb recipes. there's all kinds of information a terrorist could use. in fact, the how to guides are so numerous, some counter-terror experts no longer object to the media reporting about them.

>> the bad guys have the information. it's time we let the general public know what's out there so they know what it is they have to worry about and what we're dealing with. >> reporter: u.s. authorities can't block all sites, they now try to use the sites to track down potential terrorists or even thwart them. >> we've been told in the international intelligence community there's been some influence in the recipes and changing them. >> reporter: experts say the easy availability of bomb-making formulas does not seem to have increased the frequency of attacks but worried it may make the successful ones more lethal. >> lisa myers in washington, thank you very much. up next the unsung heroes of the boston bombing share some emotional stories. that's right after this.

we're back at 7:50 with some of the inspiring stories of strangers helping strangers in the moments after the boston marathon bombing. nbc's kerry sanders has that part of the story for us. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning here. we've got the comfort dogs that are dogs here. they know how to get out and reach and give unconditional love to those in the city who need it now, a city that is beginning to celebrate the goodness in people. ♪ >> reporter: boston is united and thankful for their heroes, like the firefighter who says what you see in this photo is a first responder just doing his job. >> she was in pain. she was scared. i'm not sure how old she was but she looked very young to me. she said "i'm scared. ". >> reporter: as i look at this picture i see a burly hero, you, not just rescuing somebody, but

comforting somebody. what do you see? >> i see somebody hurt. people say what'd you do first? who do you get to? who do you had en? it's one patient at a time. >> reporter: for bostonians one kind act at a time. >> one guy was shivering so bad. i looked at him, do you want coffee? he was like oh, yes so i brought him some coffee. >> reporter: he also brought orange juice to strangers on the street and a bostonian who opened her home. >> i'm close if you want a warm place. >> reporter: ally blogged requesting it was one of those moments where you say to yourself people are good." small acts of kindness and big acts of bravery. during my interview with jimmy, bruce mendelssohn who also ran toward the explosions to help walked off. >> thank you, pal. i appreciate it. >> reporter: a firefighter and a civilian who joined forces

monday, bruce works at mit. he used a t-shirt as a tourniquet on the girl that jimmy scooped up. >> reporte that is the girl, hero, she's cowering, there's the victim, the tourniquet. what do you see in that picture? >> i see people trying to help, i see america in that picture. i really do. i -- this is what we do and this is why we will win because we help other people. >> reporter: bruce and jimmy the firefighter say they do not know who that girl is but they would love to meet her. ruthie and maggie and the whole gang here with their handlers will be out on the streets of boston today, working with people who need it and right now they're right here at first lutheran of boston. guys, back to you. >> kerry sanders thank you very much. what a nice story. >> they did provide a lot of comfort. more of our interview with

we're is it studio 1a in new york city. we'll have the latest developments on the investigation into that bombing from lester and natalie in boston in a couple of minutes. also, part two of our exclusive interview with president obama which we taped before the attacks in boston and this morning we talk more about his push for gun legislation, it is facing a critical vote today. does he feel personally responsible for the families of the newtown shooting and his thoughts on hillary clinton future and jay-z and beyonce's trip to cuba. >> wide-ranging. >> indeed. >> and a story of a successful man who decided to invest his time and money in a troubled florida neighborhood. the results, 20 years and $10 million later may amaze you. >> look forward to that. let us start this half hour with more on the tragedy in boston and what we're learning now about the investigation and the victims this morning, as i mentioned, natalie and lester are with us once again. good morning, guys. >> good morning to you, and matt, savannah and al we are

still trying to piece together from investigators details that are coming out. we're getting a clearer sense, lester, of even pictures and photographic evidence of the devices that were used to carry out these attacks. looks like they were mounted in an everyday kitchen appliance, pressure cooker. >> likely inside of a black bag. there was a picture of that pressure cooker so they've identified the basic components. they know there were small nails in there, that there were bebes, that's meant to inflict damage like a claymore mine would do. this is one important piece, tells them the signature that would lead them to whoever made it. >> clearly designed for maximum impact. also investigators are still saying this is a wide open investigation and they're appealing to the public for their help. >> we've heard this appeal for pictures and we've seen some photographs come forward that

