i'm meteorologist, christina loren, live in san jose at the heritage rose garden for green week. we'll tell you what's new in your forecast and how you can come out here and help beautify the bay area. that's all coming up. i'm looking at a beautiful drive right now in the peninsula. we'll talk about those bay crossings on the bridges. what's up for them coming up we'll take you outside and talk about a live look over the bay bridge. roc roxanne may not have to put on that red right but we'll do it for you. april 25th. "today in the bay." >> it is straight up 5:00. good morning. i'm very happy to have you with us. i'm jon kelly. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. two bay area daycare owners, who are sisters are in jail this morning. they face charges that could cost them their job. christie smith live with what

got them into trouble. >> reporter: one police officer we spoke with said the best way he would describe it is it is kind of like a boa constrictor wrapping around the chest so tightly it traps an infant's ability to breath naturally. they call it excessive swaddling. those two sisters, nazila and l lida sharaf were arrested and charged with neglect. it was formerly known as sunnyside infant and preschool center in livermore. police believe the sisters severely swaddled 7 out of 19 infants in their care. they started investigating after an employee quit over the alleged child abuse. the babies involved are between 7 and 11 months old tleechlt of the babies have upper respiratory infections. >> a child would need to be swad

swadeled in the parents care and only to comfort them as they fall asleep, not a wrap them up and leave them there. >> reporter: this isn't the first time. the state revoked their license in 2010 for swalding and the younger sidst younger sister reopened the facility under her parents' name say mother recovering from the hospital after a speeding car slams right into her san jose home. bob redell is live at the home near leigh avenue. what's the latest on her condition this morning? >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. we just spoke with her husband off camera who was here early morning picking up some personal belongings at his home. he tells us his wife is in intensive care but that he does expect her to recover from her injuries. it does not appear her injuries are life threatening. she was severely hurt when a silver bmw with three teenagers

inside crashed into her home. the impact was so great and the car went so far into the home that it caused part of the structure to collapse so much so that the fire department had to shore it up with beams to prevent it from caving in further. neighbors were able to pull out her 9-year-old daughter who was stuck behind a wall and some cabinets. remarkably, she is okay. the three teens were taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. there was also a red bmw involved in this that wrecked nearby in a different location across the street. that car was also driven by a teen. one witness saw both beamers racing down leigh avenue before the crash. >> they were racing from what it looked like. the silver one kind of lost control and then just got hit by the red one and the red one sent the silver one into the house. >> reporter: police took the teenage driver of the red bmw in

for questioning tichl. it is not clear whether he will be arrested. both cars were speeding it is clear but they are looking into if they were racing. it wouldn't be surprising to the people that live around here if there was a drag race going on. we will hear what neighbors have to say about the fast car problem. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." 5:04. new this morning, all lanes of interstate 280 back open after a multicar crash in the south bay overnight. the crash happened just before 1:00 this morning. on northbound 280 near the bird avenue exit in san jose. two people were taken to the hospital. they are expected to be okay. the cause of that crash is now under investigation. a self-described white supremacist facing felony hate crime charges after allegedly attacking a black man in downtown palo alto. 34-year-old sean bear made racist remarks and proceeded to punch and kick the man.

the victim with two friends just after midnight thursday when this all happened. that victim is now recovering from facial injuries and barrett is behind bars. barrett has been in trouble with the law before serving two prior prison sentences it is 5:05. students at one bay area university will come together today to take back the night. the annual event at san jose state university aimed at fighting back against sexual and relationship violence. today's events include a self-defense demonstration and a chance for survivors to speak out about the impact violence has had on them. there will be a candle light vigil and a march around cam pause. it is 5:05 right now. after a couple of days off, enjoying that nice weather, christina loren is back with us showing us something happening for green week. what's going on, young lady? >> looking very refreshed, we might add. >> thank you. it is nice to get a couple days off. i'm going to be putting in an extra day this weekend as a lot of people will be. after all, it is green week.

