has lost now his son, his 6-year-old daughter lost a leg, and his wife is still in critical condition. >> it's going to be a difficult road. >> and i guess there's one other daughter who is okay, thank god. the second victim has now been named. >> 29-year-old krystle campbell of medford, massachusetts. another one of those heart-wrenching stories that her dad was told -- >> don't we all have a friend that looks just like her? >> yeah. her dad was told that she was okay and it turned out that it was a case of mistaken identity, that her friend was actually okay and she had passed away. >> she was just there to watch her friend's boyfriend come over the finish line. >> the third was a chinese national, a grad student and her name is not being released at this point. i actually heard someone on the news talking about how they were down there at the area this morning, or late last night -- >> are they letting people in now? >> they're making a smaller crime scene.

a guy who had a clarinet in a case. he was walking across the street and there were a lot of people just gathering and walking and standing there. they said he opened up that clarinet, he played "the star-spangled banner" pitch-perfect, and everyone stopped and applauded. >> that would have devastated me. >> it was like a moment. and it just talked about how people come together. >> we have different ways of grieving and grieving is such an essential part of life. you have to grieve or you can't move on. the trouble is that when people choose to continue grieving long after it's healthy to keep doing so. i think we're very much in the grief mode. it's interesting how soon life gets back to normal. we were talking about when we lost our beloved dads, how bizarre it is for you to be immersed in your grief and all of a sudden you look around and people are going about their normal days. we're like, how can you do that? don't you realize what just

happened? we're self-absorbed creatures by nature. it doesn't mean we're bad, it's just that we're all about us. and if it didn't affect you personally, then we just seem to move on to how much weight has kim kardashian gained? which is sad, i think. even "people" magazine, i'm kind of surprised today -- this is still such a brand-new tragedy, and it's a crime, let's not forget that -- here's trisha yearwood whom we love, and that's the main story, how much weight she's lost in a short amount of time. on the side, the story -- i'm just surprised by that. >> "people" usually does the, you know, the big news story on the front. i'm not sure what went on in the discussion, but i think it is one of those things that it is everywhere. i was watching different news

places last night and then you flip on "access hollywood" and "extra," and it's wall-to-wall "access" and "extra," and it's all about the marathon, celebs reacting, who was down there, like it's all about it. so there isn't really a way not to see it or not to be exposed. i wonder if "people" thought about, it's in so many places we're going to cover it and we'll do it our way kind of thing. >> they made their own decisions, but we have the right to respond as human beings and citizens. i thought it was interesting to talk about the people who commute here to new york. after the 9/11 attacks, that's all any of us spoke about for months, right? months. even on a 6:00 train yesterday, it wasn't the subject of conversation on a new york train, nor was it this morning coming in, in light of the images we have seen.

maybe people just have become -- >> i think this one really hit people. i'm not sure why people weren't talking about it, but to me because it happened in such an iconic place, such a public place where anyone could have walked by, i think it affected a lot of people. >> that surprised me. >> here's a good quote. mister rogers always comes to the rescue. >> he was always so honest about everything. >> a great quote that went viral. here's the quote. it says, "when i was a boy and i would see scary things in the news, my mother would look to me and say, look for the helpers. you will always find people who are helping." i love that. >> it moves me so much, because he was a friend of mine and a neighbor of mine in nantucket. one of the sweetest men. he would sit like that. he was so real. you realized how did mister rogers become mister rogers? it was because of his mom. you know, that's a window into

>> and they know how to take advantage of the situation, too, with one parent against the other, don't they? >> yes, and that splitting behavior, that doesn't really work. at the end of the day, you're not teaching them responsibility, you're teaching them entitlement. >> that's the question, isn't it? do we reward them for what is expected or reward them for going beyond what is expected? >> i expected my kids to do their homework, brush their teeth. that kind of stuff. when is a reward the right thing? >> when it's a celebration. it isn't to incentivize you or bribe you, but to celebrate what you're doing. you got the big report card and then the big celebration. we're going to do a special movie or family night, because you worked so hard. >> what's wrong with giving the child $5 per "a." >> i don't agree with that. to a certainly degree, it's like -- it's what they're supposed to. it's what's expected of them.

but money is not the only form of commerce. there are other ways to incentivize. they can have sleepovers, earn credit, hang out with the friends, lots of things the kids want, saying let's celebrate you doing a great job without giving you money? >> i think praise is the best thing. who doesn't want to be told like you worked hard, it's smart, it makes them grow up with a sense of character and confidence way better than an ipad will. >> kids sound like stickers, so you give them a sticker and they feel like they have gotten a prize. >> like the happy face, or my tutti-frutti's that i got? nothing wrong there. >> how about the fact we've become a nation that wants to

treat everybody exactly the same? >> i don't like that. first of all, we're all different. we need to celebrate our uniqueness. if you tell someone you're a winner, they may not work as hard. >> i think you have to focus on the individuality of each child. you shouldn't compare to the other sibling. when you're saying that, suzy did better than you, that won't work well for your child. >> absolutely graciously, too. and thanks, ladies, a lot of wisdom right here. fresh from the sea, classic dishes from maine.

shorty rossi is nothing short of a hero. >> we have seven pit bulls. see, look at this. jeff: on animal planet's "pit boss" shorty goes to extremes. >> do you want to do this? jeff: to save these little ones. >> i also want people to understand my passion for pit bulls. i love these dogs. i know. don't even say that. i know, i know. jeff: much like the pit bulls he rescues, shorty had a difficult life growing up. he went to prison for a gang shooting. >> i made mistakes when i was younger and wound up spending years in jail. when i got out, only one thing for me was my pit bulls. jeff: now, shorty and his rescue team return the favor by saving as many abused and neglected pit bulls as possible. >> when i walked into that back yard i knew we had to help these dogs. jeff: welcome, shorty and his pal hercules.