raise some interesting questions, whdh our affiliate here in boston has been showing one photo of what appears to be maybe a plastic bag with a paper bag inside. it's at the very location where the second bomb went off, there we zero in on it. >> this is the before picture. >> afterwards you can see the explosion happened in the same place. notice some of that is smeared out. >> smoke. >> because we're trying to conceal some of the more graphic photos there but that's the kind of picture they're looking for that will give them some indication of where this might have been placed and perhaps pictures taken in the moments before that. they're also asking people, did you see someone who had a very heavy black bag, this would have been a very heavy object. do you know someone that was looking up information about how to make bombs so they're really getting people to think about what they've seen and heard not only on that day but in the days before. >> and meanwhile we're also getting more information and learning more about the victims

of this horrific tragedy, including the youngest, 8-year-old martin richard. there was a beautiful and emotional canned 8light vigil in his hometown of dorchester, just outside of boston. many are praying for him. his sister severely injured and his mother a brain injury. krystle campbell, identified as another young victim here and her mother tragically was told her daughter had survived and turns out when her mother went to the hospital she realized it was, in fact, her young friend that had survived and her daughter had died, and then we learned as well the identity of the third person killed was a graduate student from china. we don't know her name. it has not been released yet but we do know she's a graduate student studying at boston university and countless others in the hospital as well, dealing with their injuries and still so

much healing that needs to happen here. matt, savannah and al we send it back to you. >> natalie and lester, we thank you for the update and the extra information. we're going to get a check of the morning's other top stories. tamron hall, good morning, again. >> good morning, everyone. we begin with breaking news the bipartisan measure to expand background checks for gun buyers does not have enough votes to pass atoday according to one of his cosponsors. kelly o'donnell joins us with the latest details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tamron. senator joe manchin says "we will not have the votes today." that's despite his efforts trying to bring over a few red state democrats who can't make the vote and some moderate republicans he had hoped to attract. he will keep working until today's scheduled 4:00 p.m. vote but sources in both parties say they are a handful of votes short to expand background checks to gun shows and on the

internet, manchin hopes even if it fails today there will be renewed pressure, maybe some new strategy to make the attempt again. he says it is not over. even if today's vote false short. >> kelly, thank you. american airlines says flight operations should be nearly normal today after a computer glitch tuesday stranded tens of thousands of travelers. american and its sister airline american eagle grounded flights nationwide because of what the airline called a technical outage with its reservation and booking tool. an independent task force on post 9/11 interrogation techniques issued a scathing report tuesday. it concluded that the highest u.s. officials under the bush administration bore responsibility for what it called the indisputable use of torture. the report also urged president obama to close the guantanamo detention camp which has been widely condemned by human rights groups. it's been nearly four years

whether you're just starting your 401(k) or you are ready for retirement, we'll help you get there. we are back at 8:14. bombing attacks like the one in boston can be some of the most difficult crimes to solve because much of the evidence can be badly damaged or even destroyed. nbc's mara schiavocampo has more on the task facing investigators. good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. here we have a pressure cooker similar to the one used in boston's bomb. it's more than twice the size of the one that was used but even when it's destroyed in a bomb it leaves behind tiny pieces that can be put together and no detail is too small. investigators want to learn as much as possible about the bomb to lead them to the bomber. after an explosion, the investigation. the bureau of alcohol, tobacco,

firearms and explosives trains hundreds of law enforcement and military officials on how to sift through what's left after a blast. csi for bombs. the program uses real explosives. >> fire in the hole! >> reporter: and teaches participants how to piece together evidence from the resulting fragments. >> take a close look at everything. >> reporter: this particular five-day course focused on a car bomb but the principle is the same no matter what kind of explosion. >> picking up that evidence, putting it all together, going back and investigating it and finding out who did it. >> reporter: the key, paying attention to every little detail, working with fragments that are often smaller than a fingernail. here, investigators photograph tiny pieces of evidence and collect them in trays, parts of wires, batteries, springs and metal, all providing valuable information about what kind of bomb was used. >> we've got a good amount. >> reporter: and where it was