out here at the guadalupe park reservoir, the heritage rose garden, you are going to have an opportunity to get out here and we are going to get together and help clean up this park and beautify the bay area. it is ease wy to go green. you see the beautiful magenta, fresh dew glistening in the moonlight. you might find a little bit of patchy fog on your way to work as you head out there, specially at the immediate coast. the temperatures aren't that bad at all. in fact, it is rather mild out here i was able to take off my sweater for a moment. we're in the upper 40s to mid-50s. headlines tell the story as we head throughout the day today. we will see a little bit of patchy fog. gorgeous temperatures, in the low to mid-70s. as that natural a.c. kicks in. by friday, the warming begins. highs in the mid to upper 70s. that heat really cranks as we head through this weekend into next week. so, for today, you need to know,

you want to dress for pretty much a nice day with room temperature readings inland, 74 degrees. bayside, 69. at the coast, 62 degrees. coming up, we're going to dive a little bit deeper into the rose garden. we are going to show you exactly why these roses are able to flourish here in our mediterranean climate. it might be a good time for you to start planting some roses as well. we're going to show you how coming up. stick around for that. we want to take it to the road, someone who knows an awful lot about agriculture, our very own mike inouye. >> my family used to have a rose and a chris an they mum nursery. there you go. i will tell you how to kill all those plants. obviously, i didn't take over for them. the bay bridge looking really good. a stall reported in lane number 5 just past the toll plaza off to the left. be careful if you are heading anywhere left of the fast-track lanes the city, beautiful skyline.

welcome back. president george w. bush, number xliii, he will be opening his library. president obama is going to stop in there to visit with all the living presidents. they will debut that, going to be a big celebration. looks like a pretty cool facility. we'll have more details coming up. 5:11 right now. new details after the deadly building collapse in bangladesh. authorities now saying 199 people have died and rescuers are still combing through that rubble to search for any possible survivors. the factory building collapsed yesterday and the country's home minister says that building did violate construction codes. last night, a group of former factory workers from bangladesh now living in the bay area protesting outside the

fairmont in san francisco. they say american corporations like walmart, they need to do a better job ensuring safety at those factories they use. they claim some of the garment factories inside the collapsed bangladesh building may clothes for walmarts. walmarts board member was inside that fairmont attending the fund-raiser. she bought tickets to the event to try and talk to her but organizers canceled those tickets. workers involved in a deadly factory fire in novembe were making walmart products it is 5:12. the biggest consumer credit company, ge capital, is phasing out credit for customers that want to buy a gun. scott mcgrew has a close connection. one of the executive officers is adam lanza's father. it is based in connecticut and not far from sandy hook elementary. ge capital will no longer offer store credit in gun stores.

this is a blow to gun store owners, because their ability to offer customers a line of credit meant customers tended to buy more expensive merchandise. ge capital is behind most store credit cards. ikea, jc penney, old navy, as well as simple credit, a mattress with 90 days same as cash. ge capital is probably behind that as well. english economists, meanwhile, say business in the u.k. grew in the last quarter. england has avoided a triple dip reception. in spain, the latest numbers show 27% unemployment. just one of the concerns the markets have this morning. courtney reagan is live at cnbc world headquarters with a look ahead. good morning. good morning to you, scott. futures are higher after stocks faded late yesterday. the nasdaq held on to a fourth day of gain.

data on unemployment from bristol-myers, conocophillips, ups and the nasdaq closing up a fraction to 3269 amazon reportedly working on a box for your television. some are calling it kindle tv. it would allow you to stream movie shows on demand. this is not good news for sa saratoga. roku. it competes with apple's amle tv device. it is not clear whether amazon's device would let you stream netflix. that's one of their competitors. the scary thing for roku and apple is amazon wouldn't charge very much for the kindle tv if that's what they are going to charge it. they sell devices for cheap and charge you for content. the kindle is not very expensive