placed. >> it looks like it was over here. >> reporter: small clues providing a much bigger picture. and something as small as a fragment of a knob or a valve or a handle can provide the clues that lead to breaks in these investigations. now the investigations not only help officials catch bombers after the fact, they also provide them with a lot of information that can be used in creating security protocols and preventing future attacks. >> law enforcement officials are asking anyone not only in the boston area but across the country who may have sold something like this, this is bigger than the one they suspect was involved in the bombings to contact them, could have been purchased online, i'm sure they're dealing with the companies that sell them on the internet. >> and hopefully will lead them to the person who committed this terrible crime. >> mara schiavocampo thank you. now to more with our exclusive interview with president obama, with he sat down with him just hours after the tragic events in boston. in part one we discussed the

push for new gun legislation, tensions with north korea and the fight over the budget. this morning part two as you i ask the president about the other headlines of the day and the relationship with the newtown families. they've been a key part of the new gun legislation. the bill may not have the support when the senate holds its first vote this afternoon. these families are in the midst of their grief. it's right now. do you feel personally responsible to them, having started this journey with them? >> well, i feel personally responsible the same way i hope every parent out there feels responsible, for all our kids. the key thing for me is every once in a while, we are confronted with an issue that should transcend politics, and now is the time for us to take some measure of action that's going to prevent some of these tragedies from happening again. >> on immigration, do you think this is a once in a generation

moment where reform can actually get done? how confident are you that you'll get a bill by the end of the summer? >> you know what? i'm reasonably confident on this one. i think that you've seen great work on a bipartisan basis between democratic and republican senators. so if you take that package together, one that's supported by labor, that's supported by business, that's supported by advocacy groups, that's supported by evangelical christian groups, you know, this is about as broad-based a coalition as you're going to get. >> has marco rubio shown political courage? >> i think he has been a very positive force as have all the senators who have been involved and my hope is not only we end up with an immigration bill that shows we're a nation of laws and a nation of citizens that helps our economic growth, that helps us attract incredible talent to our shores, but i also hope that it kind of restarts muscle

memory in congress for getting bipartisan legislation done. >> dinner diplomacy. how is your charm offensive going with republicans? >> i don't know about my charms but they've been useful conversations. i think that everybody involved in them has felt like they created some space to talk about areas of agreement and disagreement. i've always maintained that people are not as polarized, even in this town, as it's portrayed in the media. the political engines of the party and blogs, et cetera, force people into taking more extreme positions publicly than they actually believe privately. i'm willing to try everything. as i said i'm willing to wash folks cars and walk their dogs if i can get some legislation passed. >> have you been watching the philadelphia abortion doctor trial accused of gruesome crimes. are you following and do you think it animates a larger debate about abortion in this

country? >> well, i'm familiar with it. i can't comment on it because it's an active trial. what i can say is this. i think president clinton said it pretty well when he said abortion should be safe, legal and rare. if an individual carrying out an abortion, operating a clinic or doing anything else is violating medical ethics, violating the law, then they should be prosecuted. >> carmela harris, you had to apologize for listing among her many qualifications that she was the best looking attorney general in america. why did you apologize? did you really think you did something wrong or was it blown out of proportion? >> well, look, you know, pamela is a friend of mine. we had been joking off stage, you know, when i got to the stage, i made the same joke and obviously some people i think reacted negatively.

kamala knew where i was coming from but it was a useful teaching moment for me and for the country. as the father of two daughters i want to make sure they're judged on the merits and not on their appearance and so i've got no problem in people i think using what was intended as an innocuous comment to make this larger point that we want to make sure that women are judged based on the job they do and not how they look. >> let me ask you about jay-z and beyonce's trip to cuba. were you aware of it ahead of time and have you seen his open letter which raps about getting white house clearance? >> i wasn't familiar that they were taking the trip. my understanding is i think they went through a group that organizes these educational trips down to cuba. this is not something the white house was involved with. we've got better things to do. >> last thing, i know you're not endorsing but do you personally hope that hillary clinton runs

in 2016? >> you know, i think we're very far away from that, but i have said before and i'll say again i think she was an extraordinary secretary of state and she became not only a great partner for me in foreign policy but a good friend. >> do you miss her around here? >> i do. she's earned her rest and i know that whatever she does, she's going to be able to continue to be a leader and incredibly positive force for the causes i care about and that she cares about, all around the world. >> the president not able to endorse the vice president. >> who is walking down the hall as you talk to him. let's go to a florida neighborhood that has seen a remarkable turnaround thanks in part to the efforts of one generous man. here's nbc's gabe gutierrez. >> reporter: in the theme park capital of the world, hospitality means big business.

>> thank you so much. appreciate it. >> reporter: but to harris rosen, it means much more. >> thank you. >> hospitality really is appreciating a fellow human being. >> reporter: he grew up in the slums of new york, a family of immigrants. now he runs seven hotels in orlando, his self-made success would be remarkable on its own but that's not what he's most proud of. >> came to the realization that i really had to now say thank you. >> reporter: away from the theme parks there's a neighborhood in orlando called tangelo park and 20 years ago it was in need of some hospitality. >> drug infested, people afraid to walk out, walk through the neighborhood. i was ready to move out. >> reporter: but georgia gordon didn't move out, because harris rosen first decided to pay for day care for parents in tangelo park, a community of about 3,000 people. when the kids were older he

offered free tuition to state colleges. gordon's daughter took advantage. >> it's one thing to offer a scholarship to one person one time but to continuously for over 20 years to continue to provide this type of incentive for people to go to school i think is absolutely wonderful. >> reporter: the incentive has paid off. university of central florida study says the crime rate here has been cut in half. some property values have quadrupled and the high school graduation rate is now approaching 100%. before it was just 25%. scholarship recipient camilla crawford is a freshman at the university of central florida. she wants to be a lawyer and -- >> make sure i show the world that with his gift that i was able to reach my maximum potential. >> reporter: big dreams thanks to harris rosen's big project, almost $10 million over two decades. >> we've given these kids hope

easiest part of the job. sorry it's messy. isn't gardening about getting a little dirty? >> a little messy. here is lavender and this is a beautiful summer savory and then mint of course because mint tea or peppermint tea would be tasty, and all these herbs you can buy at the local garden center >> how about herbs in terms of their sunlight necessity, they need a lot, right? >> full sun. if you have a sunny terrace or the spot on your back stairs. >> did you say how much water? >> lemon balm. smells so good. and then you fell in around each of these herbs. >> can i ask you, when it's time to actually use some of the herbs, do you cut from the top or bottom? mine gets leggy. >> the more you snip the more they grow. that's tea. here is our salsa garden. >> i love this idea. >> this is so much fun because i love salsa in summertime with a

spoon of it over fish or on a taco, and so you're going to do a sweet pepper, a jalapeno pepper, you want chives, tomato plant. this is a cherry tomato plant. >> particular kind of soil? >> this is potting soil you can boy, there's very good potting soils in the garden centers right now that have time release fertilizer in them so this is a good thing. put the big thing in the middle, and then you have cilantro, essential in a salsa and again try to get the whole root ball out. don't yank because you might break the plant. this needs good sun, probably eight hours of sun. >> how often do you water this? >> when it gets dry. put your finger in the oil and probably every other day. >> okay. >> you'll get a very nice garden and again this has to be all filled in and you can keep doing

that. >> i will. i just didn't want to get you dirty. give me a wide berth here, martha. >> savannah when you go to martha's house she tries to get you to get green juice. >> it was good? >> i never had it, remember i left beforehand. >> here is our green -- there's a big article in the paper today about green juice and what goes in green juice is your preference, if you don't mind strong, you could add kale. here's some kale and collards. i like it with parsley and celery and here's another very nicer er iterra cotta pot. >> this is incredibly healthy. however when you're making a juice isn't it nice to put something sweet in there? >> i like to put a pear. apples are a little bit, they're sort of empty calories. >> how about beets? >> if you like beets it gets color to the juice.