but they charge you on the books. >> you can watch amazon, netflix, hulu and anything but apple. i love my roku. amazon are going to come charging down that lane. it winner here, the consumer. more choices. always good to be out and about, not just be glued to the tv. right here on nbc bay area. out and about this morning is meteorologist, christina loren, she is in the beautiful san jose heritage rose garden out there. row upon row of roses, any color you want. >> they have got them all. pink, while, yellow, crimson. a beautiful, beautiful field of roses. i want to kind of show you some of the beauty out here this morning. there is a reason we are out here. we are going to get to that in just a minute. i want to tell you more about this rose garden, home to more than 3600 antique and modern roses comprised of 2600

distincted varieties. i would lining to bring in leslie hamilton, the executive director out here. we are putting out a call for volunteers. we are all about going green. we are going to be out here. tell me a little bit about that leslie. good morning to you. we are doing a river cleanup this saturday. we do one every month to help steward the guadalupe river. we are looking for folks to help, for three hours, from 9:00 to noonan. people can meet at 438 coleman avenue, the visitors center for the park. >> we are going to lean that up and make it really easy for you. flib can actually come out here. so once again, want to show you these beautiful roses out here and coming up, we're going to tell you why they are able to grow so beautifully in abundance here in the bay area. it has a lot to do with our mediterranean climate. we are going to talk about how you can get a rose garden started in your own backyard. that's coming up.

temperatures in the upper 40s to mid-50s. chilly up in the north bay. san jose, low 50s. a little bit of fog and more will develop as we go through the morning hours. the fog is the thickest right about 7:00 a.m. all that cloud cover clears out and we'll see a little bit of fog hugging the coastline. otherwise, a beautiful sunny day with temperatures that are going to be gorgeous. specially, because it has been so hot lately. we are talking about the mid to low 70s. a couple 60s at the coastline. mostly 70s for the bay area today. 71, santa rosa, 70 for fremont. 70 in los gatos. getting into the weekend, things are going to change in the hot direction. it is going to be down right toasty by sunday. hit the beach at 74 at the coast. you can't complain. monday through wednesday, temperatures stay steady. upper 80s, low 90s, it is going to be a warm week next week. make sure you keep that in mind when it comes to dressing the

of highway 9 coming up here towards san born. there is a crash and the car is sticking out into the slow lane. this is a noninjury accident. a couple of emergency vehicles there. it is not a big road. it is cause ag slowing for the few cars heading through there. i thought i would give you a note if you are heading out through saratoga. slowing coming through the altamont pass. traditional for west 580 and a little bit more. no big drama here. even antioch, seeing the early slowdown, which is typical for a thursday. pretty gentle over towards pittsburg and bay point. san mateo bridge, a nice flow westbound. steady flow of traffic, flat section. no problems on either side of the bridge. we will look over towards the berkeley area. the bay bridge, west 80, nice spacing through the cars. still at the limit down to the bay bridge toll plaza, 18, 19 minutes. back to you. 5:19. authorities down in southern

california trying to track down the man they say tried to run over another man with his car. it is all caught on camera. the video, pretty shocking. police detectives say the driver of the white bmw intentionally rams his car right into the biker there. pins him between the car and a trash bin. amazingly, the man was not seriously hurt. >> the vehicle accelerated and hit the corner of the trash bin creating a little pocket, if you will, for the bicyclist, which i believe saved his life. >> the question is, what led up to all this? detectives say the two men got into some sort of argument and the man on the bike punched the driver in the face. the driver of that car then tracked down the biker in a nearby alley and tried to run him over. detectives now releasing this sketch of the driver of the white bmw. detectives say he may now have a black eye or other bruises on his face after that fight. he this say his car might have

some damage on the front end as well. now, to an investigative unit exclusive. you have seen the headlines, heard the proclamations from politician that is america's housing crisis is over. is it true? >> a nine-month investigation uncovered the real story. despite changes in the law here in california, the team discovered rules are still stacked against homeowners in favor of the banks. they uncovered persistent problems with home loans and mortgages facing foreclosure, an evidence of robo signing and misplaced paperwork. >> operationally, a lot of servicers are a mess. the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. >> the banking industry insists things have gotten better. foreclosures have dropped in the last few months in california. coming up at 6:00 and 11:00, our investigators uncovers what one calls that threatens the foreclosure system to this day.