♪ welcome to "today" on this wednesday morning. it is april 17th, 2013, a nice crowd outside on a pretty good day here in new york city, i'm willie geist along with al roker and tamron hall. natalie is in boston a couple of

days after the blast that ripped will you that city. natalie a lot to talk about with you. you spent the night at an emotional vigil in dorchester, mass. but first the investigation, where are we this morning? >> i think we're starting to learn a lot more about the investigation and where it's going from here. investigators did say they were no closer to identifying a suspect. they say their investigation is wide open at this point. they're appealing to the public for more photographic evidence or video evidence that the public may have and even saying somebody has to know something or perhaps they saw somebody testing some explosive or heard some sort of testing explosive devices. if you've heard then please call the fbi's tip line. what we are starting to get is photographic evidence of the device or devices that were actually apparently used and they're described as being crude devices, but obviously ones that would have maximum impact,

loaded for bear with bb pellets and other metal pieces including screws that would have the kind of impact as you're seeing a lot of injuries to the lower extremeities and trauma for a lot of people. also packed in a pressure cooker which is an everyday kitchen appliance and that is a technique that has been used in the past in afghanistan, nepal, india, even in 2010 in that failed times square attempted bombing, the bomber, the person who attempted the bombing there loaded it in a pressure cooker as well, so all of those things investigators are saying is going to bring them closer to perhaps being able to put all of that forensic evidence together so they can then bring that closer to perhaps a suspect or suspects in this case, but we are talking a lot today about the victims and as you mentioned, willie, al, tamron, i spent the night last night at a

vigil for the family of 8-year-old martin richard, and i think just seeing that picture yesterday, that went viral of him, holding up the sign that said, "no more hurting people. peace." that picture is really a symbol that was, you know, i think felt an emblel around the world of what this has done to this community, and communities around the world, as we're learning as well that one of the victims was a chinese graduate student who was studying here at boston university, and another 29-year-old girl, krystle campbell, was the other victim who was identified yesterday and her family also grieving. so a community very much hit hard here still and it's going to be a long time for healing. >> natalie, how did, you know, you're a journalist and also a mom. how did you hold it together during the day yesterday covering it? because i don't know that i could have done it. >> yes. no, you know, i started talking

to some of martin richard's classmates, all 7, 8-year-olds themselves and i think when you ask them questions about their friend, it really started to hit them and they started to cry, and it was like me talking to my own kids. i mean, what do you ask them, how do you reassure them and comfort them and the only thing i could do is put my arms around them and give them a hug and let them know that this doesn't happen often. it wasn't meant to happen, and you just reassure them as best you can, but i have to tell you, i was crying, everybody around me was crying because it's very hard to hold it together when you're talking to the young kids about their friend and i even talked to his soccer coach for both martin and his sister, jane, who is still in the hospital, lost her leg, and the soccer coach was like, he broke down, he was so emotional he couldn't talk. he's like, they're just kids. they're just kids.

how does this happen? and i think that's what everybody has been saying and talking about here. >> you think about the impact on just that one family. there are a lot of stories but you lose young martin, his little sister loses a leg, a head injury for their mother. their older brother and the father spared because the older brother was behind the tree. >> you wonder why not us, survivors. it's hard. >> the father alone but krystle campbell, her grandmother recently gave an interview and she was talking about how krystle gave up her single life, this young woman, to care for her grandmother. having her there made her feel safe. you have the other story you've talked about as well, two brothers, both losing parts of their leg and one calling, we're all someone's kid and these guys are in their 20s and 30s and one calls his mom and said mom, i'm hurt bad. that's someone's kid but going back to martin richard, you were talking with natalie, i'm not a

mom but i'm an aunt and i have a 7-year-old, a 3-year-old, 14-year-old and a 16-year-old, nieces and nephews and seeing that little bright-eyed, toothy smile, you know, you talk about being a journalist and losing it. you're not a journalist when you see something like that. if your heart is not crushed you're not human. that's someone's baby and he's not going to come home. he's not going to go to high school, not going to go to prom, all of those milestones and his dad has to live with that pain. it's awful. >> we've seen too much of it over the last four months, 20 first graders in connecticut and now a third grader in boston. natalie we'll check back in with you later in the show. one of the other things we want to point out there's been a lot of horrible news but i think it's worth stepping back and looking at the job these hospitals did. >> amazing. >> these trauma units, there were i guess six or seven within about a mile and a half radius, great world class hospitals of where this happened. i was talking to michael leiter,

former head of the counterterrorism unit here in the united states and he said in 2011 they ran a drill looking at something like a mumbai style attack, someone started shooting civilians, they ran a drill in the city of boston so they were prepared in an odd way. you didn't hear story of chaos. the triage went well, the right people went to the right hospitals. this was top level care and you think how much worse it could have been. >> you also realize how much this is a calling for those people who do that for a living. we talk about careers when you're a kid, what do i want to be when i grow up and these doctors, these nurses, these emts, that is a calling. >> the story, a lot of these people are trained but the people the average people who ran toward the explosion, after the explosion. >> the marathon runners who finished and went to donate blood right after, literally

running straight to hospitals to help out. it's incredible. >> this is something that the terrorists want to tear us apart. i think it unites us. >> no question. >> it has in the past and always when we suffer this way we see how much we care about each other no matter race, where you're from, texas, boston, new york, doesn't matter, you see that we have each other's back. it's sad it comes to this moment that we realize that. >> we did learn that at a press conference earlier from the boston medical center. we talked about 8-year-old martin. there is a 5-year-old also in critical condition so let's hope, let's hope for that. our final take was a really cool moment that happened last night, yankee stadium if you know anything about baseball or rivalries or sports you're not going to see this very often but in this moment at yankee stadium a moment of silence before the game and yankee fans singing along with "sweet caroline" played at every red sox game at fenway. ♪ i've been inclined ♪ bah, bah, bah

♪ as we've seen since the bombings on monday and you're seeing right there, there are some amazing heroic inspirational stories of bostonians stepping into what effectively was a war zone to help strangers. nbc's kerry sanders has more on the outpouring of love and support in boston.

kerr rirks -- kerry, good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning, and here are the comfort dogs that have arrived to help. they're sort of unconditional love for the folks in boston, sort of furry therapists who will be out on the streets here today. this is luther, isaiah has been working with some of the children in newtown, so they are very effective and their plan today is to get out and see if they can touch people's hearts, this in a city that is beginning to find the goodness in people and celebrate. ♪ boston is united and thankful for their heroes, like the firefighter who says what you see in this photo is a first responder just doing his job. >> she was in pain. she was scared. she's -- i'm not sure how old she was, but she looked young to me and she said, i'm scared. >> reporter: i see a burly hero, you, not just rescuing somebody,

people. first is what you're eating. onion, garlic, scallions, these things keep recycling in your mouth and that's a big problem. avoid them all together. another thing is dry mouth. your mouth gets drier, drink water, keep flushing out the bacteria and also parsley is nature's normal breath freshener. it's not just on the plate for nothing. then head to the drugstore because something that you can do to prevent dry mouth, sugarless gum or mints and look at your oral hygiene. if you haven't changed your toothbrush in a year, every six months you need to do this. >> i do it every month. >> even better. but these are the things, i don't know if you've seen this tongue scraper, your tongue is a big contributor to bad breath so when brushing your teeth use that tongue scraper. >> things still persist, what do you do? >> then go to your doctor. it could be an index of digestive problems or diabetes or something that you see your dentist for, for gum disease.

>> next problem something i'm passed worried about, thinning hair. >> not your problem but a problem for millions and millions of people. we're not talking about male pattern baldness but your hair gradually thins. one the biggest problems is not enough protein. you need about half your body weight so you have to load up on protein and also on orange vegetables and fruits that have a lot of vitamin a. you need lean protein, it can come from dairy and eggs and that can promote it. >> what you find at the drugstore? >> heading to the drugstore you can't be eating all day you can use supplements, protein supplements or vitamins and minerals that don't replace, they supplement food, but all kinds of temporary products that can thicken your hair shaft, make them look thicker and there's something that maybe you knew about, monoxydil monoxydilmonoxydil, rogaine, they're temporary. use a loose head band because

washington. we're seeing a lot of conflicting reports about a suspect, a person of interest and an arrest perhaps being imminent. >> reporter: what we know for a fact is we're told by several federal officials that no arrest has been made. there's a great deal of interest in a couple people they have identified. one in particular based on their review of all these pictures they have asked for. what they are concentrating on is people who appear to be carrying heavy black nylon backpacks and setting them down in the area the bombs went off. they have some matches like that and they are trying to figure out whether that is the real deal or the koicoincidence or a witness or what. it's rather confusing at this point. partly because of the one person's item of interest is another person's suspect. but what we have been told is no arrest has been made. we have heard frankly conflicting reports from seen r your federal officials about whether they have in fact even