welcome back. a live look outside. should be a nice springlike day on tap. a look at the forecast. christina loren out and about. 5:24. >> a group of students at santa clara university will be ditching the desks for hard hats to build a brand new energy efficient home a groundbreaking ceremony for the team's house will be held this afternoon at the construction site on campus. the u.s. department of energy selects 20 university teams from around the world for that competition and gives them two

years to build the home from top to bottom. every house must generate all the energy it needs. in october, the home will then be moved to orange county where the solar showdown will take place. i like this next story. president obama giving us some insight into his parenting style. apparently, this one involves using embarrassment to keep his young girls in check. the commander and chief says he is willing to do anything to discourage his young daughters from getting tattoos. that includes getting one himself. president obama has told sasha and malia if they decide to get tattoos, he and michelle will get tattoos, the very same ones in the very same places on their bodies and to add to the embarrassment, they will then show them off on youtube as family tattoos. >> i wonder if the girls will care about that or they will go, okay, cool, dad. >> we will see the president will then step up. >> justin bieber or something.

good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. i'm jon kelley. a san jose mother in the hospital after a speeding car slammed into her living room. a wild scene. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live at the home near leigh avenue. you had a chance to talk to the injured woman's husband. what's he telling you? >> reporter: he is clearly shaken up and understandably. he tells us his wife is still in intensive care after this car slammed into the house where she was inside yesterday. he is under the impression she is going to survive her injuries. this happened around 4:00 yesterday afternoon. according to one witness we spoke to, he saw a silver and red bmw, two cars racing down leigh avenue. teenage drivers in both cars. he said one lost control. they banged into each other. the red bmw crashed across the

street on the side of the road. the silver bmw went into the house with three teenagers inside when neighbors came out to pull people out. the three teen anyoagers were t to the hospital. her 9-year-old daughter found under a wall and some cabinets remarkably was pulled out, okay, no serious injuries to speak of. as i mentioned, the wife is still in the hospital in an intensive care. we spoke to another neighbor who tells us this is not the first time they've seen teens speeding down this road. >> at 2:30, almost every day, i live here. we are terrorized by these kids with these $50,000 cars running up and down this street. >> reporter: the police did take the teenage driver of the red bmw in for questioning. it is not clear if that driver will be arrested. the police department believes that both cars were speeding and

they are looking into the fact of whether or not they were racing. just to give you a sense of how serious the impact was, you can see the house is boarded up. we read one comment on line from a firefighter who said they had never seen a car go that far into a home. the damage was so severe that part of the roof started to collapse, clearly, the walls and sides were collapsing and the fire department had to shore up the house with beams to prevent it from caving in further any more than it already had. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." 5:33. a pair of bay area daycare owners are in jail this morning. charged with multiple state licensing violations. including child abuse. >> "today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live in pleasanton where the two will make their first court appearance later today. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. these two women we are talking about are sisters. the charges against them are quite disturbing. police say it is called excessive swaddling, basically wrapping a blanket around the

child very tightly. it acts somewhat like a boa constrictor, restricting the child's ability to breath. in some cases, nazila and lida sharaf are accused of placing blankets over these children's faces while they were restrained which could potentially block their airway is. this involves 7 out of 19 infants in their care at universal preschool formerly known as sunnyside infant and preschool in livermore. the babies in question are between 7 and 11 months old tleechlt of the children, to make matters worse, suffer from respiratory problems. police say a worker actually alerted them that this was going on and that generally speaking, a child at least six months old in a parent's care may be swad ld f swaddled for comfort but not to leave them there. we spoke with a woman nearby and she knows one of the parents of the preschool that is closed