identified anybody yet based on looking at these pictures. some say yes, some say no. i would take a step back and say whatever is going on, it is a promising development. they would hope pictures would give them the leg up they needed to move the investigation along. it's going to take awhile to figure out who could have bought all these pieces in the bomb that are relatively intact in from the explosion. it's rapidly moving. i think it's fair to say we don't precisely know what's happening right now. but i believe this is very promising that less than two days since the bomb attack, they have some hot leads. >> let's talk about the science briefly. the fact the average iphone, the number of pixels that can be blown up to do basic facial recognition. the fact that there was a report today that a stationary camera

outside a department store has been critical to law enforcement. the fact that most city streets, especially boston, especially new york, have multiple views of public walkways. so that combined with the fact that science allows us to now record and memorize faces electronically, new york city has cameras that even know if an individual and a package they are carrying becomes separated over time. that this, as you indicate, we kind of knew that this would be crucial in this investigation. >> reporter: especially since they are not merely looking for a face in the crowd, if you will. they are looking for somebody doing a specific thing. they believe, brian, that these bombs weighed about 20 pounds a piece based on their initial analysis of what was in them. and the fact is that they are looking to find someone who was doing a specific thing.

carrying a heavy bag and then setting it down and walking away. so those are the heavy criteria they are looking for and they have found some things that match that. now they are trying to figure out who is this person and trying to find them, trying to identify them, and that we know for sure is going on. beyond that whether they have actually, a, identified a person so they know who it is and where they are, and b, whether they have made arrest, we think no arrest here. we are not even sure they i.d.ed it. we heard conflicting information on whether they have identified the person, whether they know who it is rather than just a face. one other thing, we have been showing this picture from our affiliate in boston that shows during the race you can see what looks like a trash can. there it is. they say that thing that looks like a mailbox or a letter drop box is a trash can. you see this bag sitting down next to it. we have now been told that that

is the point. it's been obscured in this picture. that's the picture being blurred afterwards to conceal the injuries. but we have been told by officials that that's the point where the bomb went off. while they can't say for sure it was in that bag because they haven't found pieces to identify, we have been told by several officials that's where one of the bombs went off in front of that restaurant. that's one of the bomb locations. >> it appeared, and to my laymen's eye, to be one of the trash containers that maybe paper lined with a see-through plastic outer layer that had been put there. the kind that you would see, i don't know, at outdoor events and are portable and can be picked up after they were filled with trash. >> right. i've just been told by a federal official while we've been

talking that the fbi is looking for someone. they have a face, but they don't know who he is. that was near where the bombs were set off and might have information. that's federal official speak for somebody who was sufficiently close that they could have done it, i guess is what they are say iing here. might have information is a polite way of saying it it it. that seems to be the state of play as we understand it. no one has been, quote, unquote, identified. they don't know who it is. they are trying to find that person. but to say an arrest has been made seems to be at this point to be wrong. >> let's check in with lester holt. he is up in boston where we were yesterday. lester, all day long we have had this slow drip through media sources of photos. a zipper found on the road, a battery with leaves.

yesterday we learned about the pieces instantly recognizable if you know anything about pressure cookers, the water mark on the base. the place where the elements come into all pressure cookers. that's been the other part of piecing this together. >> reporter: brian, you have to give it it to authorities. they got on this right away to put out that plea for pictures. they were at the airport as the runners, many of them were leaving for their various homes, asking, do you have any video or pictures and taking a look at what people recorded. people have gotten into the spirit of this. they want to help. you watch local tv and it's been a parade of photos people are contributing that may or may not point out something of significance. since you were here, they have reduced the area of the neighborhood that is blocked off. it's a very concentrated area basically between the two points of detonation. there's a fair amount of

activity. perhaps not as much on the street as we saw in previous days. the tempo of things, it's hard to gauge. you can hear sirens in the background. as it whisked past us. it was hard to gauge whether there was uptick in tempo here near the blast scene itself. there continues to be a heavy police presence. i took a walk around the area awhile ago. every time you turn, there was another police officer on the street. you hear another vehicle whizzing past us. that's been the tempo for the last two days. we continue to watch from this vantage point, brian. >> lester holt, who along with us last night while we were on the air, we had the boston p.d. special operations division go by behind us. michael leiter,'v