down. >> her biggest concern was, is my child just laying here screaming all day long, because they don't want to give the baby the attention, so she swaddle hoping that that will, i don't know, make them go to sleep. >> police are saying the concept of swaddling is specific to newborns. police say that trouble with the law here isn't new. the state actually revoked the daycare license in 2010. but the younger sister, reopened the facility in the same location under her parents' name. >> reporter: reporting live in pleasanton, christie smith, "today in the bay." the woman accused of trying to drug children with sleeping bills at a daycare in the south bay is to be back in court. sh he pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor charges. she stands accused of putting the sleep medication, sominex, into the sippy cups of her children at her care in the kid

die academy in morgan hill. she was fired. thousands of people become victims of mail theft every year and right now, some people are experiencing this for the first time. marla tallez with details on the investigation and what people can do to make sure their mail doesn't get stolen. >> we are in a neighborhood very close to san jose state. sometimes it is referred tos a spartan keys neighborhood. specifically at south seventh and virginia street. we have spoken to two people on south seventh alone who have fallen victim to mail theft recently. one woman says her mail was taken right from her front porch just last week. we do have someday light video to show you just to give you a better idea of the sort of neighborhood this is. it is very nice. tree-lined streets. this woman we talked to, she doesn't have a typical mailbox, which is part of the problem. nonetheless, she says, she did as she has always done and left her bills overnight for pick up

in the morning. by morning, they were gone. she had to stop payment on those checks. she reported it to the post office. we spoke to the postal service. they did confirm, they are getting more complaints of mail theft in this particular area. the question is, how do you prevent yourself from falling victim to mail theft? joining me live is postal inspector, josh fitch. you made the drive down. we appreciate it. the people are listening. how can they protect themselves from mail theft? good rng month. don't leave the mail overnight, put it out before the carrier gets there. drop it in one of the big blue mailboxes, do that before the last collection, walk it into the post office or drop it off to work. if it has credit cards or checks or valuable information, don't leave it out. >> seems to be pretty common sense. >> mail theft is a federal crime. it is something we take very seriously. if you have been a victim, it is so important to report it to us.

apparently, they used toylike remotes to set off the bombs in texas, a memorial service for the men and women killed by that explosion at the fertilizer plant. thousands of people expected to attended to's service in baylor university. among the speakers, president obama and texas governor, rick perry. flags all over the state being flown at half-staff in the memory of those victims. a total of 14 people died last week when a fire at the west texas fertilizer plant suddenly erupted in an explosion. hundreds of others were injured. before president obama heads to the memorial service, he is stopping in dallas for the opening of the george w. bush presidential museum. he is joining four other living presidents, jimmy carter, george h.w. bush and himself on the

campus of southern methodist university. the library museum will feature major turning points during the second president bush's term in office. exhibits will feature 9/11 attacks, iraq and afghanistan wars and hurricane katrina. pretty shocking news for 49 err fans, a brand new documentary revealing the team almost traded hall of fame quarterback, joe montana, before he won that 1984 super bowl. an espn's film, 30 for 30 chronicling the 1983 draft that featured that guy shl, john elw. it says he had discussions with the niners and head coach, bill walsh. walsh apparently said he would interested in possibly getting elway to a potential trade for montana. elway and walsh had a history. walsh recruited elway to play at stanford when he was coaching. we are all happy that trade never happened. number 16, he did pretty good, went on to win three more super bowls playing for the 49ers.

glass devices. scott mcgrew, not so sure. i'm not so sure. they are kind of making a spectacle of himself. he is from the firm ihs. he says google will probably sell 9.5 million google glass devices by 2016 with 250% sales growth year over year. though the firm warns it is important for developers to create good apps for the device and for the price to fall below it's $1500 initial price. i think the google glasses will be a little bit like the segue scooter, amazing technology that never catches on. but, let me tell you, i demonstrated one of the very first cell phones equipped with a camera on tv about ten years ago and i said i wasn't sure that was going to catch on. i couldn't think of very many reasons you would want to take a picture and transmit it to people right away. it never occurred to me people would use their cell phones as a
